1990s Detroit Electro Playlist
And now we're starting to get more and more niche with these playlist posts, folks. As I continue to methodically sift through my vast collection of comps and mixes and categorize favorite songs from them based on genre, year, and location, you're gonna slowly be seeing more cool and specific playlists from me, like this one here of Detroit electro bangers from the 90s, which I'd advise you to listen to while driving, because if there's one thing that the city of Detroit's especially known for, it's cars, and this playlist not only works when its 80s-made kick drums and bass are pounding out of your system, but it's also reflective of that gray, metallic, industrial factory landscape in which many of the cars that this playlist is best deployed in were actually built!
Like, every city in which electro has flourished has fleshed out its own distinct sound of it. Although groups like Kraftwerk from Germany were the primary driving force behind the genre's founding, broadly speaking, Afrika Bambaataa fused it with hip hop in New York, Los Angeles first started pairing it with Parliament-Funkadelic's own brand of rubber-zany funk, and Detroit, by way of techno godfather Juan Atkins, brought in a steady, mechanical coldness. The entire genre itself has been rooted in a somewhat goofy aesthetic of Afro-futurist sci-fi dystopianism, but if there were distinctions between its sound in three of its foremost American hubs, those were them, I think.
So if you want some of these deeper grooves in which the electro's combined with that windowless assembly line factory floor type of vibe too, Detroit's naturally a pretty good place to find it. And I think the song within this playlist that best exemplifies it is the Microknox remix of Aux 88's "Electro/Techno," because right from jump, this is a dance joint that has sparks audibly flying off of it, making one feel as though they might need to don a welding mask in order to properly enjoy it—currently sitting at a little under 10,000 YouTube plays.
Tumblr media
And then we've also got a couple greats from the king of the ghettotech genre himself, DJ Assault, too, whose "Shake It Baby" creatively combines his own Motor City sound with that of the aforementioned LA scene's, by importing Roger Troutman's iconic talkbox vocal effect that he famously used on songs like Zapp's "More Bounce to the Ounce" and 2Pac and Dr. Dre's "California Love." (And by the way, Dr. Dre himself is an LA electro pioneer too, who was once a teenaged DJ in a group called The World Class Wreckin' Cru before he and fellow groupmate DJ Yella went on to form part of N.W.A). But even with this particular song that derives, basically, its lone lyric from "California Love" itself, the talkbox vocal is still very much coated in brutal Detroit malevolence here, as the "shake, shake it, baby" line has some zappy reverb on it, and is stated in an emotionless monotone, like a command emanating out of a loudspeaker from a robot overseeing you and your peers from a floor above 🤖—akin to a warden observing their prisoners; currently over 200.1K plays.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible:
Drexciya - "Bubble Metropolis" Aux 88 - "Technology" Alien FM - "The Future" Aux 88 - "Direct Drive" Aux 88 - "I Need to Freak" Posatronix - "Step Into My Groove" DJ Assault - "Shake It Baby" DJ Assault - "U Can't See Me" Da Sampla - "Digital System" Will Web - "Boomin'" Dopplereffekt - "Sterilization" Aux 88 - "Electro/Techno (Microknox Remix)" KT-19941 - "Face Your Fate"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So with the unveiling of this new playlist, we begin with 13 songs that clock in at 63 minutes. Spotify doesn't appear to have all that great of an electro selection, so only time will tell if I'll ever make one. For now, you're stuck with only being able to enjoy it on YouTube. And I know it's not convenient, but try to do it from a car, preferably at night!
Some more Detroit shit next week!
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

16. Do they have any plans for the future? Goals, aspirations?
Hi Mnemo!!!!

16. Hmmm.. I think it’d like to open its own club or bar or something? It’d be a While before that ever happens, though. Money is always fairly tight for it bc of its medical expenses for its plating :(

Video for Batida 31 : youtu.be/cJ_IqxO4nGI
Buy: @nyegenyegefest
Site: https://nyegenyegetapes.bandcamp.com/album/tubo-de-ensaio
Coming in hot after last year's explosive 'Tribal Progressive Heavy Metal', Normal Nada the Krakmaxter focuses his musical mythology further on 'Tubo de Ensaio', welding together a tight fusion of dancefloor-ready hybrids that further substantiate his years of experience as a producer, DJ, archivist and visual artist. Like its predecessor, 'Tubo de Ensaio' is entrenched in Lisbon's sprawling batida sound - a fusion of future-facing Afro-Portuguese dance forms including kuduro, kizomba and tarraxinha - but Normal Nada refuses to rest on his laurels. This time around, he makes vivid links to Afro-house, hard techno, trance, soca, ragga and g-funk, obscuring each element with his signature hallucinogenic haze of sinewy synths and careening rhythms.
Nada makes a bold statement on the title track, assuring listeners that he's "the real PAT (psychedelic African trance) inventor" and curving a high-octane, syncopated rhythm around dizzying distorted drones. It's not like any psychedelic trance you've heard before, but Nada's alloy is cast into a bridge between worlds; he's asking what's possible rather than making lazy aesthetic signals. The theme continues on 'Tribal Trance', a sturdy, body-shaking banger that slims down the expected hard trance palette to an aerated wheeze, punctuating spiraling toms that pulse with the moody energy of gqom. But the biggest surprise here is Nada's playful Afro-house variations: on 'AZ House 3', he slows down the tempo, looping sensual diva vocals and dusty piano notes around swinging kicks, snares and woodblock snaps; and on the house mix of 'Batida 19' he uses a deafening, serrated synth to lead the beat into heady abstraction.
Nada pokes at the calypso-rooted soca sound on the brief 'Funana Freestyle', squeezing hearty laughs and vocal snippets and on Nate Dogg dedication 'Tarraxo do Evangelho gospel' he nods to the West Coast legend with light-headed talkbox groans and glittery, g-funk inspired squelches. Completely out on his own, is one of Lisbon's most outlandish

he’s a DJ, keyboardist, and musician. the coolest thing about him is that his voice is 100% a talkbox, making his music even cooler (cause he sings!)
he is also Beat and Fifi’s son in an alternate timeline/universe lol

1980s Hip Hop Playlist (YouTube)
The history of old school hip hop in Los Angeles, specifically, is largely defined by the sudden surge of gangsta rap in the late 80s, thanks to N.W.A, and then the further proliferation of g-funk that was helmed by N.W.A's own Dr. Dre too. But before all that hard, gritty, and violent shit started spreading like wildfire, L.A.'s biggest rap fad had been their adoption of electro, an enjoyably goofy style of digital sci-fi afro-futurist dance party music that'd simultaneously been bred in New York by the likes of Afrika Bambaataa and in Detroit by Juan Atkins, who'd end up pioneering techno music with it too. But after those two places had incubated it, electro's next American destination was to be L.A., and Dre would play a significant role in its growth and spread over there too.
And it's only natural that L.A. would've picked up on this trend, because as far as back as 1979, we had already seen some of electro's post-disco inklings start to emanate from that very city's own nationally popular funk scene itself, with a classic jam like Zapp's "More Bounce to the Ounce" incorporating the talkbox that electro would use in droves for its own robotic vocals, and then George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" hitting a few years later too.
So, Dre was in a group called The World Class Wreckin' Cru, whom among others, also included future N.W.A member DJ Yella as well, and In 1984, they put out "Surgery," a brilliant electro-rap record that showcases the cut-and-scratch stylings of a still-teenaged Dre himself. In this tune, the group creatively invokes pretty much every medical trope that you could possibly think of, including a reverberatingly bleepy beat that replicates the sound of a heart monitor, a surgeon monotonously listing off all the tools that he needs from his assistant (you know how every doctor in movies and TV starts with "scalpel," right?), and lyrics that not only constantly compare Dre's magnetic DJ prowess to that of an MD, but to a PhD too—because, of course, he also happens to hold one in mixology!
Calling Dr. Dre to "Surgery"
And then following that bop is one from another of Dre's fellow Wreckin' Cru comrades, The Unknown DJ, who also became a bit of an unsung gangsta rap pioneer himself, with his production of Ice-T's famed "6 "N the Mornin'" in 1986 and then later work for MC Eiht's Compton's Most Wanted as well. Here we get "808 Beats" from him, a banger from 1984 whose backbeat consists of a clap-smack-snare-hiss and sampled heavy human breaths, which then get surrounded by some 80s synth stabs and an occasional, lovely string pad too 😌.
So, kinda remarkable that before both Dre and Unknown worked to pioneer the rise of gangsta rap in their own city, that they were together doing this much lighter sci-fi-inspired dance music instead too. Wikipedia doesn't even mention 80s L.A. in their article about electro, but it was a pretty big deal there, and then after the city's vision of gangsta rap had proceeded to go international, Dre would then take p-funk—a distinct style of funk that'd been developed by George Clinton's group, Parliament-Funkadelic—and significantly drive a new splinter of whiny-synth west coast gangsta rap with it called g-funk too, where the "g" stood for "gangsta."
World Class Wreckin' Cru - "Surgery" (273.6K+ plays) The Unknown DJ - "808 Beats" (250.3K+ plays)
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So this very unique, transatlantic 1980s hip hop playlist—there's a bunch of really good and slammin' UK rap on here too, aka Britcore—now stands at 17 songs that clock in at 82 minutes. And we were on the verge of having a more easily accessible Spotify version of this playlist too, but without the version of "Surgery" that I wanted being on there, I've decided to hold off for now.
More Cali rap next week!
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!
