On July 18th, 2015, I realized that the Republican Party had left me behind. On this day, while seeking the Republican nomination for president, Donald Trump had the following to say about an Annapolis graduate who was shot down, captured and tortured as a POW by the communist North Vietnam regime:
“He's not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."
This verbal diarrhea came out of the mouth of a man who used his father’s wealth and privilege to dodge the draft five different times due to his “bone spurs”. Donald Trump is a traitor, a repeated draft dodger and the largest fraud in the history of our country.

As someone who was raised Catholic I think it's silly that Valentine's Day is seen as a day primarily about celebrating romantic love, because Valentine was primarily helping people dodge the draft.
St. Valentine was a priest who would marry Christians so that they wouldn't have to participate in the military draft. Service in the army was mandatory for young men in the Roman republic, but if that man was married than he was allowed to avoid service. Many Christians felt that their religion prevented them from joining the Army, but the idea of a conscientious objector didn't really exist yet. So the only way for a Christian man to avoid military service was to get married.
The man now known as St. Valentine for whom Valentine's Day is named after wasn't granting out Christian marriages for the purity and sanctity of romantic love - he was helping pacifists gain an excuse to not have to go fight.

"COURT DECIDES DRINKING NEVER ACTUATED CRIME," Hamilton Spectator. October 26, 1943. Page 7. --- Magistrate Rejects Accused's Contention Intoxication Caused His Trouble --- Herman Opperchuk Sentenced to Reformatory For Stealing Hosiery --- Admission of the theft of six pairs of socks from a store resulted in a sentence of six months definite and six months indefinite at the Ontario reformatory being imposed in magistrate's court this morning on Herman Opperchuk, 48, of 42 Bay street north.
After reading the record of the accused, which included many offences, Magistrate H. A. Burbidge rejected his plea that he only stole when he was intoxicated.
Matthew Leeson, who gave the Ontario Hospital as his address, pleaded guilty to the theft of a pair of trousers from a department store. Acting Crown Attorney Hugh Brown consented to a remand of one week.
Given Dual Sentence Albert Hill, 411 King street east, who pleaded guilty to a vagrancy charge in magistrate's court on Saturday, was sentenced to 30 days in jail by Magistrate James McKay this morning. Hill was picked up by the police in the early hours of Saturday riding over the back roads near Aldershot.
Convicted of a breach of the National Selective Service Mobilization Act, he was sentenced to 21 days in jail, the terms to run concurrently.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE SIXTIES SLOGAN:
“Suppose they gave a war and nobody came.”
Tumblr media
The most common version, “Suppose they gave a war and nobody came,” was used as a slogan on posters that were sold in Hippie shops in the late Sixties (like the blacklight poster shown above)
