Okay, and while I'm at it...

Why is the cast of Dune part 2 SO WHITE?

A movie relying heavily on SWANA culture, and not 1 supporting actor / actress, character with a name or a few lines is played by SWANA talent? There are so many great actors and actresses in the 2 biggest movie industry countries in the region, Egypt and Iran, alone! Why not put some of them in Dune?

Also, part 1 had a much more diverse cast. Dr. Yueh, Duncan, Jamis, Shadout Mapes, Liet Kynes, Thufir, Chani - all were played by non white actors.

For part 2 it's just Thufir and Chani. All other new characters are played by white actors: the emperor, irulan, feyd, Lady Margot... Why? They gender- and race-swapped Kynes in part 1. So why is Shaddam white, why irulan, why feyd, why lady fenring???

I had hoped part 2, being set almost entirely on Arrakis, would give room for more diverse casting. This is disappointing.

Dune/School AU

In which Paul, Alia, Feyd-Rautha, Glossu, Chani and Irulan and her sisters are all in school. Paul, Feyd-Rautha, Chani and Irulan--secondary school. Paul and Irulan are in student government/head boy and head girl. Glossu--in college, on a football scholarship. Chalice and Wensicia--high school. Josifa and Rugi--primary school. Alia--homeschooled, for reasons. Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho--phys ed, especially fencing (Paul's favourite subjects). Margot Fenring--French, literature, history(Irulan's favorite subjects). Also, Margot is married to Hasimir Fenring, assistant to Shaddam Corrino and chief troubleshooter for Imperial Universe Corp. She and Feyd are in a relationship. Gauis Helen Mohaim--the principal/headmistress of the school, who knows just what her students are getting up to. They're all convinced she's a witch. She's on Irulan's back to concentrate on business and finance, so that she can run Imperial Universe and to seriously consider one of the Harkonnen boys as a life partner. Although Irulan takes her advice in the first case, she is dragging her feet on the second. Feyd-Rautha and Glossu are being brought up by Leto and Jessica Atreides. Their parents, Abulurd and his wife, knew Jessica's mother, who brought her up without any support from Abulurd's brother, Vladimir--they tried to help as much as they could. So when Abulurd and his wife were making their wills, they named Jessica guardian to their sons. Also, Vladimir being unmarried is a serious black mark against him. He's dogged by rumours of sexual abuse of underage boys Both Leto and Vladimir work for Imperial Universe Corp, as does Chani's mother, ecologist Dr Liet Kynes. Imperial Universe Corp is headed by Shaddam Corrino--they're into trading in everything, from agricultural produce to petroleum and drugs. Dr Liet Kynes tries to ensure that IU Corp does as little damage to the planet as possible. Shaddam's wife, Anirul and Jessica run a yoga and meditation studio, in which they try to ensure that children and adults learn as much as possible, to stay healthy and grounded. Jessica's mother started this studio, with help from Abulurd and his wife. Jessica took over after graduating business school and Anirul, her classmate, joined her. Their children, including the Harkonnen boys, are expected to take active part.

Thufir Hawat works as an accountant with Leto, while Piter DeVries is a rather shady lawyer who works with Vladimir Harkonnen. Dr Yueh and his wife provide medical care to this group.

Where’s Feyd?

Okay, a very prominent character missing from Dune part I is Feyd Rautha.

Why?

I can understand why the emperor doesn’t appear - he can be seen as an aloof figure in the background. True, his exclusion takes away all the plotting going on bts before the Atreides get named as new rulers of Arrakis - but maybe there’s another way to show this?

I can - to an extent - even understand why Irulan doesn’t appear. Only having her appear in part II can stress how thrown into this whole story she is - much against her will. Though I liked the much bigger part she had in the TV series.

Count and Countess Fenring I would have loved to see! But I understand that the Dune universe is already so crowded and that these characters are probably the ones most easily being left out without cutting too much of the story.

But Feyd?

For me, he’s a dark mirror of Paul. (Dune works a lot with mirroring, like, the Harkonnen are the dark mirror of the Atreides, Piter is the dark mirror of Thufir, even Ramallo as the Fremen Sayyadina is a mirror of Gaius Helen Mohiam, Chani mirrors Irulan and so on).

Like Paul, Feyd is included in his uncles (devious) schemes. The baron explains to him in an early chapter what he plans with Arrakis and the Atreides, much like Leto includes Paul in some of his - more noble? - government affairs.

The baron lusts after Feyd as he lusts after Paul. And - spoiler - he’s related to both. That’s another similarity they share.

Feyd is shown training and fighting like Paul. But, as a dark mirror, Feyd’s opponent is drugged and that allows him to win.

Feyd is entertaining the idea to murder his uncle... Paul is also thinking about what will happen when his father dies, but, as the good side in this mirroring, he fears it. Yet they both know they can only succeed when their uncle/father dies.

The baron even plans to introduce Feyd as the savior to Arrakis after Rabban’s terror rule as whom the Fremen consider Paul. Both young men are destined to bring relief to and rule Arrakis.

Paul shouldn’t have been born. Lady Jessica should have given birth to a girl who should then have been married to Feyd to only maybe then create the Kwisatz Haderach. So in the Feyd/Paul relationship is Paul the girl? He alsmost loses the fight in the end, alsmost getting penetrated by the knife at Feyd’s hip... hello, Dr Freud?!

Okay, so, Feyd is IMPORTANT. As a character and as a narrative function, mirroring Paul, as the dark background that lets Paul shine; I think important enough that he should have appeared in the first movie. Just introducing him in Dune part II might be too late? It might feel forced, bringing him in so late? Or will his character be fused with Rabban? But will that work? Rabban is rather dumb and brutal while Feyd is much more sophisticated. He can even be called charming.

I think it’s important to show that the Harkonnen are not just fat ugly baddies. Feyd is the charming face of evil and that would break up the clichee that you can recognize an evil person by their looks (and, in the book, by their sexual orrientation, I’m curious how Villeneuve deals with that?).

So, why was he left out?

Dune: 25 Things To Expect from Dune Part Two

The epic tale of the Dune: Part One has been told. We have learned about the House of Atreides, the House Harkonnen, the Bene Gesserit and the Fremen.

We also saw the betrayals – from Dr Yueh by helping the Baron stage a coup on the House of Atreides. At the end of Dune: Part One, Paul fight to the death with Jamis to become a part of the Fremen.

*Spoiler Alert*

Jamis died, and in the words of Stilgar: it is a life for a life. So the question is, what now happens to Paul Atreides and his mother, Lady Jessica, as they have joined Fremen?

We had to read the book to find out.

Parts of the Book that made up Dune: Part One

Dune, the 1965 sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert is divided into three books namely:

Dune

Muad’Dib

The Prophet

Dune: Part One (the movie) focused mostly on Book 1 (Dune) and the early parts of Book 2 (Muad’Dib). This means that Dune Part Two will continue with the rest of Book 2 and all of Book 3 (The Prophet).

25 Plot Points to expect from Part Two

*SPOILER ALERT*

If you’re not interested in spoiling Dune Part Two for yourself, skip this whole post as we would not be held responsible for you knowing the things you don’t wanna know.

1. Paul Atreides adopts the Fremen name Muad’Dib (Paul-Muad’Dib)

After defeating Jamis, Paul and Jessica join Stilgar and the other to Sietch Tabr. On their way there, Stilgar asks Paul what he would like to be called, and he says:

“How do you call among you the little mouse, the mouse that jumps?”

To which Stilgar answers:

“We call that one muad’dib,”

On hearing the name, Jessica becomes worried as Paul had told her of a vision he had where the Fremen accepted them and called him Muad’Dib.

2. Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen will be introduced

Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen is the younger brother of Glossu Rabban, both of whom are the nephews of Vlamdir Harkonnen. Feyd-Rautha, like his older brother Glossu Rabban, is a bloodthirsty Harkonnen who had already killed his 100th gladiator in the family games by age 17.

Despite Feyd-Rautha being the heir designate of the House of Harkonnen, the Emperor doesn’t see him worthy, which rattles the Baron.

3. Thufir Hawat is still alive

Thufir Hawat, the Mentat of the House of Atreides is not dead. After Duke Leto released the poison that led to the death of Piter De Vries and several others, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen was left without a Mentat. So, instead of killing Thufir Hawat, he kept him as he said:

“You must understand, Fenring, I was without a Mentat. You know that. I’ve never been without a Mentat. It was most unsettling.”

When asked by Count Ferring how he was able to make Hawat change allegiance, the Baron said:

“His Duke was dead …The Mentat’s flesh has been impregnated with a latent poison. We administer an antidote in his meals. Without the antidote, the poison is triggered—he’d die in a few days.”

Meaning that Hawat had no choice but to do as the Baron expected of him as doing otherwise will lead to death.

4. Chani is the daughter of Dr Liet-Kynes

After Jamis’ funeral, Paul and the others arrive at Sietch Tabr, where they find out that Dr Liet is dead. That is the moment we find out (with Paul) that Chani is Liet’s daughter. In the book, Liet is a man, but in Dune: Part One, Liet-Kynes is a woman, which means that Chani will find out in Dune Part Two that her mother is dead.

5. …And the niece of Stilgar

Stilgar is Chani’s uncle.

6. Paul inherits Jamis’ Family

As part of the Fremen tradition, Paul inherits Jamis’ water, his wife, his children and his home. When Jamis’ widow, Harah, is presented to Paul, Stilgar asks him to choose if he would want her as a woman or a slave? Paul chooses her to be his slave.

Harah being Paul’s slave meant that he is responsible for her and her children, and after a year, she is free to choose a man for herself.

7. Jessica becomes the Fremen’s, Reverend Mother

Stilgar asks Jessica to join both Chani and the old Reverend Mother to perform a ritual. Chani gives Jessica a liquid to drink, which puts Jessica in a trance where the old Reverend Mother pours all of her experiences into Jessica. After giving Jessica all of her memories, she passes on, making Jessica the new Reverend Mother of the Fremen.

8. Paul becomes the Prophet

In the same ceremony that made his mother the Reverend Mother, Paul is turned into a prophet. We get the first information about him being a prophet from the first chapter of Book 3 when Feyd-Rautha tells the Baron about a Fremen Prophet called the Muad’Dib. As their prophet, the Fremen had become even more religious, and Paul had taught them the fighting tactics of his mentors – Duncan Idaho and Gurney Halleck.

9. A 2-year time jump between the Muad’Dib and the Prophet

Paul and Feyd-Rautha were teenagers when the House of Harkonnen staged a coup on the House of Atreides. After Jessica becomes the Reverend Mother, we would see a time jump. This time around, they would be adults: Feyd-Rautha being a bloodthirsty heir, with growing contempt for his uncle and Paul being a Fremen Prophet. The Baron during this time also becomes very aware of Feyd-Rautha’s desperation to succeed him.

10. Hawat convinces the Baron to recruit the Fremen into his army

Hawat, still hurt by the loss of the House of Atreides, decides to turn Duke Leto’s dream of forming an alliance with the Fremen into the Baron’s. First, he lets the Baron in on Duncan Idaho’s information on the Fremen being up to 6 million in population. Then, he convinces the Baron to work against Rabban to achieve this motive.

Initially, the Baron is against it, but it doesn’t take much to convince him as the Baron is highly dependent on the wisdom of a mental.

11. Paul’s Sister and Son

In Dune: Part One, we found out that Jessica was pregnant, and in Dune Part Two, she would give birth to a daughter called Alia-the-Strange-One. Paul and Chani also become parents to a son known as Leto II – named after the late Duke Leto of Atreides.

12. Jessica disapproves of Paul’s marriage to Chani

Paul and Chani enter into a marriage of youth which produces a son, Leto II – a marriage Jessica disapproves of it because according to her:

“What can his desert woman do for a Duke except serve him cofee? She brings him no power, no family. Paul has only one major chance— to ally himself with a powerful Great House, perhaps even with the Imperial family. There are marriageable princesses, after all, and every one of them Bene Gesserit-trained.”

But she is forced to accept her because she produced an Atreides son. Later on, however, when Paul begins to acknowledge himself as the Duke of Arrakis, her thoughts run deep and then she resigns within herself that:

“As long as Chani lives, Paul will not see his duty, Jessica thought. She has given him a son and that is enough.”

13. Alia-the-Strange-One is seen as possessed by a demon

During the rites that turned Jessica into the Reverend Mother, the old Reverend Mother told Jessica that she was lucky the child in her womb was a girl. Had it been a boy, he would have died. Unfortunately, Alia is not your average toddler. She speaks of things that children are not supposed to know, and the entire tribe think of her as strange and demon-possessed. What they don’t know is that Alia is also a reverend mother.

14. Paul will undergo a sand-rider test

Where he has to ride a sandworm. He succeeds and becomes the mundir of the sand ride.

15. Gurney Halleck is not dead

16. Paul vs Stilgar

As Paul rises in power, the Fremen demand that he challenge Stilgar to a battle, like Jamis did him. Paul refuses because he values Stilgar’s wisdom and leadership.

17. Jessica discovers that Paul is truly the Kwisatz Haderach

Paul takes a drop of the Water of Life and goes unconscious for three weeks. When he regains consciousness, he demands that his mother takes him to the dark place she and other Reverend Mothers fear the most. Jessica disagrees at first but agrees when he persists. He enters her mind and when they return, she realises that her son is truly the Kwisatz Haderach and she becomes both fearful and unhappy.

18. Leto II and Alia

In the war against the Harkonnen and Sardaukar, Paul loses his son Leto II while Alia is taken hostage (by the Emperor).

19. Emperor Shaddam IV shows his face

He appears just before the climax, and in his first scene, treats the Baron with the utmost contempt. He is described as a red-head man with slim features. His daughter, Princess Irulan, also makes an appearance. Princess Irulan is the de facto narrator of Dune as this story is read through her account of what happened.

20. Alia seals the Baron’s fate

Alia, a 4-year-old Fremen war commander, is taken hostage by the Emperor after her nephew, Leto II, was murdered. The Emperor’s intent is to force Paul to yield to his commands. But while in captivity, she manages to kill the Baron with a gom jabbar.

21. Paul comes face to face with the Queen Mother who tested him

This time, he is the one in control and challenges her to test him again. He tells her that he could have her strangled but would rather her live the rest of her life knowing that she can never control him.

22. Paul and Feyd-Rautha fight

In the penultimate scene of the book, Paul and Feyd-Rautha fight to the death in the presence of the Emperor, Princess Irulan, Jessica, Chani, Gurney and everybody. During the fight, Feyd-Rautha tries to poison Paul with a needle attached to his hip but fails as Paul stabs him through the jaw leading to Feyd-Rautha.

23. Paul marries Princess Irulan

To broker peace and ensure an Atreides sits on the throne, Paul marries the Princess, asking for all of the CHOAM company as dowry. Hes an elusive little shit isnt he?

Right now the best thing to do is ask! His tag is a bit outdated but theres still some good bits that are more recent. This is gonna be a long ass post so bear with me:

Drake started his career at CIT, excelling in chemistry and biology with an unnerving detatchment from humanity. He was conscripted by the Army at the request of General Chase and was sent to work on Project Psycho at Chase R&D. He rose in rank and got in so good with Chase that he was promised a spot on the Enclave Rig should the War escalate. He was stationed in Anchorage when his facility was over run by Russian-Chinese forces and was taken prisoner to work for them.

Enemy forces had found a natural rift in the time/space fabric at a redacted location in the mountains, they forced Drake to prepare other prisoners as test subjects to put them through the rift. Eventually it was his turn after too many of his patients died. He was forced through the rift and woke up in 2271.

He spent the next 3 months surviving the wild, he had no idea that the bombs had dropped and civilization had collapsed. He finally found a caravan and eventually made his way down the coast and to the Mojave where he searched for remnants of his Enclave.

Drake found what he was looking for eventually, working as a spy and feeding intel to the small cabal left over from their defeat at the hands of the Chosen One. After 6 years, he made his way east - to Capital City and the Enclave at Raven Rock. After their defeat a second time, Drake followed a lead from Dr. Syverson and traveled north to Boston to find the Institute.

It took some doing, but he caught the attention of Father and met with Kellogg to come work for them in their FEV labs below ground for approximately 10 years. The FEV labs were discontinued much Drake's rage, he moved to the SRB and plotted a coup when the Sole Survivor showed up and upended all his plans...again.

After the destruction of the Institute, he traveled extensively trying to exact his revenge on the Sole Survivor but was never successful and retreated to Far Harbor. His horrible attitude, unethical behavior, and penchant for violence left him with more enemies than friends and soon he was left for dead at the hands of his former companion.

In time, he would recover thanks to the good folks at the pier. Fortunately they had no idea who he was or the things he had done but hed come to learn that his previous behavior was not compatible with getting his mission complete. He would endeavor now to raise the Institute to a new glory, and use the remains of the Enclave to do that. But hed need to travel now to West Virginia, where the Enclave super AI MODUS still operated in a sealed vault under the Whitesprings.

MODUS and Vault Tec collaborated on a new military simulation using the residents of Vault 76. Like the Sole Survivor, these folks became locked and preserved for 200+ years. It became apparent that due to MODUS' encryption, Drake would also have to enter the simulation in order to extract the data he needed. It was supposed to be a quick op but things got complex.

While in the simulation, it was made to feel like 2103, about 25 or 26 years after the bomb first dropped. He met several members of the Vault and quickly made his way in through rank, but the most important of these members would be a young General named Valentino Ricci. The two of them surprisingly bonded fiercely and became inseperable.

Now the two of them are trying to navigate the sim in order to extract MODUS and also now to safely extract Tino from the failing life support systems.

The story is still being written, and one day @charomiami and i have a plan to write all this stuff out and illustrate it and all kinds of junk but lifes tough and times short. I hope you enjoyed a little of the story so far though, thank you for asking!!

I'm having thoughts Hasimir Fenring, the Emperor's trusted assassin.

Paul is mentioned to be unable to see him in his visions, and draws the conclusion that Fenring is somehow a key character of his story, a person of great potential, but squandered in service to his master. Nearly an equal to Paul, an almost-Kwisatz Haderach whose inability to be a father (hideously worded as "genetical eunuch") made him a "dead end" and turned him bitter.

tl;dr: Count Fenring's "genetical eunuch" status is a bullshit term to cover the fact that he's a trans man in a strongly binary, conservative and genealogy-obsessed society.

"Huh? Wtf are you on, Bear?"

Consider. This is a world where women reaching for direct secular power are despised and pushed back, and where the only acceptable leadership path for a woman is becoming one of the Bene Gesserit, forced into advisory and support roles at powerful men's side, but also entangled in their order's millenia-long plans and often paying for their privilege by bearing and matching their children according to the Reverend Mothers' scenarios. It's also a world where men generally only trust other men, and the binary is so culturally entrenched that you are allowed to only be one or the other, at least if you're anyone significant. Paul Atreides receiving both mentat and Bene Gesserit training is subversive not just because it blends two opposing philosophies, but also two gender roles - which is normally not allowed, save for Kwisatz Haderach potentials.

Now imagine that an opposite of Paul is born in this world: a carefully planned child, one of the possible outcomes of the Kwisatz Haderach equation, with all the perfectly designed qualities... except a double X chromosome. The Bene Gesserit are of course ready for such eventualities, and consider the child merely a perfect future mother for their end product. But here's the second snag: as soon as the child becomes aware of the gap between accepted genders, and the expectations that come with it, they start pushing back. They don't want to be Bene Gesserit. They don't want to be a woman. They feel as male as possible when raised by women in this strongly gendered, rigid environment. And being a scion of a significant House, an impatiently awaited progeny to perhaps a more tolerant father, the child finally succeeds in being recognized as a boy.

Being already inducted into Bene Gesserit training, and having male status now, the newly-named countling Hasimir manages to achieve a lot - preliminary mentat programming, combat training worthy of a future lord, the works. He is in nearly every aspect like Paul, except... he can no longer take part in the Bene Gesserit genetic program. Instead, he is trapped between the order's manipulations - which allow him to take the woman he loves as his wife, for the price of having no say in whose child he will raise as his heir - and his loyalty towards the Emperor (I'm sure there would be a whole story here, considering Shaddam's misogyny, paranoia and general assholery - maybe he was a better person in his youth, although it's doubtful).

In the end, Hasimir takes Paul's side instead of killing him for Shaddam - is it because of a feeling of kinship with Paul? The boy managed to fulfill the potential Hasimir couldn't fully develop because of the laws and taboos of his society. He seems to have a chance where Fenring was given none. At this point, Hasimir's life of bearing the limits and expectations thrust upon him comes to a pivotal point where he must make a choice. He can either bear the indignity and accept these limits one last time, or follow the expectations and kill the only person in the room he can somewhat relate to despite so many differences - the boy he should've been.

Anyway I have nothing but respect for Count Hasimir Fenring, a soft-spoken man of loyalty and integrity in a galaxy of chest-thumping, disloyal and scheming bastards.
