the ‘otherside’ disc theory, or watchers’ music

@bc-jpeg​ and I developed a theory around the minecraft ‘otherside’ disc by Lena Raine lately. it stems from two original theories by Coanderson05 and B2_Code_B2 that Cat found on Reddit, but it interprets in-game facts in a different direction.

so, what about the disc? and watchers? what it has to do with XP spheres? and above all that -- why is it special for Grian and Mumbo?

origins of the melody

all songs are stories. what is this story about?

the initial authors connect ‘otherside’ to the End dimention, as the disc can only be found in strongholds. from their perspecive, the melody is about the end itself and creatures that live there and is composed by these creatures, with all the ‘portal strangeness’ that we can hear. but it doesn’t quite work: this melody is too cheerful and is based on the human music laws, harmonies and rythms, though I cannot deny the ‘otherness’ in its sounds. futhermore, I doubt that endermen are capable of playing musical instuments, so it’s definetely not their creation.

our theory suggests that the melody was composed on earth a long time ago. it were players who created it -- they were just having fun, altering the world around them and developing their culture. in their music there was nothing but pure happines, love and passion to the act of creation.

someone was watching them.

the watchers, ancient creatures that have been present since the beggining of history, were spectating this beautiful act. they did not know about the difference between consuming people’s positive or negatve emotions at the time -- they were merely entertaining themselves with the cheerfulness of those players. at some point, they decided to take this cultural experience with them to their dimention -- so they had to learn how to perform it. this is where ‘strangeness’ and ‘otherness’ that intertwine with the melody that seems quite usual to the human’s hearing from: the recorded music was played by watchers in the End dimention or near End portal.

this is why ‘otherside’ in its meaning is not the End. the ‘otherside’ is our world, that is the opposite reality for watchers.

the ‘otherside’ is where they heard the tune;

the ‘otherside’ is what they loved.

the XP meaning

the XP, experience, is all around the minecraft nature. it represents history since the creation of the world. it is history of ground and mountains (XP from ores), life and death (XP from players or hostile mobs), history of ‘then’ and ‘now’ (XP from smelting in furnaces and other processes), history of everything. for player XP is lifetime, XP is skills, XP is, at last, culture. you gain XP from the world and its legacy, and you put your knowelege into making your own: enchanting armor, tools and weapons, reparing them, naming things as you claim them yours. XP serves for putting life into inanimate. in this theory, the ‘otherside’ disc contains the players’ XP from a long time ago. those players who composed the song had nothing in their experience but pleasure and happines, friendship and love, they were sharing those feelings as watchers were comsuming them, and that experience was put into this disc. the ‘otherside’ have some magic into it not only from the way it sounds but also from the method it was created with -- it is the XP of the happiest generations of players existed. the ‘happily ever after’ ones. but then, watchers discovered how delicious negative emotions are.

Grian and Mumbo

this disc is one of the essential melodies for the duo. not only does it sound numerous times in Grian’s videos where Mumbo is mentioned (take, for example, his escape room for Impulse and Jimmy), but also it is the, as I would say, anthem of their reunion. it is the song that is playing during their first meeting after Mumbo’s hiatus in Season 9 while XP is pouring all over them from dispencers Grian put into the Vault. it is the moment of pure happiness and joy. it is the same feelings that are originally embodied into the disc by watchers.  the same feelings that Grian had lost long ago, when Mumbo was gone.

the same feelings that he fears his friends would not be able to experience until they’re free from the watchers’ timeloop. ‘otherside’ containes the feelings of people who never met watchers, who never knew they ever existed, who lived in freedom while being curiosly observed by good and kind creatures from the end. Mumbo lives in the same world, but it is an illusion because watchers don’t allow him or anybody else to see them. the only person who knows it is Grian. he is torn apart between his wahcter-like nature and kind and pure soul that wishes nothing but happiness for his friends. he does all that he is capable of -- he spoils the feast for watchers every time he has the oppotrunity, even if it has its painful consequances. and on the hermitcraft server -- in their collective dream, where souls are free from pain and suffering -- he cannot do more for Mumbo but give him XP -- history of the ancient world, history of ‘happily ever after’-- and play the ‘otherside’ disc, the artifact of the past and enbodiment of his sincere, secret dream... for them to be happy and free.

Why does this drama keep misinterpreting my requests for on-screen penetration?

The amount of collapsing they are doing into each other’s arms is beginning to rival Listening Snow Tower.

Snake Lady is soooo dumb. What does she think is gonna happen when Ming Ye, destroyer of Devil God, comes back. Is he gonna be “OK, squatters’ rights” and peace out? But then I also don’t know what she thought when she did all that insanity when he was in seclusion. Did she think he was gonna go “oh, you committed some light genocide? NBD, let’s go have dinner.” Oh, and if her brains are scrambled, why is the rest of her tribe similarly afflicted by dumbness?

It is not in the least surprising that the ep ends like:

I am snarking a lot because while I am enjoying the visuals and the acting and the story I (a) really want to get back to murder meow-meow and his bamf wifey and (b) by now I find MY and SJ incredibly frustrating and rather stupid for different reasons and while they did not orchestrate their misery, they ably assisted in it and so I am just frustrated by them. 

Communicate, think things through, take your time - you are freaking immortals, you don’t need to rush like it’s the last baguette on sale in the supermarket.
