Had a fun Sunday shoot with Gio from Key Models and was feeling kinda diptich-ish so I made these.

POSTER REFINEMENT

Because i was unhappy with the final poster designs for my formative, I decided to take a step back and rethink my theme. After ee group critiques and 1-on-1 feedback i decided it was best if i kept the overall theme of my formative poster but made it more specific. During the 1-on-1 feedback i brainstormed with david about ideas on how to do that, in which we discussed my connection to the term Westie and the culture behind it. However, a stronger idea i came up with during the feedback was the idea of exploring further into my personal connection with Piha, which then lead me to exploring how places we hold a connection to are here for us when we are on earth, and they stay here long after we have left. In turn, how Piha will be here for me to enjoy and connect with whilst i am alive, and it will remain here long after I am gone.

in the above picture you can see poster sketches i came up with based on the previously mentioned ideas, most specifically the idea of Piha “(be)for(e) me” and “after me”. I chose to use Lion rock to represent Piha in most of the sketches, as is what makes iconic part of Piha that makes it unique. I struggled to figure out compositions that i was happy with that worked both as individual posters AND together, this lead me to created a diptich that have overall connecting elements but worked as individual designs as well, this design can be seen on the bottom right.

Further refinement

Pictured above is some stages of refinement in went through for my idea.

In the left picture you can see i further refined the shape of text, and added details like the rock cut out in the letter P. I also refined overall composition, trying out a different angle of Lion Rock (the mountain shape in the poster) than what i went with in my original concept sketch, but i found the silhouette was not as iconic or recognisable, which led me to switch back to the original angle i used, as seen in the right picture. In the right picture i further refined text an composition with the adjusted silhouette.

Last refinement stage

For the last refinement stage i further cleaned up text shape and placement. The most obvious change is the inverted colors from one poster to another, i did this not only because i felt it looked cool, but it also helped differentiate the two posters, whilst also symbolising a change from day to night and in a way, life and death (before and after), which works well in the context of these posters. I also added detail in the holes of the P and A in the first poster, meant to represent the Piha (Lion Rock) and me, i hope it isn’t too illustrative, as i really like it and think it adds depth and interest to text and poster as a whole.

I plan to move to final stages of poster design after this. Unsure if i will add any color, as i don’t know of it would enhance the design. If i were to add any it would a dark colour to replace the black, such as navy.
