My immediate characterization from not being an expert on them is that Michela would kinda have a crush and be inviting Shelby lots of places and lowkey flirty trying to make it kinda date like bc Shelby is a cool hot older woman and she's maybe trying to put out signals that like wow maybe you hold my hand or we should kiss or Something (not explicitly but very flirtily) but Shelby is like. an example: the hmong people have no country. they live everywhere from southern china down into southeast asia as their place of origin but have nigh consistently been the victims of genocide, most notably for those in the US being the violence they faced during the Vietnam War. thus, a conundrum: you cannot really look up census names for Hmong people when many of them still live in the jungle guerrilla style to avoid violence in Laos/Vietnam, and in the US we dont differntiate - on a census they would check "Asian" and thats likely it.

People in the comments have brought up BehindtheName. I like that site a lot. Barring that, you will have to find Hmong communities online, or, if you live in central California, twin cities minnesota or wisconsin, or north carolina, you may be near a pocket of Hmong people here in the US. Places to source names like reddit or bluesky may help as well. Pay attention to news articles with people of the ethnicity you're looking for - in the above case, focus on Fresno / Minneapolis/St Paul / Wisconsin / North Carolina news stories involving Hmong interviewees.

OPs advice is good. Sometimes you will still have to dig.

writing tip: searching "[place of origin]ish names" will get you a lot of stuff and nonsense made up by baby bloggers.

searching "[place] census [year]" will get you lists of real names of real people who lived in that place.
