tehee a little post to share my thoughts on best ops coz i got nothing better to do at 4 am :3 though I'll just talk of the ops that go up to DP rn.
gonna be generally talking of nightmare mode there unless it doesn't have one or I mention otherwise, also from either a dps or heal perspective (my tanking experience is limited to the dread master arc ops on hm and even then I've only done them once or twice).
but anyway. to start off with ev or kp - i think they're actually kinda neat as ops to start out with, u got your basic mechanics and stuff. even a heal check on some of the bosses, though healing can oftentimes depend on how good the group is at taking damage rather than the encounters themselves. though ultimately I really don't care too much for these and don't find them particularly engaging.
then for the whole dread master arc ops - over time I've kinda grown to loathe SnV personally? I wouldn't say i actually hate it, but you got bosses like olok that are just a drag and then spending over 10 minutes on a "you cannot fight forever" styrak pull only to wipe due to an unlucky failed push during a manifestation rly changes a person. also I'm shit at pushes if I need to do them lol. I find that ops aight as heals tho. warlords are a pretty cool fight also.
then u got ec, can be fun to ie. reflect on as both dps and heals, some cool heal checks if ur healing. neat to do every once in a while but no strong feelings abt it. TfB is pretty fun and I think I prefer it over ec but doesn't mean I'd always wanna go for it over the other (ec def feels more chill..?).
leaving us with df and dp for now - this one is kinda funny bc Brontes might just be my favourite legacy nim fight, but I could also kinda couldn't care less for the other bosses except for maybe draxus (but even him I preferred before the boss hp nerf and r4 gear, from a dps perspective). I also kinda actively loathe grobthok because the magnet (which insta kills on nim) gives me the fear if I'm melee. but Brontes is just a fun fight to try and optimize at least with certain specs and particularly burn is something you can do a lot on (so much fun on IO honestly). anyway compared that to DP - feel like every boss has some fun or interesting things going (although I will say calphy can get a bit annoying esp if you wipe later in the fight and then have to do the phases again which sometimes feel like they drag on). council fight is pretty cool. also getting the timer on dp is extremely satisfying, since its probably the tightest one and you can afford one wipe (or two if its early into a fight) at best. overall I think I like DP out of the legacy ops the most but Brontes individually might be my favourite end boss out of them.
oki that's all might write stuff for the remaining ops tmw 😎

Calphayus - The Outcast
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Imprisoned on Belsavis for over twenty-five years with the other Dread Masters, Calphayus and the others were freed by the Emperor's Wrath and evacuated from Belsavis by the Imperial Guard, quickly launched into a galaxy at war and ripe for the kind of terror and devastation they had caused in the Great Galactic War.
With the death of the Sith Emperor, however, the only power sufficient to keep them in check was gone, breaking their loyalty to the Empire and allowing them to go rogue, forming their own Empire. Calphayus planned to unleash an extragalactic horror banished by the Gree on the Republic and Empire, failing due to the efforts of the Gree's most recent ally, the Barsen'thor.
It was after these failures that Lord Styrak, with a large portion of the Dread Host, moved to Darvannis. However, the combination of several Republic and Sith legends thwarted his efforts there and led to Styrak's death. This unbalanced the Dread Masters and drove them insane, changing their goals from building an Empire to galactic slaughter.
The combined efforts of Strike Team Oricon and the Dread Executioners, aided by the Wrath and Barsen'thor, took down the Dread Masters and their Host, leaving Calphayus alone for the first time in hundreds of years. He surrenders to the custody of the Barsen'thor, knowing from his time inflitrating his mind that he will not be able to resist the chance to redeem a Dread Master.
Transported to a secret holding facility, Calphayus is placed in the care of powerful Jedi at the Barsen'thor's command. Beginning his recovery, his first indication of time passing is when his facility is attacked by Prince Arcann and his Scions of Zakuul. Sensing the Sith Emperor’s mark upon them, and knowing it well, he breaks free of his captivity to assist his guardians in their defence.
The attack is repelled briefly and the remaining defenders give the order to retreat while they can, taking Calphayus with them. It is with these Jedi that he joins the Eternal Alliance to root out one of the galaxy’s biggest evils, much to the surprise of the Wrath and several other members who believed him long dead.

[SEAT OF THE EMPIRE: ORICON]
Oricon was a moon in the Outer Rim Territories just outside the Seat of The Empire. An insignificant world, it was once home to Darth Vitus before its location was lost to the wider galaxy. The moon had a rocky, volcanic surface, and it was left permanently tainted by dark side power due to Sith rituals and alchemy.
During the era of the reconstituted Sith Empire, the Sith Emperor tasked six Sith Lords—Bestia, Tyrans, Brontes, Styrak, Calphayus, and Raptus—with studying the powerful Phobis devices, and sent them to Oricon to do so. When they emerged from their research as the mysterious and powerful Dread Masters, they declared their intention to make Oricon their home, and with the Emperor's blessing, they used thousands of slaves to construct the Dread Fortress as their citadel.
During the Galactic War, the Dread Masters' rebellion against the Empire was brought to end in the Dread War on Oricon, where the remaining Dread Masters were slain within their fortress, with the exception of Calphayus.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Illitha (they/them, transfemme) grew up on Csilla with their twin sister Illami and their parents, Ilvano (father) and Iltana (mother), until they were eight years old and Ilvano reported their Force-sensitivity to the CSP, in the hopes that getting the family exiled would convince his wife to move the family to Ziost so he could take a job at a biowarfare lab run by a Biotics Darth. instead, Iltana took Illitha with her and fled to the Republic (leaving Illami behind in the hopes that Ilvano wouldn't go after the two of them if he had one child still with him). Illitha was taken in by the Jedi and trained by Jaric Kaedan; when they were fourteen, a visit with their mother took a bad turn when pirates attacked. Illitha lost control of their (mildly terrifying) power in trying to defend themself and their mother, and though the pirates died, their mother did as well. they did not admit their role in her death to the Jedi, and this sparked an increasingly bad downwards spiral into interpreting the Jedi Code as extreme repression of all emotion.
they studied as a diplomat through their padawanship, which served them well when they were knighted and sent off into the galaxy - first to stop an ancient Sith plague, which they did, through very judicious and rare applications of the healing ritual and a lot of death, and then as the Republic's representative to the Rift Alliance. their tendency to accept underhanded politics and dirty means as long as the ends were justified and improved/saved lives made them a fearsome negotiator and politician and endeared them to the revolutionary Zenith, though neither they nor Zenith were particularly willing to admit to any kind of closeness or relationship. though they were attempting to walk the tightrope between the light and dark sides of the Force, compassion as an abstract ideal for a whole rather than for the people in front of them meant that Illitha's hunt for the Children of the Emperor got frequently bloody and ended with Syo Bakarn's death on Corellia. they were named a Jedi master and Barsen'thor of the Order, but acquired no additional titles, and continued to serve as a liaison to the Rift Alliance through the resurgent open war that followed Corellia.
Illitha acted as Lana's Republic contact very early on in the Revanite catastrophe, before dropping out of it to work on hunting the dread masters; a series of encounters with Tyrans led to a direct conversation with him about philosophy. through a combination of mental influencing, Illitha's own struggles with their inner fear and repression, and an argument with Zenith in which some... not great things were said, Illitha ended up actively joining the dread masters on Oricon after Styrak's death. though they survived the masters' eventual defeat, they were permanently scarred, and they stayed fairly far away from general society until the Revanite coup got out of hand. they assisted on Yavin and Ziost both before disappearing again with Zakuul's attack. they spent a while on Balmorra with Zenith, coordinating a mostly-Republic alliance against Zakuul; their actions brought them and their network to the attention of Theron, Lana, and Verok Kallig, and they ended up joining the three of them as a founding member of the Alliance. spending a lot of time around multiple Sith led to a few realizations, and the Sith Code actually helped them work through their horrible repression.
currently they are an Alliance Sith with Republic ties serving as a member of Alliance High Command and a politician and mediator.

Killing Your Love Interest (aka F*ck Styrak)
For those of you who haven't played the 'Scum & Villainy' Operation, this fellow is Styrak who - obviously - is one of the Dread Masters.
Tumblr media
Say hello, Styrak.
Tumblr media
Styrak is the final boss of S&V. He also has a big dog with him, so its understandably a tough fight.
BUT - during the fight, he does a total dick move.
He throws an illusion at you and makes you fight your love interest.
TOTAL. DICK. MOVE.
You know how many antagonists have made Corellan fight Kira? Exactly ONE. F*cking Vitiate.
Tumblr media
So here's a screenshot of Corellan preparing to Force Leap on Kira. And not in a fun way, either.
Tumblr media
(Also Nadia, too, for some reason.)
Just ... he's the worst.
Another thank you to @the-sith-in-the-sky-with-diamond and company!

hahahah used Kai Rha to run 8 man S&V with my guild, we had crazy high dps so we
absolutely annihilated all the mobs
killed the wealthy buyer before he even dropped coins
had to fight allll the droids(but wiped the floor with em)
took down the 5 cartel bosses without any deaths (even with a solo healer and a group member who was 72 instead of 75 like the rest of us)
wiped out Dread Master Styrak on all the dps checks in about four seconds
Kai’s item rating went from 272 to 285 from all the gear she picked up over the course of the op and it was such a rush. Only one of us fell to the Bridge of Doom, too.

More random backstory about these three, mostly stuff related to RotHC and the Dread Master storyline (going below the cut because some of the stuff is a bit spoiler-y):
·       Yxo goes to Ilum. It only takes one conversation with Moff Regus planetside for her to turn around and get right back on the shuttle to leave Ilum.
·       She does quietly point the newly appointed Wrath towards Ilum (just because Regus is a racist asshole doesn’t mean she wants the Republic to win)
·       Instead of exploring the Jedi ruins on Ilum, Yxo goes the crack the Eternity Vault (what good is being the head of the sphere of ancient knowledge if you don’t get to be there to see it opened?)
·       Nat and Rhyzur are very eager to take part in “diplomatic negotiations” with Karagga
·       The latest Grand Champion of the Great Hunt is hired to go to Denova and investigate what’s happening there. The information that the Dread Masters have potentially gone rogue is quietly passed to Rhyzur.
·       At this point there is a standing memo that all things Dread Master are sent to Rhyzur
·       Both Rhyzur and Yxo go to investigate Asation. Initially Yxo was going to lead a strike team on her own but, after the events of Denova, Rhyzur suspected the Dread Masters were involved and insisted on coming as well
·       While Rhyzur and Yxo are on Asation, Nat deals with Councilor Torvix and the Black Hole. She later claims this is to prevent Yxo from adding hypermatter to the list of “very toxic things she decided to take a bath in anyways”
·       After Asation, Rhyzur gets a priority call asking for help in Section X. The very large, very angry drouk does nothing to improve her week
·       While Rhyzur is preoccupied, Acina drags Yxo into helping her secure the Dread Seeds (using the excuse of Section X to directly circumvent the known standing memo that all things Dread Master are to go to Rhyzur only)
·       Rhyzur is not amused when she gets back only to find out Yxo nearly got herself killed parkouring around Arcanum. Khem loses babysitting privileges again
·       “I don’t care that she’s nearly 20 and a Dark Council member Khem, it’s your job to keep her from getting herself killed.” -Rhyzur, definitely
·       Nat deals with the Shroud. Rhyzur approves of this because it keeps her occupied and away from the Dread Masters
·       Rhyzur is the one who goes to Makeb. Marr is not prepared for a very angry Nat showing up in his office demanding to know where the hell he sent her partner
·       Marr deeply regrets not sending that bounty hunter to Makeb instead because it definitely would have been worth the credits spent if it meant he didn’t have to deal with a very angry Darth Occlus and child right now
·       The Grand Champion and Rhyzur both lead the strike team on Darvannis. The Grand Champion goes because she’s offended she wasn’t invited, Rhyzur goes because she doesn’t need an excuse to ruin a hutt’s day
·       Styrak being there is an unpleasant surprise.
·       Rhyzur and Nat (Marr learned his lesson) both go to Oricon to deal with the mess there. Rhyzur tries very, very hard to convince Nat to stay behind but after her disappearance to Makeb and general secrecy surrounding the Dread Master business, she refuses
·       Rhyzur has some solid suspicions of just how badly an interaction of Nat with the Dread Master’s power could go. It isn’t until they’re both on Oricon that she realizes how badly she underestimated the severity of the reaction
·       The Dread Master’s brand of madness effects Nat badly. Rhyzur forces her to leave Oricon and sends Ashara with her to take care of her. Khem stays with Rhyzur. Andronikos and Talos take care of Xuqia and they are ordered not to let Nat near her until either Ashara or Rhyzur says it is okay.
·       Marr sends the Wrath to Oricon as well. They help storm the fortress and defeat the remaining Dread Masters
·       Rhyzur feels no small amount of satisfaction for rectifying what she considers her biggest mistake
·       Her connection to the dark side and the amount of time she spent chasing the Dread Masters ends up teaching her their “fear” ability
·       She swears that knowledge of this ability will die with her and is not amused by the fact she starts the be referred to as “Dread Master Rhyzur” instead of “Darth Nox” (this one is directly lifted from the fact that in HM/NiM you literally take the Dread Master’s thrones to defeat them and that the NiM timed title is Dread Master)

Reverse unpopular opinion: the Dread Masters, Jace Malcom, and the Agent story.
the dread masters
i love the Masters as villains because they are one of the few places in swtor where bioware make no attempt to paste in a Sad Backstory. they’re just bad people who became substantially and significantly worse over time. there’s also plenty of hypocrisy empire side wrt the empire’s tolerance and even praise of them up until they decide to skip town and do their own thing, at which point they suddenly cannot be suffered to live. we love to see it.
i also really enjoy their boss fights. facing the Designated Love Interest as styrak, the role checks in raptus, prophecy breaking in calphayus, etc. they’re fun.
jace malcom
i know i’ve said similar things about satele but the same applies to jace: he was not a bad/absent/deadbeat father, because he was never given a chance to be a father - that decision was made for him and without his even being aware it was to be made. everything we’ve seen of him (pre iokath, at any rate) with theron shows him to be someone who wants to do right by his son and make up for the time lost. a better dad than 90% of dads in swtor. we stan
the agent story
i think one of the things i love the most about the agent story is how connected it is with the rest of the game - both the planetary stories and the class stories. yes, even the tire fire that is the jk story. it doesn’t just hang together well with itself but it attempts to glue the rest of the stories together to form a coherent whole (even the tire fire that is the jk story), to fill in the details and questions teased elsewhere (what was nok drayen’s real game? why are there even the twi’leks on tython anyway? why other than the usual reasons fash regimes are suicidal is the empire acting so stupid on corellia? etc). it helps that i adore chessmaster villains and jadus, while a despicable human being, is up there (at least as far as bioware chessmasters go, anyway)

Kedu Iskejarim
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kedu's life followed the path of any Force-sensitive pureblood from a young age. he grew up in various academies and training under some of the best tutors in the galaxy. when it came time, he went to Korriban to establish himself as a Sith - meeting Vasmi na'Dreshdae, a pureblood heir far above his station, and making various semi-serious attempts to seduce her - before he left for Dromund Kaas again. clever and vicious, Kedu outstripped his rival apprentices until they banded together and made a pact to kill him.
injured but alive, Kedu flees to Hutt space to escape, and after years in hiding, he is picked up - masked and disguised as just another bounty hunter - by Braden's team as a Great Hunt candidate. he is victorious and goes on to grow his reputation even more, becoming one of the most renowned bounty hunters in the galaxy. his skill and renown eventually earn him the attention of Vasmi once more - this time, acting in her capacity as the Wrath and hiring him to infiltrate Darvannis in an attack on Dread Master Styrak. the attack succeeds, but Kedu is injured and forced to reveal his true identity to Vasmi.
naturally, the moment he's no longer injured, he goes right back to flirting with her. the pair's involvement becomes something more than subtext soon, and though Kedu doesn't leave his career as a bounty hunter, he works more and more closely with Vasmi and the Jen'ari she serves.

Riisa's career in espionage began when she was recruited to the Csilla Secret Police at fourteen. she met Elshe'reth shortly after, while they were both trainees, and the two of them started off as partners (as they were the only ones who could keep up with each other) before eventually becoming girlfriends. they worked together for several years on Csilla before an op took them to Copero and Riisa's latent Force-sensitivity led her to find an ancient rakata star map being kept by House Inrokini. the mess that came to light after this discovery led to Riisa and Elshe'reth being sent to the Empire. after training and a few missions as an agent, Riisa was named Cipher Eight and sent out as part of the attempt to stop the Eagle's terror network; when Elshe'reth was reassigned to work under Grand Moff Kilran, Riisa took over and was the one to set off the Eradicators in the name of stopping Jadus.
the affects of that decision took their toll, however, and when Riisa was sent to work as a triple agent under Ardun Kothe, she defected properly and began reporting back to him as a proper double agent, hiding her actual allegiances well. in the middle of all this, some complicated events with Elshe'reth led to Riisa having a fling with Aristocra Saganu on Hoth; she ended up with a daughter, Miurani'var'ieth, who she left with Saganu to raise and got to know mostly via comms.
after being part of a small group responsible for killing Dread Master Styrak on Darvannis, Riisa was promoted to Keeper, where she continued to report to Ardun Kothe as Legate until after Zakuul attacked. her cover was finally blown and though she was able to enact contingencies, she was taken prisoner by Darth Aedis, one of the two Sith Empresses, and taken to Aedis' Korriban stronghold for torture and interrogation. Elshe'reth rescued her, and the two of them reconciled after returning to Odessen. they currently serve Alliance Intelligence under Theron Shan and have a family.

(So uh, I realized that I contradicted myself about how Ursulina found out about her heritage, and how many other people know about it.  So I guess this is me retconning it.)
Ursulina hadn’t slept in a week.  It felt longer, but she would get through it.  She was tired of the nightmares, of two shadowy figures looming over her.  She would call out to them, demanding to know what they wanted, only to be laughed at.  She needed answers, so she could finally get rest.
“Mom, you need to relax,” D’leah led her to the couch in her parents’ living room.  “Take a nap.  We have some free time for once.  Enjoy it.”
Ursulina sat down with a heavy breath.  “The nightmares...it’s almost like the ones I had when I was little.  I only remember a man and a woman, and I couldn’t make out their faces.”
“Sith are always out to get Jedi.”
“Adira’s half-sister isn’t, and you know she isn’t.”
“Okay, most Sith.  They were probably Vitiate’s enforcers trying to study you, test your limits.  Let’s meditate.”
The two Jedi then sat on the floor and began to meditate.  This was routine for many Jedi, be they in distress or not.  Meditation helped focus, guide, calm--
And then the room got very cold, and both women had a crawling feeling over their skin.  Ursulina’s eyes snapped open and she drew her lightsaber.  “Show yourself.”
A tall, muscular man in ornate red and black robes, with skulls as pauldrons appeared before her.  He was accompanied by a petite, fit woman with the same robes.  Both wore intricate, unique golden masks covering their visages.
“Styrak and Brontes,” Ursulina spoke, her voice cautious.  “So you’re the cause behind all this.  What do you want?”
Neither of them replied, only circled around the Barsen’thor.  This was...odd.  The Dread Masters were not known to go on rants like some Sith,  D’leah remembered listening to Darth Angral rambling on about wanting to destroy Tython.  But as her adoptive mother and Major Medora had reported after the trip to Denova, these particular Sith were well-spoken and to the point.  And they were very creepy.
The Miraluka with hair of flame brandished her lightsaber.  “I think my mother asked a question.”
“So very impatient.  So very curious.”  Brontes had an elegant, falsely gentle voice.  “I am a curious woman myself.”  She turned to Ursulina.  “We did not wish to startle you, only to confirm what we felt in the Force.”
“What nonsense are you going on about?  Still angry about Kephess?” Ursulina’s kept herself calm, but something was very off.
The two Sith looked at each other, then began to remove their masks.  “No, my dear,” replied Brontes.  “Look and tell me what you see.”
The face, especially the chin, the cheekbones, and the eyebrows...no, there was no way.  Ursulina looked at Styrak.  The eyes, the forehead...
D’leah could sense her mother’s confusion and distress.  “What in the blazes are you--”
“Idiot child!” snapped Styrak, dropping his composure.  “We are your parents, Jedi, and you will be coming with us.”
Ursulina felt like the room was going to swallow her whole.  She almost wished it would, but she had a duty.  She knew they weren’t lying; she could sense it.  “No.  I am not going anywhere with you, manipulators.”
“Search your feelings, daughter,” Styrak hissed.  “You know it is true.”
“No, I am a Jedi before ever being your child.”  Ursulina swung her dualsaber about her, but her parents vanished as quickly as they appeared.  She looked around, her breaths heavy.  Her knees turned to jelly as she sank to the floor.
D’leah rushed to her weeping mother’s side.  “Mom...it’s okay.  Everything will be okay.”
How in the hell were they going to explain this to their crews?  Doc and Rusk didn’t need to know, and Doc would only make stupid jokes about it anyway.  But Ursulina couldn’t lie to her husband Felix, and Nadia, Kira and Scourge could sense the dark side.  Teeseven...the droid loved everyone.
Ursulina dried her eyes on the back of her sleeve.  “I need rest.”

Where are we headed next?
During the Copero flashpoint we get a glance at the map you see in the first picture. It rotates a bit, and the last we see is the destination somewhere on the lower part.
But when we take a closer look at shape of the core worlds in the middle, we see the map is upside down in comparison to the Galaxy Map ingame.
When we check the upper right corner of the Galaxy Map, that’s where Oricon is located.
Which makes kind of sense? From the Wookieepedia article about Oricon:
During the era of the reconstituted Sith Empire, the Sith Emperortasked six Sith Lords—Bestia, Tyrans, Brontes, Styrak, Calphayus, and Raptus—with studying the powerful Phobis devices, and sent them to Oricon to do so. When they emerged from their research as the mysterious and powerful Dread Masters, they declared their intention to make Oricon their home, and with the Emperor's blessing, they used thousands of slaves to construct the Dread Fortress as their citadel.
Sounds like a good place to search for a superweapon.

the main storyline for oricon happens outside of the operations. the operations are literally just killing the bosses (the Masters themselves) - the actual story bits are a soloable chain in the daily area. if you want to know more about the details of the fights then you can always look up guides or youtube of the fights but honestly i just take them as a starting point for my own takes on them.
the one part you will miss without doing any operations is the stuff on darvannis with styrak, which occurs purely in the operation, but again you can easily look up guides or videos.
the section X daily area on belsavis and the seeker droid questline also cover the dread war! section X doesn’t have an overarching storyline like oricon/ossus/etc, there used to be a breadcrumb/intro story quest but that may or may not have been removed (memory is currently failing me as to its current status).
the seeker droid questline is largely soloable except for the final mission, which i know in theory used to be soloable but that was before they changed level scaling stuff in 4.x. you can pick the seeker droid questline up either from questgivers on makeb or a droid on the fleet.
edit: tl;dr dread masters storyline after belsavis, this time in chronological order
section X daily area (only open to subs or with a pass from the cash shop)
seeker droid storyline (available to anyone with makeb expansion, questgivers on makeb and fleet, meet acina before she was famous)
scum & villainy (darvannis operation)
oricon daily area story quests
oricon daily area
oricon operations (dread fortress/dread palace)
normally I skip the belsavis planetary arc on both factions because I always want to finish as fast as possible when I reach act 3 but I’ve started it with ana maite so I guess she’s about to deal with the dread masters and have that bite her in the ass later
