Dinluke is such a fascinating and delicious ship because, like, Luke embodies the curly blonde haired idealistic twink darling AND an overpowered eldritch monster of UNSPEAKABLE POWER and ALSO a daddy issues kid who was and is very much underloved. And Din is just a terrifyingly talented warrior with the simple needs of following a code and loving his son plus he’s also so touch starved that feeling could probably power an entire planet.

The threads I always want to pull on are: Luke as both a darling and a terror, straddling both spaces, and getting Din’s goddamn helmet off in the most angsty ways possible.

(Set in the same AU as Those Hands of Yours, That Count the Nights, but approximately two-and-a-half years later.)

Word spreads through the Hoth base like wildfire, hot enough to thaw the walls: they’ve been hailed by a Mandalorian ship. Everyone knows the Mandalorians are nominal allies, and everyone knows what happened to Mandalore a year ago. The fact one is taking refuge here is momentous, and they have the clearance. They’ve been let through.

A crowd has gathered in the hangar, dense enough that Luke has to politely but firmly elbow his way through to the front, to stand beside Leia and Han. Han looks sour, like he does most of the time at the moment. Leia has her arms folded, brows drawn.

“Well?” Luke asks, slightly breathless.

She gives him a small, sad look. “A woman hailed. She gave the right codes but…”

The intimation is unvoiced: don’t get your hopes up.

He tries not to, he really does, but he is made of hope, and always has been.

Like the clean stab of a vibroblade, the Kom’rk fighter/transport slides home into the hangar, coming to a crisp stop and easing off the turbolifts until she settles in a soft cloud of shifted ice crystals. Elegantly done with such a sizeable ship. Han pouts at it like it’s done him great personal wrong.

Even though his heart thuds in his chest, Luke tries to take a deep breath. It could be anyone on that ship: despite Mandalore’s fate, there are thousands of Mandalorians in the galaxy, and all of them are valued allies. He’ll be happy to see anyone who steps off it. All warriors are welcome, especially those of such renown as—

His feet move before he realises. He can sense him, after the horrid, sickening void he’s felt for two years. He catches himself with the Force before he can slip, and is halfway up the loading ramp before anyone has time to notice, to stop him. There is ringing silver in the Force, the most beautiful song in the galaxy.

He grabs the middle figure’s arms, unable to stop himself from breaking into a wide, joyous grin. Immediately a forest of blasters in on him, loaded and ready to fire.

“Din,” he breathes, aware of them but ignoring them. “You’re alive.”

“Luke?” Din chokes out, and a woman with a blue and white helmet gestures for the guards around them to lower their weapons with a roll of her helmet.

Distantly Luke hears Leia let out a sound of pure delight, but it barely registers. Ignoring the crowd, ignoring propriety, Luke surges up. Din meets him halfway, and it’s cold beskar to warm(ish) skin and hair, Luke’s eyes sliding closed.

He’d been on a low simmer of dread for two years, since they separated all that time ago, since they found out about Mandalore, with no inkling Din was actually safe. He’d tried to move on, to let go, but he couldn’t. Some small, perhaps foolish, fragment of hope remained in him.

It’s paid off.

They pull back, and Luke sags with relief. He doesn’t even know what to say. His emotions are in turmoil, and all he can do is stare as the familiar, beloved lines of Din’s helmet, and superimpose the holograph he’s stared at every night.

“Oh, I have good news,” Din says.

“What?”

Din steps slightly to the side, pressing something on his pauldron. A hoverpram floats forward.

“We’re fathers, now,” he says, and the hoverpram opens.

din is definitely the husband to sew all of luke's clothes and repair his gloves when training gets a little too intense or he comes back from a scouting mission with tears in his jackets and robes because "babe, you wouldn't believe what i found at an old jedi temple!" luke goes digging into his torn satchel and pulls out a holocron, proudly showing it off like one would to a large fish freshly caught in one of yavin's lakes.

"that's great, cyar'ika, but can you tell me why your clothes are in tatters?"

"oh," luke says, as if he just realized how the sleeve of his tunic is torn at the shoulder. "i was attacked."

"...by what?"

luke ponders for a moment, eyebrows scrunched and hand under his chin, then, "i don't know. it was too dark to see. but i made it out alive!" he spreads his arms out wide, showcasing his still in tact limbs and the large, ragged tear along the side of his ribs. if din squints, then he can see faint scaring, the effects of too sharp claws, and a splash of blood that he prays isn't luke's.

then he sighs. did he expect anything less from his husband? obviously not because he's already pulling out his sewing kit out from the kitchen drawers.

"give me your cloak and leave the rest of your clothes in the washroom. i'll get to the worst of them later."

luke bounds up to him and smacks a loud, wet kiss to the apple of din's cheek. "thank you. i swear this is the last time."

din hum, unconvinced. "that's what you said last week when you came home in your underwear."

"hey, it's not my fault! i didn't know those vines would try to eat me!"

"the vines didn't try to eat you, love. the creatures controlling them did."

"well," luke huffs, pressing the warming indent of a smile to din's cheek, "at least you didn't have so sew much."

"that's because you didn't come home with much."

luke kisses him one last time with a conversation-ending raspberry for good measure, then he scampers off to the 'fresher, saying something about how din didn't really mind his lack of clothing when they were alone.

din sighs again because, yeah, luke made a point there, then he picks up his husband's cloak and assess the damage. it's not as bad now that he looks at it, but the giant, singeing hole on the back conjures up more questions that luke will most definitely disregard with a wave of his hand.

as din is threading the needle and wondering just what kind of attack might've caused this much damage, grogu chooses that moment to enter the kitchen. he doesn't greet din or ask where luke is or say much, for that matter. because he's too busy holding the seams of his torn shirt and looking at din with his too big, too dark eyes. he lowers his ears, sheepish, and smiles, not as sheepish when he's also giggling.

din doesn't even sigh this time because he had a feeling his son would enter their home exactly like his husband did. call it the force or a father's intuition, or even just a sixth sense for knowing when his jedis do anything involving the need for a needle and thread and-slash-or a batca patch. without looking up from his work, din holds out his hand and grogu is slipping out of his top to levitate it directly into his palm.

"your father is in the 'fresher, ask him to find you another shirt."

grogu gurgles an affirmative sound and waddles off down the hall. from behind, din can see a little tear in his shorts where it looks like something bit him. whatever it was, din hopes grogu bit it back. he also hopes luke notices the tear and puts it in with the rest of the clothes that need repairing.

it's not an easy job, taking care of two jedi with a penchant for trouble, both luke and grogu have proven that it's a handful, more than what either of them may realize. so it's a good thing din has two hands and is more than willing to accept whatever his jedi throw at him.

I was perusing through my dinluke google doc and found this little au I thought of a while ago that I am absolutely never going to do anything with.

I figured I’d post it in case anyone else gets inspired by it.

(And no. I don’t even like Fantastic beasts and hate JKR. I thought of this before I lost my taste for HP in general)

Grogu is an obscurus. He was born to a wizarding family before they knew what he would become. For unknown reasons, the family is gone and he’s been adopted by a family of muggles who don’t know he’s magical. As he becomes of age, his magic starts to manifest, obscurus powers enough to have become known out in the world. Just as the Ministry hears about it, so does Gideon, the newest dark wizard in the game, and he wants the raw power that comes with an obscurus. He sends goons to kill Grogu’s family and to bring Grogu to him, but somehow the plan gets interrupted. Din, a muggle with no knowledge of the wizarding world, will stumble across the scene, and will hear a baby crying. He finds Grogu and takes him in, initially with plans to return him to someone who can help, but quickly realizing this baby is remarkable. He doesn’t understand his powers, but he vows to protect him, and loves him. Essentially becomes his father figure. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker, an auror, has been assigned to Grogu’s case.

It's sadly time for Kalluzeb to retire to Lira San, buy a nice house with a white picket fence, and adopt 2.5 kids and a golden retriever. Which is exactly the same as what they did in canon. Safe travels, boys.

Things are heating up, Round Six!

I love how Din is daddy issues for Luke at least twice-over.

We know that Din is a parallel to Anakin--like he is more “Anakin-like” within the story than Luke is, on top of being a masked father figure with a deep voice.

But Din is so much like Owen Lars it is not even funny.

They both are grouchy and would say “Get off my lawn!” or tell the kid in the house to turn down that music (”is that what you even call music these days?”). Both are overprotective and do not trust easily with their family at all but by the Force, their kid will learn the value of failure and hard-work (ie. Luke on the farm and Grogu in the covert). Din happily chose a quiet cottagecore lifestyle that he has to fund through bounty hunting...but if he had the talent (and eventually he may) you know he is going to find another, nicer way to live. Maybe not farming of sorts but he’ll do something more akin to that than being a hunter. How he tries to shoo off all the crazy Force-stuff before having to accept it (Owen would’ve eventually and bregungindly). 

THE DAD NAPS. You know they both nap sitting up, arms crossed, and probably snore.

And the “he is my own” is something Din would say without a doubt. 

Also, being in love with a small, feisty blond who can shoot (how much we wanna bet Luke learn his blaster skills from Beru) with steady hands and a smart-mouth?

God, Dinluke is so cannon.
