Note
feel free to ignore if you’re not doing gallifrey prompts anymore, but for the whump prompts: romana + gallifrey character of choice for ! or ✓
✓: waking up either adorably confused or painfully scared
The nightmares never ended the same way twice, but they always started the same way.
Cold. Hungry. Dark.
President of Gallifrey.
It was something to cling onto. It had been one of the only things left to her, in the end. Sometimes, they had even managed to take her name; but they could never make her forget the reason they hadn’t killed her yet.
I am President of Gallifrey.
She did not have the luxury of giving into the pain.
Shivering. Wet stone. What liquid?
Blood?
The Daleks liked their torture old school. That didn't stop them from using mental interrogation, of course, but they took a very human pleasure in physically abusing their captives. Anything went: starvation, slave labour, wound upon wound…
Silence.
That was the worst part. Nobody ever understood it—no, Leela did, a little, but then Leela might as well have been nobody—but even the agony of torture was still more bearable than solitary confinement.
They could leave her starving there. They could leave her bleeding out all over the floor. They could compound her torment without doing a thing. Her own mind would fill in the blanks for them.
They would leave her there for hours, battered and bruising, and then drag her out to drill her information. They would leave her there for days, and then switch it out for days of back-breaking work. They might have left her trapped in her cell for weeks at a time; she didn’t know. On Etra Prime, so badly hurt, she had lost control of her time sense completely.
Even now, it flickered, it flared. Even now, the seconds stretched out into eternities.
And that was how the nightmares always started. Alone, in the dark. Always waiting for the next blow to land, sooner of later.
Something would interrupt it, usually. She would escape, wander down a dreamland corridor. She would be stuck—but someone else would arrive. She would be dragged bodily to the interrogation chamber—
On the way, mazelike passageways would shift around her like so much Saharan sand—and how long ago that had been! A lifetime had passed since she had last set foot in that desert.
More than twenty years.
This nightmare, like all of them, fit somewhere into those twenty years.
Her cell, first.
I am Romana. Romana…
Romanadvoratna—
Romanatre—
I am President of Gallifrey.
In this night terror they came after not an hour’s rest. She staggered to her feet—they dug into her back—and then it was damp something-like-concrete against her bare feet for countless minutes, an endlessness of corners that seemed to twist of their own volition, walls that sprang up from nowhere.
And then the interrogation.
The voices—if they could be called that—grated against her mind.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW?
She sometimes thought those screeching commands must be to blame for the chronic headaches.
WHAT ARE GALLIFREY’S SECRETS?
Too many and too heavy to be revealed in one go. Even the Titan Atlas would hesitate to shoulder that weight.
MADAM PRESIDENT?
She shivered. That was not their usual line of questioning. Whither Unit 117?
MADAM PRESIDENT, ARE YOU QUITE ALRIGHT?
The dream shattered. She startled awake.
And as always, she woke up screaming her head off. It had never mattered if she screamed on Etra Prime; no one had ever heard, anyway.
She had learnt to hold back tears centuries ago. That was basic psychic training—the type the Doctor had casually and carelessly flunked. She had learnt to get around the spells of dizziness rapidly—when to sit, when to stand. She had never learnt to wake up quietly.
“Madam President,” Braxiatel repeated, standing a measured distance from her side, lightly concerned. Perhaps there was more worry to him than he was letting on; or perhaps he truly didn’t care. “Ah, you’re awake. Are you well?”
“Yes,” she said, as her voice came back to her. She used to scream so much, those twenty years. “I’m perfectly well.”
He nodded curtly, giving away nothing. “Your wish is my command, Lady President.”
“Thank you,” she said. “But I’m fine as I am.”
“Of course,” he said.
She almost asked him to stay. The weeks on end without contact with anything, even her blasted captors, came flooding back unbidden.
But no.
She would survive.
Alone, as usual.

well, @nerdie-faerie, when i tried to answer your ask, tumblr ate it. just absolutely gobbled it up and deleted my draft. but here's my response to your prompt (must be a day ending with 'y'), a little later than expected.
you gave me free reign to pick a doctor, so i chose four for reasons that i think will become clear right away. the best parts of the doctor are often his companions, you know...
anyway, in spite of the delay and technical difficulties, i hope you enjoy!

At the sight of the soaring toaster, Romana did the sensible thing and ducked for cover.
Leela, on the other hand—who had just dashed into the room with her hair in wild disarray—stood her ground, watching the violent exchange with her usual baffled intensity.
"What is this?" she asked no one in particular. "Are we under attack?"
As if in answer, a terrific shout—not unlike a battle-cry—rang out across the console room, followed visibly by a streak of blonde and bright, lobster-y pink, weaving through the mess.
"Help!" cried the Doctor from somewhere—behind a coat rack, it seemed like, stuffed with eccentrically-coloured furs. He apparently had chosen the spot to take shelter from flying objects. "I'm under attack!"
At the sound of his voice, Leela's jaw dropped.
"They are fighting," she marveled, turning to Romana in dismay. "Again."
"Mm, yes," Romana drily agreed. "Must be a day ending with 'y.'"
Her tone was lost on the other woman, of course, who seemed more preoccupied with observing Rose—and poor Rose, she really did feel for the girl, especially after being stranded in that awful, muggy pleasure palace for two weeks.
That is, two weeks relatively. The Doctor had actually realised his error—with a rather baffled, panicky, "Have I misplaced my wife?"—immediately and turned the TARDIS around, inasmuch as it could be done, in under thirty seconds.
However, his obvious repentance was not currently under attack. Only his driving. And Rose seemed intent on making her point using every projectile at her disposal. It was lucky for her—and perhaps unlucky for the Doctor—that the TARDIS was in the middle of something not unlike Spring cleaning.
That is, it wasn't precisely Spring anywhere nearby, and the console room could not currently be called clean, but the ship was making an effort, it seemed, to offload some of her extra bulk to one central location. Presumably, she wished for much of it—the toaster, the technicolour furs—to be taken out with the trash.
The Doctor, meanwhile, persisted in hiding in the refuse while Rose flung bits of it in his general direction.
"Two weeks!" came the shrill, emphatic cry. "I was left fending off the extremely slimy advances of some snail-faced, pond-scummy blob king for two—bloody—weeks! All because you can't be bothered to read one stupid little manual!"
Rose's words were punctuated by two flying shoes. Her own, Romana could only hope. They landed with a thunk-thunk against one of the roundels, and then fell down and knocked something over behind the coat rack with a clatter. The Doctor yelped.
"I didn't mean for it to take two weeks," he protested. "You must know that!"
"Should we break them up?" Leela asked, voice hushed.
"They had me sunbathing five hours a day!" cried Rose. "I'll be shedding burnt skin for ages! I look like a lobster!"
"A lovely lobster." The Doctor's voice was muffled by coats. A few must have fallen on him. "Prettiest of the lot."
Wrong move, Doctor, thought Romana with a shake of her head. Aloud, she said, "No, I don't think we should."
Rose made a protesting noise that was something between a growl and a squeal. She had quite an impressive range, when it came down to it. For all she was young and occasionally quite silly—now, for example—the older woman couldn't help but admire her… thoroughness. And her spirit.
And she kept the Doctor on his toes, which was certainly no small task.
Not that he needed it, necessarily. His balance was bad enough on two flat feet.
Poking her head up from behind the console, Romana tried to take stock of the rustling sound that was Rose reaching with both hands to part the contents of the coat rack, behind which she could just make out the huddled Doctor.
His knees were pulled up to his chest, and his eyes were wide. Not fearful, but sort of alarmed in a general way. His wife's distress always made him distressed, not that he was normally aware of that fact. He didn't project an attitude of particularly conscious empathy.
Rather, his feelings for Rose seemed to strike him as a frequent and overpowering surprise.
Just apologise, you buffoon, Romana thought, rolling her eyes, and have done with it. They would both be happy again, and she could get a moment's peace.
The Doctor's mind seemed to move along similar lines, though not with any particular alacrity. His face suddenly scrunched up, his brows all compressed and petulant, and he cried, "Well, all right! All right, I'm sorry. Is that what you want me to say?
"I am sorry for throwing the TARDIS manual into a Saggitarian supernova and learning—rather impressively, I think—on the fly! That is, literally on the fly, Rose. And I am sorry the King of the Snit'snails was so awful to you and boiled you alive." Here, his contrition seemed to become more genuine. Some of his indignance went away. "I'll get you some sun cream, hm? And I'll put it on your shoulders for you."
"That is kind of him, surely," whispered Leela.
"Oh, not a bit," Romana whispered back. "He's just angling to get to touch her ever again."
"We can hear you both, you know," snapped the Doctor, poking his head out from between the furs. "And you are making a mess of my apology!"
Rose spoke up before Romana could. "You made quite a mess of it yourself, Doctor," she said. But her tone was calmer, bordering on amused. The tempest was over; now, they were all sailing on relatively calm seas. She stretched out her hand.
The Doctor took it. But instead of using it to help himself up, he simply shook it a little and, when she didn't remove it, pulled it to his lips to press a kiss on the skin of her palm. Rose tittered a laugh that made the Doctor smile in his giddy, infatuated way.
Fools, the both of them, Romana thought to herself.
Leela nudged Romana's hip. "I think it is time to leave."
"Yes, I think so," the Doctor agreed, too-loudly, making eyes at Rose all the while. And rather than protest how ridiculous that would be—for they'd only come into the console room a few minutes ago, ready once again to ship out on another absurd adventure—Romana took Leela's proffered hand and retreated without a parting glance.
The mess there could be left for another day.

oooh, something Gallifrey-related with the prompt “lighthouse“?
September Prompts 🌻
* * * *
"It's been a while since I've done any rowing," Brax grunts, rowing the oars back and forth through the murky waters. The wind and water whipping at their skin as though they were thousands of tiny sharp knives. It was almost impossible to see in front of him if it weren't for the ever-lasting matches they had. "How far now?"
Narvin lifts the lantern above his head., seeing the lighthouse on top of the rocks, its light beaming out in the distance. The lighthouse that was currently their home. "The lighthouse is another couple hundred feet away, though frankly, it's quite hard to give an accurate report in this weather. Romana and Leela should be waiting for us with Rayo."
"You know, I've never stayed in a lighthouse before," Brax tells him. "Have you?"
"No, but Leela has told me the tale of her adventure with the Doctor staying in one." Narvin puts the lantern down beside him, careful to keep a tight grip on it so it doesn't ignite the boat. The boat roughly riding over the waves made Narvin's stomach curdle, and he tries hard to hide the fact he wants to do nothing more than throw up over the side of the boat. But he won't give Brax that satisfaction.
"She calls it the Horror of Fang Rock, doesn't she?" Brax recalls. "Now there's a good title for a gothic story. Or a renaissance painting."
"You and your art," Narvin huffs, rolling his eyes. "Even now, you still talk of it."
"What's the problem with that? Hmm?" Brax glares at him. "With all the destruction and devastation that is going on in the universe right now, Narvin, it is important to find beauty even in the smallest things. Otherwise, our souls would just turn to rot and be full of hate and we'd be no better than the Daleks. You're a Patrex, I thought you'd appreciate art and its beauty."
"My relationship with art is complicated." He scowls, turning his gaze away from Brax's penetrating stare, and turns to look out at the blackness of the sea. Complicated. Because yes, he was a Patrex, and his Chapter was known for their artistic talents and Narvin did have artistic talent, but it was something he has never shown the others. Not even Brax. It was something too personal and he wasn’t quite ready to share it. Not yet.
"Everything is always complicated with you."
"Oh, like you're the one to talk." Narvin snaps. "You with your complicated timelines, your secrets and paradoxes. You have more layers than that of an onion to unravel."
"‘Touché." Brax clicks his tongue and dips his head, but concentrates on his rowing. "I'm sorry Narvin. With the Time War raging on above our heads, it's important for me to try and find beauty in the littlest things. Even if it's just the sounds of the birds chirping or seeing Rayo paint the walls of the lighthouse. Even Leela tending to the animals we have and seeing her face light up with joy when she returns from a hunt. Or with Romana in the library, reading a book by the fire. I may be selfish for saying this but...part of me wishes we could stay here, forever."
Narvin turns his eyes away from the abyss of darkness, turning once more into Brax's gentle blue eyes. "Part of me wishes it too, Brax." He says, so softly, that his voice almost got lost against the crashing of the waves as the boat continues to lurch forwards. "But nothing lasts forever."
"No," Brax agrees sadly. "Nothing ever does and forever is a very long time."
The boat hit the sand and Brax put the oars down. "Here we are." He stands up carefully, Narvin giving him a helping hand and their hands entwined together and despite being cold, miserable, and wet, Brax's warmth engulfed him like a firework and he watches Brax shift the boat onto the dry land.
On the shore waiting for them despite the howling wind and rain, were Romana, Leela, and Rayo. All wearing thick, waterproofs and had brought out two spares for them and Romana and Leela hurried over to them, fussing over Brax and Narvin like mothering hens.
"We're fine." Narvin scowls, but he was pleased with being fussed over and was secretly grateful for the new waterproof jackets for he was soaked to the bone. "We got the fish. Should last us for another two weeks."
"Let's get you all inside," Romana says, concern written on her face. "And get you two warmed up before you catch your death. Rayo has prepared you both some hot cocoa."
"Now I am well and truly spoilt," Brax says, pleased and he pats Rayo on the back. "Come and help me lift this net of fish and take it to the kitchen. We can prepare them later."
Rayo grins at Brax and he grabs the other end of the fishing net with the help of Leela, Rayo talking to Brax eagerly about art he has learned from the books in the library. Romana walks beside them, smiling softly in the lantern glow with Narvin.
Narvin for the first time in his life, despite all the death and destruction he has seen, and once upon a time thinking Gallifrey was where he belonged, finally felt at home.
But first, he had to get rid of the smell of fish before the others tried to kiss him and Rayo hug him in greeting for as Brax said earlier, it was finding beauty even in the littlest things that what matters the most.

Whouffle Week 2021 - Day 5
I’m a lurker on a Discord server that is having an open fan event to celebrate the Doctor and Clara Oswald. Despite not actually interacting for a while (long story), I decided to throw my hat into the creative ring and write along with the prompts!
1153 words; this made me sad; fck Nardole I hate Nardole this is a Nardole Un-Appreciation Blog but whatever he’s a useful plot device when you need someone who is more insufferable and less likeable than the Doctor
Prompt Five: Hypnosis/Letter
It was an average day as the Doctor milled about, attempting to stimulate his mind despite the tedium involved with staying in Bristol. Sure, it was an engaging enough town for a normal human, possibly even some extraterrestrials, but not him. There were days when all he could do to relieve the pressure was take a stroll inside the TARDIS, visiting all the rooms he could as he whiled away the spare hours, reminding himself of what was waiting.
It was 1973 and he was hiding during a particularly restless summer. With no classes, there was little he could do to engage his varying brain levels except for wandering, making plans, making lists of the places he wanted to go and the people he wanted to see soon as he was rid of his freely-acquired burden.
Although Nardole had said something about making sure to get back before… something… the Doctor allowed himself to wander the library with ease, not caring about what time it was or when he needed to be back. The ship knew what sort of fluctuations to alert him of, and therefore he took his time. He wandered, looking at the varying books and periodicals that stuffed the shelves with a sense of absentmindedness that he hadn’t experienced in a long, long while. It could almost have been considered liberating if it wasn’t for the fact he was unsure of why he was there.
Eventually, the Doctor came upon a rather worn copy of Jane Eyre, with well-thumbed pages that were frayed and soft along the edges. He flipped through it, recalling the story: a young woman of modest circumstance becomes the tutor for a titled man’s ward. She and the lord fall in love, and their love prevails in the end despite hardships and separation. He could not recall having ever read the book properly, let alone the specific copy in question, and yet a folded piece of paper fell out from between the pages. He glanced about, stared at the paper, and tucked the book under his arm before picking it up and reading the contents.
‘Doctor,’ it read.
‘How long has it been? I do not blame you—this was hidden on purpose—but I’m certain it has been more than either of us would want to admit.’
He paused. Who was this? Sarah Jane? Romana? Oh… was it Ace…? No, Ace would have said “Professor”, so that ruled her out. He squinted at the handwriting—he didn’t know whose it was despite recognizing it, so Romana was still an option. The paper was old, that part was for certain, but in the TARDIS… things were often difficult to judge.
‘Who are you with now? I hope they are treating you well. You better be treating them well in turn—don’t make me haunt you for that, of all things. Make my coming back from wherever I went to worth the while. I don’t even know how I’m going to go, why I’ll go, let alone if it’ll be anyone’s fault. It’d probably be the Time Lords’ fault—you said they were likely to gambit a plan away from you, even in death, so who’s to say that it’s not an interdimensional game of cat-and-mouse?’
He considered that for a moment—plenty of former travelling companions knew how pompous and self-important the Time Lords as a whole were, and yet the author of this particular letter seemed very clued-in. Yeah… Romana was working her way up there. Possibly Tegan, for that matter… or Turlough, the little shit… no… too interpersonal to entirely be him given what they went through. Peri…? He still wasn’t entirely certain. River just seemed like too obvious a guess...
‘Just remember to work on your manners, to run fast, to be kind, and be the Doctor that you were always meant to be.’
By now he had found himself sitting on the couch, reclining lazily as he studied the words before him. He plucked an apple from the fruit bowl sitting on a nearby table and munched it. Usually he was much more precise than this, knowing exactly what was going on from the moment he began reading. Then again, there was something nagging at the back of his brain, tickling all levels of his conscious thought at once.
What was it about this letter that was so… so… impossible…?
“There you are,” Nardole scolded. The Doctor moved only his eyes in order to glare at the cyborg on the other side of the sitting area, who was coming at him with all the offense and nerve of a rural housewife. “I’ve been wondering where you’ve been.”
“Just wandering, nothing more,” he defended idly, attempting to go back to the letter.
“You aren’t thinking about leaving, are you?”
“How can I with you breathing down my neck?”
“Think you can pull a fast one on me?”
“I know I can choose a fast one on you, so don’t tempt me,” the Doctor said. He tried extra-hard to stare at the letter now, only for it to be ripped from his hands by Nardole.
“Who wrote this?” he frowned. “I know it wasn’t your wife.”
“Will you please stop?!” The Doctor grabbed the paper back and shoved it in the book, holding the entire thing in the crook of his arm. “I’m a widow, alright? And widows don’t need to have their intergalactic egg-secretary to remind them of that fact! Now if you find me sulking, then let me sulk in peace!”
“...sure it’s not just a touch of the times?”
“Sod off.”
After having dipped his toes in the strongest language he had used within the last decade, the Doctor stormed out of the room and found the place that Nardole was unable to find. Few others than him knew where it was, as it were, and he knew it was a sanctuary when it was needed most. He flopped down on the bed and looked at the letter again, using the wan light from the sidetable to look at the impossible—yet so familiar—words etched across the page.
Examining the letter, tears began to well in the Time Lord’s eyes as he laid there, reading the words over and over and over again. He had most recently spent his days with River, that had been true, but she wasn’t the one he was mourning… heck, he was her widow the day they met...
...it was whomever it was that wrote the letter… and the thought that he could not remember them or who they were or where they had been sliced through his hearts swiftly, firmly, rendering his two organs into four.
That was it, he decided. It was time to investigate the mysterious author and all their intentions. Soon as he was free from his duty, he would look, and there was nothing that was going to stop him.

Rose’s eyes fluttered open as the light from her bedroom window blanketed over her. Whatever criticism could be made about Gallifrey, the view from her bed was not one of them.
The Citadel was nestled between the mountains of Solace and Solitude. The Doctor and Rose’s suite of rooms faced the snow-capped top of Solitude - the very same mountain where the Doctor had lived and played as a boy. He’d had dirty blond hair back then, but was just as mischievous as the man he’d grow into. It was a sight she never dreamed to see when she’d first met him, and so she kept it close to her heart for when it was gone.
She stretched and the sheets dropped below her chest. The masculine groan at her side had her rolling over. “Doctor! You’re never still here when I wake up.”
“What can I say? You wore me out last night. Besides, I was enjoying the view when I woke, though I admit I’m enjoying it even more now.” His gaze dropped to his wife’s breast.
Rose rolled her eyes, and cuddled into the Doctor’s chest. “Git.”
He smiled and wrapped his arms around her letting his fingers lightly play along her spine.
They both spent the moment lost in thought. Rose staring at the view of the mountain and thinking of her other Doctors; the Doctor staring at the top of Rose’s head also thinking of her future with him. He rested his cheek on her crown and asked, “How long were you separated from me?”
“What?” Rose looked up at him. “Why’s it matter?”
“I suppose it doesn’t. Not really. I was just curious.” He shrugged it off and went back to caressing her hip.
Rose turned to fully face him and raised her eyebrow.
He sighed. “It’s just sometimes you get this look and I can tell you’re thinking about…him.”
“You’re jealous? Of yourself?”
“No! Well, maybe. Just a bit. ”
“You’re unbelievable. No, I don’t know why I’m surprised.” Rose snickered. “You are exactly the same man.”
“I-”
She sat up and poked his chest. “No. Listen here, Doctor. I am yours. Yours. This you that I married, the first you that I met and fell in love with, the following you that I hope to one day return to, and-”
“Wait. Are you saying that you’ve known more than one of my future incarnations?”
Rose’s jaw dropped. “Yeah. Couldn’t you tell?” Rose tapped her temple.
“No. You’ve done an excellent job of shielding your past and my future. Not that I would look, even if you hadn’t.”
“Oh. I didn’t even realize…” Rose bit her lip and then tried to contain her smile as she raised her eyes to him. “Since we’re on the subject, let me tell you that springing regeneration on me while it’s happening without really explaining is not the best way to go about things.”
“Rose, I…I what?”
Rose grasped his hand. “Doctor, I love you.”
He squeezed back. “I love you too.”
“I know you do, but I need to say this. I love you. All of you. The ones I’ve known, the ones I’ve never known, and the ones I hope to know in the future. I didn’t have my first Doctor for very long, maybe about eight months and most of that was spent dancing around our feelings. Then my next Doctor...we had only a year before we were separated, and while we were more of a proper couple, there was still so much left unsaid. And to answer your earlier question, we were separated about 3 years before I found this you. That more time apart than we had together. I barely had any time with your future selves and I don’t want to feel guilty for cherishing that time with you.”
“Oh, Rose…”
“Every little moment we had was my foundation for this. What we have right now. And I need you to be okay with that.”
“Of course I am. And I’m so sorry for making you feel otherwise. My only excuse is that I’m a complete and utter git. Honestly, I’m humbled by the love you have, have had, and will have for any and all of my future selves. I promise to try harder not to be a jealous old sod.”
Rose flung herself into his arms. “Thank you.”
“No, thank you. Thank you for loving me and not giving up on me.”
“You better get used to it, ‘cos you’re stuck with me. Never gonna leave you.”
The Doctor pulled back from their embrace. “I’m going to hold you to that.”
Rose wrapped her hand around the back of his neck and pulled him into a brillant snog.
An incessant knocking at their door finally had them pulling apart.
The Doctor pulled Rose back to him and kissed along her neck. “Ignore it, darling.”
Rose angled her head back to give him more room. “What if it’s important?”
“Whoever it is will come back.” The Doctor reached a particularly sensitive spot that had Rose shivering.
“Mmm.” The knocking only increased in force and volume. “Sounds important.”
The Doctor sighed and stopped kissing his wife. “Can’t a man spend one leisurely morning in bed with his bondmate?”
Rose giggled as he stood - getting a nice eyeful of his bum - and pulled on his dressing gown. There was no hiding what they’d been up to last night and this morning. His hair was a mess, his lips looked well kissed, and there were a few bruises peppered along his neck and chest.
“Go answer the door, and I’ll meet you out there in a mo’.”
The Doctor leaned over to kiss Rose before striding out of the bedroom to answer the urgent knocking.
He pushed the button that would open the door with more force than was necessary.
“Leela! What are you doing here?”
The Doctor’s former companion stood leaning against the doorframe with a small smile upon her face.
“Hello, Doctor.”
The Doctor pulled her into an embrace and then dragged her into the room.
“My friend, how are you?”
“This is not a social call, Doctor.”
“Oh?”
“Romana sent me. The council voted to resurrect the Master this morning.”
“What?”
“They felt he has certain...qualities that would be beneficial to them in the fight against the Daleks.”
“They’re idiots.”
“They’re desperate.”
“He’s completely self serving. If they think he’d be a loyal soldier…”
Rose sidled up behind the Doctor and wrapped her arms around his waist.
“Who’s your friend, Doctor?”
The Doctor turned and smiled. “Darling, this is Leela. She was my companion in my fourth body. Also human.”
“Oh! Another human on Gallifrey?”
“Leela, my wife, Rose.”
Leela held out her hand for Rose to shake. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Rose. I’ve heard much about you and have been looking forward to meeting you.”
She took it easily. “You too.” Rose turned to the Doctor. “What was all that about no humans on Gallifrey before we bonded?”
The Doctor ran his hands through his curls. “Ah, well generally that’s the case, but Leela is married to a Time Lord and as such has the same privileges as you.”
Rose faced Leela with a brilliant grin. “I hope we can be friends. It’ll be so nice to have another human to talk to.”
Leela was taken aback for a moment by the intensity of Rose’s smile, but found herself nodding. “It will be nice. It’s not always easy being an outsider among the Time Lords. Not that I let them push me around.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything else from someone the Doctor used to travel with. Told me once he only takes the best. That’s us.” Rose winked at her new friend, who caught a glance of the besotted expression on the Doctor’s face and laughed heartily.
“I think I’m going to like you very much, Rose.”
The Doctor mumbled, “I’m glad you’re going to like it, I have a feeling this will be very bad for me.”
Rose hugged his arm. “Hush you, I can’t wait to hear all her stories about your younger self.”
“That’s exactly what I mean, Rose!”
Leela looked between the two with a smirk. “Maybe we could get together later in the week for dinner. I’ll bring Andred.”
“Andred?”
“My husband.”
“Oh, wonderful.” Rose clapped her hands.
The Doctor played with the tie of his dressing gown. “Right, well, erm, when are they going through with it? Bringing the Master back?”
“In a few hours.”
“So soon?”
“Rassilon’s adamant for this to happen as soon as possible.”
“Is there the full support of the Council?”
“Well, no. There are a few that have reservations, many of whom are still upset over your accusations of leaks during your last two assignments.”
The Doctor rubbed at his temples. “Thank you, Leela, for letting me know. Tell Romana I’ll be dropping by this afternoon.”
Leela nodded and swiftly left the room. Rose rubbed the Doctor’s back. “Who’s the Master?”
The Doctor glanced at Rose in surprise. “Well, at least I know he won’t plague my future.”
Rose’s eyes widened at the slip.
“It’s all right, my dear. He may not be in my far future, but he’ll be plenty of trouble in our near future. The Master is…” The Doctor rubbed his chin. “How do I describe him?”
“Time Lord, I’m guessing?”
“Yes. Of the same age. Went to school together. Friends even. Or I thought we were, but he went mad. Or maybe he always was. Tried everything in his power to destroy me or those that mattered to me. I hadn’t seen him for ages after I left Gallifrey with the TARDIS, but he caught up with me on Earth when I was exiled there in my third body.”
Rose gasped. “Exiled?”
“I’ve never told you any of this?”
“You don’t talk much of the past. I’ve learned what little I do know because every once in a while you say something and I listen, but really, when I think of it, all I have of your past are a collection of crumbs.”
The Doctor clasped Rose’s hand. “I’m sorry.”
“No, I know it’s painful for you to…”
“Not all of my past is painful. There were wondrous and beautiful moments. As my wife, I want you to know all of me, and I’ll endeavor to do more on that score.”
Rose squeezed his hand. “And you won’t mind? I mean future you?”
“Rose, if I am, as you say, ‘the same man,’ then I can tell you nothing would please me more. I am often so lonely, even among friends, because I feel that I’m not understood. I’ve never quite fit in here. To have someone, a bondmate, that loves and accepts me for all that I am and can share that with me...well, it’s my most secret desire. So, no. I don’t think I’ll be upset if you’re that person, because I honestly can’t imagine anything I’d want more.”
“Oh, Doctor.” Rose threw herself into the Doctor’s arms and buried her head in the crook of his neck. “There’s nothing I want more than that as well.”
“I’m glad we’re in accord. Now, my darling wife, as much as it pains me to say, I think we should get ready and go find Romana. See if there is anything we can do to stop this.”
Rose kissed his cheek and nodded. “And you can tell me all about this Master bloke on the way.”
“Deal.”
--
The Doctor and Rose entered the Council chambers and were promptly surrounded by other Time Lords.
An older gentleman Rose had never seen before spoke first. “Doctor, did you hear about Narvin’s plan to resurrect the Master?”
The Doctor’s eyes widened. “Narvin’s behind it?”
The old man inclined his head and pronounced, “He’s in the matrix room now. It is probably already too late.”
A Time Lord that Rose recognized from her interview with Rassilon drew their attention.  “Doctor, it seems strange that Rassilon would instruct that the Master be brought back.” Rose thought he might have been from the Doctor’s House, Lungbarrow, and slated him as ally.
A Time Lady with shrewd eyes considered them both. “Yes, gravely suspect given your accusations regarding your past few assignments and your history with him.”
The Doctor’s cousin glanced back and forth between the Doctor and the Time Lady, not quite knowing what to make of the accusatory tone to the seemingly obvious statement. He was quick to assure though. “Your claims only strengthen with this development.”
A Time Lord that Rose immediately caused hairs to rise on the back of Rose’s neck sneered at the group. “Don’t be ridiculous. The Doctor’s...colorful past had no influence on this decision. It is for the benefit of Gallifrey.”
Before Rose could open her mouth, the Doctor spoke her thoughts out loud. “How could Gallifrey benefit from a madman being brought back?”
“He’s a skilled warrior. And yes, I admit his previous behavior could be somewhat troubling, but he is cunning and savage and if that is what we need to beat the Daleks, then so be it. For the good of Gallifrey!” The man cheered. Several others in the room picked it up with gusto, others half-heartedly, and the ones that Rose could now determine to be friends of the Doctor remained silent and thoughtful.
The Doctor snorted and crossed his arms. “He would sell out his own mother if it was to further his own purposes. You’re fools to think he would serve Gallifrey, when if at any point betraying the Time Lords to the enemy benefited him, he wouldn’t hesitate.”
Rose was trying to memorize the faces of those who seemed to be antagonistic to her husband when Romana joined the group.
“Romana, you have stories to tell of the Master’s treachery.”
“You know very well, all of these people are well acquainted with the Master and his past. I’m afraid very little I say would cause anyone to change their minds on the matter. And regardless, it’s too late. He’s back and gifted with a full cycle of regenerations.”
“They wouldn’t!”
“The would and they did.”
“What’s Narvin thinking?”
“Oh, that wasn’t Narvin’s doing. That was actually voted on by the High Council-”
“What?”
“-which you would know if you ever deigned to attend a Chamber session. They felt that with the War on, he would go through them faster than normal.”
“That’s a mistake. He can’t be trusted!”
“He is our best hope!”
Rose took a step back from the squabbling and backed into her brother-in-law.
“Brax!”
He places his fingers on his lips and led her away from the small, but loud group. In a low voice he explained, “They’ve found another prophecy. Luckily this one in no way points to you or the Doctor. It mentions an old Time Lord legend, so that will take some of the doubt away from those that still suspect you. I’m afraid not all, but enough to let the two of you breathe a little easier.”
“Thanks.”
The Doctor walked up behind them and wrapped an arm around Rose. “What’s this about being able to breathe easier?”
Rose turned to him. “They found another prophecy and it doesn’t implicate either of us.”
“Thank the stars. What’s it say?”
“It mentions the Hybrid.”
“The Hybrid?”
Brax nodded. “It says, ‘On the last day of the Time War, walking through the ashes of the Time Lords, the Hybrid will stand over the ruins of Gallifrey and unravel the Web of Time, breaking a billion billion hearts to heal its own.’”
“But that’s an old Matrix prophecy. It’s been around for ages.”
“The second half of it was an old Matrix prophecy, but they found a completed scroll in the Cloisters that ties it specifically to the Time War. Luckily for you two that fact has diverted attention away from the both of you. Rassilon’s assigned a small group to scour the Cloisters and the Matrix to discover any little bit of information about the Hybrid and who or what it is. There’ve always been whispers about it being a Dalek, perhaps the Emperor, since they’re both known enemies and hybrid creatures.”
The Doctor scoffed. “As if Daleks have hearts to mend.”
Brax smiled. “Yes, well, it’s of benefit to you to keep our focus trained in that direction anyway, yes?”
The Doctor sheepishly ran his hand through his hair. “Right.”
Brax clicked his heels together and jauntily saluted Rose. “Well, I’m off. I’m going to see if anything in my collection provides clues to this newest mystery.” He pointed at the Doctor. “Behave yourself, brother.”
“Oi!”
Rose patted his chest. “He never does.”
Brax winked at Rose. “Still, I have hope he might listen one day.”
After waving Braxiatel off, the Doctor turned Rose in his embrace. “Well, there’s nothing for it. With the Master back it’s best if we try and stay out of the Capital as much as possible. Let’s find out what the Time Lords wish for us to do next.”
--
The Doctor and Rose were in their suite preparing for a trip to Marinus. “So Marinus? Anything you tell me about it? What to expect?”
The Doctor was digging through his various chests of bits and bobs or as Rose referred to it, ‘junk,’ for anything that might be useful on their latest assignment. Every so often, he’d shove something in his pockets. “Oh, hmm...was there once in my first body.”
“Was this when you traveled with your granddaughter?”
The Doctor smiled at the memory. “Yes. Susan. You know about her?”
“You mentioned her once after…” She laughed. “After dropping the bombshell on me that you’d- that you were a dad.” She gave him a crooked smile. “I was insanely jealous, but trying to hide it. I mean we were...dating isn’t really the right word, but…” She shrugged. “For all intents and purposes, we were. Considered us a proper couple anyway. You’d never mentioned a wife or family…” Rose’s eyes went wide. “Wait. If you’ve already got a wife... But-”
The Doctor dropped what he was doing and rushed over to her. “The only wife I’ve got right now is you. My first wife, and honestly she was never what you are to me, passed into the Matrix a long time ago.”
Rose’s brow furrowed.
“It’s where Time Lords go when we’ve gone past our last regeneration. We upload a part of ourselves into the Matrix so that our sum of knowledge can be accessed for the benefit of future generations. It was never a love match. Though I tried…” The Doctor shook off the memories. “We were determined to have the most compatible TNA and produced two children via the looms. That’s all she was interested in. She was a proper Time Lady and never really could understand why I couldn’t be. Even my children, who are still knocking about, don’t like to have much to do with me. I embarrass them.”
Rose hugged the Doctor. “You don’t embarrass me. I think you’re the most wonderful man I’ve ever met.”
The Doctor clutched her tighter. “Thank you for that.”
When they pulled apart, Rose was looking out the window and chewing her lip.
“What is it, darling?”
“Oh…” She met the Doctor’s concerned eyes. “I just never considered that your children are adult Time Lords and out there somewhere.”
“Does that bother you?”
“No. I...I was just wondering if I might meet them.”
“I’m not sure that’s a good idea. They don’t particularly like me and I’d hate for them to take their dislike out on you.”
“Would it be any better for me to run into them somewhere with them knowing who I am, but me in the dark about it? Because let’s face it, all the Time Lords know who and what I am.”
“You’re right of course.” The Doctor sighed. “I’ll introduce you when next we’re back.”
Rose wrapped her arms around the Doctor’s neck and kissed him.
They broke apart and the Doctor looked over his shoulder and at his collection of mechanical parts. “Let’s finish packing. I’ve an idea to help the Voord.”
Rose grinned fondly at her clever husband. “Of course you do.”
--
After Marinus, the Doctor and Rose spent the next many decades fighting the Dalek’s and their allies across the galaxy. They battled the Nightmare Child, took on an Army of Meanwhiles and Neverweres, eliminated the Skaro Degradations, and in all of this did their best to prevent the Time Lords from breaking the laws of time in their efforts to win the war. They fought Technomancers and tried to prevent the return of the Great Vampires. They traveled through time to stop a plan by the Daleks to wipe out the children of Gallifrey. They became beloved to the average gallifreyans, but their sense of morality and justice caused them only trouble with the Time Lords. One by one, Rassilon called for the use of the weapons contained within the Omega Arsenal. More often than not, the Doctor and Rose stepped in to undo the damage to the fabric of time that those weapons caused or would have caused. The met many people in their travels, and equally lost many friends to the war. They gained names in both fear and respect across the cosmos, but they never stopped being the Doctor and Rose Tyler.

FAQ
Tumblr media
(thank you @heimeldat for the banner!)
What is this?
A prompt week celebrating the pairing Doctor/Romana from the Doctor Who universe by creating and sharing themed fanworks!
When is it?
Official posting days will be April 8-14, 2024. Prompts will be released well before then so you have time to prepare if you want, and if you miss the official week, go ahead and post anyway - I'll reblog late fanworks for the rest of April.
What fanworks are allowed?
Anything! That means fic, art, graphics, vids, meta, crafts, fanmixes, reclists, and anything else you can think of. And obviously they should prominently feature Doctor/Romana as a ship :)
If you submit a reclist (list of recommendations of other people's fannish creations that fit the day's prompt), please add at least a short description of why you're recommending each work.
Please submit new fanworks, broadly construed; a new entry in an ongoing fic series, a finished version of a fanmix you've previously shared an early draft of, or a reclist containing a couple of works you've recced before would be fine, but just submitting a work you've already made and posted some time ago doesn't really fit the spirit of a prompt week. I won't be policing this, though.
How do I submit a work?
Post it, or a link to it, here on Tumblr and tag it #doctor/romana prompt week. I will be tracking that tag and will reblog all works in it to this blog.
What are the rules about NSFW and potentially triggering content?
You have control over what you choose to create, but we do ask that you include a warning if your fanwork contains material that is Not Safe for Work or fits any of AO3's archive warnings (graphic depictions of violence, major character death, rape/non-con, underage sex; or if you choose not to warn). Examples of how you could include this warning would be by tagging your Tumblr post #nsfw (or another relevant warning tag), by copying an AO3 header that includes a warnings section, or by creating your own header with a warnings section.
If your fanwork is hosted on Tumblr (rather than the Tumblr post just linking to it), please put any material that is NSFW or fits any of AO3's archive warnings under a cut.
For potentially triggering material that does not fit one of these categories, please use your best judgment to offer appropriate tags and warnings. As you browse the prompt week blog, please bear in mind that you may encounter material that you find upsetting or do not wish to see, and please use your own precautions and judgment.
Is there an AO3 collection?
Yes, if you want to post your works to AO3 you can post them to this collection! The collection will open shortly before the prompt week begins However, you are also free to host them anywhere else or directly on Tumblr. The prompt week is based on Tumblr.
Do I have to participate every day?
By no means! You are welcome to participate as many or as few days as you like. However, there will be celebratory graphics for completists who post something every day!
So what are the prompts?
Glad you asked! Here is a link to the post with this year's prompts.
Wait, who are you anyway?
I (Mod Aurelia) am usually to be found @lurking-latinist. If you would like to help out with the prompt week in some way, send me a message there!
I have another question.
Drop us an ask!

Fandom Tag Meme
I was tagged by the wonderful @tardisly, and then I wrote my answers to several of these on a lunch break, but ran out of time, so I saved it as a draft and only just discovered that I never finished it! Same thing happened to a bit of dinner I had to reheat in the microwave the other day, because I got distracted reading an article while I was waiting. I have really embraced the absentminded professor stereotype lately. ANYWAY.
1. Your current OTP(s)/OT3(s)/OTX(s):
Shipping’s not my main fandom thing, but I’m definitely a Doctor/River shipper. I know it’s flawed and cheesy, but it just works for me. River and the Doctor are mad enough, and alike enough, and different enough for each other, and their weird timey-wimey relationship suits them perfectly. They feel balanced as a couple.
2. A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind (bonus points: who was that person).
I mean, Twelve/Clara sort of? I still really see them as a BroTP and don’t ship them myself, but I can at least see where the romantic shippers are coming from.
Also Five/Nyssa or Eight/Nyssa. Again, I don’t actually ship them in the sense of wanting stories where they’re a couple, but after listening to some of Nyssa’s BFAs and talking with @whovianhermit about people who’d actually make a good romantic partnership with the Doctor (as opposed to being exciting, fun, or adorable, but not necessarily healthy), I really think Nyssa is one of the few people in the universe who’d work. Except I can’t really see her giving up her own lifesaving work, or wanting to make a life in the TARDIS. So it’s definitely going to be a LDR, but really--what long-term relationship with the Doctor could ever not be a LDR?
3. A pairing you used to love, but it all fell apart for you.
LOL I feel like @tardisly and I are answering a lot of these shippy questions the same. Ten/Rose in principle is a good ship, though not one that I could imagine lasting even Rose’s entire remaining lifespan, let alone the Doctor’s. And that’s not a criticism of their relationship, because I really believe that some genuinely good relationships aren’t meant to last “forever.” Like, I sort of see them as a kind of college romance? A good relationship that runs its natural course and they both move on, forever changed for the better by the time they spent together, and forever holding a special place in each other’s hearts, but both OK with having moved on. But ten years on, I’m just kind of bored with it all now. HOWEVER, David and Billie are doing a Big Finish box set, so we’ll see if they can rekindle my excitement for the Ten/Rose ship at all.
4. Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what?
Probably the Trees of Rassilon headcannon that @theenigmaofriversong and I sort of riffed on each other about.
5. What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
Well, I joined rec.arts.drwho in the early 90s, though spent some years later on being a Whovian but not so much in fandom. But there’s no fandom that I’ve spent more time in than this one. I am constant in my affections.
6. Do you remember your first OTP, if so who was in it?
Probably Mulder/Scully. I can’t remember one before them.
7. Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over Tumblr.
Parks and Recreation
8. Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves (chars you’re neutral on are fair game, as are chars you dislike).
The Sixth Doctor is way better in the audios than I remember him being from the classic series--much more thoughtful and a bit less abrasive. Also his flirting with River is adorable.
9. Name three things you wish you saw more of in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
Eight, Liv, Helen fanfic & fan art
Enthusiasm for and content about Classic Who and Big Finish
More well-informed criticism and meta of all eras; less ridiculous hatred dressed up as legitimate criticism based on bad analysis of certain characters and showrunners.
10. Choose a song at random; which ship or character does it remind you of?
“Cosmic Love” by Florence + the Machine; Doctor/River
11. A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships.
This would be extremely unlikely to happen, since I pretty much don’t bother with ships that aren’t canon or at least heavily implied.
12. Your most scandalous headcanon for your current OTP(s)/OT3(s)/OTX(s).
River never picks up her socks, and it drives the Doctor nuts when they’re living together for 24 years. Eventually in a fit of rage he gathers all the dirty socks up and instead of washing them and putting them away like usual, he chucks them in a black hole. It takes River a week to notice she doesn’t have any socks and another month to bother getting new socks. She doesn’t pick those ones up either.
I literally just made that up on the spot. I didn’t have any scandalous headcanons; this is the best I could do.
13. Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)?
The Doctor is varying degrees of asexual, depending on their incarnation. Some regenerations are demi, and some are sex-repulsed. Almost all the Doctor’s regenerations are panromantic, but a couple are aromantic.
14. 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms.
The Doctor (all of them), from Doctor Who
Samantha Carter, Stargate SG-1
Susan Ivanova, from Babylon 5
Tiffany Aching, Discworld
Rupert Giles, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
15. 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms.
Doctor/River, Doctor Who
Sam/Jack, Stargate SG-1
John/Delenn, Babylon 5
16. 5 brotps:
Twelve & Clara <3 <3 <3
Ten & Donna
Eight & Lucie
Leela & K-9
I strongly suspect that Benny and Warner!Doctor are becoming another...
17. Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go (prompts optional but encouraged).
I listened to “The Auntie Matter” this morning. It’s a Fourth Doctor and Romana I audio in the style of a PG Wodehouse comedy and it’s hilarious and perfect and just way way too short; why aren’t there more Wodehouse/Wilde-style Doctor Who stories??? And then in the commentary at the end, the cast and crew talked about how Mary Tamm fell ill shortly before they were to begin recording, but she insisted on doing the audios despite her illness, and although they completed that run, she died six months before the first of them was released. Tom Baker talked about losing Lis Sladen and Mary Tamm and Caroline John all in the space of about a year, and I was crying, remembering what it felt like at the time to lose these people I never knew but loved nonetheless, and thinking how much more keenly those who actually knew them must have felt their loss. But also what a privilege we have, that in a way they’re still with us, because of this amazing body of work.

Today's prompt is
Mismatches!
My idea here was to pair up regenerations other than the Fourth Doctor/Romana I and Fourth Doctor/Romana II pairings that exist on screen, but as always, you can take this in whatever direction you choose!
