🥺 first time headcanon. For our Chicago Med boys please?

And I hear that you’re having a birthday soon. I know what you’re favorite animal is but what’s your favorite flower/plant?

Lmao my 36th birthday would you believe. I am really digging peonys at the moment! And peace lily's for plants.

So I have already written a fic on this but to revise it, the two of you met when you were both helping Goodwin with the Chicago Med Christmas Toydrive. The two of you got roped into wrapping in the conference room. Both of you got a little tipsy off home made eggnog and ended up making love on the conference table amidst the wrapping paper and bows. Jimmy knew he was in love because he never does shit like that and you bring something out in him.

Ohh you make this baby work for it.

Initially he makes a pass at you and you turn him down. Your next convo has him leaving the table pissed but the third... he tells you about Harper and you tell him why you got into children's custody law. It's the first time he's been up front with anyone and he kinda likes it.

It's the fifth date when he eventually gets to undress you. By this time he's gotten to know you as a person, and he's falling in love. He's slow, the way he strips off your clothes, lingering kisses on your skin as he whispers tender words over your form. He makes love for the first time in years that night.

Connor Rhodes - You are friends that turn to lovers. You met in Molly's bonded over a tough day and you make each other laugh. You move in seperate circles but always end up in the same space, gravitating towards one another. It starts with little touches, a hand on the shoulder, palm on the lower back and hugs and it starts from there.

One night he invites you back to his apartment to test his top shelf booze and you end up in each other's personal space, clothes brushing and he asks you why have we never...

You kiss and it's all over for that two of you. He makes love to you on the couch because he can't stand not being able to touch you, or waiting any longer. You straddle his waist, hands in his hair tugging just a little and it blows his mind.

Throughout the duration of your friendship you have care of one another and even in bed you are still taking care of him.

Will falls in love with you the moment he sees you. When Jay introduces you as his colleague from Intelligence he is smitten almost immediately and the feeling is mutual. A couple of drinks later and the chemistry is flying. You end up going home with him that night. He's attentive in his love making, taking you apart and leaving you wrecked in his sheets. When you try to leave the next morning, he's already drawing you back into bed for round two and how can you resist

“What were you doing out there? It’s minus 10 degrees!” Lanik snapped gruffly, placing his stethoscope over your heart and lungs, listening intently. Even though he wasn’t the doctor assigned to your case given his relationship with you, that didn’t stop him from checking you out himself to make sure you were all right.

Of course, he knew the reason you were outside on Med’s 10th floor balcony, especially after the horrible day you’ve had - the coldest day of a typical Chicago winter not much of a deterrent for you. The court decided against your petition in the case you had so carefully constructed over the past month and that decision had shattered you. It sent you reeling the way it always did in social services when your client was a child in need of your advocacy. Despite all your efforts and late nights working up a plan, the matter was concluded with the stroke of a pen and the strike of the gavel.

Now you found yourself in a hospital bed recovering from hypothermia. You looked up at Jimmy who was avoiding eye contact as he made adjustments to the multiple leads and tubes connected to you.

“Jimmy, after everything that happened today, I just … needed a moment alone. To contemplate.”

His gaze finally fell on you. The concern was definitely there, but so was a fair amount of anger.

“Contemplate what exactly?” he said a bit gruffly, as he busied himself with checking the output monitor dials. He knew he’d find everything in place and in perfect working order, but he was trying to suppress the crushing anxiety he felt by keeping himself occupied. He was on the verge of being overwhelmed at how close he came to losing you today. When you’d been brought inside and taken to the ED, you were in hypothermia and bradycardic. And he felt powerless in the face of it and he hated that. He had to watch helplessly from outside the trauma bay as the ED team worked hard to get your vitals and core temperature stabilized.

You could see the spiral of worry in him and decided it was time to snap him out of this before he went further down the rabbit hole of “what ifs”.

“Well, Jimmy – if you must know, I was contemplating the universe and my place in it.”

That response caught him off guard as you expected it would. He looked hard at you for moment and you couldn’t resist an impish glint when you locked eyes with him.  He knew what you were doing and it amazed him again how well you knew him.

“Well, did you find it – your place in the universe?” his tone softened and lost the harshness from earlier.

“Not out there on the balcony today – but I’m sure I’ll find it with you.”

He smiled, shaking his head slightly before reaching out and taking your hand. “You scared the hell out of me today, Y/N.” he said quietly.

You interlaced your fingers with his. “I know and I’m so sorry. After everything that happened at the courthouse, I wanted a moment alone. It didn’t feel that cold when I first went out there. Time got away from me ...”

He sighed deeply, the whole of the traumatic events finally pouring out of him. He looked down at you, his expressive eyes reflecting his love for you.

“Please come find me whenever it gets that bad, okay? Don’t carry that burden alone. I’m here. Always.”

It’s objectively insane that I’m still watching Chicago Med, even though I hate practically every character, for the occasional scene with Jimmy Lanik and his perfect, perfect hair.

Lanik: I'm sorry, I'm just trying to figure out when he called your plan a failure.

Curry: Okay, maybe he didn't call my plan a failure...but it was insinuated.

Lanik: Okay. So you know that I think your plan is a good idea, and you know that I mean that, because I'm incapable of faking sincerity. I'm also just incapable of sincerity in general.

Curry: Okay, you know what, I'm going through it right now, and I actually think that I might've been the one that insinuated that my plan was a failure.

Lanik: Wait, YOU blew something out of proportion?

Radio Prompt #7 - I could tell when you locked the door just what was going on (with Jimmy Lanik)

It's the look in Jimmy's eyes when he locks the door to your office that makes pause. You're leaning against the edge of your desk reading a report one of the admin staff had handed you on the way out when you look up and see him standing there, turning the bolt.

"Jimmy..." You barely manage to say his name before his lips are on yours, his firm body pressing against the length of you. You don't where the report ends up because your fingers are already tangling in his hair as you shift onto the edge of the desk so Jimmy can take up residence between your thighs.

His hands, the ones that save so many lives, come to rest on your hips. His thumbs skirt under the fabric of your blouse, ghosting over the tattoo of a butterfly on your hip.

"Do you know it's been six days since I last saw you?" He mumbles against the corner of your mouth before he kisses a heated trail down the line of your jaw. "Six days since I've kissed you, loved you..."

You moan as his teeth graze that deviant little spot just underneath your earlobe, your hips arching against his. He's hard already, your fingers reach for his belt buckle, but he pulls away and you whine at the loss of contact.

"No honey." He murmurs as he sinks to his knees instead. "Let me take care of you for a change."

I had to giggle when I saw this today. Look at Jimmy’s eyes in this gif!!!  He’s obviously interested in something April is doing but he’s being adorably surreptitious about it. Kind of this sideways glance, like he’s taking an interest but trying not to get caught.

In my headcanon, this is the way Jimmy looks at Reader when he takes an interest in something she’s working on at home and he’s trying his best not to be obvious about staring at her, but she catches him looking.

james lanik had hardly been the one to dwell on a patient’s death, but when this certain patient came in, he felt some sort of obligation to help her.

“pronounce her, lanik,” ethan had said multiple times, much to the other man’s dismay.

after 17 minutes, he knew the next words he was about to say had been long overdue, “time of death: 13.48,” with that he walked out of the room, eyes searching for someone in particular.

when his eyes finally landed on you standing behind a computer at the nurses station, he smiled.

“oh my god, maggie, come on,” he heard you laughing at something the nurse next to you had said, making the butterflies in his stomach flutter.

you turned around, not having noticed your secret boyfriend standing next to you, “oh, hey, dr lanik,” you giggled, rubbing your shoulder on his affectionately.

“hey, dr. [y/l/n]. can i talk to you in my office?” he questioned, but already walked away before you had even answered.

maggie looked at you, stunned expression on her face, “uh, sure?” you mumbled, but it was no use as he was already a couple of feet in front of you.

you grinned as you closed the door behind you, “i always imagined you as bad boy, jimmy, but doing it in here-,” you quickly stopped talking once you saw the serious expression on his face.

“hey,” you said while lifting a hand to his cheek, cupping it gently, “are you alright?” it came out as a soft whisper, scared for whatever it was he was about to say.

“i.. uh, i lost my patient today,” he spoke softly, almosy inaudible, “babe, i’m so sorry,” you wrapped him in your arms, letting him know that you were there for him.

“it’s just that... she reminded me of you.”

his shoulders slumped, heavy sigh leaving his lips, “she was 23 weeks pregnant, but there was nothing we could do. nothing i could do. i lost them both,”

“you’re scared,” you noticed, making him nod his head, “look for what it’s worth, both me and,” you paused, taking his hand and putting it on your stil bumpless stomach, “the baby are fine. if it makes you feel any better we could go to our OB to get it checked out-,”

he shook his head, “you’re right, you’re right. i guess i was just worried.”

“that’s all right. sometimes i also need to share my feelings with others. it’s only human,” you shrugged, seeing him visibly relax a little, the smile on his face saying more than words ever could.

you let go of him and sat down on his desk, pulling his sleeve, drawing him closer to you, “now, should we get to it?”

he chuckled, head hung low, “nice try, babe, but we’re still working.” you pouted, “fine, fine, but when we get home-,”

a knock on the door made both of you freeze, before he quickly pulled you off of his desk.

the door slowly opened as i quickly made something up, trying to decieve whoever it was on the other end of the door, “yes, i’m sorry, dr lanik, it won’t happen agai-,”

“dr lanik, dr [y/l/n] is needed in baghdad,” maggie’s voice echoed through the office, “oh, right, of course,” he spoke as i walked over to the door, seeing maggie leave.

i quickly turned around and planted a kiss on jimmy’s lips, “see you tonight,” i winked, earning a small laugh from him.

maggie soon re-appeared beside me as i closed jimmy’s office door, making me yelp in suprise, “why the fuck would you scare me like that?”

the other woman just shrugged with a smug, confusing smile on her face, throwing you off, “anyway, what’s coming in?”

“oh, nothing, i just needed to ask you something important,”

you crossed your arms and stopped in you tracks, “maggie, you can’t just lie about a big trauma coming in, what if-,”

“so how long has that been going on? you and jim,” that simple question had thrown you off guard.

“excuse me? me and jim,” you fakely laughed a little before continuing, “no, you got the wrong idea there, mags.”

“oh, come on. you two almost always are in at the same time, the secret meet-ups in his office, the oggling each other from across the room, the soft whispers, giggles and smiles when you think no one’s watching,”

you raised your hands, “well, i don’t know what to tell ya. jim and i are just good friends.”

her raised eyebrow told you she wasn’t buying anything you said, “fine. we’ve been together since about a year,” you softly confessed, causing maggie’s eyes to widen and her smile to grow.

“ahh! i’m so happy for you!” she yelled, causing you to shush her.

“mags, shut up, no one knows yet,”

she straightend her posture, “right, right.”

“dr [y/l/n]! we could really use your help in here!” april yelled from the treatment room across of us.

“coming!” in a beeline you run across the ED, just barely getting to the arresting patient in time.

How do you sleep at night + lanik

After April leaves, Ethan can’t let it go. Their patient needed the ventilator, no questions asked. So he stays, and waits for Jimmy to look at him. He looks exhausted. He won’t quite meet Ethan’s eyes, and his pupils are pinpricks in the bright light.

“How do you sleep at night?” he hisses.

Lanik fixes his mask with hands that are so visibly unsteady it’s frightening. “I don’t.”

“Jimmy-”

“No, it’s fine. It’s fine because when I shut my eyes it all makes sense and then they let me have some rest.”

Something is wrong. Something is clearly wrong here and it’s terrifying to see the chief of the ED looking lost and nearly afraid of something over Ethan’s right shoulder that doesn’t seem to actually exist. 

“Are you okay?”

Jimmy shakes his head quickly and fixes his mask once more. His eyes refocus and he seems lost. 

“What were we talking about?”

“You denied my patient a ventilator.”

He furrows his brow. “Why would I do that?”

“I don’t know.”

“Oh.” Jimmy fiddles with some of his papers and scribbles something with his pen. “That doesn’t sound right. Here, it’s approved. You can have the nurse hook up your patient.”

Something is definitely not alright with Dr. Lanik, but it’s helped Ethan’s patient this time. 

He doesn’t push the subject.

Finally caught up on Med...

I have to say they are still on their bullshit but for the first time in I don’t know how many seasons the show feels like it’s moving towards something big as in the finale would be huge.

Every single character feels like they have some kind of growth or that they are moving towards something bigger, there’s definitely a momentum that I can’t quite put my finger on. There are so many moving parts and stories and for the first time since season 1 I actually feel some of the familial/friendly feels that they used to have.

Maggie has a real story, and we got backstory about a baby girl she gave up for adoption when she was a teenager who she has decided to actively look for! And how did we find this out? I wish that I could say it was something she disclosed to Natalie but it was to Sharon. This still backs up what I’ve said in the past that they aren’t as close as the show tells us they are (Maggie + Natalie). When Maggie needs to open up and get vulnerable it’s with Sharon, Will, or some of the nurses like April and Monique. But it’s not a shit on Natalie moment, she asks and offers to be there for Maggie more than we’ve seen in a while. I just wonder why Maggie doesn’t open up to her...like really open up.

Speaking of opening up I really like that all of the doctors are seeing Daniel, it allows for a lot of missing interpersonal communication that has been severely lacking in past seasons. I also love that issues like Ethan’s PTSD haven’t been forgotten. Daniel’s sessions with the characters feels more organic this season, the conversations aren’t written off a cliff and he always follows up and touches on issues that they spoke about in the past. It may seem small but it’s big thing for Med to keep the continuity going.

Sharon was MIA for the first few episodes but having her back once again feels organic, her story doesn’t feel shoehorned even though I’m sure some see it as “a lot” it feels right. I hope that there is a resolution with her son going forward and she isn’t caught in the middle much longer with his ambitions and her duty to the hospital.

Daniel’s custody battle is wild to me considering that I’m still in the middle of writing “Let Me Re-Introduce Myself” and I have him losing custody there too. Albeit for different reasons lol. I’m not a huge fan of Anna, I hope that Daniel gets a chance to be a good dad to her, with maybe a Robin sighting somewhere in the mix.

The show has managed to discuss and incorporate Owen more than they have in the last three seasons and I think that’s really cool. Natalie gets to be a mom and I think that’s needed for her character’s growth. I’m still really annoyed that they wrote her taking all these huge risks with her career last season just to have her leaning on Crockett every two seconds. That’s one of my biggest gripes with their writing of her. When she was closer and even in a relationship with Will it was the same. They were always on cases together and she was always getting a second opinion i.e second guessing herself. I don’t like that for the ONLY female doctor on the show. They are the only thing that feels sequestered and like the “old Med.”

The Crockett-Natalie relationship to me is manufactured chemistry which is this case for almost all the ships on the show. They write what they want, because screen tests are not a thing anymore. I like that he finally has someone to open up to and he has a place to finally be vulnerable. I don’t think any of this is meant to last. If this is the season for continuity than we cannot forget that Crockett watched Phillip slip a ring on Natalie’s finger and didn’t say shit...that will always be a yuck spot for me.

Manstead is DEAD in the water right now. But the Crockett-Natalie ship feels like Jeff and Natalie. She is like “yeah sure....maybe” I just don’t buy it for longevity. Crockett is going to end up hurt before she finds her way back to Will. And speaking of Will...

Will is criming every episode. Like the way this dude is head-on backsliding into the illegal nonsense, from giving/taking bribes to unblinding the study and then lying to Virani about it...this is building into something really awful guys. And also, what in the world is going on with the Virani-Will-Ethan weirdness. I think Virani is fond of Will maybe even a little attracted to him but she is flustered around Ethan. I don’t know if he is ready to move on but when he does, I could definitely see her going out with him. What’s odd is that the show after like two seasons finally has Will working with April and with the proximity to Ethan and Virani and all the clashing Will and Ethan have had this season...I don’t know where this is going...nowhere good though.

Ethan is a the best fit for Chief. I’m so grateful that we still see Lanik, I can’t get on board with them calling him Jim...that is a white guy manning the grill at some random neighborhood barbeque. I’d rather them call him James. Anyway we all saw the drill sergeant coming a mile away. I knew he was going to be crazy. I didn’t expect him to be stupid. He had gallbladder surgery and then came to work? C’mon dude. However, I feel like that was Ethan’s second biggest misstep the first was hiring Dr. Archer. Guys, he gives me DARK vibes. Like, Gwen and Jimmy, and Ava, and even Cornelius NEVER had the creep-factor that this guy has. There is something malevolent and downright violent about him. I don’t know if it’s the actor or just his portrayal of the character but I feel like at his most benign he would sue the hospital for wrongful termination, cause lets face it he is not going to make it at Med, or he is going to do something that is really awful. I could be wrong and maybe I’m channeling that feeling into a fic but I got my eye on that one.

And last but not least, April. I worried that she wasn’t going to get much to do and would go back to being a supportive character this season. When she isn’t in a ship she is completely ignored. But they haven’t been so terrible with her. I do feel like they could’ve written something a little bit more articulate about why the Covid-Unit was so important to her. Like we as an audience know April is empathetic but I wanted to hear what that felt like for her, maybe tie back into some of the things she’s given up for this job. I absolutely did not miss her saying that she felt like she was apart of something bigger and that “Ethan took that from me.” It felt like what she was saying had some double meaning, Ethan ending the engagement and ending their relationship as well as her saying he was his own worst enemy felt oddly therapeutic and somewhat foreshadowing of what’s to come. It’s clear that they still have feelings for each other. I just hoped for once that there had been a little more attention given to why she felt such a huge purpose from that work. I’m glad that she is helping with the trial. I have more Sexstead gif opportunities than ever before! Did anyone notice that scene was in the promo pics between her and Will and where she’s crying were deleted? I really want to know what happened, because those tears look like a patient she was closed to died or she was falling apart at the idea of not being apart of the trial anymore.

All the same this season isn’t that bad. What I’m  not crazy about I can tolerate and for once I’m curious to see what they are going to do going forward.
