Sylvester McCoy's Doctor regenerated into Paul McGann's Doctor in Doctor Who: The Movie on May 14, 1996. After being shot by criminals, the Doctor was taken to a hospital, where his alien biology caused Dr Grace Holloway to accidently kill him. The Master also took over a new body and was protrayed by Eric Roberts. Doctor Who: The Movie was a failed pilot for an American Produced series. While the series didn't come to be, McGann cotinued to protray his Doctor in audio form and eventually in cameos in specials and later episodes of the revived Doctor Who series. one thing I love about dr who lore is that you can be selective about what you take as canon. Because let’s be so fr, the canon is barely canon in dr who.

there are some set events, but everything else is, in dr who terms, in flux. The writers decide to ignore things all the time, and I think it’s iconic that as a fandom we do the same. it helps that a good few writers aren’t the best of people, so you can make the excuse that they didn’t know wtf they were doing running the show (and did they? Who’s to say?)
