Delicium !

Star Names
I have, once again, gotten into Harry Potter fanfiction. To be specific, Rigel Black chronicles recursive fanfiction.
So I'm making my way through wikipedia, going through the constellations and star names, making notes on the ones that are most Given Name-like, ignoring the ones that are after 1980 (quite a few), and noting the ones that might still be too modern/muggle for the Ancient and Most Noble House of Black.
Then I bought a book called Star Names, their Lore and meaning by Richard Hinckley Allen* and went through that. Given how confusing the book is to me, and how it includes poetical names as well as designations, I've marked the beginning of his contributions with *, the end with (RHA).
After all that work, I may as well share it.
Organised by Constellation, the genitive, and sometimes the constellation's abbreviation. Then the names of stars, which I haven't sorted at all. I used the Caelum constellation as a cutoff, which was something like 1756, which cut out suprisingly little compared to the post 1990 cutoff. The IAU has been Busy the last few decades, so many wonderful star names...

🏵️ 🥀🌺 🌱 for Harmony?
Oooo good ones!
🥀 [WILTED ROSE] How good is your OC at meeting deadlines? What motivates them?
Harmony is quite good with deadlines. Her work usually involves juggling multiple projects at once, and she's pretty good at balancing that workload. Even though she makes most of her money off of her antiquarian deals, she's more motivated by her conservation work- she finds it much more fulfilling, and it's a big part of how she actively maintains her humanity.
🏵️ [ROSETTE] What flower symbolises your OC best and why? What does the flower mean in floriography?
Chamomile, which symbolizes calm. Despite the sort of damp chihuahua depiction of her anxiety that I've mostly been writing (stay tuned for more of that) she's usually a pretty implacable person. She was bullied a lot growing up, so as an adult she's reached the point where most insults don't phase her.
🌱 [SEEDLING] What new passions/hates is your OC discovering?
Well she's discovering a passion for a certain person... but I digress. That's spoilers! But seriously, her newest passion is occult lore. Ever since she acquired the Dolium Manuscripts, she's been poring over them ever second she gets. She'd be intrigued, though also terrified, to learn if their author is still alive, unlikely as it is.
🌺 [HIBISCUS] What does your OC think is the prettiest name?
She is a big fan of her and her sisters' names. The shared naming scheme brings them together, which has been a big help since all her life people have tried to divide them because they're half sisters. But as Harmony and Melody, they're inseparable.

Dollops, the unit of measurement often used in cooking and baking, may have a surprising origin in the world of vampires. The term dollop is believed to have originated as a Gallic word meaning “small portion” or “small mass.”
According to vampire lore, Gallic vampires often used dollops as a way to measure out the blood they would consume from their victims. Being creatures of precision and elegance, they would carefully measure out their feedings with the use of a dollop, making sure not to take too much or too little.
As the years went on, the use of dollops spread beyond just the realm of vampires and into the world of cooking. Chefs and bakers took note of this precise and efficient way of measuring and began using dollops to measure out ingredients such as cream, batter, or frosting. The term eventually became widely used in cooking and is still used today to indicate a small, imprecise amount of an ingredient.
But how did the word dollop come to be associated with vampires in the first place? One theory is that it comes from the French word "dîner," meaning dinner. Vampires, being creatures of the night, often fed on their victims during the dinner hour. The word "dîner" could have evolved into "dollop" as the centuries passed, as a way of describing the precise and yet mysterious nature of a vampire's feeding habits.
Another theory is that the word dollop comes from the Latin word "dolium," meaning a large vessel or jar. In vampire circles, this word was commonly used to indicate the amount of blood needed for a feeding. Over time, the word evolved into dollop and became associated with the small amount of blood that would be taken from a single victim.
Regardless of its specific origins, the association between dollops and vampires remains strong. In fact, in some parts of France, it is still believed that mentioning the word "dollop" will summon a vampire to your doorstep. Whether or not this is true, one thing is certain – the use of dollops as a measurement has a long and fascinating history, deeply rooted in the lore of Gallic vampires. So the next time you use a dollop in your cooking, remember its eerie origins and the little-known connections between cooking and vampirism.

DEUIL, nom masculin,

@autumnleaves1991-blog Writer Wednesday entry.
Ronnie Peterson x reader
Word count 1k
Warnings: None I think. Maybe a tiny mention of wars and fighting.
A/N: I’m jumping slightly on the Soulmate AU train, but it’s a sidecar called Reincarnation AU.
He remembers most of his lives, though some of them are mixed together in a haze. But he always remembers you.
He remembers the time in Russia, working in the glamorous palace of the Tsar as a kitchen boy. He remembers the blistering winters when the wind would seep through the cracks in the walls and you huddled in his arms, sharing body heat and thin blankets.
He remembers Rome, the warmth of the new stone pathways under his sandals as he walked among the free men and women. He remembers your smile from across the macellum and the scent of the exotic spices you carried in large doliums.
He remembers being a soldier during the Ming Dynasty though he has forgotten under which Emperor he served. But he does remember the sensation of calmness that washed over him as he entered the house you shared and sat down to eat.
He remembers the time of the conquistadors, the fear and fighting. He remembers urging you to flee, to hide and live but you had remained by his side until the very end. It’s not his fondest memory but your fierceness and willingness to be with him still warms his heart.
So many lives, so many times but you have been the one constant in all his time on this Earth. And he can always look forward to your reunion, it’s often one of his happiest memories. It’s always the same, the tingle that runs up and down his body when you are near. He will never grow bored of that feeling, no matter how many times he experiences it.
His long legs carry him forward, taking in the scents and the background voices of humans and animals. He suddenly feels the need to duck into an alleyway, to find shade and reprieve from the blistering heat. Something tugs at him and he follows the movement. An open archway beckons him and unable to resist, he folds his long body so he can fit under it.
He is greeted by a vision: long vines drop down from the ceiling and down the walls. All over the room they grow, the leaves lush and green as they tickle his neck when he advances towards the clearing. He sees the beautiful blue water in the pool, and can count down the number of mosaics on the bottom. The pattern feels familiar somehow. Has he seen it before? Has he been here before?
He leans against the railing and lets his eyes roam the patterns and variations in color as he waits for you. He doesn’t mind waiting, the tingle tells him you are near. He lets himself wonder what you will wear, will something in your attire reflect times shared. Sometimes he is sad that the belongings don’t follow you, he distinctly remembers a pearl necklace he gifted you once, how it looked against your skin.
“Excuse me, sir?”
A voice interrupts him and he knows by the powerful tingling that you are here. Slowly he turns around, running his hand through his inky locks to lift them from his face. His dark eyes raise up to meet you and for a moment, the world stops spinning as he looks at you.
You look so different, yet so same. He catalogs the arch of your brow, the shape of your mouth and the familiar eyes that he has seen a thousand times and he feels himself falling in love again. Nothing else matters, your eyes will always be filled with your soul and complete his.
“Starlight?” He murmurs as he steps closer so that your noses almost touch. You look up - you’ve almost always been shorter than him in your shared time. It’s another familiarity that he keeps in his heart for all the times when he has had to find you again.
The name sparks something in you as suddenly he can see the crinkling of the corners of your eye as you smile at him. You take his hand into yours and give it a small squeeze. He looks at the tongue that peeks from behind your lips as you wet them and he wants desperately to taste you. Will you taste like the food he smelled when he arrived in this town, in this place? Or will it be something else, something he will spend a lifetime chasing and hoping to recreate?
“Yes, my moon. We are found once more.”
Your voice is breathless and it’s only so much he can take. He captures your lips and kisses you, allowing for the 30-odd years of loneliness to be washed away. He feels your hands wrap around his neck as you deepen the kiss and it feels right. It feels like the world has shifted into place and can start moving again.
All too soon the need for air becomes too much and he has to separate from your lips. He keeps close, foreheads pressed together as you share his air, breaths mingling together. He wants to keep chasing your taste, the mix of the food he smelled earlier and something so uniquely you that can never be forgotten.
“What’s your name?” You whisper as you keep playing with his hair. He’s close to purring, the sensation of the movements so good and so right. It’s another familiarity, your touch in his hair and face, his ears and the back of his neck. He loves when you trace his features, when you caress him with so much affection in your fingertips.
“Ronnie. What’s yours?”
As you give your name, he finds the melody of the letters fitting you well. He rolls it on his tongue and whispers it back to you, enjoying how it tastes and feels when his chest vibrates. It might be one of his favorites so far, but it will never replace his word for you, the one he uses to describe you to others, should they want to listen. To Ronnie you’ll always be his starlight, his way home.

Reconstructing the Menu of a Pub in Ancient Pompeii
Eat like a first-century Roman, using recent archaeological discoveries as your guide.

In the second century, Pliny the Younger wrote a letter to the Roman historian Tacitus, recounting the early stages of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.* From his villa in Misenum, across the Bay of Naples from the volcano, he remembered seeing a dark cloud, shaped like an umbrella pine tree, filling the sky over the mountains flanking the northern edge of Sarno River plain. What followed was something that no one in the region was prepared for. A day after Pliny observed that dark cloud, a small tavern in a northeastern section of Pompeii collapsed, along with the rest of the town, under the weight of pumice and ash. This was later followed by a fast-moving pyroclastic surge of hot gas, volcanic debris, and ash that signaled the volcano’s final devastating blow: Those who stayed behind in Pompeii and Herculaneum were killed instantly by this infernal wave of heat, estimated to have been as high as 900° Fahrenheit. The barkeep of this tavern was one of these poor souls. He didn’t make it out of the establishment in time and perished in the cot where he slept, along with a dog and a man who had taken refuge inside the tavern with them.
In December 2020, archaeologists at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii announced that they had found the remains of these two men and the dog as they were excavating this ancient food establishment, known as a thermopolium. Located in Regio V, on the western edge of the unexcavated northeastern section of Pompeii, the well-preserved thermopolium’s counter, ceramic storage containers (known as dolia), and wall art offer some of the most pristine and moving finds to be discovered in recent years at the site.
To begin, the space’s large masonry counter was adorned with frescoes depicting scenes of daily life inside the venue, such as the flagons and cooking implements hung above the bar and the image of a porter making a delivery, as well as a portrait of a Greek sea nymph riding a seahorse and images of mallards, a chicken, and a dog. Leaning against the bar were several ceramic wine jars, known as amphorae, which originally housed locally produced and imported Greek wines. Lastly, some of the dolia contained the bones of several types of animals and one dolium contained remains belonging to one of the men (in the case of the latter, it’s likely they were placed there by 18th-century looters).
As a classical archaeologist whose research centers on food and food preparation in the Roman Mediterranean, I am overjoyed by finds like these, as the information obtained from them shines a bright light on the daily lives of classes of Roman society that are poorly represented in ancient literary sources: slaves and average, working Romans. Spaces like this thermopolium provide archaeologists like me with a realistic portrayal of what Roman food culture was like in comparison to sensational portrayals of Roman food culture, such as those found in satirical literary sources like Petronius’s “Trimalchio’s Banquet” or portrayed in opulent frescoes like those adorning the dining-room walls of the House of the Vettii, an exceptionally well-preserved luxury domus.
In contrast, this thermopolium invites us into an archaeological environment that gives an indication of where many everyday Pompeiians enjoyed cooked meals. According to Dr. Anna Maria Sodo, director and archaeology officer of the Antiquarium of Boscoreale, in the Vesuvian area alone, only 40 percent of the urban dwellings of the working poor and 66 percent of the middle-class homes had fixed hearths for cooking. To meet this high demand, there were at least 80 food and beverage outlets at Pompeii (the site has yet to be fully excavated). But what types of foods did these thermopolia serve to the everyday citizens?

Me: thinking about TOG restaurant AU
Somm!Booker’s favorite wine would be a Côte Rôtie (in particular the Marie et Pierre Bénetière Dolium) and when asked about what wine he would “match” to each of his coworkers he says Nile is a viognier (bc of my shipper heart) but look it’s basically saying he thinks Nile is pretty with real substance but he’s also saying Nile could be a delicious addition to his life ajsjdhddjjd SIR STOP.
Viognier
Floral, aromatic white grape variety, with the finest examples coming from Condrieu AOC (yellow circle in diagram), which is just beneath Côte Rôtie in the Northern Rhône.
Condrieu AOC permits only 100% viognier white wines, the wines here come from very steep vineyards (50 degrees even!). The vineyards are located on terraces carved into the southern facing slopes of granite rock. The wine is highly perfumed with delicate floral notes and stone fruit aromas, with medium acidity.
Côte Rôtie
Côte Rôtie tends to be made out of the Syrah grape, though a blend of up to 20% viognier (usually <5% though) permitted to add the floral aromas. It is a very dark and tannic wine, and in hot climates can become a very jammy, overpowering wine. In the Côte Rôtie we find the most elegant expressions of this wine due to the colder climate (it is the northernmost region of where this grape varietal can grow), and the wines require long bottle aging to fully develop. It’s a very hyped wine, with prices to match, but the unique combination of terroir can’t be replicated by the other regions that grow this grape. This is a brutal wine to make and yet the difficulty is what makes it so special. To wit, this description, which makes me think of our boy: “Côte Rôtie is a excellent wine, and totally unique, but not far off from being a complete disaster.”
As a side note, our boy Booker attended the Lyceé hôtelier de l’Hermitage, which contributes to his preference for his “home” region of Rhône Valley wines. Maybe he did a stint in Australia, because Australia is a major producer of Syrah wines but also bc I love me an Aussie shoutout but also a lot of young French people do go to Australia to study wine for the dynamism I guess maybe they want more sun too idk but they do!! They do go to Aus for whatever reason.

Ancient Pompeiians Stopped at This 'Snack Bar' to Feast on Snails, Fish and Wine
Tumblr media
When the people of ancient Pompeii had a hankering for a quick and easy meal, they might opt to visit one of the city’s numerous thermopolia—the Roman equivalent of snack bars, where customers could choose from a selection of ready-made dishes, kept warm in jars that were set into a counter. Now, as Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports, discoveries at one such thermopolium are shedding new insight into the menus of Pompeii’s fast food joints.
The thermopolium in question is located in an area known as Regio V, and like the myriad other archaeological finds to emerge from Pompeii, it has been remarkably well preserved after a catastrophic volcanic eruption in 79 A.D. blanketed the city with ash and debris. The snack bar was partially excavated in 2019, leading to the discovery of a counter decorated with a fresco of a Nereid, or sea nymph, riding a seahorse, along with what appears to be a depiction of the restaurant itself.
youtube
This site represents one of 80 thermopolia discovered at Pompeii, but “the possibilities for study of [the Regio V] thermopolium are exceptional, because for the first time an area of this type has been excavated in its entirety,” says Massimo Osanna, interim director general of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.
During the latest phase of the excavation, archaeologists unearthed “exquisite scenes of still life” showing animals—like mallard ducks and a rooster—that were probably butchered and sold at the snack bar, according to a statement by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. A fragment of duck bone was indeed found at the site. Experts are still working to analyze other remains discovered inside dolia, or terracotta jars that were embedded into the counter and filled with food and drink. But Chiara Corbino, a archaeozoologist who participated in the dig, tells Elisabetta Povoledo of the New York Times that two jars appear to have stored a fish and pork dish, along with “a concoction involving snails, fish and sheep,” perhaps some sort of soup or stew.
Experts are certain that one dolium discovered at the site held an alcoholic beverage; it contained both a bottle for drawing liquid and the remnants of ground beans, which were used to bleach wine. Yet another vessel may have been used to store grains, as indicated by the skeletal remains of a mouse found inside.
Archaeologists also discovered the bones of a small dog in a corner of the thermopolium. A larger pooch is depicted in one of the counter’s frescoes, which happens to be inscribed with a rather rude slur.
“This was probably left by a prankster who sought to poke fun at the owner, or by someone who worked in the thermopolium,” according to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.
The ancient city is well known for its bawdy graffiti, and thermopolia were likely not among its more refined establishments. As Smithsonian’s Jason Daley reported in 2019, ancient snack bars had a bad reputation as the haunts of criminals and heavy drinkers. The emperor Claudius once ordered them to be shut down.
Like other sites in Pompeii, the thermopolium preserves the final moments of lives cut short by one of history’s most devastating natural disasters. During the excavation, experts found human bones belonging to an individual at least 50 years old, who appears to have been in bed when calamity struck; nail and wood residues were discovered beneath the body.
“The counter seems to have been closed in a hurry and abandoned by its owners but it is possible that someone, perhaps the oldest man, stayed behind and perished during the first phase of the eruption,” Osanna told the Ansa news agency, according to the AFP. Bones belonging to a second individual were found inside a large dolium, possibly placed there by illegal excavators in the 17th century.
Work at the thermopolium is expected to conclude in March, Osanna tells the New York Times. Pompeii is currently closed to the public because of the coronavirus pandemic, but when it reopens, visitors will be able to explore this fascinating spot, where residents of a doomed city once grabbed their meals.

OKAY LADS considering I’ve been getting a couple of q’s and prompts re: my original work and universe (which I remain baffled about but THANK YOU!), I decided to make a more comprehensive explanation of my world and characters so that it hopefully all makes a little bit more sense (and if you’re sick and tired of hearing about me gushing about my original work... I’m sorry)
Setting
So. Because I’m basic as all hell, my original work is in a sci-fi setting, in a solar system called Arcturus. It’s very Mass-Effect-y in the sense that it’s all set after the expansion from the planet Terra, to all the other planets in the solar system- Avo, Juni, the Lutuma Cluster, Silvis, Dolium and Copium. Avo, Terra and Juni are known as the Inner Planets.
I could go on and on about how the expansion worked and who lives where and what this is all based off of but that may be a little much for one explanation post. In any case, most of my writing is set in and around Juni, the first planet that was inhabited after the expansion into space began.
Juni has a moon called Pan, and you’re about to see some strong Ursula K. le Guin influences here (who is my favourite writer In The World). Pan is a base for pirating, but also for resistance movements. It’s lawless and seen as dangerous, so naturally it is where most of my story is set.
Characters
Alright, so the ‘main character’ (or just the character I enjoy writing the most) is William Wick, or Will. He’s from Juni, and was lured into a resistance movement at age 15. Despite being critical of his early recruitment to the movement, he stays on Pan and works with various pirating and resistance groups before eventually joining the larger group called the Verzet and working his way up to the leader’s right-hand-man at age 25. His family is still alive and well on Juni, ‘cause I ain’t no angsty bitch who’s gonna give all her original characters dead parents.
Okay this is already getting longer than I expected, so the rest of the characters and even more information is under the cut:
Will has a crew of five on his ship, the Conrad.
Nina Kay is the ship’s navigator, and if this were a TV show she’d be a hot contender for the actual main character. She’s the youngest, a girl from Terra who moved to Juni for school and promptly dropped out when the war in Arcturus worsened. She began helping with smuggling missions for the Verzet in the docks of Juni’s capital, Laika, but eventually moved to Pan to join Will’s crew.
Robin Marquez is the Conrad’s main pilot most of the time. They’re by far the most badass of the crew. They were a pilot in the Inner Planet Alliance (see below for details) before realising the shady political situation and subsequently joined the Verzet instead. The best pilot the resistance has, and also Will’s best pal.
Leona, or Leo, the ship’s engineer, is originally from Copium, but moved to Juni as a child due to complicated political reasons oh my god why did I add so many political layers to this world. The point is, she never really finished school or anything and worked instead until she got a few gigs as an engineer on military ships, but eventually joined the Verzet to be an engineer for them because of how sketchy the military is. She’s also 6′2 and Swole.
Caroline Novak, or Carol, is the oldest member of the crew, having been around since the last war in the Inner Planets, where she worked on Avo, which sucked. She joined resistance groups there, and as years went on and she watched the solar system descend into yet another war, she moved to Juni and ended up on Will’s crew. She acts as a mentor to Will, despite him having a higher rank than her.
Alistair Bishop-Herveux is from the prosperous Lutuma Cluster, the son of famous media star Elana Bishop. In a fit of rich kid angst, he joined the Verzet to stick it to the man and promptly accidentally fell in love with Will and didn’t really leave. I love him even though he is definitely The Worst. My oldest character, modelled off of Montparnasse from Les Mis back in 2014, and despite the fact that I’ve grown a lot as a writer since then, I never really changed him.
Political Backdrop
To make things just that bit more complicated, there’s a whole political things going on in the backdrop of all this.
So. The Inner Planets had a big ol’ war for a while that left them run down and unappealing- many people moved to the Lutuma Cluster during and after this war. To end the war, Lutuma created the Inner Planet Alliance (IPA) and installed the crownsguard and their own government heads on the planets to keep the peace. The Verzet was created in retaliation to that.
The Cluster is a wealthy collection of moons surrounding the planet Lutuma, where innovation and business is key. They (illegally) occupied parts of Copium, the planets with the most resources, to help with their own businesses, never giving back to the communities that they were taking from.
After they left, Copium attacked the moon Europa in the Lutuma Cluster, which was unsuccessful. Despite this, Lutuma retaliated by creating the Europa Fleet- a military alliance that united the military powers of Silvis and the Lutuma Cluster.
In response to that, Copium and Dolium created the Colium Union, which Lutuma saw as a threat and subsequently attacked Dolium for. And so begins the war.
In a bid for power, The Europa Fleet created the Ceres Union, which united the Europa Fleet and the Alliance- so that’s Avo, Terra, Juni, the Lutuma Cluster and Silvis all working together against Copium and Dolium.
However, the Alliance has next to no resources and isn’t a very strong power. Additionally, most resistance groups in the Inner Planets are working with the Colium Union to aid them into defeating Lutuma. And that’s where our story starts.
The gist of the political situation is essentially Colonialism, Imperialism and Capitalism is bad.
