so glad i finally got to updating their designs.

bonus: previous designs under the cut!

Ripley was originally concepted in early to mid 2020, whilst at my grandmother's house for the weekend. These two pieces were made to help me brainstorm:

I am unsure if they had a name back then, as the current name Ripley was decided on just a few days ago when I remembered his existence. Essentially his whole story is that his trainer was abusive, and ditched him after his float was damaged, seeing him as useless.

As for Nova, a lot has changed from when I concepted her. I've swapped around design concepts a lot. Mostly relating to whether or not she should be shiny, as well as her chipped ear and emblem on the shoulder. None of which her current design has, as all those details were directly linked to her original backstory and lore.

The chip was what allowed her to shift back and forth between different evolutions; inspired by a similar eevee from the Pokémon Adventures manga.

(Just to clarify: she no longer has the ability to shape-shift, but instead to temporarily fuse with another Pokémon, effectively combining the adaptive elements of both an Eevee and Ditto together into a unique ability. )

The insignia on the shoulder was a mark of allegiance to her rebellion against the humans who wronged them. And her being shiny was just because I enjoyed the colors.

And then there are these last two designs. Also a remnant of the shape-shifting ability, I originally wanted her to be able to change into a super powered-up fusion of all the eeveelutions, as a sort of final form. But as I grew up and got more into the Fandom (as well as having my design torn to shreds by a Poketuber's Discord community), I realized the idea was too common, and decide to go for a new angle.

Both drawings below are redraws of an original drawing I made around age 7, which I still have today. The one on the left was an attempt to mimic the Ken Sugimori style, made around age 11. The one on the right was done sometime between 2020 and 2021.

Honestly I love looking back at my old art and adapting it to my new knowledge and experience. It's a like time capsule.

Oh, I also at one point recreated the design using Pokémon Mega Construx pieces. It was amazing.

More Experiment au stuff

I have got a lot more thoughts on this au so buckle up!

So first of all I thought that Atticus and Oliver shouldn't have all the fun of being hybrids, so I decided to add more to the bunch. There's Arven who gets to also be a ditto hybrid but he is somehow half shiny. He doesn't remember or know about that however due to extreme repression. His subconscious keeps him stable until the memories start coming back.

 Then there's Rei and Akari. In this au they are siblings with Rei being 15 and Akari being ten when their arc starts, being a bit younger when they were brought to the Experiment. They get to go to Hisui together.

Rei is made into a Honchkrow hybrid. His hair is now black naturally and his eyes are red. He has the wings attached to his back and is capable of flight if he learns how to.

Akari was made into an Eevee hybrid. She has the ears and tail. Her eyes are brown and her hair is now naturally brown but at the tips it is her original hair color. She also has the fur growth around the neck that Eevees have

 Then there is Hop. He is made into a Corviknight hybrid. Besides the wings he also has Corviknight eyes and his hair has a bit more of a blackish color to it. He can also learn how to fly. Yes Leon is royally pissed off when he learns that Hop was taken.

 I may still add a few more on this side of the Experiment au but there are also 3 major characters who were involved in experimenting on the above people.

The first of which is Colress. In this au he is not of sound mind, he is absolutely insane. He got it in his head that he needed to play Arceus and create hybrids. He somehow got a bunch a bunch scientists together to do this.

Two of them were Sada and Turo. I’m going to say that this was either before they got into time travel or something. They are not the best of parents, especially because they let their kid get gooped. They are also the ones who blew the whistle on the whole experiment thing, however. If you were to ask them it would be because they recognized the error of their ways. The real answer is that they got fed up with being the only scientists there who actually wrote down their research and the surgical processes and they were fed up with it.

Violet is a Pokémon trainer that after journeying quite a few regions decided to settle down and live deep in the woods where no one would bother her.

She was born in Glitch City and assumes that is the reason that her shadow is all glitchy and pixelated.

She visits the main part of the unknown region she resides in from time to time, but mostly keeps to her self and uses a tumblr blog to substitute human interaction. She was in Sinnoh during the Space Time Incident and that is where she got Charlie. She is known to be carefree, reckless, and antisocial. Also she’s 6’8. Hello! I am Professor Boris Musa, and i want to take this opportunity to talk a little bit about myself!

I'm currently 55 years old, head of the Marawhetu University of Pokémon Studies (MUPS) and my research topics focus on the typing of Pokémon, especially of hybrid-Pokémon and Pokémon that can undergo a change of physiology without evolution, to keep it brief.

I also oversee the candidates for starter Pokémon for the official Marawhetu Gym Challenge.

I am married to Professor Cocos, Professor Agonis and Professor Kōwhai. We do not officially share a last name as it would affect our publications. It is our agreement that our last name in spirit is "Grove" though, simply because it is funny.

I don't tend to keep many Pokémon as i meet a lot during my research, but a few are permanently in my care. Or maybe i am permanently in their care. They are as follows:

Amèli the Ursaring, the daughter of my late starter Pokémon

two Ditto, frankly i can't discern them without technological help. They both react to the names "Didi" and "Dio"

Polaris the (technically) Eevee. She had been part of a research project my wife led. She is a Eevee-Vulpix hybrid, paired with the alolan variant.

Christina the Slowking. She's sort of a support Pokémon as she helps me hear. My ears sadly aren't the best anymore, but she makes up for it with ease.

Wurmple. Currently unnamed, she is actually more of a pest? As in, i found her rummaging through a supply cabinet. I found her cute though, so instead of chasing her out, i allowed her to stay. Don't be alarmed if she suddenly peeks out of my clothes.

//Professor Musa is a large, heavy man. Upon seeing him, one can't help be be reminded of an Ursaring. He often wears a simple colorful T-Shirt beneath his iconic Labcoat. His large beard almost entirely hides his warm smile. His dark, rough skin suggests he spends a lot of time outside. He has a tribal style tattoo around his Temple which is partially covered by his short, gray-ish black hair.

This is Asher, my Pokemon Violet trainer oc.

Asher is a student at Uva academy, known for his high grades and love for his team. It’s not seen here, but he has fangs! Two sets actually! Four fangs on top and four more on the bottom.

He has Magika the Meowscarada, Salt lamp the Garganacl, Blubby the Clodsire, Squooble the Pawmot, Brioche the Dashbun, and Porkbelly the Oinkologne. He really only got himself a team because Nemona wanted him to be his rival.

He is a very tidy person and keeps his dorm room looking nice at all times, despite adventuring out as often as he does.

Backstory below, warning for talks of death.

Years ago, there was a secret gene splicing project in Unova where a scientist known by the name of Dr. Larkspur started her journey to create a powerful hybrid between humans and pokemon. For the experiment, they collected the dna of pokemon that were known for their flexible genes like ditto, zoroark, eevee, and they even snatched up the smallest tube of Mewtwo dna. These samples were then mixed with the dna of humans to create the hybrids.

But one day, he was forced out of his test tube. The first thing he heard was the sound of glass breaking and someone shouting “SHREAD THE DOCUMENTS! BREAK THE EQUIPMENT! LEAVE NO EVIDENCE BEHIND”. He fell right out of the tube and hit the floor with a wet shlap. He was too scared to even move, meaning that he was spared since they thought he was dead. People left and he fell back asleep once more, the time spent laying there turning him into a normal type and the soul of his dead test-tube-neighbor entering his body gave him the ghost dual typing. This ghost would be later named Anasi and have shared ownership of Asher’s body.

Years passed after the incident and soon the building was abandoned for good. Asher needed to leave the old lab anyways, so he wandered off into the streets of Unova. A woman, Ms. Cortez, found him and adopted him since she could tell that he was in need of care and she always wanted a child. The two went back to Paldea, where he would be raised and evolve to the form you see here. He would later attend Uva Academy and meet Arven, an upperclassman he would begin to fall in love with.

My designs for Pokemon trainers Ben and Rex

Some of my ramblings for this AU under the cut

-They don't have their powers and are both regular humans (with some exceptions)

-Bens aliens are replaced with Pokemon in this AU but I have two ideas for how they'd work

Option 1, which is what I'm leaning towards, is that they're all separate Pokemon stored in the device on Ben's wrist (basically a Pokebox, idk if I wanna call it an Omnitrix in this AU) and Ben has access to them at any time

Option 2 is that Ben can actually transform into the Pokemon which is closer to the idea of the show but I like the thought of the aliens being separate from Ben in this AU but eh

-Like I said the aliens are replaced with Pokemon, here are some that I've come up with (my opinion plus some of these may not be final because of the new games)

Four Arms-Machamp, Wrath-Incineroar, Ghostfreak-Dusknoir, Kickin Hawk-Blaziken, Crashhopper-Leavanny, Big Chill-Frosmoth, Humongosaur-Tyranitar, Pesky Dust-Ribombee, etc I don't have them all figured out yet

-Ben actually has one Pokemon on him at all times which is an Eevee (most likely named Omni...for reasons). I think an Eevee works better than a Ditto because 1) the Eeveelutions remind me of the alternate Bens 2) both Ben amd Eevee are adorable and have fluffy brown hair 3) Rex has a Pikachu it evens out 4) they both are my favs and I do what I want

-Rex's team would consist of Pokemom that resemble/have the abilities of his builds plus a Pikachu (most likely named Gear....get it?....OmniGear ;>>) because electric types fit him

I think a Metagross and an Aegislash are fitting (Metagross alluding the Punk Busters and Aegislash alluding the BFS) but I don't have much of an idea besides those, though I think a Lucario would fit him

-Bobo is a talking Primeape and he's essentially like Team Rockets Meowth, he hangs out with Rex but he isn't Rex's Pokemon

-Idk how Evos would work in this AU, I'm thinking people just turn into Pokemon-human hybrids idk how they'd be cured though because Rex doesn't have his powers

-Ben and Rex started out as rivals but ofc they became friends and lovers 😳

-Im thinking that Ben is either a champion or an elite four member (or he's just a celebrity that happens to be really strong lol). He wouldn't be a gym leader because he doesn't train with a specific type (I want Gwen to be a psychic type gym leader though)

Patton:

Patton is a breeder in the world of Pokemon! He loves to travel and explore new places with his Pokemon! He often can be seen gifting Pokemon he’s hatched to new trainers and those who aren’t able to catch their own Pokemon. His team consists of:

Togepi, who is one of Patton’s first Pokemon he hatched! It’s baby

Riolu, which very much reminds him of another very stubborn and emo friend of his

Happiny, who likes to help Pat care for and hatch the eggs and baby Pokemon he has

Eevee, whom Patton enjoys snuggles with. He’s offered to let it evolve many times, but has noticed it’s happy just the way it is, and Patton would never force it to change

Drampa, Patton’s first Pokemon! Drampa enjoys watching after all of Pat’s baby Pokemon and it’s very favorite kiddo, Patton!

Houndoom, Patton’s devil’s advocate and best puppo! Houndoom helps keep eggs warm as well!

Logan:

Logan is a field researcher who is traveling through the regions studying Pokemon and their affects on habitats that they may not have been originally native to (think regional variants like Alolan or Galarian forms). His team is:

Alakazam, Logan’s first Pokemon, an Abra he befriended as a child 

Meltan, one of his first species he researched in the field when they appeared in Kanto unexpectedly and accidentally found one in his bag when he had moved on. It’s just his now I guess.

Porygon 2, a present from a relative for his birthday one year, Logan was surprised to not receive a Porygon through trade, but a Porygon 2 as it was holding an Upgrade when it was traded to him!

Reuniclus, one of Logan’s assistance in his research, who is a little mischievous 

Tediursa, another friend Logan acquired during his travels, the Tediursa had a strong liking to the jam Logan had brought with him for a snack one day

Sylveon, a sibling of Patton’s Eevee, evolved after Logan had a strong bond and was very surprised to find a Slyveon rather than an Espeon or Umbreon (his Sylveon is also shiny! Pat gifted it to Logan as he had assumed it was a regional variant at the time. He was not correct)

Virgil:

Virgil kinda just is there going on his Pokemon journey. He’s from the Johto region though just cause I said so. Idk I just like the idea of him participating in the Bug Catching Contest in the National Park lol. His team consists of:

Ariados, Virgil’s first Pokemon, which was a Spinarak he caught outside of Cherrygrove (can you tell Grace has been replaying HGSS?)

Toxtricity (Low Amp Form), a gift from Patton as a Toxel, Virgil wasn’t entirely sure what to do with the big purple baby, but he loves this dude with all his heart and they jam out to Panic! and MCR

Haunter, a friend! Virgil found this dude in one of those places someone probably shouldnt be like a burnt down tower, but they vibed so it was all cool

Phantump, another ghost friend Virgil picked up. He was planning on taking it to Patton to take care of, but the little dude got attached to Virgil so now, as Patton put it, Virgil has graduated to dad status as well

Mimikyu, if you couldn’t tell there’s a theme of Virgil picking up ghost friends while just vibin in random abandoned places. He found Mimikyu while joining Logan on his trip to Alola to study Alolan forms of Pokemon

Absol, this gal just kept showing up right before Virgil was about to have a hard time with stuff (i.e. the time Virgil almost walked off a ledge, Virgil almost getting trampled by some Pokemon, etc. Y’know. Just Virgil having horrible luck). He ended up just catching he darn thing so it didn’t have to follow him to keep tabs on this poor unlucky child

Roman:

Roman is a contest star in the Sinnoh and Hoenn region (mostly Sinnoh though as he more specializes in their form of contests even though the twins are from Hoenn). He loves to pamper and dote on his Pokemon as well as compete along side them in the contests. (I’m working with contests as sorta a hybrid between the games and the anime and idk if that will make to anyone but me lol). His team consists of:

Swablu, big fluffy cloud that is also tiny blue bird that will sing with him. It’s part of his whole “Prince” image he built up

Milotic, one of his star Pokemon as it was one of the first to win Master Rank. Roman raised it from a Feebas he befriended when he and Remus were kids. Remus loves it too <3

Gardevoir, Roman’s first Pokemon and  one of his aces when competing in Hoenn contests as he does own a mega stone and Gardevoite to Mega Evolve it! Roman caught it as a Ralts when he and Remus were kids

Gallade, trained from a Ralts by Remus, the Gallade showed that it wanted to compete in contests rather than compete in battles, so the two traded Pokemon. Roman will usually enter doubles contests in Hoenn with Gallde by his Gardevoir as he also holds a Galladite to Mega Evolve it as well (depends on the routine which he will mega evolve)

Jigglypuff, an Igglybuff gifted to him by Patton, a drama queen raised by Roman, often sings and helps Roman commentate his contest routines

Zamazenta, a good doggo Roman befriended when he accompanied Logan to Galar for his researched. While he was investigating the Galarian Wheezing of Slumbering Weald, the twins may have snuck off to a secret altar on accident and may have accidentally become the spiritual successors to the Princes of Galar but that’s uhhhh... There I guess

Remus:

Remus is a trainer bound determined on getting every single gym badge (and Grand Trial Stamps) . What is he doing with them? They don’t know. He won’t challenge the leagues after. His team is:

Zigzagoon (Galarian form), a very energetic doggo which slight kleptomaniac tendencies

Grimmsnarl, Remus’ 2nd strongest Pokemon, it’s carried him through many a battles (it also carries the G-Max trait and can Gigantamax)

Applin, nicknamed “Dukey” after himself, this Applin was the Pokemon Roman traded for Remus’ Gallade. Roman had managed to find a Shiny Applin while out with Logan and was told how rare that was. He wanted to give Remus something of great value for taking on the care of such and important Pokemon to Remus (as the Ralts had been Remus’ first Pokemon). This Pokemon has an affinity for sour and tart things

Malamar, a Pokemon of their family that took a liking to competing in battles. It had been a gift to Remus after he completed his first set of badges

Zacian, Remus made his own doggo friend when they went wandering in the Slumbering Weald

Janus:

A Top Ranger from the Almia region who is currently traveling regions to check in with those who don’t have regular Area or Top Rangers. He has a set Pokemon team, but isn’t allowed to use them while on his job, but does use his Arbok as his Partner Pokemon. His recreational team includes:

Arbok, his trusty Partner Pokemon. The Golden Snake is a well known face in the Almia and Fiore regions (yes it’s a shiny. Fight me. It’s too perfect)

Ditto, a Pokemon he picked up because he was intrigued by the very nature of such a Pokemon and hadn’t ever come across one as they aren’t native to Almia

Zoroark, a Pokemon he had befriended during a job in Unova that involved checking in one the Lostlorn Forest

Hypno, a Pokemon causing trouble that he relocated, but it was stubborn and continued causing problems, so Janus caught it and is now rehabilitating it

Shedinja, a Pokemon that had accidentally been left behind when a trainer hadn’t realized it didn’t have a Pokeball to reclaim it once their Nincada had evolved. Janus took it in and kept it as part of his team

Kecleon, little fucker kept eating his capture disc so he threw a Pokeball at it

I just realized something about that “new” pokemon going around in pokemon go

this guy ^

so, there’s supposed to be a new pokemon that Lets Go Eevee/Pikachu players can get from transferring it from Pokemon Go, and Its supposed to be first released in Pokemon Go

I think this guy is it, but more importantly, I think I know which pokemon this guy is

I think this is Nintendo’s Canonical “Missing.No” design!

think about it! It’s been speculated to be a kind of placeholder pokemon, like missingno originally was, and in Pokemon go it’s name shows up as “???” also something in common with missingno’s of all generations!

it can transform in a variety of other pokemon, most notably a Ditto but also randomly a Kecleon

in RBY when you caught a missingno and transferred it to pokemon stadium, it also turned into a ditto by default

but also missingnos in gen 1 could also evolve and transform into other pokemon as well, as well as some missingno’s types were glitch hybrids of other pokemon, exactly how this guys situation is with Kecleon, having its cry, taking up it’s slot in the slot, but also having its own number (891)

and the third thing, is that in modern games, Missingno often appears as a Shiny Bulbasaur with set traits and attributes (this is due to the games coding of all those traits being 0, Bulbasaur is 000 Pokemon, shiny state is 0 etc) Missingo essentially being what you try to get when you turn nothingness into a pokemon

and what else can this funky little guy transform into in Pokemon Go? the Shiny Gen 2 Grass starter, Chikorita!

With all of these things, PLUS the fact that its going to be a “New” Pokemon in a game focused on the Kanto region, which is where originally Missing.no got it’s start from

I’m almost 100% certain this is at the very least a reference to the idea of a MissingNo, if not MissingNo’s new canonical “design” the “pokemon” missingno was always meant to be!

Experiment X, the product of seeing what a hybrid offspring of a eevee and a human would be like, along with some genetic altercations to replicate ditto’s abilities more. You get some anxiety ridden 18 year old who’s never seen the outside world with a DNA structure on the verge of collapsing in on itself.

But we lovingly call him X!

How to make Good Open Species!

YEP, IT”S ANOTHER COPOUT! AND IT’S LATE TOO!

But yeah, to follow-up my Creepypasta advice guide, I’m making one on Open Species! Because Open Source Characters deserves a better treatment than me bangin something out...

(Tho I do have a special thing related to Drabbles planned tomorrow, so be prepared for that!)

But yeah, Open Species. A concept I hadn’t heard of until; like a year ago. A very different ideological ecosystem; with less wide-ranging licenses like CC-BY and CC-By-SA and more regulations piecemeal on what you could and couldn’t do with the species; what features you could give them; what features have to be approved or sold by the author.

An eccentric culture; which seems to me to be a weird chimeracabra hybrid of adoptable-producing moneymaking and free culture. But, I do think there’s a lot interesting going on in this subculture, so I might as well give my own two cents on making decent ones!

So, past the break folks!

First off, while I like a lot of the Open Species, with my biggest recommendation being for PrePAWSterous’ species, I will say that there’s a depressing “crunch” in terms of creativity. They’re usually either cutesy-mammals or intimidating partial-mammals.

So, for my first piece of advice find what other people aren’t doing that you like, and put those in your species.

Like, as a starter, Ed Roth designed the notoriously grotesque Rat-Fink as an anti-Mickey Mouse, designed to embody the exact opposite of Mickey’s aesthetics. So, in the sprit of contrarianism, what would your Rat-Fink be, to other species’ Mickey Mouse?

...Huh, come to think of it, I haven’t really seen an open species based on Ed Roth’s aesthetic. Somebody really should remedy that. Point is, you need to find what you like; that you wanna see that you haven’t seen before that won’t get lost in the shuffle of slinky reptomammals and not-Eevees.

Make something nobody else is, and even if you’re going for cute or badass; there’s a lot of design space to work with that’s been untouched, see PrePAWSterous’ stuff or @tyrantisterror‘s Retrosaurs for good examples.

Secondly, go for applicable, not generic. Like, strive for a firm aesthetic goal to hit  that can be applied in many different places; rather than making it fit a large gulf that makes it feel generic.

An example of the latter a friend gave was the ones where authors just draw; like; a dog with pants and claimed full exclusivity and super-turbo-restrictions on it. And, while that’s a bit harsh, I can sort o see what he means.

To avoid that, think about the core idea, or rather the core ideas , what genres they lead to, and how open they are to expansion.

I’ll give as an example a species probably not intended to be open but that kinda ended up as one; Frank Herbert’s Sandworms from Dune. That has so many different ideas attached to it, from its burrowing and emergence from the sand to move; to its motion-sensitive hunting, to its link to the narcotic spice; to its link with the nomadic Fremen, to its ecological symbolism and wacky lifecycle, and so-on!

Each of those is not only a story hook, but alterable in numerous ways to make them your own. Look at how; for example; Beetlejuice and Tremors handled Sandworms in their own way! And yet, they have that shared aesthetic; of desert predators. Ditto for other inadvertently-Open species like Tolkien’s Orcs and Goo-girls/slimegirls!

My point is that’s the goal you should strive for! To integrate ideas that all feel like they belong somewhere; with them all feeling like a united “core,” and yet each of those ideas is usable to tell stories with and tweakable in ways that it can be altered or even just brought to the foreground and background.

And, thirdly, don’t be so restrictive with your species traits!

Like, that’s the thing that ruffled my feathers the most upon discovering the subculture. Micromanaging which aspects of the species could and couldn’t be altered and partitioning out “rare” features to be sold to other users via commissions, dates.

I can understand the issues of commerce and why you do that, but I do think that one of the best ways a species can spread is to allow others to make their mark on them like the ways above. Like, for another example, look at how Orcs spread and how the perception of them today was expanded and popularized when other settings like Warhammer or Warcraft did their own wildly different interpretations.

I can say that they wouldn’t be near as popular if they didn’t allow for so many interpretations, and I’d say that ideally, you should try to give folks as much free reign as reasonable

Even for those making them to sell Adoptables; I’d say giving that wider design space would allow for more ways to free yourself to do unique variations; that make every purchase worth it for the folks you’re selling them to.

Like, look at the art for these Slivers (Albeit collected for D&D custom stats, but still). They all share a recognizable body-type (Until Nu-Slivers RUINED IT, but I digress), but they’re wildly different compared to one-another still. That is the sort of versatility you should strive for, both in allowing and inspiring.

Though, I will admit I know relatively little about the commercial economics of such things, so feel free to comment if I was overly naiive/glib/just-plain-wrong on this point

 But yeah, I’ll proooooobably be adding more to this, if only because, given the hurried nature; I feel I wasn’t the most comprehensive. So, feel free to ask me questions or tell me what parts I might’ve skipped over!

Arceus notices and tries shaking them off, but that only results in separating Jon and Martin, with jon landing in hisui alongside Akari and Martin landing in Gear Station in modern day.
