kinktober retrospective

it's harder to write to kinks than i thought??? or rather, there aren't that many kinks that i'm that interested in writing?? how shameful. in future years i will endeavour to be less vanilla.

was getting into fights with myself constantly about what qualifies as "kink" which lead to my reading john money's "lovemaps" and a few other clinical pieces on the subject.

it was a good way to knock out ideas i'd had that had been languishing as WIPs forever, or worse, just in my brain. lbr i was never going to write the multichapter BJ/Peg bondage fic, it's out now as a 3K word ficlet, the way it had to be if it was ever going to be written

on that note - short stories are so fun and some stories are better suited to a smaller wordcount. underutilized formats include: the two-parter and the single/double/triple drabble that used to be popular. i like marathon smut as much as the next person but realistically, shorter formats are very practical for porn? do we not all appreciate a quickie on days when we just don't have the time? gonna start calling these short, smutty ficlets: quicklets

i'm bad at writing to prompts!!! brain refuses to stay on topic. buildup makes smut better in my opinion but I always end up with 2K words of buildup and 1K words of smut and i would love if that ratio is reversed. next time i think i will put in place some kind of visual reminder like *BUILDUP ENDS HERE* so that I remember where...

oh man. part way through i started becoming very curious about ~the science of pornography~ glorious beast, i want to understand you. but the word "pornography" is so politicized, you can barely study it as a field. typed the word "pornography" into goodreads and the first 10 pages are mostly anti-porn or anti-sex-work puritan propaganda. if you actually want to learn about pornography (not simply how to defeat it in combat) you cannot even refer to it by name. you instead have to use words like "erotica" or "erotic literature" which - i don't have anything against the words themselves and technically what i'm doing is "erotica" but i am so allergic to the hierarchy of designated "high art" vs "low art" and i have no interest in joining the ranks of "high art", but it's easy to get into ones head about self-indulgent fanfiction and start quietly thinking of it as "erotica"

something to be said about "fun" as a motivator. i read a quote once from neil gaiman where he said "i don't enjoy writing but i enjoy having written" and i think there is definitely some truth to that but also i have totally experienced vibrant joy while writing and at some point i'd like to examine how i come to that exactly... although "examining" the thing seems counterintuitive to replicating. perhaps it just is. the pieces i enjoyed writing the most were hawktrapollie spitroasting (i also had huge amounts of fun writing the 12K smutfic i did for them back in january of this year so maybe it's just that i enjoy that ship a lot) and the ginger/trapper pegging piece. interestingly, though they are my #1 OTP, I can't say I've ever come anywhere close to having the same amount of fun writing trapper/hawkeye, although I rarely find them to be a slog...

the piece that caused me the greatest difficulty was BJ/Peg. probably because it (TMI, perhaps!) does not turn me on at all. I was just interested in getting a point across, and I'm glad I did. but the whole time I was like "eh" about it. I think these kinds of writing exercises are important, but I wonder if I should have strived to find some kind of angle of enjoyment. actually, here's where mr. gaiman's point really applies... I'm glad I wrote it, but I did not enjoy writing it.

Also, the first US IKEA opened in 1985 in Pennsylvania but I couldn’t find when or where others opened—this fic takes place sometime in the early ‘90s, established relationship but they’ve just moved into their first apartment together and it’s somewhere close enough to an IKEA that existed at the time XD

All the pieces are laid out on the rug. Robin had pulled everything out of the box the moment Chrissy left the apartment, checked and double-checked (and triple-checked) that everything was there, and now she just has to put it together. Shouldn’t be too hard right? It’s only a bookcase.

(For their books. Not just Chrissy’s books, not just Robin’s books, but theirs. And their knick-knacks and mementos and other things too. No roommates’ things cluttering the shelf, either, just theirs. Theirs.)

Giddiness rises up and she tries to push it away—she’s got a bookcase to build—and picks up the instruction leaflet. It’s all pictures. Pictures are good. She thinks. At least it’s not in Swedish, not that Robin thought it would be. That would be weird. Why would they sell something with Swedish instructions in America?

Robin twirls her hair around her finger.

There’s already a little tightness in her chest, which is stupid, because it’s just a bookcase and she hasn’t even started. But she wants to surprise Chrissy and she wants it to be perfect. Or at least not fall apart. Maybe she should call Steve? He’d offered to put it together for them but they wanted to do it themselves.

No, she hasn’t even started. She has fought monsters from another dimension and survived, she can put together a bookcase.

Purrley MacLaine circles her feet and Robin bends down to scoop her up. “Hey, wanna help me build this?” She waves the instructions.

A ginger paw swipes at them and Robin waggles the paper a little, then holds it out of reach before the claws come out. Miss MacLaine reaches for the paper, giving Robin an indignant look when she can’t get to it.

“Sorry, I need these.”

With that, her would-be helper jumps down from the cradle of Robin’s arms and trots away.

“Remember who feeds you!” Robin calls out, but Purrley has already jumped into one of the empty boxes littering the room, only her tail to be seen. Robin sighs and looks back to the paper. “Okay, going to put together a bookcase. I can do this.” She scans the pieces on the rug, biting her lip, and finds the first one she needs.

“This is going to be a cinch.”

It’s not long before Robin realizes she may have overestimated her flatpack putting together abilities. Give her monsters from another dimension any day. Well, maybe not, but this is ridiculous.

“I think I’d understand this better if it was in Swedish.”

There are more of the little wooden doohickeys than there should be and not enough of the other doohickeys so she can’t put the top shelf on and one of the doohickeys went all the way in and then a bit of the shelf cracked when she was tightening another thing and the thingamabob won’t go into the whatchamacallit and she nearly dropped the side on herself when she was turning it around the right way it and—

“Argh.”

She sits on the floor, tries not to scream, and flops back. It’s too early to admit defeat, but she needs to regroup. Just for a moment.

Twenty minutes later, the door opens and closes, and sneakered feet slap over the mostly bare floors. Robin is still on the floor regrouping. The footsteps stop by her head.

“Hey, babe, why are you on the floor?”

Robin opens one eye, then the other. Chrissy is crouching by her head, an amused tilt to her lips. “I was building the bookcase.”

“Oh, yeah, the floor bookcase. Of course.”

“I had to regroup.” Robin spreads her arms out to either side. “The instructions make no sense and there are too many pieces and it’s taller than I thought it would be and it nearly fell on me.”

Chrissy’s brow furrows and soft, warm hands cup Robin’s face. “Did you hurt yourself?”

“No. It’s just…stupid.” Robin huffs and curls a hand around Chrissy’s wrist, leaning into the warmth of her palm. “It’s a bookcase, why is it so hard?”

“Because you didn’t wait for me?”

“I wanted to surprise you.”

A smile spreads over Chrissy’s face—that bright one that always takes Robin’s breath away—and she moves around so she’s standing over Robin and holds out a hand. “C’mon,” she says, “let’s do it together.”

Robin takes Chrissy’s hand and lets herself be pulled to her feet. “Maybe we should get some help?”

“Nope, we’ve got this.”

“Okay,” Robin says and takes a deep breath.

Chrissy claps her hands together. “Right,” she says, “show me what we’ve got.”

Robin waves at the few pieces she’s managed to put together. She nudges it with her foot and says, “This is it, so far,” and then the whole thing lists to the side.

“Oh, we can put that back…” Chrissy trails off as the pieces fall apart, landing with a soft thwack. She winces. “Hey, that’s okay! No place to start from like the beginning, huh?”

The relentless optimism might be annoying coming from anyone else but, when it’s Chrissy, Robin can’t help but smile. “Like Julie Andrews said, it’s a very good place to start.”

“That’s the spirit.” Chrissy winks. She settles her hands on her hips and says, “Let’s get to it.”

They kneel down, either side of the pieces laid out, and Chrissy picks up the instructions. “Okay, hand me that,” she says and they start working.

It’s almost fun—almost—with the two of them putting the bookcase together…together. She still kind of wishes they’d taken Steve up on his offer because it is so tedious, but then she thinks about how this is their first home, just the two of them—well, three of them—and maybe it’s only a plain bookcase, but it’s theirs and they’re making it together.

Purrley MacLaine comes sniffing around a few times, pawing at the dowels—the little wooden doohickeys Robin thought she had too many of—and generally getting in the way but being too adorable for either Robin or Chrissy to move her.

“Hand me one of those.” Chrissy waves at the pile of screws, their hands brushing when Robin hands one over, and sets to work. A few moments later she says, “There,” with a satisfied smile. “Help me lift it?”

Together, they get the bookcase upright; it doesn’t wobble or lean to the side or fall apart. It stands there, exactly like a bookcase should.

Robin blinks. “Wait. Did we do it?”

“We did it.” Chrissy pumps her hands in the air. “Go team!” She slides an arm around Robin’s waist, squeezing gently, and then says, “Uh, is the back meant to be the same color as the rest?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Well, I hate to break the bad news,” Chrissy says, pointing at the bookcase, “but I think we put it on backward.”

Robin stares at it a moment, unseeing, and then it’s all too clear. The backing is light brown, not white like the rest. “No, no, no! We nearly had it!”

“We can take it off and do it again.”

Robin groans and lets her head drop back and says, “Yeah, okay,” but she really doesn’t want to.

“Or”—Chrissy slides her arm from around Robin’s waist and grabs Robin’s hand, swinging it between them—“we could leave it?”

“But it’s all wrong.”

“You’re creative, we can…decorate it.” Chrissy raises her brows. “Right?”

Robin chews on her lip. It would have been easier to decorate it before but she really doesn’t want to undo it and put it back on the right way. “Okay, yeah, that sounds good.”

“Go team!” Chrissy repeats, lifting both her and Robin’s hands in the air in victory.

Robin sighs—happily this time—and waves their hands. “Yeah,” she says, letting their hands drop and resting her head on top of Chrissy’s, “Go team.”

Terrie

I can see Terrie doing a double degree in agriculture and undergraduate medicine

He'd definitely run on pure caffeine with a triple shot of energy drinks just to keep themselves moving

Lives in the campus dorms

Plants EVERYWHERE. Or, at least on their side of the dorm.

She'd grow herbs primarily for medical use and name them different things

For example, Basil would be Bailey, Cinnamon would be Cindy and Ginger would be named Gallagher

Would definitely talk to them when their alone

Out of the whole group, Terrie is the most likely to stay indoors.

Would have those really aesthetic notes with a range of green shades

She'd also have multiple binders for her subjects and for her independent studies

Terrie would also study herbal medicine and regularly concoct their own homemade remedies

Also brews their own teas

Julius

She'd study hospitality relating to food and beverages

Is the one to organise study sessions for the group

She'd also frequently go to the campus' gym at least once every week

She and Jørgen would definitely be gym bros

Except they'd only talk to each other when deemed necessary, instead letting their actions convey their words

She'd also job around the campus late out at night whenever she can

I can imagine she'd use exercising as a coping mechanism for stress or worry

Julius also has a girlfriend in this AU, although she goes to another college

She'd also be a part of the martial arts club because I said so

He'd take a few courses in veterinary science

Rides his skateboard around campus

He'd be the one who stays up late at night to complete assignments at the last minute

Definitely goes out the parties at night, with the company of Livy and Fausta

And with that, he's usually the first to get drunk

He's a lightweight, much to his chagrin

Although, he doesn't get much of a hangover unlike the others

I guess that makes up for his inability to withstand alcohol LMAO

He and Livy would totally hold competitions of who gets the higher grade

The loser would have to go out and have to buy the winner snacks

And after that, they'd both watch a movie or game as they feast on the snacks

That being said, Livy and Torald are definitely the gamers in the group

Livy would study agriculture, as well as photography on the side

Though, after getting the degrees she'd move back home and take care of the family farm

She'd also be a part of the martial arts club as a fun side hobby

Because of her small stature, most members underestimate her which causes her to feel great complacency when she flips them over her shoulder

Like Torald, she's also completing assignments on the night it's due

Though the next day they're both laughing about it in a cafe located just outside the campus' main buildings

I can see her growing and selling fruits as a lil side business

That being said, she and Torald are probably the closest

Mostly because their backgrounds are one of the same

Oh, and when the group meets up for study sessions she always gets Terrie a present and gives much-appreciated advice on his plants

Fausta

She'd definitely get a degree in fashion designs

Fausta would absolutely have an Instagram account where she posts images of her creations and of her friends

Dresses in fashion brands and clothes that she made only

And she knows how to style them accurately, making it easy on the eyes and not blatant bragging about her wealth

I feel like she'd dress mostly in whites, greys and light beiges

Ooh, and silver jewellery, like rings and bracelets

She's totally a popular girl in her class, raking in at least 5 confessions each week

Having said that, I don't think she'd be looking for a relationship anytime soon

Fausta would totally be a music nerd

I can imagine she can play multiple instruments, like the violin, piano and guitar

Achilles, Come Down would totally be the type of music that she'd listen to regularly

She'd also be able to do ballet, having done it when she was a child

I feel like she and Julius would be the closest about of the group

She's like the one who looks over the group

While also providing them with heaps of gossip!

He'd be a Youth Services Administration Major

Is definitely a part of the football club, although he's usually benched

I can also imagine him being part of the drama club

He'd also volunteer at various charities and academy programs

I feel like he'd be the most popular in the college due to him helping basically anyone with tasks

Would arrive at class 15 minutes early and mull over poorly written notes taken from the previous lesson

Who in aot is vaccinated and who isn't in my opinion

Had this idea because I'm in the medical field

Warnings: just a little bit of shade to some

Armin: this educated king is triple vaccinated. He was suspicious at the beginning but he's a strong believer of the power of science. He gets his flu shots as well every year just to be sure. Wears a surgical mask and a KN mask on top

Mikasa: another triple vaccinated person. She wasn't really bothered by everyone's comments on the topic so she just does what she believes (armin might influenced her a little) wears cute pink masks or masks with minimalistic designs

Eren: sooo Mikasa, Eren and Armin went together to get the first dose so they can have each others comfort more like eren needed it more. He got the first dose but he forgot about the second one and he can't be arsed to get it. Too much effort for the lazy boy. I have to add that he wears the mask under his nose

Jean: double vaccinated and he wears only the black masks. Everything else ruins his aesthetic

Connie: double vaccinated. I mean he loves his mum so he wouldn't risk getting her sick just because he has a wild life

Sasha: she got double vaccinated just because her besties did. She got scared when people said that when you get too sick with covid you lose your taste

Levi: double vaccinated because everyone was bothering the poor man by telling him when is he going to get vaccinated. He got sick of them so he went and did it so they can shut up

Erwin: double vaccinated BUT very suspicious. He asked a certain amount of people and their symptoms. Talked to several doctors about it. Even in the room before the nurse jabbed him, he asked annoying questions. The doctors and nurses hated him

Hange: vaccinated in a sense. They jabbed themselves with their vaccine that they made and called it a day. Nothing is better when you do something on your own

Zeke: not vaccinated. He doesn't let anyone near him with a syringe. Lowkey afraid of them. He is into Facebook groupchats that talk about the side effects of covid and how they can affect your dna and shit. He has a big amount of people who support him. His bad breath doesn't let him wear a mask

Floch: anti vaccination kind of guy. Doesn't care. If you bring that up he'll make fun of you for believing that covid exists. Won't wear a mask unless he's forced violently

Annie: not vaccinated. She doesn't trust the government and all the shit they do. She believes in home remedies. Chamomile and ginger tea on the go. Eats garlic to get rid of the toxins as well

Porco: vaccinated but secretly. He believes vaccination is for the weak but he did it anyway

Reiner: double vaccinated. He gets sick easily so he had to. Wasn't opposed to it though

Anxiety was a fun thing to deal with sometimes. You know - like when you triple checked the details of the test date you had scheduled today. You pressed a hand to your chest as you woke your phone. Eyes were glued to the pin on the map that your date, Hinata Shoyo: Rental Boyfriend, put on it. You thought maybe, just maybe, he canceled last minute or after seeing your face IRL. A chill ran through you and you muttered to no one in particular, “God, how embarrassing would that be…”

  As you swiped through the app, you pat all around your neck, your cheek, your collarbone in a few nervous motions. Sure, you knew the area. Sure, you went out a few times to sketch the roads for a comic or two. But as you stood, cool fingers drumming nervously along your skin, it all felt unfamiliar.

  A voice cried your name out, jolting your attention away from insecurity for a moment. You squinted, thinking you misheard. The wind! That’s all it was. Just as you were about to check your phone for the nth time, you caught a glimpse of tangerine. Through the hoard of 9-5ers, five fingers raised in a wave until a broad shoulder shimmied its way through the crowd.

“H-Hinata?” His name came out a lot more hushed than you intended and you could feel the heat of your cheeks. Oh no. He’s cute. Duh. You knew he was. He had a profile picture and some extra pics that you and your friend scrolled through the night prior. One caught your eye in particular; it was with a dog that wasn’t his according to the caption (and the added note of ‘but imma get a big boi some day’’). There was another with a guy with short black hair. They all radiated a type of warmth and welcome to them even if those around him seemed ready to punch a wall - a trait not missed out on in person.

  He beamed, taking your hand in his as though it were as natural as the sun shining, “Hey babe!”

  The words put a bar in the cogs of your mind, stopping all rational thought.  Babe. Babe?! Oh fuck. I’m babe! Oh wait. Yeah that’s right. You rented him to be your boyfriend. It’s supposed to be natural. You scolded yourself for forgetting that simple fact. 

Hinata laced his fingers through yours and you could feel the slight dampness of his palm. The thought that he may be as nervous as you put you slightly at ease. It would make sense as he didn’t have any reviews or ratings or anything. He was new! A beta-boyfriend babe!

  It took a moment or two for you to realize that not only was he guiding you down the sidewalk, but you had been staring at nothing but your shoes the entire way there. Shyly, you apologized. 

  “For what, babe? Oh! Wait! I didn’t get to mention yet,” Bright eyes burned with excitement as they tilted over his shoulder, “That’s a cute dress!” He genuinely thought so, too. Trying to act all coupl-y with a stranger was definitely weird, but, like anything he tried, he wanted to put his best effort in. Hinata wasn’t sure on what to expect, truthfully. When looking at your profile after the booking was made, he was caught off guard by how cute you were. In person seemed even worse. Better? Hell if he knew.

  As a lanky waiter shuffled you both into a booth, you were off put by your boyfriend slipping in next to you. Right smack dab next to you. Thigh touching thigh and the heat of his sent a shiver up your spine. You placed a hand on your chest again and spent more time reading a menu than you thought you ever had before.

  Hinata’s expression fell thoughtfully as he saw the slight shake in your slender digits and the way your teeth gnashed at your lower lip. He tilted his head with a small laugh and a nudge to your ribs with his elbow. The corners of his mouth piquing to such a point you could practically feel the mischievousness from it, “Play along, ‘kay? Kay?”

  Suspiciously, you peaked over the top of the menu roof you made with a nod. As the waiter returned, a strong muscled arm wrapped around your shoulder and snuggled you close. Mouth falling into an ajar ‘o’, your confusion was as palpable as his joy, “It’s my girlfriend’s birthday today! You guys got some cake, maybe a candle or OOOH a song?”

  “Hinata!” You smacked his head with the menu, “It’s n-“

  He brought a finger to his lips to silent-shush you, lashes dipping in a wink. You smiled pleasantly, yet awkwardly at the waiter and in the least convincing tone, chimed,  “It’s my birthday. Yaaay.”

  “See! How could you deny that!” His sheer and pointed enthusiasm made up for your lack thereof.

  The waiter, not buying any of it but needing the tips to pay his rent, congratulated you before excusing himself. Ten minutes later, two others trailed behind him singing a specialty birthday tune. In their hands rested the most delicious looking chocolate cake. To say you inhaled that thing would be an understatement. It was creamy, rich, everything you could’ve wanted in a cake.

  “Take a bite!” You offered a forkful to your date, one hand below to catch the droppings. Obliging gleefully, he did.

  “‘m pwetty bad wif dates but I saw you like fweets!” The words came between chews, and he gestured here and there as he swallowed, “Glad you liked it cause we got five more restaurants to try!”

  “Excuse me?!”

  And just like that, Hinata whisked you from one restaurant to another. Each one was slightly ritzier than the last and with each one, he could see the tense scrunch of your shoulders melt away. 

He made you feel safe and you started to joke with him more openly, smile more frequently, and sarcastically quip at him. He liked the way you smacked his arm every time he called the waiters over too dramatically. He liked the way you acted surprised they’d come around the corner with cakes and songs. You managed to melt his heart with the cutest ‘Oh! Babe!’ whenever he tried to genuinely surprise you. He adored watching your eyes light up whenever you got a taste of each decadent sweet. It would be an outright lie to deny that you feeding him made his heart flutter, too.

  You clung to Hinata’s arm, cheek resting heavily on bicep as your stomach decided to churn all the sugar you ate like it was a tilt-a-whirl. He patted your hand, thinking you were just trying to be cute, “So, what made you want to rent someone?” 

  The night sky took over the afternoon sun. Tiredly, you gazed up to your ‘boyfriend’, letting a moment of silence occupy the time it took to get over the small wave of nausea, “This is… embarrassing.” You chuckled softly, letting your fingers fall onto your neck, “I uh… never dated someone before. I have a date set up and got so anxious I almost canceled three times. I really want to put myself out there though and be more comfortable.“

  “Is that why you were so red?! I thought I was meeting a cherry when I saw you! All like –“ His hands flew to his cheeks in a damn near perfect imitation of you and your voice, “-i-i-it’s n-n-ot m-my-“ before he could stutter the rest out, you interrupted with a loud and embarrassed groan. His laugh hissed passed teeth, “It was cute! You’re adorable, ya know?” The words slipped out so naturally and with such warmth that you wondered where the act was put down and where it was picked back up.

  “As I was saying,” you jested with a light hearted eye roll, “My friend was really worried about me. I mean, it’s not often you’re a date-virgin in your twenties.”

  Hinata pursed his lips, thinking about it, “Ya know, maybe it is weird - ” You felt your heart stop and your comfort crack just slightly. You probably would have laughed had it not been for the wave of heat then ice that swept over you, “- that someone as… as…” His lips pursed as he tried to find a word. Your anxiety built with each delayed second. In a grand gesture, his arms swang back, “WH’BAM as you never got asked out before!” Despite your death grip on him, the ginger still managed to hop on cue, “’sides! You got a pretty good friend looking after you!”

  “Heh,” You laughed, “Guess you’re right, but wh’bam?”

  “It just makes sense!” He slapped your hand a few times with the soft palm of his, “Okay okay! Now, we’re going to that one!” A finger pointed to a fancy black double door. 

  “Hinata I-“ You began to protest, feeling your palms dampen and your stomach curdle. 

  “Don’t worry about price! I got it!” He tugged at your arm.

  “N-no, We need to-“

  “You’ve been having such a good time! We can do one more!”

  “Just come over h-here-“

  “This one has the best cake from what I read! It’s not too expensiiiiiiive.”

  The end of his sentence tumbled out of his mouth like the night’s worth of cake and frosting tumbled out of your gut. Directly onto the ground. And on the expensive nude heels your friend leant you. And on Hinata’s own pricy looking sneakers.

  There was a moment of silence as you lit the coffin of your pride and watched it sail away into the ocean. (Goodbye sweet trait, it was nice while it lasted. Rest in Pieces.)

  Hinata blinked. The event registered in his squirrel brain like a dial up modem. She just threw up. It’s on my shoe. It’s on her shoe. OH NO I MADE HER THROW UP! Red alerts blared as he whipped his head around, making the biggest display of ‘nothing to see here’ that could’ve been humanly possible. All too easily, he slid an arm under your knees and scurried around for a place to sit. It took about ten minutes for him to find a bench on an empty walkway. He sat you down and patted your head with long, sweet strokes. Each pat, while good natured, went unnoticed as your intestines tried to murder you in cold blood.

  Hinata sprinted for the convenience store and bought the first couple of antacids he could find, along with some anti-nausea medication and water. A small bit of sweat broke out along his brow as he dashed back to you. Agile as a leaf in the wind, he squatted right in front of you, hurriedly dumped everything out of the double-bagged plastic bags to give to you. He stuttered out his menu of medications and you down some of them with water.

  “Hey, heeey,” his gentle voice cooed to you, both hands rubbing your arms in soothing motions (a little roughly, but he’s trying), “It’s okay, you’re okay, you don’t need to cry!” You waved a hand, lips parted as you waited for another wave to hit which never came. You thought he’d make fun of you, laugh in your face about how pathetic this was, but it never came. For some reason that made you even more emotional. He was just a rental boyfriend. He didn’t need to deal with this. Instead of quitting then and there, Hinata took a seat right next to you and pulled you to his chest. Your back flinched reflexively as a calloused hand rubbed calming circles along it. He started talking about a time he was at a volleyball game and had the nervous-shits so bad he nearly had to sit out.

  “That’s… disgusting,” The words came out as a half-laugh, half-cry. You wiped your eyes, ignoring the makeup now dripping down your face from sweat and tears.

  “You’re telling me! Tanaka called me ‘little-shits’ for two months after that!” His laugh was contagious, spreading warmth through your fingertips and toes. It was rare to meet someone who had such a natural talent to make you feel so wholly accepted.

  After about 10 minutes, the medication began to fully settle your stomach. The bag was tossed into a stray trash can. Hinata had barely even realized that his chin was perched on the crown of your head as he talked about other embarrassing stories (including the time he got pegged in the nuts during training camp). The warmth of you in his hold simply belonged and he didn’t want to let go just yet.

  “Thank you,” you peered up at him with eyes so pretty and a smile so kind he wanted to kiss it then and there.

  “For what?” His head tilted again. If he were a puppy, his ears would flop with each tilt.

  “Being so sweet to me for my first trial date. Even if it’s your job, you really went above and beyond. And uh…you know-” You kicked your shoe to his.

  The athlete ruffled his hair, feeling a blush creep to his cheeks and ears at the thought of being your first date, “Don’t need to thank me for it! I had a blast! You’re pretty warm too!”

  “Thanks?” You sputtered a small laugh before checking your phone and the time. It was nearly up. As per request, a text of your location was sent to the friend who started it all.

  For a while, you rested in Hinata’s hold, savoring the rich batter of comfort and calm it baked you in. He chattered on about this and that, exchanging a remark here and there when you poked fun. 

Once you pulled away from him, he couldn’t help but miss the feel of your mold on the palm of his hand like a volleyball right at the precipice – right in his reach. You checked your violently buzzing phone, confirming the spot where you were sitting to your friend. 

“Who was that?” Hinata asked, a boyish hint of pouting sad laced underneath his natural curiosity.

“My friend,” you answered, popping another antacid in your mouth, “our time is up, so she’ll be here soon.”

 Those words were a bitter sound, one that reminded Hinata that this wasn’t real. This was a bet that he wanted to win. One that he secretly cursed. In all reality, he wanted to have fun and when he saw that you booked him, he didn’t know what to think. Dating wasn’t really his thing. He rarely had time to when it came to practice and had it not been for the bet, he probably wouldn’t have sought someone out at all, let alone someone as out of his league as you.

  The headlights of your friend's car came into view. Just as you went to take a step forward, a strong hand circled around your wrist. In a swift movement, you turned to look at the culprit. 

  “Just make sure to rent me again if you have some time, yeah?” Hinata’s smile held a hint of something you couldn’t identify. 

 Nevertheless, you returned the sentiment, “Of course!”

You parted with a long hug.

As the car pulled away, Hinata flicked through his phone. Once the dates were done, each point of contact would be deleted automatically. A reasonable company policy that felt like a sour punch to the gut.. A small twinge of sadness came over him, but he knew that if it was meant to be, you’d find your way to each other again. In the mean time…

  “Oh shut it!” You cried in false annoyance, “I threw up, can you believe that?!” Dramatically, she gasped, listening as you recounted the events of the boy who was the sun itself. Finalizing your long winded tale of cake-filled adventure, that same warmth spread across your chest, lapping small butterfly wings at your stomach, “I had a good time. I… definitely feel more comfortable with the idea of putting myself out there now.”

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

i don’t usually and i feel fucking awful about it. i don’t really leave comments either, but i’m getting better about that 🥺 i’m way better about answering asks, but even that’s hard sometimes because i don’t wanna put spoilers on people’s dashboards unintentionally. idk, i have a lot of anxiety surrounding that sort of stuff but i’m trying to do better! i’m challenging myself to respond to every single comment on chapter 1 of TLO 😤

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

oh boy. um, none of them? when i finish HIOP (i haven’t abandoned it, i’ve just been hella busy with TLO and life and stuff) it’ll have a similar sort of bittersweet ending as in TGP canon, but i don’t particularly like truly angsty endings. i honestly don’t know if i’ll ever write one. angst in a fic? yes, absolutely, tons of it, please. but i need a happy ending.

“Help Is Other People” is sort of a shameless/TGP crossover bc of characters & concepts, but it’s not exactly a “crossover” in the traditional sense? it’s probably the only one i’ll ever write bc it just happened to line up perfectly with the character journeys, it was never my intention to write a crossover because i personally don’t care for them lmao

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

shockingly enough, no. not in the comments or anything. i’ve had a few rude anons but their messages were written in such a way i knew it was a them-issue and i just happened to say/write something that they didn’t particularly like in that moment and became a target of their anger. if i ever did get a true hate comment, y’all would never know because i would never publish it & give them that sort of satisfaction, lmao. i mean, i might, if it was funny and i needed to make a point 👀

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

yes, sparingly. well, until TLO comes along 🤭 then “sparingly” will be replaced with “gratuitously” for a while, oops 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️ and all kinds, eventually. my only published stuff right now is awkward boyfriends content and TLO is…very different lmao

none, i will finish every WIP i ever start goddammit 😤😤😤 (this is more for me than anyone else)

i have a hard time gauging my own strengths, so here’s what people have told me in messages/comments before: thoughtful world-building, immersive and/or cinematic writing style, creative storylines. and i’ll agree with them bc i’m trying to be better about doing that 💛

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

much like in real life, i talk too much. my writing is often long-winded and rambling and it’s definitely something i’m working on. i also change a lot of shit last minute so maintaining consistency with small details is difficult for me sometimes, and i lose a lot of writing time to double-and-triple-checking every little stupid thing 😭

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

i think it’s a really interesting artistic choice to write a fic in one language and have pieces of dialogue in another language within the story - if i came across that in a fic, i’d be hitting google translate immediately because i’d be so curious - it could be interesting to hide a lil easter egg in a story that way 👀

— “omar can still remember it vividly. a pocket flashlight gripped in one hand, a paperback copy of stephen king’s it clutched in the other. mama would have spanked him with a chankla if she saw him with it, but he knew she was already sleeping for the night.” a big, biiiig horror fan.

— right when he was legally allowed to, omar got pennywise tattooed on his back. mama did hit him that time. he got a retweet from stephen king, so it was so worth it.

— found out he was, in fact, gayy at 14 when the boy he shared a tent with during boy scouts kissed him and he thought he liked it waaaaaaaaaaaay better than when his girlfriend kissed him.

— mama thought his piercings made him look ‘like [he] likes boys,” so that’s how he confessed he was, indeed, into boys.

a/n: why hello there, this so you guys can have something to read while i’m working on ch 5 of body. umm this is my first time writing angst so please give me any and all feedback! hope you enjoy :P

“You’ll come over?!”

You giggled, “yes, Shoyo. I’ll be there at 5.” You could hear your best friend squealing on the other end of the line, and you know he’s doing his little happy dance.

“Okay, I’ll get everything ready before then! See you, [y/n],’ then he hung up.

This night will be eventful.

You started to pack up your things, and as the time neared, you were double, triple checking you had everything you needed. “Toothbrush, toothpaste, pajamas, clothes, skincare,” you stopped for a second, a puzzled expression spreading across your face, “I feel like I’m missing something,” you thought aloud.

You checked your bag for the umpteenth time, and then it clicked, “ah, my charger. But where is it?” Looking around your room, you spotted it on your desk, “there you are.” You grabbed the wire and plug and placed it in your bag.

There was a soft knock at your door, and your aunt peeped her head in, “[y/n], are you ready to go?”

“Yes, I’ll be down in a minute,” you replied, to which she smiled then walked away. Grabbing your overnight bag and phone from off the bed, you rushed out.

Your aunt’s car pulled up in front of the Hinata Residence. The ginger’s eyes lit up upon seeing the familiar car.

You said goodbye to your aunt and got out of the car, immediately being bombarded by his monster-bear hug. “[y/n]! It feels like I haven’t seen you in forever,” he exclaimed.

“It’s only been a day, Sho,” you giggled.

“Yeah, that’s far too long,” you giggled and ruffled his hair; he groaned and pouted in response.

“Hello, Auntie!” Hinata beamed to your aunt.

“Hello, Shoyo-kun. You two have fun, and remember,”

“Don’t do stay up too late,” you and Hinata said in unison. “We know, we know.”

“Okay, bye, see you tomorrow,” she smiled and waved.

“Adios, love ya!” you yelled, and she drove off.

Hinata turned to you, animatedly, “so what do you want to do first?”

Hours have passed since you’ve arrived, and you’ve done a lot. Make a fort and watch movies in it, baked cookies- which came out pretty tasty, if you do say so yourself- hold a mini-concert, and play some volleyball.

“Draw four, draw four, draw four, I choose the color blue, reverse, reverse, skip, skip, skip, skip, draw two, draw two, wild, I pick yellow, reverse, skip, Uno, and Uno out!” Hinata shouted while throwing his last card, a yellow one, in the pile of cards between you two.

“Hey, you cheated! No fair,” you stuck your tongue out at him. He just mocked you and put his hands to his head while shaking them back and forth, “na-na-na boo-boo.”

“Cheater.”

“Sore loser.”

You two glared at each other, then burst out laughing. “Oh, God! You should’ve seen your face when I was putting the cards down, priceless!”

“Shut up. I’ll get you next time.”

“Said every loser ever.”

“Whatever, I’m gonna shower.” You said while standing up.

“Okay, I’ll go get us some more snacks.” He stood up and walked out of the room.

You grabbed your things then headed to the bathroom. You closed the door behind you and locked it. Sighing, you looked to the mirror and stared at your reflection. “Wow, I look like shit.” You scoffed. You undressed and stepped into the shower, turning the water on.

You were in the middle of washing your hair when the bathroom lights suddenly went out, leaving you standing in the darkness of the bathroom, water hitting you and shampoo running down your head.

You felt your chest tighten, the fear thwarting your lungs.

“Mommy! Daddy, please let me out. I’m scared!”

“You brought this on yourself. You know the consequences of your mistakes.”

You shook your head, trying to get the scarring memories out. It’s okay, Shoyo is here; I’m not alone. You quickly washed off the remaining suds of shampoo in your hair and shut the water off. Grabbing the towel, you dried yourself and now attempted to find your clothes. Hands patting the bathroom counter frantically, you couldn’t find your clothes. Shit. Shit. Shit! The childhood memories were threatening to crawl back into your mind, “no, please. Not now.”

After what seemed like ages, you found them, quickly putting them on and not caring if they’re inside-out.

The feeling in your chest tightened by the second the longer you were in the small, dark confines of the bathroom. You went to open the door, only for it to be locked.

It’s a simple thing, really: turning the small lock on the handle to unlock the door. But at that moment, you couldn’t think straight, heart beating a thousand miles per second. The memories slithered their way back into the forefront of your mind: the panic was consuming you whole.

“Daddy, that hurts.”

“Please don’t lock me in there.”

“Please let me out. It’s dark and scary. I can’t see.”

“Shut it before He gets you. He doesn’t like little brats like you. That go around thinking they can speak when not told to, that cry for the stupidest shit. You earned it, now suffer the consequences.”

A high-pitched shriek escaped from as you were rattling the doorknob and banging on the door.

Hinata jumped and dropped all the snacks he was holding to dart to you. “[y/n]?!”

“Please, please, please let me out!”

“Hey, [y/n], it’s okay. I’m going to get you out.” He reached to the top of the door frame, taking the key, unlocking the bathroom door. When he opened the door, he saw you by the tub in a sitting-up fetal position. He walked up to you, scooping you in his arms, and took you to his room to lay you on his bed.

Once in bed, he held you close to him, the side of your face pressed up against his chest. The soothing sound of his heartbeat calming your nerves. You shook in his grasp, the remnants of tears stinging your eyes.

He ran his fingers through your hair, his fingertips massaging your scalp, and with the other hand, he rubbed circles on your back. Hinata let out small words of comfort such as it’s okay, deep breaths, and I’m here.

Once he sees your nerves have calmed a little, he asks, “you want to talk about it?” You pause for a moment, debating whether or not you want to tell him why. After a few moments of thinking, you decided to tell him why.

Once you told him the gist of it, he kissed your forehead. “I’m sorry, bubs. You don’t have to worry. I’m right here, and I’ll take care of you.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

You both held your pinkies out, intertwining them, then pressed your thumbs together and kissed them to seal the promise. The two of you made eye contact while smiling at each other. His eyes were so beautiful with their chestnut-colored irises; they always held a sense of softness and love when looking at you, but there’s something else. Maybe comfort or happiness? No, that’s not it. There seems to be a glint of- lust, wait, what?

Hinata Shoyo, the boy who has been your childhood best friend: from toddlers to high schoolers. Who has been by your side through thick and thin. Who has experienced everything with you. Who has had a crush on you for as long as he can remember. But little did you know about it. Little did you know about the way his heart would ache a little when you would talk about a crush. Little did you know about the butterflies that gather in the pit of his stomach whenever he sees you. Little did you know about the ache in his heart when he would think about the possibility of there not being you and him. But he’s stuck by your side anyway. After all, you would do anything for the person you love, right? You would stick by their side no matter what endured. You would be there to comfort them when they need it most. You would be the shoulder to cry on, the sun on the rainy days. You would do anything in your power to see them smile- even if it means you will be hurt.

Hinata Shoyo’s eyes held a glint of lust for you. He craved to be the person you want the most, and for you to love him as he loves you, to stick by each other’s side for life. He longed to be the one standing at the end of the aisle, you walking up to the alter. He craved to have a home with you. He wanted so much but kept it all to himself. Why? Because he feared, no, he dreaded that you wouldn’t reciprocate his feelings and that it would ruin your guys’ friendship. He’s kept these wants, desires, to himself the whole time and all for the sake of keeping you: even if you’ll be nothing more than friends.

You both were scared of darkness. Your fear was of literal darkness. Hinata’s fear was of the darkness of his thoughts that would creep into his mind. April 2018 Highlights

Well, here goes another highlights post after my bonus trip over to New York and the McKittrick. Broke my twice a year rule but it was so worth it.

- All of the Happy Hours! Seriously, we had Manderley Happy Hours Monday- Friday and it was wonderful. 

- Meeting Calloway and experiencing his weirdness and eccentricity first hand. 

- Finding Molly’s Nurse off of the first lift and getting to spend time with one of my favourite performers in one of my favourite roles on my first show of the trip. 

- Having @everylittlenote come up to 5th (knowing that’s where I could be found) and whisper “Go to the Rep Bar after this”.

- Going down to High Street during Vertigo, refusing to believe that I may finally see the Hecate I’d been dying to see, standing across from Taxi’s and seeing Virginia’s Hecate walk through. I swear I gave myself whiplash with the double, triple take I did, 

- The way Virginia’s Hecate makes sure she makes eye contact with everyone during the cabaret and makes sure each individual person locks eyes with her. 

- The way she looks so elegant and majestic but eats like a pig. What a contrast!

- Having a tarot reading with the wonderful Cordelia. Just what what I needed. 

- Ryan’s playful sexy growing in intensity as the loop progresses and the constant feeling that she may be fun, but she’s also dangerous. 

- Molly’s Bald Witch always finding opportunities to lock eyes with white masks. She’s one of the rare few people that constantly looks at the audience during the ballroom which is so good and quite intense.

- Bald’s solo after the ballroom. I could watch that on repeat.

- Following Molly’s Bald twice in the space of a few days and finding the crypt dance with Banquo completely different each time due to a different performer being Banquo and the tempo being different. 

- Ginger’s Matron feeding off of Isabel Nurse’s energy and both of them being extra playful and weird. 

- Erin’s subtle yet super powerful Hecate. She may be more understated than some of the more recent Hecates we have seen, but she has a quiet authority and such a cinematic quality that I could watch her sit and stare into the distance for a loop if I had to. 

- Camara’s heartbreaking matron constantly speaking to herself between the sobs and tears. 

- The way she broke down after letting her white masks out of the 1:1. You could genuinely feel the pain she was in. 

- The way she walked me down to the banquet with a confusing detour to the lobby for good measure. 

- Kacie’s quiet and gentle nurse who just wants to be able to protect her patients no matter what. 

- Walking into the rep bar to check who Hecate was and being stolen by her before even registering who it really was. (It was Tori).

- Tori’s Hecate palm reading after putting the ring on my finger after he dinner and looking at me in wicked horror just as the thunder clapped. Genuinely made me jump out of my skin!

- Being stopped from getting on the lift by WIB so that people would go in front of me and I’d be last in. WIB telling James I’d like to go for a swim and the lift foor opening on the 6th floor rather than 5th. WHAAAAAAAAAT?!

- Getting Virginia Hecate’s cabaret and people swarming to the table as she opened her dinner meaning I couldn’t see her anymore and having to move myself several times in order to somehow keep the eye contact. 

- Ilana’s beautiful Matron trying to find some playfulness and gentleness despite her loneliness and sadness.

- Ilana’s matron slipping something into my hand during the final banquet before walking me out. 

- How the above and other little things that happened mean I still get surprised, heartbroken and sometimes even giggly at the McKittrick despite the large amount of shows under my belt. 

- Marissa’s Sexy Witch constantly toying and having the upper hand with her white masks. 

- The way she can just have you 100% in her thrall by giving you a single look. 

- Molly’s Nurse hiding behind each bath tub for ages trying to hide from god knows what or who. 

- Molly’s creepy smile as she comes at you for the 1:1. Still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. 

- RYAN’S LADY MACBETH! HOLY SHIT!!!!!!

- She’s quieter than some, but so very intense yet vulnerable. You could see small glimpses of that vulnerability that her Lady Macbeth desperateky tried to hide until it’s ultimately too late.

- The way Ryan’s Macbeth uses you for support on the way up to 5th yet never really realising or acknowleding that she’s clinging on to someone. 

- Her exchange with Danvers before the ballroom and the way she clinked her wedding ring on the whiskey glass to get Danvers’ attention. 

- Not following a single Agnes on this trip yet but wanting to and finding Marissa’s Agnes walking out onto the high street. What a wonderful loop!

- She’s a strong woman who gets broken by circumstances beyond her control but that strength is always there until the bitter end.

- The way she picks for her second 1:1 during the rave is the best thing ever.

- Marc’s Fulton despertately trying not to step on creaky floorboards while Agnes is asleep. 

- Being grabbed for a walkdown by Virginia’s Hecate on the stairs down to the final banquet and feeling equal parts excited and embarrassed. 

- Spending my last show doing to favourite loops: Bald (Molly) and Nurse (Audrey). 

- Audrey’s tired nurse prepping everything for Lady Macbeth’s arrival.

- Her pride in the pretty maze she cut out of paper and showing Chelsey’s Matron who had absolutely no interest in it. She very patronisngly hung it up on the wall as a parent would hang their child’s millionth drawing of their family pet.

- Feeling like Bald’s accomplice during the whole loop due to the amount of side eyes and smiles sent in my direction. 

- That ballroom solo... again. SO GOOD!!!

- Finding a ring where there usually isn’t one. Another little surprise to keep me on my toes.

- Virginia Hecate’s laugh post cabaret. Not quite a cackle. More like a hilarious inside joke with some imaginary being. Brilliant.

- Having a ridiculous amount of kissed masks to take home because apparently Hecate was my go to character this trip like matron and Bald were on the last one.

- Clearly the McKittrick dealt me different cards this time. Not that I’m complaining since I got to finally see an (old) favourite in that (new) role and several times too. I have no shame. 

_ Naming the pillars in the Lobby, Rep Bar and Macbeth’s room. 

- Meeting @manderleyghost and @mckittrickbold and having some wonderful pre-show and post-show chats over the weekend. 

- Making new friends and meeting up with old ones that I would never have met had it not been for this wonderful show and its fandom. 

- Leaving the city with a smile on my face and lots of new memories for the bank.

I’m pretty sure this is super long now so I’m going to leave it at that. I had such a good time despite spending an innordinate amount in the rep bar and in the actual bar thanks to Happy Hours. Thanks to all the lovely peeps on here who may read this that I got to spend time with during my visit waiting in line and nudging each other during shows. See you all at the end of July!
