so i accidentally bought a used copy of Human Nature last weekend and read it all on Tuesday. and the TV episodes are fresh in my mind too, so Immediate Reactions (spoiler warning):
fascinating that in book!HN, the Doctor decides to become human for the hell of it, for emotional reasons. I’d assumed that it would be revealed eventually that of course he was doing it to hide from the Family (erm, I forget their species name in the book), but no, the Family was the one who turned him human. I do think the TV version works better as a premise—and the Doctor not explaining much and giving limited instructions works better if he was genuinely in a rush, rather than it being a personal choice. but still. huh.
dear lord this book is much darker than the TV version. the whole school getting blown up and most of the students dying, the bullies literally killing Tim and him being brought back to life…..
the one thing I liked better in the book was how it explored the Doctor-as-an-Ideal more—how anyone can be the Doctor. John Smith didn’t have to change back to embrace what the Doctor stood for—he chose to be the sort of hero the Doctor was himself, while he was still human. Tim learned that he can say no to being a soldier and there are other ways to do good — and literally became a doctor.
I am fascinated by John Smith surviving briefly as a separate person from the Doctor. I liked it as a plot resolution—the villain trying to absorb the Doctor and instead being thwarted because he absorbed the mind of a human. weird that he then. dies(?) but there was something quite interesting there briefly, about humanity being his undoing. and the Doctor and John Smith getting to talk to each other. and it was definitely unexpected, given how nothing of the sort happens in TV!HN. (the mechanics of becoming human and the Doctor’s memories being stored separately also being different.)
yes I did read this because I knew Romana would be mentioned. I’d heard that seeing a vision of her was what led the Doctor to realize the threat the Family posed—which is true! but I’d assumed that this vision was before the adventure, that this vision sparked his plan to thwart the Family by hiding as a human. so I was emotionally unprepared for it being John Smith having the vision. he didn’t even remember her, but seeing Romana executed was what convinced him to resist, to not give the Family what they wanted. y’all I’m feeling things 🥺

For the Fanfic kiss meme, for @lurking-latinist - who asked for Seven/Romana + 20 (on a scar), but unfortunately while I am for the most part happy to go along with a bit of Doctor/Romana on demand, for some reason this is any Doctor/Romana except Five or Seven, who are NOTPS. (THis is totally illogical! idk. it just is.)
Have some Six/Romana, with thoughts of The Apocalypse Element in mind to make up for it, for the same prompt:
***
The story of what the Daleks had done to her was written on her hands.  Elsewhere, too, he imagined, his face darkening.  He did not let her withdraw his fingers from his.  He lowered his head and kissed them.
“Really, Doctor,” she said, her head leant a little to one side.  She’s still the same as ever to him, even if her voice has gained a wry, weathered tone, and her face a few lines from time as well as the Daleks.  “You seem to be getting terribly romantic in your old age.”
“Perhaps one of us has to.”
She gave a small smile.  “Oh, Doctor.  As if you don’t get tortured every other Wednesday.”
“That’s not the same!”
Romana turned his hand over and traced a finger across its tell tale marks: a burn here, a cut there.  “Isn’t it?”
“Not the every other Wednesday kind, no.  What you went through –”
“I’d rather you didn’t mention it.”  For one moment her hand quivered in his.  She raised her head.  “Better not, I think.  Don’t you?”
She kissed his palm.
“Oh?”  He arched an eyebrow.  “Who’s being romantic now?”
She laughed.  “Well, it is good to see you again, Doctor.”
Send me a ship + a kiss here!

When people in some fandom start shipping the actors that play the characters in their favourite ships I like to imagine a weary Doctor/Romana shipper looking up from where they sit at the bar (because this scene takes place in a pub apparently) with a half-empty drink and they cough to attract attention and then they look them straight in the eye, with scary intensity, and say "Look, I know that *sounds* like a good idea right now, but..."

Rogue of Time analysis?
The Rogue of Time [symbols: domino mask, gear]
The Rogue class is based on Robin Hood.
The Time aspect’s main themes are endings and destruction. You can find its official description here.
A Rogue of Time is among those who use physical existence. This is the “classpect group” they belong to. Members include: the Knight, Page, Thief, and Rogue of Space/Time. These classes are all opposites or inverses of each other that use the Space/Time dichotomy (physical existence). A description of classpect groupings can be found here.
The Rogue of Time passively steals the Time aspect. Passive classes are guided by others or act for the benefit of others. They are more likely to be kind, but less likely to stand up for themselves. Thieves and Rogues steal their aspect and everything it symbolizes to grant it to someone else. Simplified, the Rogue of Time is motivated by others to steal endings and destruction.
In personality, the Rogue of Time lacks self control and has a strong desire for closure. Personality descriptions can be found here.
Their archetype is the Free Spirit Harbinger, defined by reckless endings and destruction. Archetypes are explained here.
Their opposite is the Thief of Space, who actively steals creation and beginnings.
Their inverse is the Knight of Space, who actively utilizes creation and beginnings.
A classpect or “god tier” is an individual’s best self. All classpects go through a journey from unrealized, to struggle, to realized. When a character is unrealized, they neutrally exist as their inverse. On their struggle, they will wildly flip back and forth between their inverse and true classpect. In their worst moments they will act as their inverse, in their best their true classpect. When realized, they will stabilize as their true classpect. They will still have room to grow, but will become happier, more successful people.
This means that the Rogue of Time begins life motivated by themselves to utilize creation and beginnings. When their struggle arrives and they are at their worst, they will continue this behavior in negative extremes. However, when at their best, they will find purpose in instead stealing endings and destruction for others. When realized, they will stabilize and continue to steal the Time aspect passively, in a positive way.
They share their archetype with the Witch of Heart, the Harbinger Free Spirit.
The Rogue of Time would quest on a planet similar to the Land of Cubes [Rogue] and Time [Aspect]. An example would be the Land of Parcels and Ticking. An explanation of planet naming conventions can be found here.
Two possible gods, or denizens, to reign over their planet would be Chronos (God of Time) or Hephaestus (God of the Forge). Other Time aspect denizens can be found here.
When the Rogue of Time completes their planet quests and dies on their quest bed, they would rise to ascension on the wings of crows (symbols of death). A list of soul animals can be found here.
The characters that I have currently classpected as Rogues of Time are: the Tenth Doctor from Doctor Who, Romana II from Doctor Who, Mulan from Once Upon a Time, Tracer from Overwatch, Quicksilver from X-Men, and Ke$ha from Ke$hastuck.
If any of the links not connected to my blog break, the content can be found on my Google Drive.

FAQ
Tumblr media
(thank you @heimeldat for the banner!)
What is this?
A prompt week celebrating the pairing Doctor/Romana from the Doctor Who universe by creating and sharing themed fanworks!
When is it?
Official posting days will be April 8-14, 2024. Prompts will be released well before then so you have time to prepare if you want, and if you miss the official week, go ahead and post anyway - I'll reblog late fanworks for the rest of April.
What fanworks are allowed?
Anything! That means fic, art, graphics, vids, meta, crafts, fanmixes, reclists, and anything else you can think of. And obviously they should prominently feature Doctor/Romana as a ship :)
If you submit a reclist (list of recommendations of other people's fannish creations that fit the day's prompt), please add at least a short description of why you're recommending each work.
Please submit new fanworks, broadly construed; a new entry in an ongoing fic series, a finished version of a fanmix you've previously shared an early draft of, or a reclist containing a couple of works you've recced before would be fine, but just submitting a work you've already made and posted some time ago doesn't really fit the spirit of a prompt week. I won't be policing this, though.
How do I submit a work?
Post it, or a link to it, here on Tumblr and tag it #doctor/romana prompt week. I will be tracking that tag and will reblog all works in it to this blog.
What are the rules about NSFW and potentially triggering content?
You have control over what you choose to create, but we do ask that you include a warning if your fanwork contains material that is Not Safe for Work or fits any of AO3's archive warnings (graphic depictions of violence, major character death, rape/non-con, underage sex; or if you choose not to warn). Examples of how you could include this warning would be by tagging your Tumblr post #nsfw (or another relevant warning tag), by copying an AO3 header that includes a warnings section, or by creating your own header with a warnings section.
If your fanwork is hosted on Tumblr (rather than the Tumblr post just linking to it), please put any material that is NSFW or fits any of AO3's archive warnings under a cut.
For potentially triggering material that does not fit one of these categories, please use your best judgment to offer appropriate tags and warnings. As you browse the prompt week blog, please bear in mind that you may encounter material that you find upsetting or do not wish to see, and please use your own precautions and judgment.
Is there an AO3 collection?
Yes, if you want to post your works to AO3 you can post them to this collection! The collection will open shortly before the prompt week begins However, you are also free to host them anywhere else or directly on Tumblr. The prompt week is based on Tumblr.
Do I have to participate every day?
By no means! You are welcome to participate as many or as few days as you like. However, there will be celebratory graphics for completists who post something every day!
So what are the prompts?
Glad you asked! Here is a link to the post with this year's prompts.
Wait, who are you anyway?
I (Mod Aurelia) am usually to be found @lurking-latinist. If you would like to help out with the prompt week in some way, send me a message there!
I have another question.
Drop us an ask!

Another nonsense prompt:
Romana, drunk on ginger beer: Please explain to me why?
Rose, equally drunk of hypervodka: Why what?
Romana: -vague gestures at the Doctor-
Setting, Doctor, and Rose’s reasons are to your discretion based on whatever mood you’d like to create.
thinky, i loved loved loved writing this prompt (i'm really enjoying trying out romana's perspective lately!) and since the other ones you sent have been coming out angsty, i made sure to fluff this one up. i also chose twelve as my doctor, just to heighten how thoroughly cracky this situation is. i hope you enjoy it (in spite of it being unedited)!!
(click here to read on ao3.)
.✫*゚・゚。.★.*。・゚✫*.
Their bodies had ended up at sharp ninety-degree angles, through no fault of Romana's.
No, she laid all the blame squarely at the little human girl's doorstep. It was she who had withdrawn a bottle of hypervodka from one of her borrowed coats, out of a cheeky trans-dimensional pocket—as if any Time Lady worth her particulate wouldn't notice that kind of unsanctioned jiggery-pokery—and it was she who had suggested they go and search out some ginger beer to get them on equal footing. And in the end, it was she who was responsible for all those generous pours.
(On the other hand, it was Romana who had chosen to drink them, which did leave her shouldering a bit of blame. But only a little. The rest was all Rose.)
As she gazed up at the ceiling, Romana reflected on the nature of their situation as it now stood. Or rather, tilted.
The girl had been travelling with them for some time now. It had been a bit of cleverness in the basement of a London shop that brought her into the fold. (Only several hours prior, Romana herself had come aboard. In retrospect, she didn't know why she'd expected a little bit of a time to settle in again—it had been so long—before they took on anyone else, but she was rather miffed at the Doctor's speed and enthusiasm in inviting Rose along.) Yet Rose earned her keep in more than just the ordinary sense.
Though she was clever—and good in a crisis—she was also equipped to be a generally good travelling companion when they were not in danger. She was funny, and open, and very warm. Her nature tended towards unassuming compassion, she was a charmingly low-maintenance passenger, and it was clear she was utterly devoted to the Doctor, absurd as the concept seemed.
Really, that was the incongruity. The piece that Romana could not make sense of. Much as she’d come to care for him, the Doctor was brash, and absurd, and secretive. He was frequently rather self-involved and occasionally quite stupid.
He was, in every respect, the opposite of his lone human companion.
And yet…
The blurred ceiling overhead warped further as Romana turned her head to look at the girl, her hair crinkling, fanned out over the carpet of the media room. From above, they probably looked very silly, laying with their heads together on the floor, their legs kicked up against the back of the large sofa.
This had been Rose's doing as well: she'd been repeating with great enthusiasm something (she at least believed) she'd heard the Doctor say, something about circulation and higher brain function, and Romana didn't have the hearts to tell her that she wasn't sure about the human circulatory system, but it was certainly not how Gallifreyans operated. And when Rose insisted they try it—whatever it was—she'd gone along with it.
So, they'd kicked their legs up, and now they just sort of remained, wiggling their toes and giggling at nothing, waiting for their "heightened brain function" to begin.
All that seemed to be happening was Rose's cheeks going progressively pinker.
Meanwhile, the girl was chattering on about how the Doctor had promised to take her somewhere new, a place where dogs had no noses. Romana finally spoke up.
"Please explain to me… why?" she pronounced, with—she thought—impressive clarity.
Rose's ramble stopped mid-stream, and she tipped her head to the side. "Why… what? Why wouldn't they have noses?" She scrunched her own, which was sort of button-ish, not unlike Romana's. "I don't know. Hadn't thought about it, actually. Not sure I want to."
"No, not the—not the dogs, you silly girl," Romana laughed. (It was not a cackle; she did not cackle.) "I meant, why do you…?" She made a kind of vague gesture over the back of their heads, to where the Doctor was currently sound asleep—or possibly just unconscious—atop a pile of couch cushions, which had been commandeered from their much abused sofa.
His face was slack. It was highly probable he'd soon begin to drool, if he hadn't begun already.
Romana winced. "I mean, isn't he…? Well, that is…" Her faltering, intoxicated vocabulary made her huff in irritation. "Why do you… when he's so—?"
"Tall?" Rose finished. Romana was alarmed to see the girl's smile turn quite giddy, her glazed eyes taking on a dreamy, half-lidded quality. "He is, isn't he?"
"Well, I suppose."
"And he's got great hair. All those silvery curls…"
"Yes, well—!"
Rose's shoulders rolled, as if she meant to yawn and stretch and sink into a blissfully warm bath. She sighed contentedly. "I love him, I think."
"You do," Romana said. Her disbelief seemed like it must have been evident to anyone less totally inebriated.
But Rose didn't so much as bat an eyelash.
"Don't think, actually. I'm sure. Have been for a while. Is that stupid?"
"Probably," she answered honestly. "He's an idiot, Rose, a very clever idiot."
"And he's too old for me," Rose said, nodding her seeming agreement. "And he's a bit careless sometimes. About people… 'bout everything."
Romana frowned.
"But I think those times are when he needs us most. He was alone so long, before you and me." Rose turned her head, eyes briefly sharpening in wakeful attention. "You knew, didn't you?"
"Knew what?"
"How lonely he was. That's why you came back, isn't it?" Her tone was matter-of-fact, as if it was only obvious. But it wasn't obvious at all. Rose went on. "He lost his daughter… what was it, two—three hundred years ago? He's always vague with the details. But her name was Jenny. He lost her to another world, sounds like, and he's been alone ever since. Lifetimes on his own, just floating."
Rose gestured with her hand, floating tracing an arced path over them. Her pink, glittery nail varnish caught the light, flickering like nebulae viewed through a fractured telescope. It became clear to Romana that she was extremely drunk, and her vision was impaired.
But her reasoning was less fragmented.
Concern for the Doctor was not, in fact, why she'd come. There hadn't really been a "why." She'd been lonely, and rather bored, as Leela was off on a mission with Narvin that she probably wanted to know nothing about. BIut really, she'd just wanted to go. And so, she'd contrived a way to stumble upon him.
And in so doing, she'd stumbled the both of them right into the Autons, and the Nestene Consciousness, and a twenty-first century shopgirl with a strong moral compass. From there, the adventures, as always, seemed unending—fast-paced and almost predictable in their unpredictability. They skated through danger, always risking a burn or a scrape or a loss and always emerging on the other side, triumphant and weary, minds refreshingly emptied.
She'd been caught up in it all, she had to admit.
But somehow, Rose had found time in the madness to extract these insights. To see through the Doctor's bright and shiny façade. And to fall utterly in love.
It was so—Romana's brow furrowed, her lips pursed—it was so… human.
And despite herself, she laughed. (She did not cackle; she absolutely did not.) Shaking her head, she reached a hand out to pat Rose's arm.
"You dear thing," she chuckled. "You know you're entirely too good for him."
Rose flushed. Her head was beginning to take on a rather tomato-esque colouring. Romana decided it was probably best if they got up.
Behind them, the Doctor made a sound—half gasp, half snuffle. When Romana looked back, he was blinking owlishly at them, watching them rolling about and cautiously beginning the process of becoming vertical. It was rather slow going.
"Good morning, Doctor," she greeted. She spoke loudly, with an abundance of artificial cheer.
"I wasn't sleeping," he insisted in a husky tone. "Were you sleeping?" (His accent—Scottish, an affectation Romana did not quite understand the purpose of—seemed to have been enhanced by his little nap, and his hair was flattened on one side. But at least there was no sign of drool.)
Rose pushed up to her knees, and Romana could only watch in amusement as she crawled over to the Doctor, stretching out a hand to help him up. His eyes, when they met Rose's, came alive—a brilliant, reflective blue which seemed to contain an unfathomable depth of feeling.
She shook her head. There was nothing to be done now. If Rose was in love, at least the Doctor seemed equally (if not more) besotted with his resident human.
They would almost certainly break each other's hearts.
But if they didn't…
If they didn't, she believed they might very well be the stuff of legend.
