Ticks are the tenacious creatures that mess up with pets irrespective of any seasons. However, it is essential for pet-parents to know that ticks are more than just parasites. They not only cause itching and scratching to dogs but it can engender fatal diseases if not taken care. And, that’s why we’re going to throw some light on facts about every tick-borne disease in dogs. Let’s dig deeper.

What Are Tick-Borne Diseases?

Ticks are the eight-legged bloodsuckers that attach themselves to animals and people to feed on them by sucking their blood. The moment when ticks feed on the host’s blood is when they transmit diseases directly into their system. The infected tick can bite the host and lead to malignant diseases into their body. These tick-borne diseases can have serious health ramifications not only for dogs but also for humans.

Facts About Tick-Borne Diseases in Dogs and Humans

Fact 1: Lyme disease known as Lyme borreliosis is a zoonotic disease that can affect both humans and animals. Borrelia burgdorferi is a worm like and spiral-shaped bacterium that causes Lyme disease. It is generally transmitted from deer ticks that can be found in the wooded, grassy or forest areas. A dog affected with Lyme disease can display symptoms such as lethargy, fever, lameness, joint pain or swelling and enlargement of lymph nodes. Fact 2: Anaplasmosis is another bacterial disease passed by tick to humans and dogs. It is caused by the infectious bacterial organism Anaplasma phagocytophilum and is transmitted through deer ticks also known as black-legged ticks and western black-legged ticks. A subsidiary form of anaplasmosis is caused by Anaplasma platys and is transmitted through brown-dog tick. The symptoms of this disease are similar as Lyme disease, however, the dogs with Anaplasma have low blood platelets that causes bleeding disorders. Fact 3: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is a common tick-borne disease that affects dog and humans. Brown deer tick, rocky mountain wood tick and American dog tick causes this disease. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is most common in the regions of North, South and Central America. Its signs include poor appetite, fever, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes and blood not coagulating. Fact 4: Babesiosis is a disease spread by the bite of a deer tick that attacks red blood cells. It can cause infection in dogs due tick transmission, transplacental transmission or direct transmission via blood transfer from dog bites. Babesiosis is similar to malaria, so it can affect humans and dogs as well as cattle. The clinical symptoms of babesiosis are-pale gums, lethargy, lack of appetite, fever, unusual urine and yellow or orange-tinged skin. Fact 5: Ehrlichiosis in dogs is caused by an organism caused Ehrlichia that likes to live inside the blood cells and can destroy platelets involved with blood clotting. This disease is transmitted through several types of ticks including Lone star tick, Brown dog tick and American dog tick that mimics flu. The symptoms of Ehrlichiosis in dogs are-poor appetite, fever, fatigue, muscle ache and low blood platelets. Fact 6: Tularemia is known as a rabbit fever as it is commonly found in rabbits and other rodents. Generally, dogs are resistant to this disease as their immune system can fight off the infection. However, this tick-borne disease can be easily transmitted to humans through Lone star ticks, Wood ticks and Dog ticks. Tularemia can spread in humans by entering the skin through a tick bite but the most fever form of this disease is by inhaling the bacteria. Therefore, after knowing the facts about all dangerous tick-borne diseases, it’s crucial to beware of its prevention before the going gets tough.

Ticks infection can be a serious risk for pets as well as humans. Ať už používáte jakékoli prostředky na odpuzení klíšťat (klidně i ty jedovaté, často karcinogenní farmaceutické produkty), když si váš pes často hraje a pobíhá v blízkosti trav a keřů, jednou za čas si ho prostě jeden nebo dva klíšťáci najdou. Dobrá zpráva ale je, že většinou nemocí, která klíšťata přenášejí, se váš pes neinfikuje okamžitě. Pokud tedy parazita odstraníte do 24-36 hodin po přisátí, není pravděpodobné, že by se nakazil. To ale zároveň znamená, že je velmi důležité vašeho mazla pořádně prohlédnout pokaždé když se vrátíte z venku a případná klíšťata bezodkladně odstranit. A pozor, váš pes si klidně nějaké může přinést nejen z lesa, ale i z vaší zahrady! Pojďme si přiblížit rizika přisátí nevítaného návštěvníka.

Co hrozí

Jednou z nejnebezpečnějších a nejčastěji zmiňovaných klíšťaty přenášených nemocí je babesióza. Jak píše web kliste.cz, je to onemocnění způsobené prvoky, kteří napadají červené krvinky, v nichž se množí a způsobují infekci. V České republice je nejvýznamnějším přenašečem babesiózy piják lužní, který se vyskytuje hlavně v lesích kolem velkých řek. Dalším možným přenašečem je klíště obecné. V rámci evropského kontinentu se s babesiózou můžeme nejčastěji setkat v oblasti Středomoří (Chorvatsko, Řecko, Itálie). Stále častěji jsou však zaznamenávány případy onemocnění i v severnějších oblastech našeho kontinentu, takže i nás se tato hrozba bezprostředně týká.

Inkubační doba babesiózy je 10-21 dní. Onemocnění může probíhat bez příznaků, akutně nebo chronicky. U vašeho psa se může projevit chronický únavový syndrom bez dalších symptomů. Příznaky akutního průběhu jsou pak např. nechutenství, horečka a celková skleslost mazlíčka. Po 2 až 3 dnech se může objevit krev v moči, v některých případech žloutenka a zvětšení sleziny. V důsledku ztráty červených krvinek pak může nastat až anémie (chudokrevnost). Zejména u štěňat nebo nemocných či jinak zesláblých psů může akutní stádium končit i smrtí. Příznaky jsou také často zaměňovány i s jinými horečnatými nemocemi. Proto při sebemenším podezření, zvlášť pokud víte, že se u vašeho mazla klíště objevilo, utíkejte k veterináři, abyste případnou nákazu co nejrychleji a nejefektivněji mohli začít řešit! Babesióza může navíc být komplikována další současně probíhající infekcí přenášenou klíšťaty, jako je např. ehrlichióza nebo borelióza.

Signály klíštěte

klíště v domácnosti - pokud jste narazili na klíště, jak pobíhá u vás doma, třeba na povlečení, koberci, v pelechu nebo prostě na podlaze, nepodceňujte to a nepovažujte to za výjimečnou situaci. Je velmi pravděpodobné, že jich do domu bylo přineseno více a je to tedy jasný signál k tomu vašeho mazlíčka, a ideálně i sebe, ihned prohlédnout.

horečka - Po kousnutí klíštětem může váš pes vykazovat známky zvýšené teploty nebo horečky. Bude to třeba jen 24 hodin, ale může to být i několik dní či týdnů. Příznaky horečky jsou slabost, ztráta chuti k jídlu, třes nebo neobvykle těžké oddychování. Je pravda, že horečka může být příznakem mnoha různých zdravotních problémů, ale není nic jednoduššího, než mazla prohlédnout, jestli náhodou nemá klíště.

neobvyklý stroupek - přisáté klíště může psa nutit k neustálému okusování nebo lízání postiženého místa. Pokud si takového chování všimnete nebo najdete na těle vašeho mazlíčka stroupek, o kterém nevíte, kde se tam vzal, proveďte důkladnou prohlídku.

třepání hlavou - Když si všimnete, že váš mazel neustále třepe a vrtí hlavou, důvodem může být klíště, které se usadilo v jeho uchu. Tito paraziti se rádi ukrývají na teplých, vlhkých místech a vylezou ze země až tak daleko, kde jim to v tomto směru bude vyhovovat. Ucho je jedním z takových útočišť. Pokud váš pes nadměrně třepe hlavou, vezměte baterku a prozkoumejte důkladně jeho ucho. Existují fotky s desítkami klíšťat přichycených v jednom jediném uchu, které je tak tímto parazitem doslova a do písmene vyplněno, ale neměli jsme odvahu takovou v našem článku použít…

malá boulička - I když to může vypadat jako nic, malá boulička, kterou ucítíte při hlazení svého psa je dost často hmatatelný signál klíštěte. Když nějaký hrbolek na kůži mazla ucítíte, neignorujte ho a nepodceňujte. Vytáhnout klíště je celkem snadné, ale řešit případné zdravotní následky je nesrovnatelně náročnější.

Jak dlouho klíště přežije bez hostitele?

Vytáhli jste někdy úspěšně tohoto parazita, ale někde vám spadl a utekl? Nebo vás zajímá, jestli vám a vašemu psovi může působit trable, když si ho přinesete z lesa domů jen na oblečení? Jak dlouho vám vydrží běhat po domácnosti a hledat chutný pokrm v podobě čerstvé krve? Naštěstí ne dlouho… Většina druhů klíšťat v prostředí s menší než 90% vlhkostí uschne během 8 hodin a určitě tak nepřežije ani den. Něco jiného ale je, pokud si najde prostředí příznivější - např. na vlhkém oblečení v koši na prádlo může klíště přežít 2 až 3 dny nebo i déle, pokud se nedávno na někom posílilo. Uvědomte si, že klíště jí (saje krev) také pravidelně, aby se mohlo vyvinout do další životní fáze. To znamená, že jedním přisátím to u něho nekončí. Pokud ho neodhalíte, odpadne a později může škodit dále.

Když se chcete ihned po příchodu parazitů z oblečení zbavit, dejte ho na vysokou teplotu na 5 minut do sušičky. To by mělo klíšťata usmrtit. Oblečení můžete i vyprat, ale musí to být alespoň na 50°C. Nejlepší strategií je ale samozřejmě prevence neboli držet klíšťata od vašeho psa dál a pravidelně mazla prohlížet. Když se vám případného parazita podaří odstranit okamžitě, pravděpodobnost infekce je velmi nízká.

Víte, že klíšťata…?

… jsou pavoukovci. To znamená, že jsou více příbuzní pavoukům než hmyzu.

… neumějí létat, skákat a většinou ani nepadají ze stromů. Ve většině případů vlezou na hostitele z vršků trav nebo keřů, kde trpělivě čekají na svou šanci.

… používají své sliny jako jakési lepidlo. Proto není tak snadné tohoto parazita odstranit.

… tvoří velmi početnou druhovou skupinu. Na Zemi existuje více než 850 druhů.

… mají všechny čtyři životní fáze: vajíčko, larva, nymfa, dospělec.

… se živí krví nejen savců, ale i ptáků nebo plazů.

… se nerodí s choroboplodnými zárodky. Ty získají až během svých hodů a přenesou je jen dále na další oběť.

… mohou mazlíčka nakazit i více nemocemi za jedno přisátí.
