In Davrin’s handwriting
- No cheating
- No arrows at the table
- No Rivaini rules if we have to get up earlier than midday
- If Assan eats a card, it’s out of play
- Smelling the other players counts as cheating (this includes Spite)
- If you run out of gold, you can still bet something of similar value (just keep your clothes on in front of Manfred)
- Card counting counts as cheating (sorry, Bellara)
- Card counting while being a detective still counts as cheating
In Neve’s handwriting You’re just sore I cost you 10 gold
- Rook’s going to cheat anyway. When playing against Rook, you can ignore up to 3 rules

Lucanis Lunchboxes: Toasted Vanilla Gelato
What if Lucanis packed Rook lunchboxes with little notes in them throughout the main story?
On the map, a "!" icon appears in the hallway just outside Rook's room in the Lighthouse. A temporary chest here holds a one-of-a-kind Valuable and a letter from Lucanis that is added to the Codex. Triggers after the completion of Taash's companion quest Lair of the Dragon King.
Tumblr media
[SPOILERS] Read the letter from Lucanis below the line:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Watching Taash and Lucanis' friendship develop was an unexpected bright point of the companion interactions for me. If you haven't heard all of their companion banter, you are missing out! They both struggle with putting their feelings to words and prefer problems they can stab. There are some painful, beautiful parallels between how they've learned to cope with wanting acceptance and love from emotionally unavailable mothers. (Or grandmothers, in Lucanis' case.) The generational trauma bonding is real. And they really DO try to use their words for each other. Ugh I just loved the hell out of all their little conversations. (Edit - Writing Nerd Ramblings Below:) I loved the whiplash with how matter-of-fact Lucanis was whenever he spoke about the ABSOLUTE HORRORS he's dealt with. To me, that's this massive breadcrumb on how deeply he has stuffed down his feelings and what he has faced in his past. "My parents died horribly. Do you want to go on a date when this is all over?" This leads me to something I'm fiddling with. It's been an interesting exercise trying to find the right pace for how to fill out these entries and tease at romance without changing who Lucanis is. He's romantically distant. Inexperienced. Terrified of what it would mean to want Rook. But he's also deeply empathetic. A teammate who shows care through acts of service. An avid romance reader. He's seen his cousin Illario work his magic at romance and Lucanis has picked up enough to fool Rook, at least at the start. (Even though I think the wall lean is more fun to interpret as a "Oh, he's a romance book" guy. Because he totally got that out of a book. Let's be real.) The reason I started writing these was I thought the push-pull of Lucanis being more vulnerable through an indirect form, like writing, could work to feed us, the hungry players, while still leaning into the "disaster bisexual" label his writer used for him. What's more disaster-bi-coded than flirty texting followed by weirdly distant in-person interactions? It begs the question, how slow is a slow burn?

So... I revamped some Codex Entries to match the Rookery's world-state
I put in mentions of Zevran on some codex entries, mainly these (which is neutral enough for all playthrough with Zevran being a live i think), and some missives (that were from npcs which i re-purposed to be Zevran who wrote & sent them)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and most important of all, letter from mum & dad🥹💖
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i've added a few moments of Rin interacting with the Lighthouse as well, i'll put more details below the cut
Rook chiming in with the second book club meeting, chiming in to the moving notes, gave suggestions to Bellara
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...And many more, honestly. I've managed to change some of the Inquisitor's letters to make it seems like the South isn't ENTIRELY destroyed and sounded more positive (idk why my inquisitor would sound SOOOO pessimistic in the missives. He's a CONFIDENT CHUMP so im changing THAT).
------------------------------------------------------------------
Full Codex/Missive Edits (I might miss some >.<)
Rook's involvement in Lighthouse activities:
Waterlogged Notes on the Lighthouse: Rook chimes in (and is the one moving the watterlogged notes)
Book Club Notes: Second meeting: Rook joins in (as a guest) to borrow the book
Suggested Lighthouse Improvements: Rook suggested adding traps to Bellara
Moss' world-state edits:
Inquisitor's missives edits: F!HoF is alive, Alistair is King, Inquisitor is m!Lavellan. Missives sounds more positive (and with more successful delegation attempts)
Who's This Morrigan: Mentions of Morrigan spotted with her son.
Notes from the Inquisition (Josephine romance): changes from not-engaged to have been married with one daughter
An Update from Lavendel: HoF is helping Antoine and Evka
A letter from House de Riva: Viago mentions to Lucanis he has a clean, unkown contact (Zevran implied)
Greetings from the Gallery: Mistress Trella implied Viago sent Zevran to help the stolen art
The Dellamorte Vineyards: Lucanis gets infro from (implied) Zevran. Teia gets a bottle of wine from Zevran.
The Gratitude of Lovers: Zevran (still remaining anonymous) implied had to help the lovers escape Treviso
Rindhil-specific edits:
Food Inventory: Rook deposits food and bans Carrots.
Lorelei, the Shadow Dragon Fence: Harding took note that Rook bears resemblance to her old friend (f!Tabris, his mother)
Still Alive -> To My Dearest Sunshine (A letter from f!Tabris, his Mother)
The Fortunes of House Egrativi -> Regarding House Egrativi, from Your Senior Crow (A letter from Zevran, his father)
------------------------------------------------------------------
I can share the .fbmod to nexus if anyone's interested, although this is highly tailored to my own world state, so iiiii kinda doubt anyone could use it. maybe if i got enough time i can take edit requests to remove some parts of my mod, or feel free to just request some parts of it (to make it more universal. Like Zevran's existence in the game)

BioWare uses AI in Dragon Age: The Veilguard codex cards
And I think it's not only there - most of the armor looks like the use AI for references.
But about the codex: this applies to the Grey Warden cards. First, a general view:
Tumblr media
All cards in different styles made by different artists. But my eyes caught on this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's the same art that was run through AI-editor. And these cards are nearby, in the same game! Maximum disrespect for the work of the artist who made the original art (for DAI btw). The codex contains a few cards with this style, let's see the details:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They all was AI generated. I thought I couldn't be more disappointed in BioWare, but it turns out there is.

Lucanis's Logbook - All 5 Entries
These were my favorite Codex entries to find, they're a great snapshot of Lucanis and Spite's changing relationship as they grew.

Entry 2

Entry 3

Entry 4

Entry 5

Text of all five below, for your easy reference ♡
Entry 1
Lucanis's Logbook, 1
Dawn:
Exercises
Breakfast
Mid-morning:
Weapon maintenance
Inventory
Midday:
Meeting with Neve and Harding (Solas and blighted gods)
Midday meal
Late afternoon:
Exercises
Meeting with Bellara
Evening:
Supper preparations
Correspondence with Crows
Nearing midnight:
Study
Every hour seems accounted for, but it is difficult to know for certain. There was no day or night in the Ossuary. Now, at this Lighthouse, the sky offers little hint to the true time in the world.
Entry 2
Lucanis's Logbook, 2
Dawn:
Exercises
Breakfast
Mid-morning:
Weapon maintenance
Meeting with Neve, Harding, and Bellara (possible movement from gods)
Midday:
Midday meal
Search library
Late after— (the handwriting abruptly alters:)
a PEACE
cut from the ALL
golden stranded weaves
PROTECTION CAGE
keep them OUT keep me IN
(Drawn below is a decagonal diagram of perfectly even, intersecting geometric lines.)
Entry 3
Lucanis's Logbook, 3
scentsing the BEYOND rememburnings from before when one was infinity not a small shade not a SHARP hooked claw in a gut
takemeouttakemeoutletmeout
riiiiiiiip
(The handwriting abruptly alters:)
When did this start? I drifted off. It was after I spoke to Harding. He can't have been here long. The candle was out, but not much lower than when I lit it. It may still be evening. Or he blew it out and it's been hours.
I'll ask Emmrich of Neve for an estimate of the time.
Entry 4
Lucanis's Logbook, 4
Late afternoon:
Exercises
Discussion with Taash (Crows)
Evening:
Inventory with Bellara
Supper preparations
Bellara has ambitious plans for future meals at the Lighthouse, which she leaves to the two of us. I've been tasked with suggesting substitutions where ingredients are not available. Some of her own suggestions are rather inventive and would create a balanced flavor profile. Viago speaks often on the art of masking certain tastes.
Perhaps I should set up a meeting so they can compare notes; perhaps enemies of House De Riva won't last much longer.
Nearing midnight:
- Reading
If l have lost an hour this night, it is only to Rook. But lost is wrong. It is an hour found. An hour more clear than any other.
Entry 5
Lucanis's Logbook, 5 toes wiggle
when he drinks the brew a small shade and a wounded spirit sitting
there is STILL
we are still
Drawn below is a decagonal diagram of perfectly even, intersecting geometric lines.
Additional lines extend past the central diagram and reach the edges of the page.
there is an INFINITE there is a SHELTER
there is a STORM outside the center
The handwriting abruptly alters:
Spite says he went nowhere and it has only been an hour or two. His measurement of time seem more accurate than the others here. So, to resume...
Late Evening:
- Exercises

I find the sheer number of codex entries in Dragon Age II written by Genitivi somehow endearing. The man loved his research, I'll give him that!

I don't know why but this food list in the codex is taking me out and so funny because:
I can tell adventurers like them aren't decent cooks
Solas seems to have had a diet of nothing but salted meat, raisins and honey? Or did he generally run out of rice and bread?
Emmerich seems to be living only on fruit
There's a lack of seasoning in their food, no thyme, cumin or ginger? I could never live in Thedas
I know the wine and expensive coffee beans came from Lucanis. Speaking of wine for the book club, I didn't know?! Did they ever invite my Rook??

Codex Entry: Antivan Mourning Practices
A note in Emmrich’s hand:
I am not familiar with Antivan mourning practices. A lapse in my education, one that must be immediately rectified to better serve our current companions. Perhaps Lucanis has suggestions, or information to share.
The note continues, the ink slightly fresher:
Lucanis recommends I ask Viago and Teia. If Rook is amenable, I will request a trip to Treviso—without any greater understanding, the city itself seems to soothe her. Hopefully, it will do her good in the interim. Until then, I will record what I remember, to be analyzed in context once I have rectified the gap in my knowledge:
ROOK: It’s not the way you would have done it, Varric. [Pause] ROOK: That’s bullshit. How many times have you lived through the world ending? There’s obviously a method to your madness. [Pause] ROOK: Now that’s what I call failing forward. Which I never seemed to get the hang of—I just fail, outright. [Pause] ROOK: Don’t flatter me, Varric—yes, you are! I wouldn’t be your second if your lies worked on me. [Brief Pause] ROOK: Only when you’ve put some work into it. That was a half-assed effort. [Pause, followed by laughter] ROOK: Alright, alright. Take that potion, though, yeah? I can only stand you milking that excuse for so long. [Pause] ROOK: Yes, yes, I’m going. Off to pick up your slack, as always. [End Transcription]
Questions for Viago and Teia:
What is the typical method of communicating with the deceased in Antivan mourning?
Historically, how has Rook responded to grief? Any concerns?
As an assassin, I expect her relationship with death to be frank, but I will hold my assumptions until I know more. I sense no spirits or undue influence in the infirmary, but something is off. Hopefully a conversation with her family will shed light on the matter.

Writing Rambles
There's a lovely feeling when we reach the paella cutscene with Lucanis that the group is finally getting into their groove. It feels like a found family, with trust and rapport built one fade-touched stone at a time.
So naturally, I wanted to explore the opposite of that. How many things can go wrong at once? How can everyone give into their impulses or fall back on old habits in a way that gives the gang a ways to grow, while making as many little nods to lore, existing banter, and honoring the canon?
It was a doozy and this runs long. I don't generally like long codices, but I worked with an editor on this piece and shaved it within an inch of its life. (I like to think it still packs in a whole lot of scenery, despite how efficient I tried to be.) In a perfect world, this kind of writing might live in a few codex entries by different authors, or coexist with an ambient dialogue to let the note breathe a bit.

The Warden Grey codices make me ILL.
Above, three screenshots of a codex entry from Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Transcription below.
Sharksmouth Fort III: The Demon's Fury Excerpt from a Grey Warden Log: As the seer predicted, the eruption of Sharksmouth angered a demon. The demon held us responsible for disturbing its mountain. It tore into our fort full of flame and fury, a horror beyond anything we've fought before. The seer said she could bind the demon to our fort, so it wouldn't endanger others. I intended to stay with her to see the binding spell through, but before I could move, Grey shoved me out and barred the door. He said that protecting the world from a demon was "a job for a Qunari." Then he said something like: "Toh kata, itwafesh." The demon, which we've started calling: "The Fury of Sharksmouth," is now sealed in. Grey and the seer both gave their lives to hold it back. If they hadn't, it might've rampaged all over the coast. With our fort lost to the demon and no darkspawn nearby, we're leaving the area. I've sent word to Weisshaupt: if the Qunari have any more like Grey, the Wardens should be honored to take them. I also reached out to the Qunari, paid my respects, and asked about the Qunlat phrase that Grey said before he died. The Qunari told me that the best translation would be: "In death, sacrifice." Guess you were listening after all, Grey. Added by Davrin: Sounds like a damn good Warden to me.

Letter from Illario
Tumblr media
Cousin. Not his name. Illario does that a lot and I think there’s a reason for that. Impersonal yet intimate, at an arm’s distance yet with that arm is still reaching for him, Illario is asserting the familial connection and drawing on Lucanis's family loyalty as something he knows he can rely on to control him with.
Tumblr media
Illario jumps straight to implying unreliability; he deliberately points to Lucanis's fractured control of Spite before rudely wafting a hand at Lucanis's memory, implying that might be flawed as well.
Tumblr media
Having tied himself to Lucanis's trauma from his capture and their supposed shared loss of Caterina in the previous paragraph, Illario isn't content with that and decides to drive the point further home in this one like the guilty fuck he is. He appeals to their shared history, using nostalgia and a shared memory to make Lucanis feel like shit. "You had more control drunk than you do over that demon, you aren’t yourself anymore" is the message he's trying to drive home (with a side of "stay the fuck away"). I guess we know Lucanis wasn't kidding when he said Illario was a slick talker.
Tumblr media
Sorry, but for the sake of the family is such a dirty kick in the teeth. Who's left? It was the three of them and Caterina's supposed to be dead, so who the fuck is he talking about? House Dellamorte has Crows to its name, but they don’t bear the house name, nor are they family. Yet Illario invokes 'family' to make it personal.

Codex Day 11: Letter from Rook to their love interest
A Letter to The First Talon
No drawings are on this sealed letter. The wax seal is stamped with ‘A.L.M’ for -Althea Loren Mercar- on orange parchment, with hints of lavender in the folds
Dear Lucanis,
As I’m writing this, you’re fast asleep next to me. You look so peaceful… beautiful even. You deserve that and more after everything you’ve gone through. Thank you for trusting me enough to see you this way.
The last few weeks have been so jarring between saving the clan, dealing with Aelius, clearing out Invenci and the Antaam-it’s hard to find a second to breathe. So, this letter is just to say thank you.
From the moment we saved you from The Ossuary, you haven’t left my side. I was nervous at first, that you felt as if you had to, like you owed me a debt. But now, looking back now, I’m so grateful you were there.
In the midst of all this chaos, with the weight of the world possibly ending, to know you were always within an arms reach or deflecting a blow I didn’t see, squeezing my hand through my panic-I wouldn’t have made it this far without you.
And tomorrow, we face the impossible, stopping the gods at Tearstone Island. With you by my side I feel I can conquer anything, and I know you don’t do promises but… I will do everything I can to keep you safe. I vow that to you. We will make it through this together.
You have brightened my life in ways I can’t even describe. To know you is a joy, to be known by you is something I will never take for granted. You have shown me so much patience, love and care, and that extends to Amalia as well. Thank you. You always make things better whether you know it or not. I hope you do. Thank you for being you.
Tomorrow, I’m not sure how things will go, and just in case I don’t have the chance to say:
My heart is yours. It’s been yours since I saw you unlocking the gate in Minrathous.
I love you.
-Althea
