Thinking a lot about how in One Piece there's a continuing theme of self sacrifice that often doesn't meet its end (I won't say always because there are some characters who have eaten shit for a cause). But I just think about how easy it would be to just accept their sacrifice but the narrative won't allow that. Robin, Zoro, Sanji, Jinbe, they've all tried to give their life for the sake of others but they can't because they really don't have to. I think about Robin's "I want to live" regularly. It's so easy to die for someone but it's so much harder to live for them. And living for them gives back so much more than dying for them does. Dying is just a moment but living lets you have more moments and more time to show how much you care and lets you do so much for others. I feel like a lot of other shonen show dying as one of the bravest things you can do but One Piece is so different because it shows you that living is actually the bravest thing.

it should be said that the w*ncesties that love the finale for some fucking reason are just exposing themselves as samgirl (gn) posers. yes, i myself am a casgirl (gn) and deancoded so im inherently biased but you will NEVER catch me out here saying the finale honored sam’s arc or went the way sam would’ve wanted. not only would he be PISSED the second dean died and gone on a rampage, he would have actually laughed in the face of anyone who tried to tell him he 1. didn’t marry eileen 2. didn’t throw a huge funeral for dean after letting him go (not that he would have let dean go, that mf would have actually called an ambulance) and 3. named his fucking son dean and then raised him to be a hunter. sam woulda killed himself out of spite to just avoid all that. you think supporting the finale is equivalent to supporting sam?? get real with yourself. you just liked that it was kinda fruity bw the brothers for the first time in 12 seasons.

Fun Facts From The OG Pokemon Anime

(that the Pokemon company themselves seem to have forgotten)

Team Rocket Meowth is supposed to be the only Meowth that stands on its hind legs. He had a whole backstory in "Go West Young Meowth" about teaching himself to walk and talk like a human to impress a rich pet Meowth (spoiler: it did NOT work). The original game supports this, as the Meowth sprite is sitting, but I think every game sprite since then has just copied Team Rocket's Meowth. Alolan and Galar Meowth have always been shown on two legs, so they might just be Like That as part of their regional variations, but Kanto Meowth is primarily quadrupedal.

Ditto are able to become perfect copies of whatever they transform into. The ONLY Ditto that retained its ._. face when transformed was Duplica's Ditto in "Ditto's Mystery Mansion," and the whole episode revolved around Duplica trying to help Ditto fix this quirk. (Ironically, Team Rocket scared it into doing so, being accidentally helpful as is their way.) Granted, the Ditto in Detective Pikachu was experimented on, so that one might have an actual genetic malfunction.

Jesse, James, and Meowth's motto is apparently a hilariously positive messed-up version of the ACTUAL Team Rocket Motto. According to Team Rocket members Butch and Cassidy in "The Breeding Center Secret," this is how it's supposed to go: To infect the world with devastation! To blight all people in every nation! To denounce the goodness of truth and love! To extend our wrath to the stars above! [Team Member Names Here] We're Team Rocket, circling Earth all day and night. Surrender to us now or you will surely lose the fight!

so glad i finally got to updating their designs.

bonus: previous designs under the cut!

Ripley was originally concepted in early to mid 2020, whilst at my grandmother's house for the weekend. These two pieces were made to help me brainstorm:

I am unsure if they had a name back then, as the current name Ripley was decided on just a few days ago when I remembered his existence. Essentially his whole story is that his trainer was abusive, and ditched him after his float was damaged, seeing him as useless.

As for Nova, a lot has changed from when I concepted her. I've swapped around design concepts a lot. Mostly relating to whether or not she should be shiny, as well as her chipped ear and emblem on the shoulder. None of which her current design has, as all those details were directly linked to her original backstory and lore.

The chip was what allowed her to shift back and forth between different evolutions; inspired by a similar eevee from the Pokémon Adventures manga.

(Just to clarify: she no longer has the ability to shape-shift, but instead to temporarily fuse with another Pokémon, effectively combining the adaptive elements of both an Eevee and Ditto together into a unique ability. )

The insignia on the shoulder was a mark of allegiance to her rebellion against the humans who wronged them. And her being shiny was just because I enjoyed the colors.

And then there are these last two designs. Also a remnant of the shape-shifting ability, I originally wanted her to be able to change into a super powered-up fusion of all the eeveelutions, as a sort of final form. But as I grew up and got more into the Fandom (as well as having my design torn to shreds by a Poketuber's Discord community), I realized the idea was too common, and decide to go for a new angle.

Both drawings below are redraws of an original drawing I made around age 7, which I still have today. The one on the left was an attempt to mimic the Ken Sugimori style, made around age 11. The one on the right was done sometime between 2020 and 2021.

Honestly I love looking back at my old art and adapting it to my new knowledge and experience. It's a like time capsule.

Oh, I also at one point recreated the design using Pokémon Mega Construx pieces. It was amazing.

happy newjeans comeback day!! other than OMG possibly being my favorite newjeans song to date, i’m in love with how much the mv connects with ditto and the commentary behind it... 

the ditto mv shows the relationship between idols and fans and how they gain comfort and happiness from each other, but in the end it shows haesoo outgrowing her idols as she realizes its consuming her too much that she forgets about her real life interactions and relationships. hence, she destroys the camera (the thing that connects her with the group) showing how she has decided to cut her connection with them. (further proof of this is her not returning minji’s calls, and the girls writing out ‘haesoo where are you?’)

the OMG music video shows the idols’ side and how they react with, essentially, their fans forgetting about them. at it’s core, it’s technically them going through an identity crisis as they don’t know who they are without the context of them being an idol. but in the end, everything that they come up with can still be connected to them being an idol.

hanni thinks she’s an iphone -- because fans always see idols as a commodity and self project towards them. (”i’ll be your voice, i’ll sing for you.” “it doesn’t matter who i am, i exist only for you.”) 

hyein and haerin are still stuck in their persona. fans commonly view and call idols as certain personalities (came straight out of a movie, a princess) or through their representative animals (e.g. haerin as a cat)

minji is still acting as a leader for the rest of the group. she sees herself as a guiding force since that’s her unofficial role within the girls. she doesn’t realize that she, too, is affected by the identities and personalities that come out from being an idol.

danielle KNOWS she’s an idol, and is skeptical about everything. her part for the mv was SOOO meta and it confused the hell out of me a lot!! but to me, her part is essentially the part of fame where you don’t trust anyone or anything going on at a given moment. you feel like you always have to be “on” at all times and can’t have any rest since you’re a public figure. to some extent, i think she is the voice of reason to the rest of the girls as she is the most conscious on who they actually are. but they are still clearly in a mental institution meaning she hasn’t moved on from being an idol and is still technically reminiscing about the past.

arc im not sure how to let you know gently that Anatomy by kitty horrorshow has been the foundational pillar for my Housefuckery since at least 2018

it was the first time my little brain was exposed to the concept of a haunted house that wasn't ghosts bc every variation of that concept has always just been the cartoon disneyland ride to me no matter how demonic they tried to make the ghosts. it was my proper gateway into hill house. something in me that loves a Place was flayed open to the world on that night and now i trail my insanity about Places around like a slug bc kitty horrorshow made a 30-minute game that looks like minecraft

Cardinal sin of storytelling is lack of hierarchy. If a scene, a plot point, a character moment is allotted time, allotted space, impactful on the reader, it should be important in the story. If a scene, a plot point, a character moment is important to the story, it should be allotted space and time.

If all parts of a narrative are given the same level of attention then it’s impossible to unpick the vital from the trivial. The reader may well focus in on the irrelevant F-plot and ignore the A-plot if there’s no signal to distinguish between them. Of course, you can mess with hierarchy to confuse and obscure. If an author wants the reader to miss a very important detail or become interested in a Red Shirt for purposes of plot twist—fine! Go right ahead.

Otherwise, it’s a pain to follow a story that keeps winding up certain elements and then doing nothing. In a series where characters L and K are given the majority of screentime in the first large story arc, we expect to see L and K return for more screentime later, be dynamic, be given and execute character arcs, be given a backstory. If L and K are then killed off—good job to the author. They’ve successfully misdirected the audience to obtain emotional impact. If L and K become background characters for the rest of the series and have no dynamism or story arc, serve no purpose in exploring the setting, never have their introductory problems and flaws addressed—bad job. You’ve invested precious time in characters that were never intended to pay off, the audience is overlooking your main characters in favour of L and K, and all your work from this point forward will be interpreted purely within the context of ‘what does this mean for L and K?’.

Exceptions can be made in the case of wrap-ups. If an arc, a subplot, a story element has been set in motion, developed, and closed out by establishing a new status quo with no outstanding or unresolved problems, then the author can safely abandon it. They can spend as much time as they want introducing new characters/settings, giving them an arc, then sending them on their way. But even then, if your episodic elements get more attention than your ongoing elements, it’s an uphill battle to maintain stakes in the ongoing plot.

Hierarchy of detail helps maintain stakes. Audiences will listen to what’s told to them. The more attention is drawn to a story element, the more closely audiences will pay attention. Accidental misdirection leaves the audience confused and the author impotent as thousands of viewers laser focus on destiel (story element given 11 years of plot-impacting focus) instead of…whatever the hell supernatural was trying to do.

Maybe the real reason pokemon want to battle and become stronger is because, deep down in their genes, they know they came from legendary-powerful Mews and they desire to reverse their ancestors’ inexplicable decision to nerf themselves in favor of becoming ice cream and caterpillars.
