Went to a stupendously awesome session last night at/not at the Apple Store on Regent Street. As part of the Big Draw Festival, a cohort of lovely Apple Store employees herded a group of us down to the Royal Academy where wandered through the public spaces back into the studios where art-making magic has happened for 250 years. And as much work as I’ve made on the ipad, this was the first time I felt I got a proper entry into life drawing on it. Absolutely loved it: it was the quintessence of Steve Jobs assertion that Apple exists at the intersection of technology and the humanities. So, I ran a poll a little while back asking you all what you wanted to see more of. Apart from everyone saying they wanted to see all the things 😁 the biggest request was more details about my processes and techniques.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ So, first up, here is a little example of what I do for warm up every day. I like to grab a photo and just knock out some gesture drawings form it. You can see here, first attempt is always pretty rough.. but as I got my hand and eye co-operating, it gets a little sharper. I don’t really use these for anything other than warm up, but sometimes I will go back and grab one of these gesture drawings and build it up into sketch or even use it as the basis for a digital painting or something like that. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ If you’re wondering - I do these even on days when I am only inking, or colouring someone else’s lines too.
