“Ancient beast mauled by man’s hand hangs in the air. Its last mournful song tears through the refinery making walls shake but you can’t hear anything. The oil glows bright blue and its smell tickles your nostrils.
Here’s your key. The key to a new age.”
My @dishonoredgiftexchange gift for @karnaca78! I decided to pick “whale oil” as my prompt

high chaos emily is so juicy, ESPECIALLY if corvo was low chaos in dishonored 1. high chaos corvo to high chaos emily—we can see a direct through line. emily draws a picture of corvo’s assassin mask. she makes the comment that if corvo didn’t kill all the usurpers, she would have had them killed. it’s generally a “worse” ending and we can easily see how high chaos emily came to be.
but LOW chaos corvo to high chaos emily? delicious to think about. emily isn’t following the example of her father. in fact, given everything we know about jessamine and the comment she makes when she’s released from the heart (something about how emily has become everything jessamine was against) emily isn’t following either of her parents’ examples.
this isn’t to say that high chaos emily doesn’t make sense in terms of the character or story. it does! emily is ten when her mother is killed in front of her, she gets kidnapped, rescued, only to get kidnapped again and held hostage. and then fifteen years later it’s happening again! her father is taken from her and her friend is killed and she’s been overthrown. she has not only a motive but the means (thanks to the outsider) to carve through everyone that gets in her way.
but. imagine what happens after the game. what happens when corvo, who executed an entirely bloodless campaign, wakes up and finds emily the vengeful? what happens when emily, whose mother’s last words were of disapproval, has to face her father?

Since it's been long enough, I felt like reminding everyone of the City Watch Officer that was out there chilling in the Void along with the Outsider.

In D2 right at the start of Addermire when you've docked in Karnaca, there's a room all the way at the top of a building. The only way to reach it is by using blink. It's right under the massive Delilah poster. 120 hours and this is the first I've seen it. Inside isn't much but a body, a collectible painting, and a witchs diary.
Something about the way the sun fills the little room and the clean paintings are kept.. Stepping outside and the pure isolation of silence. It's such a vibe lmao

Guard #2: careful, that looks a bit like the crown killer
Emily: oh she's h... she's so hu....
Guard #1: she's what? Is she hurt?
Emily, bowling Grim Alex like a bowling ball: she's HUNGRY

So was the Outsider talking to Emily in the first game retconned? I ask because in the second game the Outsider goes: “I never expected us to meet.”
Yet in the first game we can find Emily saying in her sleep: “Why are your eyes black?”

Man, dishonored*….what a game. Target audience: me. I remember losing my shit when I saw the trailer. I remember when I’d explain to people why I thought Dishonored was so good I’d lead with ‘okay so it’s set in a gloomy industrialized whaling city—’ and everyone would be like ‘okay I already understand why it’s your favorite’.
When it came out I was in college and was going home for a long weekend to visit my mom and she was like ‘I saw this game that just came out that reminded me of you idk if you’ll like it but I bought it for you’ and Of Course it was dishonored because Target Audience: me. So I consumed it for a weekend, and then I went back to my Videogame-less dorm many an hour away.
And then hurricane sandy hit as soon as I got back and I lost power for a week and everything was wet and I was existing by candlelight and people were like ‘hmmmm watch out for all the displaced rats coming out of the drowned subways, hmmm watch out for hantavirus’ and I was like ‘wow……steeped in vibes…..’ My entire sense memory of that game is linked to the weekend before and then that week.

With a hyperfixation comes an urge to create an OC based on that hyperfixation😤😤
(go further if you want to learn about him more)
William was infected, but his will to live, even when he was losing his sanity was so strong that Outsider gave him his mark. I'm still figuring out what powers he has. I'm sure he has some kind of an improved version of dark vision, which he uses constantly because he's blind because of plague, he also has the swarm of rats, but he uses them not as an attack but as his little assistants.
During the plague with Outsider's magic at hand he helps other infected.
This is his design after the plague, when he was found by either Piero or Sokolov. You see, at that moment, Outsider's mark was kinda the only thing keeping William alive (and keeping his hair in place too). So, as scientists, they were both curious how that could be, and took him in.

I didn't make a fullrender of his appearance during the plague, but I have a little sketch here!

What I love about Dishonored (1+2 in particular) is how it confronts the protagonist with their privilege and the blindness that has given them to outside developments.
Like, roughly put, the main bad guys in both games are institutions that were able to get this bad during the time the protagonist still had power. It is only after they are thrown from their position as Royal Protector/Empress that they are confronted with the faults in their own system.
2 is more explicit in this than 1, I think also because the intended protagonist of Emily has kept this blindness throughout the franchise because she was only a child in the first one.
But the Abbey, the guard violence, and the Duke of Serkonos were all able to get more malicious because she wasn't paying attention. And it wasn't an issue until she got on the other end of the stick.
