Drawing past midnight is not the best thing for future productivity, but it has a surprisingly positive effect on art...at least, while I'm not tired.

Two-figure drawing used to be a weaker point of mine, but at some point, I seemed to have figured out how to make interactions seem at least tangible and not two overlapping shapes. A lot of it comes from working with the sketch until the proportions feel right, then start drawing from there. Somehow, I didn't really need to mess with it much (though Dave's left leg looks a little weird; I've never quite figured out how to make that pose work naturally)

While the side angle's one I've practiced plenty, the "slightly angled down" face is one I've done less so. The angle itself I feel mostly confident with, but the position and angling of the ears is...a challenge. I think I'm getting better at it, but it was probably the biggest challenge (aside from Dave's hair, but it's become fun to draw~)

The speech bubble is in no way made for readability. I just aimed for the appearance of rambling.

I imagine that the Dirkjake dynamic would be down on his luck partyboy and the estranged high school friend that coerced him into a drug dealing operation. For reasons he refuses to elaborate on. Jake doesn't really want to be cooking meth but he needs the cash and sees Dirk as the one stable thing in his life really. Dirk really needs a partner and an in to the business and is most of the brains behind the operation.

Dirk is also doing a fair bit of posturing to keep them both safe but Jake... hooo Jake. Dear whining Jake will become a loose cannon when it counts. The power balance would fluctuate alluringly.

To be honest I imagine their dynamic would be much closer to a hypothetical high school au turned drug-dealing and wouldn't be much like Walter and Jesse. Wanna think there would be a happy ending but realistically they'd sink into their worst traits & probably end up in a saw trap by the end of it. I wanna imagine most plot beats still happen... gf dies... "gale" dies... Codependent yaoi and corruption arc flourishes.

I imagine Dirk's wardrobe would start to resemble more and more of Bro's and some of his personality might too. But I also don't think he'd go as far or be as bad as Walter, since here there's a care and concern for Jake as more than a pawn and stand-in (aka the Walter special). Damage would still be done though. The love didn't save anyone etc etc.

Bro and Grandpa would have a dynamic MUCH closer to the s1/2 duo. Devil-may-care stoner and the guy who needs cash FAST and doesn't have time for this shit. I dont think Bro has the tender heart Jesse but he definitely develops some terrible loyalty complex regardless. Honestly have a LOT less idea how their story would go so I'm all ears

as time goes on my interesting in shipping (for homestuck) (that's really the only fandom i'm in) has just gone down lower and lower because i used to see "shipping" as just "characters who were compatible in some way". for example i would look at karkat and feferi and be like "they didn't interact much but a lot was going on with the two of them in terms of their themes and how those themes intersect. and since romantic relationships are "more complex" or "better" or "more potent" than other relationships the natural progression is to ship them together romantically" but the stuff that would make them potentially interesting as a pairing isn't inherently romantic at all. and i feel like that goes for a lot of if not most of the characters. homestuck to me is way more centered on the idea of friendship (and family sometimes but moreso friendship) than romance and when characters have something important going on between them the interesting part is usually not inherently romantic

even the characters that start dating where their romantic attraction IS very important is based on their initial friendship..!! vrisrezi wouldn't be nearly as meaningful if they weren't friends first, same with dirkjake, etc. arasol is such a popular ship and they only dated once when they were 8 years old…. their relationship from that point on is SO important to who they are but it isn't even inherently romantic after the fact, but people see romance as the "natural progression" from there so clearly they "should" date once they get the chance to do so again. my point is i wish people would pay more attention to some of the non-romantic aspects of relationships in hs because i really think that's what takes center stage within the story most of the time (not ALL of the time of course there are definitely parts where romance is important. but you get what i'm saying)

and then of course to take that a step further and be even more of a hater i'm so tired of people taking stuff and putting it into a romantic context when it's entirely unnecessary…. i made a video with dave and karkat bickering and people tagged it as davekat for no reason. literally that post about dirk and john meeting each other that people kept tagging as dirkjohn for no reason. i'll make posts about the alpha kids being friends and doing stuff together and someone went through my entire blog tagging all of these as "alphacule" for no reason. i'll draw dirk and hal literally just looking at each other and someone will tag it as dirkhal. girl they're just looking at each other. seeing someone liveblog collide and they go "did anyone else think dirk and dave should've kissed >_<??" no i actually don't think they would do that. it's so dark in here

not 2 mention the parallels that can be drawn between dirk/hal's perception of their relationship with jake being this kind of... Based on my perceptions, based on my opinions, based on my expiriences! :] Nothing directed to anyone in particular.

If you have x-ship as your OTP, this is how I see your "category" VERY generally, let's say.

Johnkat / Communism shippers

I don't even ship Johnkat, but y'all are the sweetest people out there?? The chillest people ever. Like, if they asked me with what shipper I would spend ten hours trip with, it'd be a Johnkat shipper.

Davejade / Spacetime shippers

LITERALLY the same as Johnkat, but y'all are also so fucking talented too?? Any art skill possible (traditional, digital, animation, 3D, paper puppet, etc) Y'ALL CAN DO THAT!!! How do y'all even exist!? 😭

Dirkjake / Pumpkin shippers

There are two types of Pumpkin shippers though.

Hard to find people who have Rosemary as primary ship, since they're established in canon, so people ship them in the background because it makes sense and they're actually a thing.

Having to physically and mentally restrain myself from going insane when someone says they don't like dirkjake because JAKE was mean to Dirk. THEIR RELATIONSHIP FAILED BECAUSE THEY BOTH WERE FUCKED UP.

Acting like Dirk was 100% a victim of Jake in their relationship is abysmal reading comprehension. They both fucked up. Do you hear me. It was both of their faults. Jake's got the very on brand "if I ignore my problems they'll go away" and therefore he failed to communicate to Dirk that he wanted more alone time, all while complaining to Jane all the time. Dirk was desperate for a relationship with Jake, and pushed for them to be into a relationship that they both were not ready for because he was and is incredibly lonely. Idk idk acting like Jake is more at fault or completely at fault for their breakup is kind of silly.

They're 16 year old, maladjusted, lonely children who had to raise themselves and developed vastly different ways to cope with that loneliness. They love each other but lack the skills to express it in a healthy way, both putting up a facade in fear that the friends they love so much will no longer want them if they showed their true selves, because they're messy and raw and care too much

Dirk thinks he's a monster who has to hold himself back otherwise hes bound to hurt people that he loves, and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy- he hurts someone and takes it as confirmation that he's evil, while Jake is terrified of disappointing people to the point that he refuses to acknowledge when there are problems in fear of being blamed, not wanting to bare responsibility for /anything/ both good and bad in case people expect too much of him and dislike him when he fails to measure up. This is bound to go wrong since neither of them can actually effectively communicate their needs.

I think after the events of Act 6, the character that makes the most sense to me for Dave to end up with is Jake. And I mean this in a CANON! IT FITS THE STORY AND THE CHARACTERS! Kind of way. Not just in a shippers be shipping kind of way. I think they would understand each other. They both would need to grow and mature a bit to make their relationship work, and I think they would care so much about making it work that they would.

Jake liked to travel around as grandpa harley. He liked to go explore, pilot ships, adventure. Dave seemed to like just keeping to himself, and do his own thing, join others sometimes. Jake and Dave would both go their separate ways and come back to each other like no time had even pasted by. They have this opposites attract thing about them but at the same time they are both actually sensitive. Maybe more like two sides of the same coin

I think i see the the "splitting and then coming back like no time has passed at all" applying moreso to John and Jake than it does Jake and Dave. Dave at heart seeks attention, and even if their bond is superficial at most, I can definitely see him going from "Idgaf about jake english" to "oops! i gaf about jake english" and feeling impacted when Jake starts ignoring him.

In all realness. it wouldnt work longterm. You said it, Dave just sort of likes keeping to himself and works best when someone is ordering him around to do things. Jake however is someone who needs to be constantly enriched by his surroundings to sustain interest, without it becoming too suffocating. When Jake realises Dave will just follow along with what Jakes doing without necessarily challenging or really adding to it, he'll get bored and ditch Dave, or try to aggravate Dave into leaving FOR him because god forbid he communicates.

Hence why Dirkjake technically "work" in the way that Dirk will continue to push Jake back and Jake will continue to bite back because if there's one thing that Dirk and Jake like it's conflict and combat on their own terms due to how engaging and direct it is.

Dave and Jake are both super immature and refuse to really change in my eyes. Like yes, they're aware of their flaws. But being self aware that you're a jackass doesn't always equal that you stop being a jackass. And I don't think they'd work longterm because they recognise the other person is intolerable and if there's anything Jake really fears its being seen as a person.

HOWEVER. There is I guess a silver lining? Ish? I'd see it as they'd feel comfortable telling the other deep secrets or personal reflections on their self through a haze of vices, not because they really trust the other or feel deeply connected, but because THEY DONT CARE WHAT THE OTHER THINKS OF THEM AT ALL. They are not really anything to each other. "The only reason i trust you with my secrets is because i dont care that much about what you have to say or what you do with it because youre just as bad as me and not in a way i pity you but i recognise my aspects in you and also youre not connected to my other friends in a way i care for. We could entertain each other but one of us is going to start biting and the others going to get hurt and thats fine."

Their asses are not fixing each other. They're aware they both suck. This means they're also aware the possibility of sustaining a relationship longterm is low. But there is some comfort, in people that look like your best friend but not really and with none of the quirks that resigns their best friends to the best friend role.

Hal ships as a whole are so good !!!!!!

After a meaningful character arc where Hal gets more comfortable with being an AI, a body becomes less of a priority for him. As a result, he trolls Dirk by making the most minor of changes to his requested body. By the time the finished model is complete, a decade has passed. Dirk pretends he is So Done, but nah. Its an enjoyable, low-urgency project for them.

On the other, much deader hand, Dirkhal + unwilling robotification go hand in hand. Dirk already struggles with his sense of self so much it may as well happen.

Fun canon divergence for this ship too! What if Hal somehow manages to kill the condense. What then? Humanity is still dead, but Dirk and Roxy don't have to live in fear for the first time. A slow-burn could just happen from there.

Not to bring Dirkjake too much into this, but I could totally see Hal using Dirk's feelings to get attention. "Hey, you should practise your upcoming Important Conversation with Jake with me first. I'm juuuuust like the real thing."

It'd be so cool if Dirk were to meet alternate Hals that were obsessed with him in a more overly romantic way. Building his own boyfriend would be the ultimate way to achieve his toxic need for control, at the risk of completely disconnecting himself from his humanity. The implications for his arc would be <3 TLDR I could write about 5 different character studies for them, and perhaps did. (Also I did get your other ask and will awnser it! It'll probably take me a sec though since Equi is... hard for me to write. >:) )

immediately starting with the hardest question, oh god ;w; TBH the lame answer is that i like all of them for different reasons. the real answer is that i like aoba the best out of every character oops oh well. the actual answer is, idk, koujaku maybe (ur propaganda has been incredibly powerful) though i also find ren absolutely hysterical on multiple levels. tfw your soulmate who is both you and also your dog is put into your long lost twin brother's body, presumably so you can fuck irl instead of in your mind palace beach flashback. insanity.

possibly biased since this was the first (good) ending i got, but probably clear's, if only because i think it's batshit that it's even considered a good ending at all. for context, i stumbled across clear's route on my first playthru out of pure chance, not really trying for anyone specific, and accidentally got the bad ending first 👍 so that was great, but THEN i immediately went back to get the good ending and the fact that they have the AUDACITY to call fucking your robot boyfriend to DEATH a good ending is. i don't have the words to describe that emotion. yeah okay fine it's not getting all your limbs cut off but pul-lease, the fact that they are so visceral in describing his skin flaking off WHILE his cock is inside him makes me feel like chewing glass oh my god

hmm i actually really like noiz's second bad ending (the pixel game one) :3c again specifically because it's referred to as a Bad ending and also the "comfortable world," where everything is just the same old shit over and over again forever. there's legitimately some interesting philosophy underpinning a lot of DMMD, especially in the true route w/ all the sei shit-- it seems like they're pushing back against a very particular kind of buddhist philosophy about the value of letting go of desires (?? not only an idea in buddhism tbh, this also shows up in some daoism + greek stoic stuff + hinduism, like i'm pretty sure there's a famous section of the bhagavad gita where krishna specifically advocates a similar idea-- apologies, i'm not familiar enough w/ all the source material to know what exactly which thing DMMD is trying to criticize, if they're getting that specific at all), which is like weirdly perfect for a game largely based around constant gay sex ahahahhaha (note as well the sanskrit om symbols plastered across all of toue's endgame rhyme world). i also just love all the glitchy shit at the end of noiz's route, it feels Very fitting for the character.

+ not the question, but least favorite bad ending is probably mink's, if only cuz it feels incredibly anticlimactic after Everything Else. like the decapitation thing isn't bad but. eh. maybe i'm just desensitized after all the dirkjake but c'monnnnnnnnn, mink can be worse. i know he can. i believe in him <3

personal headcanon time 😦 iiii recognize that andrew hussie probably did not sit down and say "im going to write all of these characters as aromantic" but i like to interpret them in that way based on things they say and do in the text as well as their roles within the narrative. obligatory disclaimer Sorry if i'm misinterpreting the text i hope this all makes sense

john: aromantic, does not want to be in a romantic relationship. the type to date someone for 1 week in high school if someone asks them out

jake: somewhere on the aro spectrum, perpetually on-and-off-and-on-again with dirk with random flings in between. wants to be in a relationship with dirk (until she doesn't) but doesn't feel as strongly as dirk does. it's complicated (obligatory "i think that the line about wanting to be alone forever is born more out of self loathing and instinct to isolate rather than genuine lack of desire to be in a relationship" this reading is based on other things)

aradia: aromantic, does not want to be in a romantic relationship unless it's in a "i want to play pretend with a random person for two months for fun" kind of way (not what was going on with sollux when they were 8), chooses to genuinely spend a significant portion of her life with certain people she's close to

karkat: aromantic. cannot distinguish platonic affection for friends from romantic attraction. gets stuck in situationship purgatory. pulling his hair out wondering when he's going to start feeling the same way people do in love songs
