Digimon Hurricane Touchdown / Transcendent Evolution! The Golden Digimentals (2000)
Tumblr media
This was weird...I didn't really like it. It was pretty at least?? Okay pretty might be an understatement, some scenes were aesthetic af. It was just the writing, pacing and inconsistencies in the animation that tanked it for me. I got so bored that I took an hour break 30 minutes in lol. I thought I'd be mad that they cut these movies (OVAs?) up for an American release, but now I'm thinking that might have been the right move...
Digimon introduced: Gummymon, Chocomon, Terriermon, Lopmon, Antylamon, Wendigomon, Gargomon, Kerpymon, Seraphimon, Magnadramon, Rapidmon,
Notes:
-Dang those titles are long! I wonder why Digimon has this weird history of having movies that aren't really movies. I read on some wiki that the Ojamajo Doremi movie was sandwiched in between the two parts which is...a choice (kinda reminds me of the Angela Anaconda thing lol).
-I liked Wallace's design, voice and concept (even though he couldn't pronounce his own name lol), but I didn't really like him being so aggressively flirty with the girls? Felt awkward and forced. Also, Western stereotypes strike again!
-How could Wallace possibly not know about the digital world by now?
-The concept of twin digimon is really cool and Terriermon and Chocomon are adorable. I liked Terriermon's voice a lot. I thought he might be voiced by a young child, but I guess his VA was in her 20s...
-I'm kinda confused about who worked on this. There were times when it seemed like there was an attempt to mimic Mamoru Hosoda's style but then it would switch to a style with really heavy line-art that was like almost the opposite style. Also, they would sometimes freeze frame randomly or use shots from the show which was jarring for a theatrical release.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Look at this cursed Patamon with lips!)
-Some of the best shots in this were close-ups of things (a digivice, a mouse, an airplane, etc.) Like whoever did the background/object artwork really popped off.
-Mimi's star hair looked so good in this style! It looked awkward in the TV series but here they made the stars kind of holographic and dialed back the colors.
-Literally every new digimon introduced in this was great, but I feel they kinda blew the Seraphimon and Magnadramon introduction. They appeared for like two seconds and didn't do much. If you're going to introduce digivolutions that epic, they should probably take the final blow in my opinion (in other words, they should have just been introduced some other time).
-A Wendigo reference!? In MY Japanese cartoons?? I guess they did their North America research...His design is pretty wild, but I like it.
-Not a whole lot of explaining going on this movie. Chocomon "disappeared one day" and then reappears as Wendigomon and is all confused. Where did he go? Why did they treat all of Chocomon's digivolutions as some kind of disease? Usually when digimon digivolve they call them by their new names, but they never used anything but Chocomon. Were the "bad digivolutions" kind of like Skullgreymon?
-Terriermon's ears are spectacular. I love that they drag on the ground and that they puff up when he flies. A+ mon design.
-I kinda wanted to laugh when Wallace was like "there are digimon in Japan!?" But then I remember "digimon" is a portmanteau of two English words so there's that. Why do his digimon mostly speak in Japanese? For convenience I guess, but it's confusing...
-Seeing Hikari and Takeru ride Amtrak was a hoot. Also, I think this is my first time hearing Denver mentioned in an anime (my friend used to live there lol).
-Why did this billboard look so weird?
Tumblr media
(It looks like an animation/editing mistake?)
-The whole "random American movie character" thing reminded me of Melissa from the first My Hero Academia movie. I feel like anime has the tendency to go abroad when they want things to feel special.
-Kinda funny how the dub censors guns but then there are characters like Gargomon who literally has funs for hands. Good luck with that!
-Everyone's baby versions were adorable. I especially liked Daisuke's lack of teeth :)
-Did they break a rule at the end there with Chocomon's digiegg reappearing in the real world? Probably.
Yeah this plot was just...weird. And then there there were a bunch of drawn out scenes with no soundtrack and kinda creepy vibes. It just felt like they didn't know what they wanted to do with this one. Nice to look at, but left me kinda hollow.

Let's have a look at the Twin Digimon, Terriermon and Lopmon!
Tumblr media
Although only referred to by their baby names, Gummymon and Chocomon, both Terriermon and Lopmon had their debut in the Movie Digimon Adventure 02: Vol.1 Hurricane Touchdown!!/Vol.2 Transcendent Evolution!! The Golden Digimentals.
[If you have only seen the English Digimon The Movie, I highly recommend watching the japanese original for each of the 3 movies cut together for it. This movie alone has about 50% of its content cut.]
Most of you will easily remember Terriermon, but Lopmon only shows up in its child form in this ending illustration done by the late Yasuo Ōtsuka.
Tumblr media
Instead of Kenji Watanabe or other Bandai staff, Terriermon and Lopmon were designed by the movie's director, Yamauchi Shigeyasu himself, for the movie.
Tumblr media
On the design sheet, we can see several points in which Terriermon and Lopmon were supposed to be distinct from each other in their body style. On this sheet, Terriermon is 1.7 heads tall, while Lopmon is 2 heads tall. Even if they would fall straight down, Lopmon's ears also appear to be shorter than Terriermon's. Lopmon's visible canine is a design element still used today, even though in terms of size and proportions, the twins are identical in modern media.
Due to its popularity from the Adventure 02 movie, Terriermon was chosen as partner for Jianliang Li/Henry Wong in the next anime season, Digimon Tamers, and by association, Lopmon was chosen as partner for Jian's sister Xiaochun/Suzie.
Tumblr media
According to the Reference Book, Lopmon is the lonely crybaby type, while Terriermon is calm and robust. Both have the move Petit Twister, while Terriermon's signature move is Blazing Fire and Lopmon's is Blazing Ice. Furthermore, the Reference Book entries of their Baby I stages Zerimon and Cocomon state that they're the only Digimon that are born as twins, but the reason why is still unknown. They also aren't exclusively born as twins and can hatch alone from eggs individually as well.
Tumblr media
On the Digimon Web Twitter, Terriermon and Lopmon appear on various occasions, including the celebration of ふたごの日 futago no hi Twins Day. (5th of February)
Tumblr media
The Card Game also features them together on some of their cards! And there's even official card sleeves with the two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them appear to be very popular and are featured in many parts of the franchise, Lopmon in particular, being chosen as a partner Digimon for characters in a number of games.

Is the digimon movie redub real????
Yes! I saw most of it at the reveal screening at Otakon! (I missed the movie set at Hikarigaoka; the screening room was filled to capacity and I was person number 2 at the closed door, sniff! But people left after that movie, so I saw Our War Game and Hurricane Touchdown).
Okay so let me try to explain this: apparently, the new bluray collection features three main things:
1.) Digimon: The Movie (2000)
The English dub film from the year 2,000, featuring three movies smashed into one film. The movies were cut down to make a single narrative.
2.) Digimon Adventure (1999), Digimon: Children's War Game (2000), Digimon Adventure 02: Hurricane Touchdown!! The Golden Digimentals (2000)
Three separate films with a Japanese voice track
And, brand new!!!
3.) The three movies in #2 with an all new English dub track! The movies are uncut and run the same as the movies in #2!
The two films I saw featured the Japanese soundtrack. The vibe was somewhere between the Japanese sub and the English dub. There were new jokes, and dang were they bangers! They mostly got the old English dub voice cast, but there were new voices, too.
It was truly wonderful! You will all love it! I am so so so tempted to draw some of my fave jokes, but I am torn- I don't want to spoil anything, ahh!
Also, an 02 bluray was announced too!

What is your score from 10 to 0 for: Digimon Adventure (Short 1999), Digimon Adventure (Anime), Digimon Adventure: Bokura no War Game (Film), Digimon Adventure 02 (Anime), Digimon Hurricane Touchdown! Supreme Evolution! The Golden Digimentals! (Film), Digimon Adventure 02: Diablomon no Gyakushuu (Film), Digimon Adventure Tri. (OVA) and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna (Film)?
Adventure Movie: 10 Adventure: 8 (I mean it is for kids so like. 8 is generous for an adult like me to give it haha.) Bokura no War Game: 8 but only cause the music sucks and isn't ska bangers like in the us version 02: 9 (I like how the older kids became mentors. Especially Tai, his growth is <3.) Hurricane Touchdown: 8 same problem as War Game with the music Return of Diaboromon: 10 Tri: ughhhhhh it's mid as hell. Not the unforgivable insult some people seem to think it is, not a glorious return to form like others think. It's slightly above average. Kizuna: Slightly better than Tri but I don't know why it needed that tragic ending???? It was good but I just don't buy it if they're still honoring the 02 epilogue
The American recut Digimon Movie: 1000000000 THE DIGIVOLUTION IS UP AND RUNNIN DIGI SEE DIGI HEAR DIGI KNOW IT WAS COMIN My prediction for the new 02 movie is its gonna undo a lot from Kizuna AND its gonna make Ken and Miyako a couple in order to fit that stupid epilogue. F.
Also I haven't watched the remake because I heard it was monumentally disappointing, only giving Matt and Tai interesting things to do and not enough of the group together. In case anyone cares: Frontier<Savers<Xros<Hunters<Appmon<Adventure<02<Tamers (I personally like Adv and 02 more than Tamers but let's be real. Tamers is the best one). I haven't watched Ghost Game yet and Ive never played any of the games (although I want to understand Anode and Cathode Tamer lore more than life itself).

I only saw those three OVAs as digimon: the movie I'm afraid, which is enough to judge the first two on I think, but I know Hurricane Touchdown was butchered. I'll watch the original versions when Discotek comes out with them.
I also have never seen Kizuna. I was pretty disappointed by Tri, and the premise of "when you get older you lose your connection with your digimon" pissed me off. It sucks, it's stupid, and it actively contradicts... literally everything else in Digimon canon.
Digimon Adventure (Short 1999): 7. It tells a nice, concise story within its runtime and lets us get to know its characters decently well: Tai, Kari, and Koromon. But there's not a ton else going on.
Digimon Adventure (anime): 9. The animation doesn't hold up super well nowadays (there are several fight scenes that are just moving mostly static pictures around or moving them in) but the characters and plot are still really good.
Digimon Adventure: Bokura No War Game: 10. Look, there's a reason Hosoda copy-pasted the plot of this OVA into Summer Wars.
Digimon Adventure 02 (anime): 8. This is actually my favorite tv show ever, but I have to admit it's not technically the best anime Digimon's ever put out. The Emperor arc was really strong, and I thought that it did a good job building the relationships between the characters, but the plot got kind of wonky at times, especially with the "Holy Stone" arc (why was that even there?)
Digimon Adventure 02: Diablomon no Gyakushuu: 9. Fights against Diablomon just tend to be really well-done, and I especially appreciated seeing Daisuke and Ken interact here!
Digimon Adventure Tri: 4. I watched it all, but the plot just... never was that compelling, and they treated the 02 team like they were chopped liver. Also the whole "corrupted Gennai off-shoot disguising himself as the Digimon Emperor" had nothing to do with anything, I saw no reason for that except to build hype. And Agumon's food obsession got flanderized to the point of being REALLY annoying. Yeah he likes food, but he's capable of talking about other things you know! In Tri literally every second sentence he spoke was about food.

The Digimon Adventure short film, Our War Game, and Hurricane Landing!! / Transcendent Evolution!! The Golden Digimentals are all getting their first ever subbed Blu-Ray release. They're also getting a new uncut dub with the OG dub cast!
Just caught up with all the news about it haha, thanks for the note; sounds awesome! I'd read Discotek was planning for something long soon and manifested it being the original three movies being redubbed--so hopefully someone picked up that phone
Hearing the new dubs are being handled much like the newer Adventure: 2020 dub, the original score and much more accurate scripts with the occasional old-dubism, so that should be fun, and it's nice they brought back most of the old cast too! (Also hopefully means getting a proper official English cover of Butterfly for the first time) Wild that it'll be the first release of the full Hurricane Touchdown movie too with how much got removed from it for the clusterfuck of a movie we got lol, and the 02 remaster release looks good; Digimon fans eating good today
Need Discotek to play some role in redubbing and hopefully remastering YGO franchise-wide yesterday
