Here’s a little Art Tip about a very specific part of the body. Pop a squat and see how it looks on you.

I want to tell a story to the artists and would-be artists out there.
When I was 19, I made a large oil painting of the nerd I would eventually marry. I poured all my attention and care into this painting. It's the only art I have from back then that still holds up as a work I'm proud of today.
I entered it into a judged show at the local art center. It got an honorable mention. I went to see the show with my beloved model. One of the judges came up to talk to me, and highlighted that all the judges really liked the painting. It would have placed, except, you see, the feet were incorrect. They were too wide and short, and if I just studied a bit more anatomy-
I called over my future wife, and asked her to take off her shoe. Being already very used to humoring me, she did. The judge looked at her very short, very wide little foot. Exactly as I'd lovingly rendered it. I would never edit her appearance in any way.
The judge looked me in the eye, and to his credit, he really looked like he meant it when he said "Oh I'm so sorry."
Anyways the moral of the story is that all of those anatomy books that teach you proportions are either showing you averages, or a very specific idea of an idealized body. Actual bodies are much more varied than that.
So don't forget to draw from observation, and remember that humans aren't mass produced mannequins. Delight in our variation. Because it's supposed to be there.

As an artist with a focus on fat and trans bodies, my understanding of the human form comes from seeing variety.
I admire bodies that don't fit into the ideal form, because they are all the more common and all the more ignored.
You can find a million drawings featuring fat bodies that are drawn with the sole purpose of being appealing due to following the ideal form. Whether it be because our eyes have gotten the idea, through repetitive influence, that that form is *ideal*. Or for audiences to lust after.
Finding art depicting variety in body types, in fat distribution and structure, is very.. very hard. Sometimes, if you want to see more of something, YOU ought to be the thing you want to see more of.
If you truly want to be a body positive artist, learning to draw a generally appealing fat body is less than half the battle. Thin bodies have variety in fat distribution and in structure. Fat bodies just accentuate these forms.
Practice the ways fat falls around the body, see how it feels when you let yourself play around with the human form. Have FUN with it.
Learning to stop caring about making bodies look the most appealing to wider audiences has been the most freeing thing for me. Practicing various body types has been very fun, and has improved my understanding of the human form more than anything else possibly could.

Character Bodies 1 - Applying "Shape"
Sometimes when drawing a character you might have a hard time capturing their... character. You might see a drawing like this [clean lined image of Super Sonic] and may not know how the artist got to that point. In this case, it's best to start looking at characters not as a series of lines, but rather as a group of objects. Looking at an officially licensed example of Tails, we'll try to break it up into objects first BEFORE looking at the lines. We'll focus on the body for now [Sonic Riders Tails broken up into sections, red as the head and legs, green as the body] This green section is the main body, notice that I don't include the fur on him, only his body- once that's figured out placing fur will be a breeze. Now we need to imagine what this shape would be if it were a 3-Dimensional object... even though these are drawings, these characters' parts exist on an imaginary 3D space next to each other. Start by taking note of which direction this part [the green body] is facing and draw a line- if this little green blob were now a tube with top and bottom defined, as circles, you can begin to see our 3D object.
Now that you know about Tails'Tube, posing his body will be easier as long as you remember that his body is 3D. Tip: Try practicing keeping a simple shape like this consistent while bending it and posing it every which way.
Placing the limbs onto this object's 3D surface instead of just "drawing legs" will help you with more silly poses that you may not be sure how to pull off. The shocking thing about limbs... they are also tubes, so separate them like the body, take note of their front, and then STOP.
Take note of where on our body object these legs are placed. In the case of Tails, these legs start in the lower corners of Tails' body, and start a bit on the side, not immediately under. Knowing where on that 3D space Tails' legs attach can help you decide how to bend, pose, and exaggerate without the character losing their shape.
*Every character's shape defines their "character" defines their shape- so don't assume every character works the same way, using this process to analyze shape will help you properly understand who it is that you're trying to draw in every style. There are billions of styles that have graced these characters so don't feel like your art has to match IDW* or current gen artwork *note: multiple artists with different styles are within IDW

tutorial idea: how to draw teeth / toothy smiles!! i think teeth are difficult for a lot of artists, esp me. im terrible with drawing smiles with teeth. So I would really appreciate if you made a tutorial for teeth! /gen /nf. Thank you.

Your wish is my command, dear anon!
[Transcript]
->Gums show a little
→ Smiling pushes cheeks out
Mouth corners look like triangles with lil' hooks
A closed-mouth natural smile will show the top teeth only
There are four incisors (the flat ones) followed by a canine & five molars on either side
I usually group the incisons together fon a more stylised look
While smiling, the lips stretch and look thinner
Start with simple shapes and work your way up to detail!

I keep seeing people draw color with the rainbow and a flame instead of what he really should be, SO! I’ve got some images to point out how his flames work
Tumblr media
These are the only colors that should be showing up in his flame. Because he has those soul traits in him, MINUS determination.
His flames also ❌DO NOT❌ change based on his emotions. They are just constantly changing colors!
Tumblr media
His flames also become more soft and harsh and stuff, like this pic ^^^. I see people drawing him all chill with his angy mans flames instead of the smooth ones all the time.
Hope this helps anyone who was thinking of drawing color at some point!!
