Dicecloud V1 Guide, pt. 1
Tumblr media
credit: 💉on pinterest
Hello to my wonderful players! This post is to serve as my go-to link when I have to run games and my players aren't familiar with Dicecloud.
Disclaimer: Everything I say is of my opinion and personal preference. I do not claim that one is objectively better over the other. If I do, assume that I mean it in a joking manner.
If you still decide to use D&DB after this, that's fine too! I just can't help if something goes terribly wrong.
🌼˗ˏˋ "Why not D&D Beyond?"
Because DC is free, supremely customizable with unlimited character slots and easy to implement homebrew. The catch is that its all manual (aside from the stat math) and at worst you would have to add a list of things in one by one.
Additionally, those who are experienced with Markdown / HTML can use their knowledge to automate some math or functions.
I think its a good thing to have new players learn to create a character from the scratch. D&DB gives you a handful of choices with short descriptions that can be skimmed over, the player won't really understand what the feature is or why they made that choice.
To give you an idea on what DC is like, here are some of my characters ranging from low levels (1-5) to level 30 (it was a heavily homebrewed campaign):
Momo, Level 3 Gestalt Character, Barbarian (Giants)/Druid (Wildfire)
Rowena Lillith Burnette Grey, Level 30 Gestalt Character, Blood Hunter (Mutant)/Ranger (Monster Slayer)
Whiff, Level 6 Character, Rogue (Arcane Trickster)
Lanie Colette Jacquét, Level 6 Character, Ranger (Fey Wanderer)/Warlock (Archfey)
🌼˗ˏˋ "What about sources?" / "How can I find X?"
5e Wikidot. Everything is literally right there for ✨F R E E✨ no subscription or content sharing needed.
🌼˗ˏˋ "How can I roll dice during games?"
I use Owlbear Rodeo and its dice rolling extensions. It just doesn't connect your sheet to the VTT like Beyond20.

I. Signing In to Dicecloud
If you don't already have an account, go ahead and make one (link below)
https://v1.dicecloud.com/
We will be using version 1 (V1) Dicecloud. Its the one I'm familar with and it's the easily customizable one. Version 2 massively overhauls the OGs systems, so I don't know how to use it (plus, no unli slots). If you decide to use V2, that's fine too!
II. Creating a New Character
Great! Now open up the sidebar (☰ on the top left if you're on mobile), click on "Characters", then the big red plus button (bottom right)
Tumblr media
It will give you 3 options, select "New Character"
Tumblr media
(Check picture below) You'll be greeted to this screen, at the very least fill in the character's name and race. But they will all be changeable later if you decide to change your mind.
Tumblr media
One you click "Add" you will be greeted to your character's "Stats" page (keep in mind that I'll call them "Tabs" or "Pages")
Tumblr media
From here, I'm assuming you already have a character in mind. If you don't, I have a separate post--a quick guide. Feel free to check it out then come back here.
III. Setting your Base Ability Scores
I have all the pictures below in order. On your character sheet, head to the "Features" page, you will then see the "Base Ability Scores" feature.
Tumblr media
Click on that and you will be shown your ability scores, they are 10 by default. To edit them, click on the pencil on the top right of the pop up window.
Tumblr media
The pencil puts you in, what I like to call, "editing mode." Earlier you were just in "viewing mode."
Anyways, you will see pencils on the right side. Each of them allows you to edit their corresponding ability score.
Tumblr media
Clicking on then brings you here (look below) where you can change the value. Remember, this is your base ability score, that means before you receive any bonuses.
Tumblr media
After editing each score, you should end up with something like this. Just hit the check mark (✔) at the top right corner or click outside the pop up window.
Once you've done that for every ability, you should end up with something like this:
Tumblr media
This post is getting pretty long, so I'll continue this in another post. I'll update and leave links as I go.

Phew! Didn't realize how long I was in the back working on stuff, things have gotten dusty here in the archives!
I heard you all liked my idea for Tinkits Crimebag, and I am excited to reveal part of what I've been working so hard on!
Check out this link and you'll see Tinkits's FULL character sheet including awesome HeroForge pics, all the stuff they sell in their little merchant cart, their character bio, spell list, and more!!!
I can't recommend this character sheet website enough, it's super easy to use and is one of the most mobile friendly websites I've ever seen! It's all free and open source too, and allows you to use material from any 5e publication, or even create your custom things too!
Let me know what you think, enjoy exploring!!! ✨🙌😊✨

I recently had a chance to go through a stack of ancient folders of tabletop stuff, found a bunch of cute nostalgia fodder, and realised I will simply never be able to beat any allegations or however that dystopian meme goes. Anyway, here's two vintage Oath DnD blorbos.
Tumblr media
Look ma, no printer! This one I'm carbon dating to about 2005 after the 2004 Player's Guide to Faerun made it so I didn't need to eat a level adjustment to play an aasimar, hooray! Still had to take two feats to get wings though. Agony. Anyway, this is an interesting one for me because it has always been VERY hard to convince me to dump dex and go for heavy armour. Also, I am reasonably sure she was indeed named after Samus' suit. I don't remember much of her story because I'm mixing her up with another aasimar I played around the same time who was some kind of royal bodyguard. Who then proceeded to get eaten by a purple worm (I was very sad).
Tumblr media
And this is, if I recall correctly, the first 5e character I made after the playtest, so I guess 2014ish. One of my more typical duelist dexadins! Not sure poor Sasha ever got to hit level 3 and take that Oath of Devotion, though. And while I'm pretty sure "the Tragically Departed Lady ---" eventually got named, I do not remember it at all, alas. But I find I like this silly barely-played sheet because so much of my 5e stuff is digital.

Hello, I was wondering if i could have permission to create libraries for dicecloud v2 character maker. I am attempting to make a big homebrews of the internet pack with even some of my own libraries (a drider race) and I know even with properly linking is not enough to give credit. Thank you and have a lovely day
Hello, thank you for asking!
I'd be happy to see my races and subclasses and the like in a library of the sort, but it's a bit tricky to give permission to someone asking anonymously. 😅

so what's happening here?
okay. so first off - i changed the main's url a while back and then realised 'wait if that's not using this one then i can put it back here' i intend to dedicate most of my spoons today to fixing links - if it's been more than 8 hours since this post was made and you find a broken link, please tell me
but anyway. we are reincarnating (i still got the long covid but trying to make it easier on me this go around)
what's changing? well, i intend to have two different types of builds here: - adaptations - direct adaptations of a character, presented without description as the original character's should suffice. for example, gym leaders and danganronpa characters would likely fall here. instead of characterisation notes, i'll just have ideas of how to integrate them. (this doesn't necessarily mean all the human characters will be human though. that's boring) - inspirations - the majority of existing builds fall under this. examples being basically any mon that isn't a specific one like guildmaster wigglytuff. these will have characterisation notes though perhaps not as in-depth as they used to - long covid messed that one up a bit.
and what's new?
i'll be making example sheets, probably using MPMB's pdfs. i say probably because they need adobe acrobat, so don't run natively on linux and i can't get them to run through wine - but they look so good i've set up a win10 virtual machine just to use them - why this over beyond? beyond still hasn't implemented some stuff properly, and the exported pdfs require scrolling in some fields in my experience which means no printing - why this over dicecloud? again, pdf export reasons - you can't export it in any easily readable way - why this over insert any other pdf here? this one does the maths for me :v
if these sheets don't work out for me i'll be using dicecloud for the maths and just copying stuff into another pdf. if they do work out i'll put a proper payment in for them; i appreciate PWYW for letting you try them out first too
generally these will be level 5 or 6 to play around with how i see them.
i have no schedule for this currently. i'm mostly posting this to try and force brain into it - the adhd stuff is. Going - but hopefully i'll get /somewhere/ next month.
i also intend to update all the existing builds. mostly just making sheets for them, but some of them there's cool new stuff they can use on heroforge. as such, i'll be preparing them, and once i have enough i'll start queueing them and updating their links once i do
regarding homebrew - my friend's homebrew i've used for a couple isn't available currently, so i'll adapt them to new roles. scrafty's going to be the hardest, but i can deal i do intend to look and see what homebrew is set up for whichever sheets i end up going with - it won't be the main focus but it will give some inspiration...
but yeah. tl;dr long covid + adhd are kicking my heck but we stay silly :3

just to note - dicecloud integrates with avrae, if you're using that! i don't know if there's any other discord bot, so there's also a very cool tutorial module that makes things a lot easier
i want to try out flapkan's too but i can't get acrobat to install through wine. will probably try it again with like. win7 acrobat or something. if anyone's got any tips they'd be much appreciated both for me and other linux-users
Ditching D&D Beyond or never got it in the first place? Here's some free/pwyw resources.
Dicecloud. This online app allows you to make and track character sheets for free! It does a lot of the calculations for you, just like dnd beyond would. Best overall replacement. (Thank you, @chryslerisdead)
PWYW Class Character Sheets by Emmet Byrne. These character sheets in my opinion, are easier to fill out and harder to mess up, with class-specific features built-in. You can easily edit them digitally, and there's even multiclass/homebrew options. Slap em on Google drive or something, share with your DM, lots of options.
Point-Buy Calculator. Easily automates character stat creation if you're using the Point-Buy system.
5e Level Up Tool. Select your class, select your level, get a digestible checklist of everything you need to do to level up. This one is SO GOOD and so slept on.
5e Spellbook. A quick way to reference your spells and build a Spellbook with a ton of filters.
Encounter Calculator. I know challenge rating isn't everything, but this is a good/fast way to see how balanced your encounters are, at a glance, at least in the eyes of the source books.
RPGbot. Lots of resources for DMs and players: encounter builders, dpr calculators, and lists of player options with sample builds and optimization suggestions, which may be helpful to folks new to the game.
Bonus: Online Tools (System Agnostic)
Here.fm. This is the alternative I use instead of roll20, because it's faster/easier. Drag and drop in maps and tokens in seconds, built-in library of stickers you can use for effects, draw right on the virtual tabletop, use temporary drawings to map out moves, built-in dice rollers, and options for proximity chat. I use it in combination with discord (just have players join your here room muted), but it could be used entirely on it's own, I imagine. Not built for ttrpgs, but works incredibly well for them.
Kenku.fm. A PWYW mini browser focused on mixing and sharing music to your dnd games through whatever app you use, with helpful discord support. This app also LEGALLY bypasses the issue that got all the YouTube discord bots shut down, so you can share YouTube audio worry-free.
Additional Resources (Aka, stuff I found out about after I originally posted this):
flapkan. Holy shit, this might be the BEST character sheet option on this list! Form-fillable pdfs with fully automated built-in prompts to auto fill features and spells, built-in Point-Buy and other automated calculations, and it generates a lot for you. Can be used digitally or you can print!

Nightcrawler, Jovana.
Here's a character sheet for the D&D character I'm playing in a short campaign. The images are sourced from various places, and I don't intend to claim ownership of them. I'm sharing this solely for the purpose of using the pictures in my Dicecloud journal.

By the way...
"Oh I find encumbrance/crunch/whatever hard to manage."
GUESS WHAT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE!
DiceCloud is an online character sheet maker, complete with user-made libraries of content so you don't have to spend exorbitant amounts of money on sourcebooks. And it has ready-made homebrew as well - it's very helpful as a Bloodhunter enthusiast, which is both homebrew and very crunchy.
Play Pathfinder instead of D&D? Pathbuilder's pretty much the same deal. There's some paywalled features, but they're very limited, and it's formatted so you can plan out a build in advance.
Running D&D in 2024 is like, the player community collectively convinced each other that dungeon crawls, resource management and attrition are bad, so now everyone runs games where characters can expect to get into one or two fights a day and characters are never stretched for resources, and most Reddit threads about D&D are GMs asking for help challenging their groups because of said ignoring of the resource management aspect and getting told that a good GM could make it work so obviously they must be a bad GM.

Welcome!
Tumblr media
source: @summ3rsunsh1ne / original post here
This blog will serve as the repository for all information related to my D&D 5e homebrew setting, Vhasterra.
Content will be organized with tags and links to make sure posts are easily searchable. Should any content become unclear or difficult to locate, or if you have any suggestions or questions, don't hesitate to send an ask!
This setting comprises of many things that I love, with heavy references or direct pulls from titles like Genshin Impact, Witcher, The Tinker Bell films, and more! I do not claim any ownership over what isn't mine and hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
Lastly, I will be using images that are AI-generated, sourced from Pinterest or deco Discord servers. Whenever possible, I will use non-AI images and replace AI-generated images with a fitting non-AI image or my own artwork. You can also send asks if there are issues with credits.

More coming soon!
I'll update this post as the blog grows, I'll figure out how best to organize it along the way... hopefully. Excited to have you on this journey!
Edit: Expect a mix of formal and informal posts, and some 5e mechanics related stuff :]

SO-
I've made Kerry in DiceCloud (dicecloud my beloved baby). I didn't do Isaiah and Crete, since they'd be pretty similar (they're all Lv2 Bards, so no subclass yet). The only difference between them at this point is proficiencies and instrument choices, and some race varience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I changed the stats just now, lmao
:D this actually helped me with a little bit of characterisation. Kerry is a pretty big figure in her hometown, and does a lot of work on the family farm. She's caring, but her bluntness and strength of character gives her a bit of a scary aura.
The viol is a reference to her very first concept art, where she was fighting Tails by herself with a violin.
i think everyone should make crossships again. listen shipping two ocs who are from completely different universes is so fun, because yes matthew and future would not logically know eachother yes but they work together so well. i love making ships for fun. its literally so fun

DND resources I use
So I recently started playing as a DM, maybe these links will be helpful for someone :)
FOR CREATING CHARACTERS
Dicecloud  -  The only tool your players will need. I absolutely love Dicecloud. It’s the perfect place to make your character sheets, and if you need any help with it (it can be a bit confusing at first), then there’s an active Discord server with tons of people who are more than willing to help!
Dicecloud Spell Manager  -  Handy tool that lets you add any and all official spells to a character.
5eTools  -  I use this page only for the races resource, but there’s lots more to discover there!
DND 5e Wikidot  -  This one I use for classes, sub-classes, backgrounds, and feats.
D&D Spells  -  Every single official spell is on that page, and you can set different filters for classes and such
100 Warm-Up Roleplaying Questions for Players  -  to help new(ish) players get to know their characters!
FOR WORLDBUILDING
Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator  -  Great tool for creating a world map. There’s so many useful features that you can use.
DndSpeak  -  I love, love, love this page so much!! There’s so many different generators and lists, here are a few examples:
Random Tavern Generator
Murder Mystery Plot Hook
Ghost’s Unfinished Business
100 Side Quest Hooks
100 (Weird) Quest Rewards
100 City Quests
100 Prophetic Dreams That Mean Nothing
100 Colorful Hosts
100 Interesting Shopkeepers and Merchants
100 Inn Patrons
100 Guilds to Liven Up Your World
100 Magical Landscapes
5e Magic Shop  -  A generator that creates an inventory for a magic shop. Really useful for getting prices and such. This page also has other tools that may be useful!
Donjon Encounter Size Calculator  -  This one is, obviously, for seeing how much my players can theoretically handle when they’re not killed by random owlbears. This is really useful for new DMs ^^
FOR NOTES
For creating notes I use a Onenote notebook. Mine is shared with my players, and the sections that have “confidential” information are locked with a password. My players have also created their own sections where they make their own notes. This way, all of our notes are in one place.
Okay, that’s it for now. If I remember or discover any other, I’ll add them to the list!

so I just found out about dicecloud, a really nice web app for 5th edition character sheets a couple days ago and im losing my mind dude. the initial setup is time consuming (especially if your character is mid to high level) and has a bit of a learning curve, but if you kinda understand stuff like Excel formulas you can make the most organized and streamlined and easy to use character sheet i’ve ever seen, that will do most if not all of the math for you during actual gameplay, while leaving the fun part (dice rolling and roleplay) to you. HIGHLY recommend. anyway here’s my boy
