Let's talk about upcycling furniture. I can't call this refurbishing because I feel like I completely reimagined this table instead of taking it back to its "original" vision. This is my first upcycle and although it was very minimal tool usage and very straight forward, I am proud of myself for the overall vision and desire to complete it. I often find myself starting a million projects and finishing none so this has been great!

This is how the table started. It also had black hardware but I am new to blogging and forgot to take my initial picture.

Next we sanded this B down

And painted her all nice with the inspiration of a Fabrege Egg. After spraying with the spray paint I wiped it down with a rag so the natural wood pattern would poke through.

Here she is all reassembled.

And of course, we added a little spice!
Thought about ending this by saying "hope you like it" or "let me know what you think". But I like it and thats all that matters so keep your opinions to ya damn selves!

MY BABY
It's doesn't hold much, but that's okay. It was my first time ever trying to make a container and I am incredibly happy with it. I'm the only one using it after all lol

yard work
okay, so I didn't get before photos but imagine the entire yard if fill of like 3 to 4 ft tall tumbleweeds, like this shit we piled in this corner. But it's the whole yard.

My husband wants to build a garden back here. The entire yard (front and back) is just weeds, sand, and rocks. Everything is weird and lumpy so we'll have to buy dirt and level it out. He got off work earlier than I did yesterday and started clearing the weeds out of the yard. He made a lot of progress!

We still have the back and other side of the yard to go but it's looking better!! My yard is huge 🥲 the stuff in this portion of the backyard is shorter at least.

I’ve been patiently waiting for a nice second-hand wood dresser to appear on fb marketplace or at Goodwill for months. Finally, I grabbed this one yesterday for $50.

My inspiration for this project are some dressers I saw at Anthropology that have gorgeous carved details. But I want my dresser to cost $200 or less rather than $2,000.
Of course I can’t add actual hand-carved wood, but I’ve got clay and some silicon molds + epoxy and a potential overconfidence in my DIY abilities.
First up, I removed the existing hardware and sanded this pretty lady down. She is now looking MUCH better without all those terrible stains (and the drawer pulls weren’t doing it for her, tbh).

Up next, I’ll give her a paint wash or three and start trying my hand at faking some carvings!

“DIY Wooden Blinds Installation in NZ: A Beginner-Friendly Step-by-Step Guide”
Thinking about refreshing your windows yourself? Wondering if installing wooden blinds is too tricky? You might be surprised just how straightforward installing wooden blinds NZ can be. If you’re a bit handy with tools and willing to follow a few key steps carefully, you can transform your windows without calling in the professionals—and save money in the process. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know for a smooth DIY installation, whether you’re in Auckland or anywhere else in New Zealand.
Preparing to Install Your Wooden Blinds in New Zealand
First things first, gather your tools. You’ll need a measuring tape, drill, level, mounting brackets, screws, and, of course, your wooden blind kit. Don’t skip the measuring step — this is the most important part of the job. Measure your window frame width and height in several places (top, middle, and bottom) to make sure you have exact dimensions. Windows aren’t always perfectly square, and the slight differences can make a big impact on how your blinds fit.
Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount: What’s Best for Your Windows?
Next, decide how you want to mount your blinds:
Inside Mount: This means attaching the blinds inside the window frame. It offers a clean, built-in look and works best if your window frames are deep enough to house the blinds. It’s a favourite in Auckland homes with modern window styles.
Outside Mount: If your window frame is shallow or irregular, mounting the blinds on the wall or trim around the window might be better. Outside mounting can also make your windows appear larger and adds a bit more visual drama.
Step-by-Step Installation Process for Wooden Blinds NZ
Here’s the step-by-step process:
Measure carefully again just before installation to confirm your numbers.
Mark your pilot holes for brackets using a pencil and a level to ensure they’re perfectly straight.
Drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood and then screw in your brackets securely.
Snap the headrail of your wooden blind into the brackets. This part usually clicks in place.
Test the slats and tilt function to make sure everything operates smoothly.
Make adjustments as needed so the blinds hang evenly and operate without snagging.
Remember, small errors in mounting height or levelness can make blinds look crooked or function poorly, so take your time with this step.
Conclusion:
Installing wooden blinds NZ is a manageable weekend project with the right preparation and tools. Not only does DIY installation save you money, but it also gives you the satisfaction of a job well done. If you prefer, professionals can always help, but many Kiwis enjoy the hands-on approach. Next time, we’ll talk about how to care for your wooden blinds to keep them looking fantastic for years to come.
