Thinking about the fact that the Doctor spent a summer subbing for Harry Houdini… allegedly
It’s been buzzing around in my head rent free since he dropped that bomb. But my god, a whole summer? The Doctor doesn’t do that. They don’t stay put.
I propose he was on a rebound from Rose. He just lost her the first time, he wasn’t able to handle it, and he needed a distraction. He needed to not think, and what better way to do it than sub for Harry Houdini apparently
A story about kidnapping a baby right around the time of a Christian holiday and having a wild ritual celebration before eating it is NOT referencing the antisemitic blood libel myth, because the story is about goblins and not Jews, and anyway their noses aren't even big. Or possibly -- hear me out now -- it IS, given that fantasy fiction involves the imaginative transmogrification of the familiar into the fantastic, transforming it in a whole host of ways, but preserving, consciously or otherwise, perceptible traces of the source history, culture, beliefs, and mythology.
I find it impossible to believe Russell Davies would do this intentionally, but I also find it impossible to believe that someone with extensive experience writing in this genre, in light of all the discourse about possible antisemitic subtext to goblins in Harry Potter, goblin-esque Ferengi in Star Trek, etc, wouldn't stop a moment and consider exactly what kind of Christmas goblin story he's telling. I'm just...baffled.
Guys, can we give some recognition to the TARDIS? She heard the Doctor's speech about being the bad luck and all the self hatred he was falling into and she just refused him to let him go alone. She opened the door for Ruby. Because let's be honest, the Doctor could have been gone in ten seconds flat, and he was probably waiting for Ruby to come back, because if the Doctor is something it is hopeful, but he did not open that door himself. Was he praying for Ruby to follow him? Yeah, for sure. But the invitation to come in, the act of pulling the door open, I'm 100% convinced it was the TARDIS. She saw that he was feeling lonely again and she took matters in her own hands and opened the doors for a new person, literally. Ruby is approved by the TARDIS. I just find that so amazing. The TARDIS being sentient is one of my favourite parts of Doctor Who and I think that her relationship with the Doctor is super important, so the act of opening up her doors for another person, because she knows that Ruby will help him and keep him company means everything to me.
I’m sorry I’m sorry I usually don’t ‘liveblog’ things but was ten’s big return in Christmas Invasion supposed to be this goddamn funny? I can’t get off the floor he’s in borrowed PJs. He accidentally started quoting the Lion King. Went from 0-200 words per minute instantly and called himself out on it. Spent several minutes hyping up the fact he was going to push the threatening red button. And I’m sorry but every single word after he gets his hand cut off. I was already in tears over the CGI of it growing back but David Freaking Tennant saying “It’s a fightin’ hand!” like he’s suddenly jumped genres to Tombstone I can’t breathe-
Why did nobody tell that they sing in the Christmas Special? I knew that the goblins did but not one person mentioned the Doctor and Ruby singing. And their voices! Ahhh! I've found my new ringtone
okay, so just watched the latest Doctor Who and I gotta a theory on Ruby that probs ain’t true but it would be cool if it was: Ruby isn’t just a regular human but doesn’t know it herself. Maybe even a time lord cuz that’d be cool. And it wasn’t her mom that left her at the church but Mrs. Floods (whoever or whatever she is), as part of some plan to get to the Doctor? It’s maybe a bit close to the Clara plot but the episode did have coincidence themes going on so yeah
