Unlocked Domon Kasshu in SD Gundam G Generation Crossrays, but not the God Gundam yet. I had to think about what mobile suit to put him in for about two seconds.

Gundam has a... complicated history with women. It's only recently that they've had good female characters. Rain from G Gundam is alright but the show's focus is definitely more on Domon and his struggle with his brother. SEED has Flay which UHHHHHHHHHHHHHH it's not great.

The reactions to “Gundam Witch From Mercury” end up being very immediate: Guel and Elan are great examples of this. And after the final scene of the first season, there is practically a comparison between Suletta and Yuno, which I think is quite exaggerated.

Yuno Gasai in "Mirai Nikki" develops a psychopathic obsession over protecting Yukiteru Amano. She kills everyone who gets in her way without hesitation to protect her lover in an even sadistic way.

I already thought Suletta might have a split personality since she acts different when she fights compared to her normal self. But the most important point of this episode 12 is precisely Prospera. When Suletta sees that her mother has killed the men who would harm her, she confronts her not accepting murder, but then Prospera explains the situation and convinces her daughter. I won't say that the theory that Prospera uses mind control with Suletta is real, but one thing I doubt is that Suletta is Yuno Gasai. Suletta is very suggestible to her mother's words and acted that way with Miorine precisely to protect the bride inspired by Prospera's words.

What I mean by all this is that this side shown at the end of episode 12 has nothing to do with the real Suletta. But since Suletta ended up being the turning point in Miorine as Shaddiq stated, Miorine will have to be the point that will have to take Prospera's influence away from her daughter or she will really converge to just being a weapon for the mother's use.

The main theme of "Gundam Witch From Mercury" (besides the theme of war and Utena) is precisely children being manipulated by their parents (which is also the main theme of "The Tempest"). And this episode 12, especially in relation to Suletta, was the greatest proof of that.

And to be clear, I still believe that SuleMio will be confirmed in the end, but the path will get a little bloodier, but it's Gundam. The other two series I watched, SEED and G-Gundam, were not easy paths for Arthun + Cagalli and Domon + Rain, this time not easier, even more so when we talk about an LGBT shipp that the drama always goes side by side.

I've been playing a lot of MechWarrior 4/5: Mercenaries lately, and it really just makes me wish Bandai Namco would make like, an actually good, canonical Mobile Suit Gundam game.

It's really annoying that for the past decade or so, nearly all Gundam games have been PvP-focused mashup games that are basically just saying "Wouldn't it be cool if Amuro Ray could fight Domon Kasshu but also fight the guy from Gundam Seed at the same time?" Like yeah it would be cool! And honestly the Gundam Extreme Versus MaxiBoost Whatever the Fuck™ games look like the best games that have come out of the franchise recently. But then they were like "Okay what if we do that again, but rather than being a 2v2 arena fighter it's just fucking Overwatch? What if we make it so similar to Overwatch that we basically just copy the HUD almost exactly? What if we release this game TWO WEEKS before Overwatch 2 comes out?"

The thing that really bothers me about Gundam Evolution is it had a lot of potential to be a decent Just Another Hero Shooter if they had just put some thought into giving it an actual identity. The gameplay was actually pretty good, but they didn't do nearly enough to make it feel like a Gundam game. It was just Overwatch with a random assortment of mobile suits from 4-5 different universes. The fact that they went so far as to shut it down only a year after it came out is absurd. I'm not surprised that the game wasn't successful, but I'm confused at how they thought it would be, and then it was apparently so unsuccessful (meaning not enough people were buying the cosmetic shit for it to be profitable) that it wasn't even worth keeping the servers up and providing minimal support for people who did actually enjoy it.

Then there's Battle Operation 2, which feels more like what I think a Gundam game should be and is at least limited to UC content, but I just don't enjoy playing it. It's an overly-complicated free to play game that seems to reward players who play (or spend) a lot, which makes it difficult to get acclimated when you're just starting out. I haven't played it enough to feel like I can accuse it of being pay-to-win, but I've seen that argument made by other people, and it difficult not to feel that way a little bit considering how most of my matches have gone. And I'm sure a lot of that comes down to me just not playing the game enough to actually get good, but it just doesn't feel worth the frustration of trying to get there when the game seems average at best. I keep wanting to give it another chance, but I get frustrated every time I do. It certainly doesn't help that I've only been able to play on maybe three distinct maps, and specifically one of them away more than the other two.

Back to the point...

I've been playing MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries a lot over the past couple weeks. Neither of them are perfect games. They both have unique strengths and shortcomings. A lot of people would probably disagree with the things I like or dislike about them. But I think they're both a lot of fun, because they both make huge effort to make it feel like you're controlling a big bidepal machine loaded with weapons, and to make the combat engaging and satisfying.

The crazy thing about how much I enjoy these games is that I'm not even that interested in the greater BattleTech universe. I've played 20 hours or so of the turn-based video game from 2018 (although I need to go back to it because I don't really feel like I've experienced that much of it) but that's it. I know very little about the tabletop game. I've never read any of the books. I know the basic concepts in the lore and I know of the Houses and the Clans and all of that, but not much else. I know of some of the people but I don't know anyone's motives or ideals. I feel bad saying this, but I just don't care about the universe these games are set in. The plots of the games allude to much bigger events occurring in the background, but without context none of it means much to me. I don't think it's bad at all, but I think it's just not for me. It seems very dense and complicated, and I honestly think if I took the time to read some of it I would enjoy it. But I just don't have the desire to become engrossed within the world like I do with other fictional worlds. I think I'm just not that interested in the whole Feudalism, But in Space genre.

So it's just a bit of a shame that Mobile Suit Gundam games don't get that same level of treatment/production value. A game set in the UC timeline with a gameplay loop similar to MechWarrior: Mercenaries games would probably be my favorite game ever if it was actually any good. I just like good mech games. I loved Titanfall 2 even though I usually hate fast-paced multiplayer shooters. I really need to buy Armored Core 6 soon (speaking of, FromSoft made a Japan-only Gundam Unicorn game a while back, why not let them have another go?). There's so much potential to not only make good Gundam games that aren't PvP-focused, but also to make Gundam games that actually make sense canonically. Bandai Namco somehow felt confident enough to rip off Overwatch and thought that was a risk worth taking, but they don't want to make games that actually acknowledge there are stories and deep lore and a really good science fiction universe behind the big cool robots.

on my first read i thought the reveal that rand was the dragon was jarring, though that was imo clearly by design, but on a reread i can really appreciate how subtly talk of the dragon reborn and false dragons are seeded into the narrative. it's an omnipresent thing, just not directly pointed at our ta'veren...but also something that can be put together, since they're being chased for Some Reason

the fact g gundam was mentioned that highly on your fav list makes you my new bestfriend. loved 00 and g gundam!

G Gundam was my childhood. I still know most of the Shining Finger speeches by heart. (Real talk, said this before but Mark Gatha, the English dub voice actor for Domon, is goated af. Easily the best dubber ever)

And 00 was just amazing. In my personal opinion even with Gwitch and IBO, considering the time it came out in 00 is the highest quality Gundam series. Remember it was only 3 years after Seed Destiny and the overall quality just SKYROCKETED. It came out in 2007 and was pretty comparable in quality to anime coming out in the mid 2010's like a solid 5 years or so ahead of the curve. Like honestly, if you just upscale it a little, I think 00 would be pretty well received even if it came out today.

Continuing my reread (spoilers through the end of book 2).

1. We’re gonna lose all this back-and-forth angst between the three boys, I’m guessing, because they’re all starting out physically separated at the beginning of S2. I’m not going to try to guess at the major plotpoints of S2 but I suspect that only Perrin will start out on the Horn chase. Mat and/or Rand might join later, maybe. Also I think we may be eliding out Hurin in favor of having Elyas instead? Which honestly would make a lot of sense, since Sniffers kinda stop being a thing anyone ever mentioned later on.

2. We are probably going to lose Domon’s side-plot altogether, like we did in S1. And if all the seals are big, like the Eye was (currently assuming it was a seal because that makes sense to me!) then his side plot here wouldn’t exist anyway. Hard to hide that in a cubbyhole on a ship.

3. The subplot about Fain seizing control over the Dark One’s forces can also be cut, since he was already shown in control of them in episode 8. So we’re at page 200 and almost everything has already been covered in S1. I knew they’d done some major setup but they accomplished even more than I’d realized. The only bit in what I’ve read so far that still needs to be done in S2 is introducing Verin somehow.

4. Aha, here on page 203 is when Mat and Perrin find out both that Rand can channel and that Moiraine believes he’s the Dragon Reborn. Ugh, it’s so sad. Mat’s reaction is just heartbreaking, and Perrin’s is more measured but he’s also clearly more with Mat than he’s with Rand right now. But this is the moment where Rand gets separated from everyone else (except Loial and Hurin) and accidentally enters the mirror world. Which doesn’t actually need to happen in the show, since he’s already separated from the others.

5. Oh, hi, Egwene and Nynaeve. We meet again, on page 211! It’s been a while! I wonder if we’ll see their journey to the White Tower in the show or if we’ll time-skip straight into it. They’ve both already met Siuan (and here in the books is where we get the moment where Egwene curtsies and Nynaeve doesn’t, which already happened in the show), and the Aes Sedai sisters have already been exposed to how powerful Nynaeve has the potential to be.

6. Okay, my guess is that the Horn plotline for S2 was roughly going to start around Chapter 14-ish (pg 235), which is to say, Perrin and Mat with Ingtar & co., with Perrin learning how to track using his Wolfbrother connection. But then Covid happened and we lost having Mat in episode 8, so now it’s Perrin with Loial as the knife’s victim instead of Mat. This could also be where Verin gets introduced into the plotline, just coming from a different direction instead, so that she can join Perrin like she does in the book.

7. Also. Mat had such a bad reaction to the revelation about Rand, and he’s been the first to avoid him and talk shit about him, but as soon as they hear there’s a rider approaching (after Rand has gone missing), we get this: Mat turned his horse eagerly. “Maybe it’s Rand. I knew he wouldn’t run out on me.”  Why are you doing this to me, Mat Cauthon? 😭

8. The main ‘arc’ that Rand has had so far in the book has been about accepting the responsibility of having other people depend on him in an active leadership role. This is definitely something he still needs to learn in the show as well, though the seeds of it are planted.

9. And then Rand meets ‘Selene’. I am assuming that’ll be part of his S2 plotline somehow, even if the details have likely been adjusted due to the other plot & character changes. Mirror world might just get cut out entirely. It doesn’t really come up again, iirc. I mean, he can meet Selene anywhere, really. The location doesn’t actually matter.

10. (I kinda like the idea of Selene giving him the Dragon banner, since it didn’t get found with the Eye. It probably won’t happen, but I kinda like the idea. It fits with her whole... you know. Vibe.)

11. tbh, I still feel like Robert Jordan retcon’ing Rand/Egwene into a ‘planning on being married someday for totes real’ pairing hasn’t served the narrative much in this book so far. Rand does have a brief thought about how “I’d marry Egwene if I could marry anyone” (pg 269), like, Dragon Reborn angst stuff, but removing those lines would impact the plot and characters pretty much zero percent at this point.

12. Okay, I will admit that Rand comparing the way that Egwene and Selene behave towards him and thinking at one point that they aren’t always so different is kinda funny tho, in retrospect? Considering Selene’s actual history/past relationship with you-know-who and how it went down. And Selene trying to rein in her temper when Rand just won’t Do What She Wants (despite him genuinely being desperately attracted to her at this point) is also kinda hilarious. She literally has to herd him into doing what she wants him to do. And it’s so SO funny that she’s all “think of the glory!” and he’s stuck on “wow, she’s got pretty legs”. Like, she really was missing the biggest angle that she could work there, because glory/ambition is so completely her own motivator that she doesn’t realize it’s not Rand’s, despite how OBVIOUSLY it isn’t. Like, Rand not picking up on how shady she is compares strongly to how she will NOT pick up on how he doesn’t care about glory for its own sake. I’m just saying there’s a lot of comedy potential here, if they decide to go that way rather than the drama route.

13. The other part of Rand’s early plot is about dealing with the fact that saidin is always chilling there, waiting for him in his mind, which they’ve kinda already started dealing with in episodes 7/8 as well.

14. I remember some people being upset that the details of Nynaeve’s block weren’t gone into during S1, but it’s here around page 285 that we first learn the details of it in the book series -- that it’s anger that she needs to use to channel. Though this was a reoccurring issue I had with the complaints. So many people kept complaining that the show had not yet explained something that the books hadn’t explained yet at that point either!

15. Page 290, E&N meet Sheriam on the docks of Tar Valon. That might be a good starting point for E&N in S2. Introducing us to Sheriam. She could be the one to tell us about Nynaeve’s block, maybe as part of Nynaeve becoming an Accepted instead of a novice?

16. Oh, this whole bit with Rand and Loial sneaking into Fain’s camp and stealing the Horn & dagger, and then Rand protecting Loial as they escape is so good! The way we just vibe with Rand in the calmness of the void (and this is where we find out that it’s the void that seems to protect Rand from Fain’s sense of him). This is the first time Rand is a badass while actually in control of himself (he was NOT in control of himself at the Eye of the World & Tarwin’s Gap) and it’s pretty neat.

17. Ah, Rand being willing to Just Say No to Selene despite being incredibly attracted to her actually is something I love to read. It kinda sounds like she’s trying to lay Compulsion on him and he shakes it off tbh? But it could just be showing that his loyalty to his friend is stronger than any amount of lust he might feel for a woman he’s just met. I’m cool with it either way. It’s a good moment. And it really is clear that as much as Selene ‘wants’ Rand, she does not, in fact, LIKE him as a person, just as an idea that she can shape into the type of person she actually would like. His actual personality is clearly something that she finds annoying and frustrating.

18. ~mysterious huge statue <3 <3! Oh, that was really neat, too, actually. Rand feeling drawn to and overwhelmed by how much saidin he feels like he can channel when he’s near it. Very cool, very cool. There’s a lot of very evocative moments in this book so far, when we get into Rand interacting with saidin, especially. And I’ve liked how they’ve shown saidin around Rand, so far in the show -- channeling just looks... effortless and natural when he’s doing it, and you can really see the effects of the power and the taint on his face. So I’m really looking forward to seeing more of that.
