i do have backstories in the works for most of these characters as a 'default' verse. the asterisk means a character is a dragon rider in a fantasy verse. i can veer from developed backstories however seems fit though!

What I don't understand is the need to have made Percy know all of the myths. It's unnecessary. A familiarity makes sense, he studied it in school, and having Sally tell him stories is sweet, but that doesn't mean he can't be confused? In the books he mentions he struggles with some myths and names because his dyslexia makes it hard*, some names can be similar but are completely different figures. It's also mentioned that the more a demigod knows about the mythical world the easier they are to find. Percy's ignorance makes sense, and is important for his safety (hence why he's lied to by Brunner and Grover about Mrs Dodds). When comparing the wide breadth of myths covered in the books, not knowing exactly who someone is makes more sense than immediately knowing exactly who and what is going on.

A main theme in the books is that intelligence comes in many different forms, especially because the protagonists are both neurodiverse in more than one way. Being book smart isn't the end all be all of intelligence and both Annabeth and Percy show how clever they are in different ways. Book Percy was never made to seem stupid because he didn't immediately know about the Lotus hotel or Procrustes for example. Even Annabeth was fooled by them. That's how the myths worked in the pjo verse, they're modernised and there's the mist it's perfectly fine for them to be tricked. Hell, in universe the monsters want them to be tricked, that's the point. Percy's intelligence and quick thinking are shown not via immediate fact retrieval, but through how he manages to manipulate the situation for the better. He's perceptive, and is good at figuring things out**. He's still incredibly intelligent, it's just shown in a different way.

One of the joys of the original series was learning about the myths alongside Percy. The mystery and the unique modernisations of the stories. So it's a bit of a slap in the face to have the show's narration behave like everyone would know what any myth, that it's so obvious they don't need to explain how or why the protagonists know exactly what's coming before it has a chance to. Again: I'm aware that Annabeth has been at camp for years, but there's a massive amount of myths to know and they have adapted to the modern day. They might not be immediately recognisable, or the mist might be too strong etc etc. Not knowing something doesn't mean you're dumb.

The show, however, doesn't give the kids chances to mess up. They know everything immediately, or far too quickly. There's no room for learning or acknowledging the complexities of the pjo-universe. Them recognising Medusa straight away, fine, she's a pretty well known myth, and Percy is named for Perseus, the familiarity makes sense. The lotus hotel, less so, it's not that well known of an aspect of the Odyssey, but they are looking for a god so being suspicious of their surroundings is fair enough I guess? (Though coincidences can be coincidences. The only similarity that the island and the hotel have is a lotus, a very common flower?) There are so many things that happen in the Odyssey that not specifically remembering this tale would've been fine. But Procrustes? Immediately? Really?

What purpose does it serve to have the kids know who they're facing straight away? To the plot. Considering that the myths are intertwined with the modern, it would make sense for them not to know things, or at least not immediately recognise them as monstrous/magical, because not everything is?

I don't know, I just feel like taking the opportunity to learn away from both the audience and the characters cheapens the story and makes it less interesting. (Representations of intelligence aside. Because if I talk about that I'm going to call someone Ableist and I don't want to get into that right now. I will say though that even the movie had more overt dyslexia and adhd rep so...)

Not only that, but narratively, it's not working. There are no stakes to the situations the kids get into, or there are but certainly not to the same degree. It's just. Odd.

All that to say that the decision is a weird one and one that doesn't serve the plot to boot. That is all.

• I’ve been roleplaying since what feels like forever. I started super young one summer before school started up, and I’ve been on-and-off ever since. I began in roleplay groups roleplaying Harry Potter, then got really into The Vampire Diaries-verse, and have also enjoyed Percy Jackson, supernatural town, royal rpgs, and a bunch I’ve popped into over the years.

• I do come from a land down under *cue the flute*. So AEST timezone, but my schedule is alll over a lot of the time.

• I’m looking to rp over discord. Fair warning, I am still getting the hang of rping on there and I have no idea how to do real fancy stuff but I’m a quick learner so we’ll be fine. I still feel like it was yesterday when I dragged my feet big time transferring from roleplaying on facebook to tumblr. Ah, time flies.

• I’m a very easy going person! Your length, I’ll match. Your ideas? I’ll pretty much lap up everything. Hate fandom rp? Cool not an issue at all! Hate oc rps and prefer fandom? Wicked! If I don’t know the lore well, I’ll wing it! Struggling to get a reply out? No stress! I’m well passed putting so much pressure onto things that they feel like a chore. I’d love to chat about our ships and discuss fc’s and get excited and really have some fun!

• I play mostly female muses! I know, I’m so terribly cliche, but I am pretty meh with male muses. Although, it’s been a long time since I’ve given it a go and I’m always happy to compromise! Very much wanting sapphic plots too!!

I WOULD RISK IT ALL FOR THESE PLOTS:

1) Based on a fave book series of mine, but honestly does not need to have any relation to it and can be adapted to any ideas. Basically, girl runs away from home in her mid teens, meets guy around her age who takes her in with him and his guardian who have some secrets, turns out they’re *some type of supernatural creature idk can be whatever we like*. Turns out she has some illness that he can’t cure alone and he has to agree to hand her over to his enemies so that they can cure her, but it also will wipe her memories and she will forget her life before. Fast forward a few years, he’s never stopped protecting her but he’s never gotten close because he can’t bear it. She just happens to go with her friends to the club he now owns. Drama ensues.

2) ““oh, can we take it nice && slow?” two strangers who meet every weekend at a club. nothing but first names are shared. they use each other to relieve the stress of their weeks. hot && heavy dancing. making out on the dance floor. on occasion hookups in the corner of the club. but the moment they leave the club, it’s as if they don’t exist. their chemistry is electric, but there unspoken complications in their lives that they just understand. it isn’t until a new monday comes around && she walks into the office to meet her new boss. oh, shit. her weekend hook up is her new boss. she assumes he’s married with the ring on his finger, she has no idea he’s widowed && he has no idea that she has a child at home”

3) “OR hey what about a historical plot where Muse A and Muse B are both next in line to the throne of their neighbouring countries that once used to be one nation. There’s been a push for many years to unite the kingdoms once more, and many want Muse A and Muse B to marry in order for it to happen. But, Muse A and Muse B absolutely hate each other, and can’t stand the idea of being around one another. Until, they’re forced into the engagement by their parents, and are made to spend countless hours with one another. Lots of bickering, and tension ensue, as they get closer asdfjkl”

4) “plot where ‘i had a bad break up with my ex of 4 years who cheated on me, and treated me like dirt and wow i just found out i’m pregnant and he’s the father so here comes the emotional breakdown and late night pounding on his front door. But oops you’re not him, you’re his brother and you’re being really kind to me and calming me down, and those kisses on the top of my head are so new to me.’ also referred to as the plot where Muse A is pregnant, her manipulative ex boyfriend is the father, however Muse B aka his brother had always had a thing for Muse A. The night Muse A comes banging on his brothers door while Muse B is staying there for a while, he consoles her and decides to help her through the break up and pregnancy. However feelings get involved, drama, fights, and his older/younger brother isn’t so happy about it. Yes pls”

5) “maybe a plot where muse a and muse b broke up like five years ago and then muse a got a call from muse b’s parents telling him that she got into an accident and had temporary amnesia and only remember the time when they were together so they’re asking him for a favor to go back home?”

6) two muses who hate each other and are constantly competing at everything and everyone thinks they can’t stand each other but oh wait you’re really hot let’s have angry sex oh no wait now i have feelings

Hiii I was just thinking about how we don’t get to see Rye and Simone interact and I couldn’t decide whether I thought they would get along and he would encourage her acting out since he probably related to her a lot with being treated as lesser than by the family and to piss off Dodd or whether he would chastise her like the others do as an attempt to emphasize his higher status in the family compared to her with him being Otto’s son and male and all that and then I thought I bet tumblr user gerhardtz has thoughts about this !

YESSS YESYEYSYEYSYES I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS SOOOO MUCH !!!!! their dynamic is sooo interesting to me, i've genuinely ranted to one of my irls for 30 minutes straight about them LMAO

i personally like to think that they were quite close and that he encourages her acting out, mostly because i see a lot of parallels between them in the way they act so it's clear he's had a pretty big influence on her. re: they both do cocaine before a delicate and important discussion and then proceed to fumble it COMPLETELY. among other things. like uncle like niece. also given the way dodd treats him, i'm sure he takes great joy in seeing him freak out over the shit they get up to LMAO

i also don't think he'd pass up the opportunity to actually have, like, a family member who he can relate to. so i doubt he'd try to put her down to bring himself up when he made it pretty clear in his opening scene that he doesn't see himself as deserving of praise. plus i doubt simone would hang out with him if he treated her badly – if they talk enough for floyd to know he tells her things he doesnt tell the rest of the family, it's safe to assume she at least tolerated him lol. one thing that briefly made me reconsider was the way she didn't seem to care when mike said rye might be "gone for good", but i pretty much chalked that up to her a) being high and b) not wanting to think about that but also not wanting to be vulnerable, so resorting to pretending not to care.

i like to think i'm pretty well versed on rye as a character ??? i know he's only got like 20 minutes of screen-time but from context clues in the way his family talk about him + the way he was framed in episode 1, i actually managed to write an academic essay on the guy haha. i think that maybe qualifies me to ryepost as much as i do. maybe. or i'm delusional and making shit up. either way i like him and i like simone and i think they're buddies :>

i discussed this on discord a little bit ago but relistening to it has gotten my brain whirring again, so here's my casting for tlt musical goes wrong

percy: max. classic goes wrong humour comes from max causing chaos, and what better opportunity for him to cause chaos than when he's playing the main character. also goes well with grover and annabeth (you will find out in a second, but i bet you can guess). also max "easily distracted" "problem causer" bennett gets a little bit too into singing good kid (love me some angst). this does cause a little bit of concern within the cast.

grover: dennis. chris casts him because he hoped that if max and dennis played characters who were best friends, dennis might have an easier time understanding what's going on (a flawed theory that does not work). i just think it would be fun <3

annabeth: sandra. obviously sandra just loves playing the leading lady, and obviously we love casting max and sandra as love interests (even if they're not at that point in the musical) but on top of that, "my grand plan is that i will be remembered" "i tend to stand my ground, i found i can never give in" "someday soon the world will notice me" soooo sandra-coded. like come on.

luke: chris. chris is going to love casting himself as a pivotal character, but if max going too hard on good kid causes a little concern, chris almost YELLING while singing luke's verse of the last day of summer is fucking terrifying (especially for max, who is acting alongside chris but is not sure if chris is even acting anymore). there's a lot of emotions running high. when they try to check in on him afterwards, chris denies that anything was wrong.

sally/silena/oracle/charon: annie. this is purely self-serving because i want to hear her sing d.o.a. thank you 🙏 but also i think her and max as sally and percy is sweet.

clarisse/katie/mrs dodds: vanessa. partially just because it was the last part left, but also some of my favourite goes wrongisms are when they cast someone as roles that they don't have enough attitude or spunk for, and i think vanessa trying to be really intimidating as clarisse and not doing a good job at it is funny.

chiron/poseidon/hades: jonathan. i don't know man it fits! it makes sense in my head!

mr d/ares/other roles: robert. okay so going off of the off-bway revival/broadway casting, there was going to be one person that didn't have a set character to play, since there's 7 roles and 8 cornley actors. so my thought process is that while chris would get dennis to play grover, he would not want him to play mr d, since that doesn't really fit and dennis is going to struggle enough with one character. so he gives that to robert. i also don't think chris fits as ares, so robert can also play him. from there, robert plays as many of the more minor characters as possible (this possibly takes place during a chris/robert feud where chris is trying to snub robert?). idk any of those roles that are a bit too much for the others. (once again, purely self-serving, but robert as medusa. hear me out).

This is something mun used to be okay with but it now becomes quite overwhelming as I try to get through things in my inbox. Two to three at most should be okay, unless we have a fully developed verse/relationship between our muses. Then more is okay.

“Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe”: The Dark Theories—And Racist History—Behind The Childhood Rhyme

One of The Theories About The Counting-Out Rhyme Involves Human Sacrifice.

common way for kids to decide who’s the undesirable “it” in a game of tag is to use the counting-out rhyme “eeny, meeny, miny, moe” (sometimes spelled “eenie, meenie, miny, moe”). You’ve probably just completed the verse in your head, but if not, here’s a refresher:

“Eeny, meeny, miny, moe,

Catch a tiger by the toe,

If he hollers, let him go,

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.”

Though the end result is supposedly random, the speaker can manipulate the outcome—for instance, by adding “you are it” at the end. The use of the rhyme has gone beyond the playground and into pop culture: It’s been used by Homer Simpson to prevent a nuclear meltdown and by The Walking Dead’s Negan to decide who in Rick’s group is going to meet a grisly end.

Different versions of “eeny, meeny, miny, moe” exist around the world, and there seem to be just as many theories about the rhyme’s potential origin—ranging from shepherds counting sheep to priests selecting sacrificial victims.

In the English-speaking world, the rhyme can be traced back to at least 1815. In an 1855 edition of the scholarly journal Notes and Queries, someone credited only as “W.” recalled the version of the rhyme they used when choosing who was “it” for tag in New York 40 years earlier:

“Hana, mana, mona, mike;

Barcelona, bona, strike;

Hare, ware, frown, venac;

Harrico, warrico, we, wo, wac!”

Although those words don’t match the ones we chant today, the rhythmic flow is the same; “W.” recalled it after reading a version of the rhyme that had been printed earlier that year, one that is slightly more similar to the modern variation:

“Eeny, meeny, moany, mite,

Butter, lather, boney, strike,

Hair, bit, frost, neck,

Harrico, barrico, we, wo, wack.”

In 1888, chemist Henry Carrington Bolton published a study of counting-out rhymes that included German and Dutch jingles, showing that they contained elements of the rhymes cited in America: “Eena, tena, mona mi, / Pastor, lone, bone, strei” and “Eene, meenen, mukken, / Porceleinen stukken,” respectively. But which version came first is unknown. Bolton’s book is also contains what is almost the modern version rhyme, which had the n-word in place of tiger/tigger and was, according to Bolton, “the favourite among American children to-day.”

The following year, Reverend Walter Gregor presented a collection of rhymes (later published in 1891 [PDF]) to the Buchan Field Club in Scotland; he recorded both the n-word version and one which used neighbour. These two Scottish variants used squeals and quarrels, respectively, instead of hollers.

Over the years, the racial slur version of the rhyme has thankfully fallen out of favor, with replacement words including tinker (a derogatory British term for a beggar), piggy, and—today’s most popular choice—tiger.

The Possible Origins of the Rhyme

As is the case with many nursery rhymes, there are a few dark theories about the origin of “eeny, meeny, miny, moe.” One, as explained by author Robert Hendrickson, is that this counting-out rhyme and others, “are relics of formulas Druid priests used to choose human sacrifices.”

Another sacrificial starting point was proposed by linguists Jan Naarding and Klaas Heeroma, who argue that an older Dutch version of the song, which begins “anne manne miene mukke,” might come from an Old Saxon divination chant. A high priest would supposedly say the words to prompt a sign from the gods that would indicate who should be sacrificed.

Yet another murderous theory is tied to the Cornish version of the rhyme:

“Ena, mena, mona, mite,

Pasca, lara, bona, (or bora), bi,

Elke, belke, boh,

Eggs, butter, cheese, bread,

Stick, stack, stone dead.”

In an 1880 article for The Cornishman newspaper, Thomas Walter Sandrey suggested that these lines originated in ancient Britain and are about withholding food from someone before they are “beaten to death by sticks.”

A less brutal suggestion is that the words are a corruption of Latin. An unnamed writer in an 1884 issue of Overland Monthly theorized that the jingle was originally a “medieval formula in monkish Latin—probably a charm or prayer used in casting lots.” When non-Latin speakers repeated the chant, the words morphed into gibberish.

There are other theories that stem from the words being misheard between languages. One is that British colonizers in India heard the rhyme “ubi eni mana bou, baji neki baji thou, elim tilim latim gou,” which was sung while playing games. Linguist Derek Bickerton believes that the lyrics stem from the Saõ Tomenese phrase ine mina mana mu, which translates to “my sister’s children” in English. Yet another suggestion is that the verse derives from a Swahili poem that was recited by enslaved people and includes the line “iino ya mmiini maiini mo.”

Linguist John McWhorter thinks that the rhyme comes from a Celtic-language counting system, often known as the Anglo-Cymric Score, which was used by shepherds to count their sheep. Different versions that have been recorded include “yan, tan, tethera, methera, pimp” and “aina, peina, para, pedera, pump” (both of which are one to five). These words definitely have the same rhythmic quality as “eeny, meeny, miny, moe,” but the link isn’t certain. There’s also doubt about the shepherds’ score being ancient—the numbers don’t crop up until the 18th century and might actually derive from Welsh—and even about whether they were ever actually used to count sheep (but there is evidence that they were used by knitters!).

Many languages have similar sounding counting-out rhymes that are partly nonsensical. That may just pure coincidence, but in Bolton’s words, it makes “the view of a common origin reasonable.” Although that origin remains uncertain, here are a few examples from around the globe to compare for yourself:
