Have you always wanted to learn to draw heads but have a deep-seated fear of circles? Then this is the tutorial for you!
When it comes to drawing the body (particularly the head), for some reason, I’ve always been averse to using round shapes. It’s just that, for me personally, circles, ovals, and the like are just too much of a hassle to draw because there are so many ways you can screw them up. Their deceptive simplicity hides the fact that it demands a puritanical level of precision and also that they don’t give you the same breathing space that you get when drawing triangles, squares, or other angular shapes as said angles allow you to rest a little and assess your progress. I know that’s probably not the case for many of you, but still, I’ve always found it way too easy to mess up drawing circles and ovals, which can distract me easily.
So I invented my own method for drawing heads, which instead uses a series of nice short and sweet curves that allow me (and perhaps you) to draw the head in a much easier fashion.
Step 1: The Face
Tumblr media
So with that said, where do we start? In my opinion, the best place to start is the front of the head (face), getting everything from forehead to chin in a single neat curve. The reason I find it to be more effective than drawing a circle is that your stroke is shorter, meaning there’s less chance of making errors. Completing the face will also establish a foundation that puts you in a better position to map out the rest of your head. Additionally, if you want to use lines to pinpoint where the eyes or nose is, feel free to do so. I've just personally never really needed them.
Step 2: The Base
Tumblr media
With the face dealt with, the next thing to do is to go to the base of the head, starting out from the bottom of the face and going all the way up to where you want the back of the neck to be. With both the face and the base mapped out, you’re now ready to take on (what I think is) the hardest part: the back of the head. But to better accomplish that, you’re gonna do something a little unconventional.
Step 3: The Neck
Tumblr media
Instead of tackling the rest of the head, focus instead on the back of the neck. But rather than drawing the neck up to where the base of the head is, go past it and make a nice long curve that extends right up to where the forehead ends. Bizarre, I know, but I find this to be very helpful because it essentially indicates where the top of the head ends and where the back of the head begins. It also allows you to give a little measurement so you can see if the back of the head is too large or too small.
Last Step: The rest of the head
Tumblr media
And with all that done, you can finish up your head, and whether you want to do the top and back separately or do them both in one single stroke is entirely up to you. Just do that; erase the excess back neck and VOILÀ!!!!!! You have a complete (side view) head!!!

Alright, this time I draw the same character (good old Ralsie) but using different guide lines in the head to see the differences.

What do you think? I liked the first one the best personally, and that's why I retouched it's lines Xp
