Dreaming Network (Version 0.0), a game made in collaboration for Dream Diary Jam 8
You play as small robot in an abandoned facility who spends all day exploring digital worlds. Currently this is a really small and rough version (sorry if there's any bugs!), but there are plans to update it in the future!

Swan Song - Dream Diary Jam 8 Update
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Swan Song, a YNFG I originally made for last year's Dream Diary Jam, has now been updated for this year's Dream Diary Jam. The size of the game has effectively been doubled from its previous version, with new areas, effects, and a new story-related item to collect.
If you have constructive feedback, I want to hear it. Also, if there are any bugs, please let me know! Special thanks to collaborators *MP* and PorcelainPlanetarium for their continued work on the game's music and sounds.

here we go, reaction part 1 to dreamies' 8th year anniversary stream
usually the timing of the live translated subtitles is off which makes it hard to follow so i usually wait for the 'official' youtube upload to be subbed.
dreamie dolls <3
Tumblr media
jamming to best friend
why are markno sitting so close together. like all the other guys are sharing seats but somehow they look a lot closer. did they just get a small seat lmao
Tumblr media
i feel like he does this every time (calling himself as many years old as dream is)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pretty puppy
Tumblr media
classic jaemin who can't say hello normally and jisung who worries for jaemin's image
Tumblr media
actual infant park jisung
Tumblr media
they're all eight years old today
Tumblr media
round boi
Tumblr media
new ring?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh why is that, haechan? :3
Tumblr media
chenle keeps leaning over onto jisung's armrest
Tumblr media
chenle talked about filming the mv for their new song but i'm not sure if this was legitimately an unexpected spoiler or if they were meant to promote it
貼貼捏捏
Tumblr media
oh ok rains in heaven was already released so it's not a spoiler
they're doing cake cutting first?
they told jisung to light the candle and then being all dramatic. i think the staff projected a message to jisung to light the "8" candle and also watch out for the balloons lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
afterwards the lights went dim and they played happy birthday lmao. party time
Tumblr media
??? chenji nation what is going on??? i had heard there was some stuff going on between them in this live but i had held off on spoilers lol
Tumblr media
jisung said he was trying to escape the image (of being the clumsy) one and taking on all of the practical tasks. but he couldn't pick up the cake and jaemin did it for him lol. jaemin always being his safety net.
Tumblr media
acrostic poem time
and then fan comments time
before the live they were assigned missions and secret santas
ohhhhhh that's why haechan is being sus
Tumblr media
dreamies being talkative is my favourite running joke
jisung suggested that dream was aiming for a cute image and chenle was like "this coming from the guy who never does aegyo" so haechan was like "jisung close up please" and jisung had to do the gyu
they started talking over each other when discussing whether to put greed or obsession or some other answer as what dream does best
um...so chenle mentioned his fight with jeno and jisung...your hand...
Tumblr media
markno and chenji food for me
Tumblr media
jisung: we need to have fights from time to time so we have stories to tell
chenle's entire body is facing jisung okay. markno marrieds aren't doing any better on the other side.
Tumblr media
chenle WINKU
Tumblr media
apparently the dreamies were super chatty as trainees too? XD apparently they'd rant to each other?
jisung is so excited at the thought of receiving fanmail? there are three of these diaries with fan messages :o
Tumblr media
lol the guys being shocked at the fans' neat writing
jisung cracking up over a poop joke followed by silence X'D
mark: painful knee mark: dirty knee mark: bleeding ni mark: 我愛你 mark:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they keep leaning into each other's space............
Tumblr media
mark: is friendship a sort of love? chenle: friendship is a sort of love haechan: then you love me? chenle: ...ya haechan: 💘
Tumblr media
fan: chenle is cooler than stephen curry chenle: no
now they're going to write their own messages for the friendship book

HBO Max New Releases:. July 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
LeBron James might be out of the NBA playoffs, but he’s still angling to be a big part of the summer entertainment season. That’s because HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by a very special sequel.
Space Jam: A New Legacy premieres on July 16. will find LeBron teaming up with the Looney Tunes in a Warner Bros. IP-extravaganza. Can ‘Bron and the Looney Tunes beat the Goon Squad before Warner Bros.’ server steals LeBron “Bronny” Jr.’s soul (or something)? Let’s hope so. The two other major WB releases this month, No Sudden Move and Tom and Jerry in New York, both come to HBO Max on July 1.
HBO Max is also bringing some fun TV shows to its stream this month. The long-awaited Gossip Girl revival premieres on July 8. That will be followed by Mike White’s satirical limited series The White Lotus on July 11. Ronan Farrow’s excellent book Catch and Kill gets a docuseries adaptation on July 12.
July 1 will see the arrival of library titles like Planet of the Apes, Reservoir Dogs, and Scream. Recent hit Judas and the Black Messiah comes to HBO Max on that date as well. It’s a good month for geek TV with the Doctor Who 2020 Christmas Special (July 1), Nancy Drew season 2 (July 3), and Batwoman season 2 (July 27) all coming home to their streaming residence.

I’ve spent the course of COVID lockdown cycling through hyperfixations while also trying to engage in some much needed therapy (lolsob), and I’ve been essentially encouraging myself to try and do more things I can enjoy without feeling shame. Anyway, that’s a short way of saying I decided to blog about all the music videos of Depeche Mode for reasons of science.
The science is that my basic premise is that most of the videos are pretty bad in ways that I find to be pretty strange. Full disclosure is that I spent my teen years being a huge Cure fan and there’s an overlap there? Of songs with very niche high-concept ideas that don’t necessarily map onto a model of popular music but found mainstream success in the rise of new wave music in the wake of the collapse of first wave punk and amplified by the creation of music videos and music video TV. And I owned all the Cure music videos and played them on my iPod Nano because I was a very strange child. But to get back to my central thesis, many of The Cure’s videos are very stylised and fun and memorable in ways that are good. And yet, despite existing in the same sphere and having an overlap of fans, the music videos for Depeche Mode mostly stay bad until the end of the eighties, a fact I will prove by watching them all.
Can you tell that I am bored because i have lost my job and my mental health is making me fixate on strange shit currently because that is absolutely the case right now
Speak & Spell
Dreaming of Me (Feb 1981)
Tumblr media
The single art is really lovely - the red/yellow contrast is very striking against the white, and I really love the design. Hey remember when people used to go out and buy singles and you would appreciate them and the work that went into them? I don’t think I’ve bought a physical single since I was about sixteen. I used to buy them from the Woolworths music department because it was cheap and all my friends worked there, so they had a pretty lenient attitude about what exactly constituted paying for things. Woolworths policy of only hiring teenagers is probably what destroyed their business.
Anyway, Dreaming of Me did not chart super well, getting to number 57 and having no official music video - or actually getting onto the album. It wasn’t included on Speak & Spell in the UK until the 2006 re-release. So, there was no music video for me to look at…
Apart from this video I found from local TV in 1981 to promote the song. It’s a maybe-music video. Because music videos had only been around for about six years and MTV didn’t exist until later in the same year, my guess is that Mute Records were pretty cautious about putting money into a medium that might cost more than they would get in publicity. That’s only a guess. I don’t have a crystal ball for forty years ago.
Anyway, here are some children recording music.
Tumblr media
If i was 19 and someone offered me a recording contract I would have taken it without thinking (like i took on all those student loans without thinking through any consequences wompwomp) but now I am nearly thirty I watch this and think, ‘These children shouldn’t be outside unaccompanied’. The passage of time has made a fool of me.
Tumblr media
They go bowling and play Space Invaders which, hey, still sounds like a great night out to me, but I’m guessing that because this is very clearly aimed at teenagers the TV producers didn’t want to encourage teen drinking by showing them performing a gig at a club night.
Tumblr media
I call it high fashion. The all-grey really sells it.
Tumblr media
This reminds me so much of a advice column in teen magazines - when they’d have problems set out in a little faux-comic strip of still photos? ‘My best friend stole and read my diary’ ‘My crush found out about how I feel and now he’s going out with my best friend’, that sort of thing. That is also a classic carpet pattern. I think my grandma’s living room had that carpet.
Tumblr media
The video is very naive! It’s the sort of thing we would all see now on Youtube from bands just starting out and it is wild to me that this went out on TV. It’s very un-glossy and normal, the stuff that bands put out on YouTube now because of DIYness.
New Life (June 1981)
Tumblr media
This is also a really great piece of single art. It’s very bold and striking - it would definitely be the standout record in a sea of other 7’’ released the same week. It also doesn’t particularly match the tone of the single but eh, it looks pretty cool. New Life did much better than Dreaming of Me and got up to number 11 in the UK singles chart. Still no official music video, but the charting meant that the band got onto Top of The Pops! ToTP was cancelled when I was a wee baby teen, because the BBC decided to stop caring about yoof viewership and promoting music was circling the drain everywhere as streaming hit, but it was the place to promote music so was definitely a sign that You Had Made It.
Tumblr media
So, last video was silly and made by children, but now they’re wearing see-through mesh shirts, leather trousers, and leather hats with a design that I am a little bit dubious about. I grew up on the oi/punk scene and let me tell you about how many first wave punks wear iconography of bad regimes for faux edginess reasons because I met a LOT of them in my time.
Tumblr media
Oh boy do i have thoughts about that hat. It also looks like a Leather Daddy hat which, well, let’s leave that thought to one side. Most ToTP performances were lipsynced. Playing things live would sound weird in the studio, be picked up strangely by the audio equipment and the cameras, so 99% of performances were mimed to the single. Now, some acts would deliberately play up to the pretence and refuse to act like they were doing anything that corresponded to the song - The Jam, The Communards, and The Cure are literally the first examples that come to mind who would just… not do anything close to pretending it was real.
This is not that. It is very earnest and awkward and serious, which sort of makes it very sweet.
Just Can’t Get Enough (September 1981)
Tumblr media
Right, that is shibari, isn’t it? I’m not blind, am I? It’s a very striking image that 99.9% of people would not recognise other than being a striking black and white image.
I don’t think I can overstate how… innocent, in a way, this point of time was? As in the general level of knowledge about non-conventional stuff in the wider public at large. As in my mother, an almost teen at this point, saw George Michael walking with his boyfriend in central London and had no idea he was gay until he came out. It’s actually the widest cultural gulf I can think of between her teen years and my teen years because I was very aware of queer people from a young age.
Anyway, moving on, I feel like it bears repeating that this song fucking slaps. It’s the last single to be written by Vince Clarke and the last single until 2006 to be written by someone other than Martin Gore. This is one of those songs that just works on every level. Can you imagine coming up with this for the first album of your band? That blows my mind. It’s so overpoweringly good that it was probably for the best that it was saved for last - coming out the gate with a guaranteed fucking banger was been the nail in the coffin for a lot of other eighties synth/electronica bands. They scored a huge hit and then nothing after that managed to be as good or meet the hype. Depeche Mode had built up a far bit of radio play and interest before dropping this which turned out to be very good in the long run!
This got to number 8 on the UK charts and the first to get a music video! It is the only one with Vince Clarke. Full disclosure in that I had this song on my iPod through downloading the video to my computer (that’s how we got songs without using stuff that would give us viruses because i got a ton using bearshare for rare cure demos) and I remember watching the video, all of sixteen years old, and thinking, ‘Man, all these people look so grown up, compared to me, I can’t wait to be an adult!’.
Twelve years have changed my view, somewhat.
Tumblr media
Look at this little baby man. Were you in one of my A Level classes - as in, ones that I have taught, not ones that I have been in.
Tumblr media
Vince Clarke, however, has had a significant glow up in the six months and now looks like he is the bouncer in a leather bar. This is the One Adult in the room.
Tumblr media
Ahh, I see it’s Open Mic Night at the local leather bar. You know what I was saying about how teens in the eighties tended to be significantly more naive about what we might call certain signifiers? Because what this outfit says to me, a queer woman in 2020, is susbstanitally different than to my mum and her friends watching this when it first came out. She would read this as ‘This is totally rebellious and cool!’ while I go ‘Someone just joined the university kink club and spent all their bursary’.
Tumblr media
I don’t remember the member of Blazin’ Squad that wore a slave harness. (Now, there’s a reference that shows my age. A Blazin’ Squad reference in the year of Our Lord 2020. Hoooo boy.)
Tumblr media
I read somewhere (that I can’t find now because, of course I can’t) that these are the band’s girlfriends and I always remembered that because it made me think, lol, same. One of my closest friends is the Head of London, so she’s in every band in London and if she’s not in yours yet give her time, and my partner was in a locally successful metal/hardcore band for about a decade and being connected with any sort of band means you will be helping out hugely behind the scene constantly. I have held lights, moved speakers, picked up instruments, been in music videos, and have bought tearaway trousers and glowsticks for gigs. You get called in to help all the time which is a lot of fun, so that fact always just stuck with me. It also makes sense financially because then you don’t have to hire any professional backing dancers, you can rely on people who will happily do it for free (while looking pretty rad while doing it!).
Anyway, the band look like those generic raiders that you run into when randomly walking across the map in a Fallout game.
Tumblr media
I love awkward choreography in music videos. It feeds me.
Tumblr media
Filming a night out provides A) Great footage and B) Can be done for limited overheads, leaving more money to be put into promotion.
I always like seeing this sort of footage in music videos. I tend to see a lot of it, given the DIY punk scene, and it always charms me. I am easy to please. And all those women have the most amazing eye makeup that makes me super jealous because it all looks so good.
Tumblr media
That hat is on point. This looks like a still image for some sort of cyberpunk big band style swing revival that, sadly, lives only in my dreams.
Tumblr media
It took me so goddamn long to screenshot this shot probably because i was also blasting dream nails whoops
Anyway those are my reactions to Speak & Spell’s one solitary music video with some other things thrown in and this took me way too long. I make myself laugh though, that’s the main thing. I will do A Broken Frame… at some point. I think I have a bunch of vinyl for A Broken Frame? My mum actually bought all the singles for that album and I stole most of her collection years ago. I will have to search and see what I can find.

______________________________________________
Part 1
It was a early Monday morning on the Nelson's house and Carter was still sleeping, school was definitely the last place he wished to go today. But then, as Rae was silently opening his door, he already knows he would have to go anyway.
"Honey, it's time to wake up" She said softly and then sat at the edge of his bed.
"Mom please, just 5 more minutes" Carter groaned, placing his sheet over his head.
"Carter, I already gave you 5 more minutes. Now wake up, your dad is making pancakes and sticky waffles as you like". Rae stated firmly.
"Hmm, alright" He sat down on his bed and then he stretched, with his eyes still closed. "I'll just take a quick shower".
"Alright, but don't delay, is almost 7:30". Rae informed her son. He nodded and then she head downstairs to help Finn with the breakfast.
So Carter stood up and as always in the morning, he placed his favourite album to play: Night Visions by Imagine Dragons. Then he picked up some clothes on his wardrobe and then he head to bath, but of course, not after sending a message to his girlfriend, Amanda.
Once he finished his bath, about 20 minutes later, he then head downstairs, founding his mom and dad chatting. He always loved to see how great his parents get along, after 20 years together, he still can see how his dad looks at his mom, the way she blush at the slightest compliments his dad always gives her. It's so sweet, but even though he's young, he can't imagine living such a great love like this for his own.
"Hi mom, hi dad" Carter gives Rae a kiss on the cheek and gives Finn an hug, before wenting to pick up his favourite mug on the kitchen cupboard.
"How this morning is been treating you?" Finn asked, knowing deep down how first days sucks. He's also in a first day, he got called to be DJ on the new radio of Manchester, the Supernova Tunes. He couldn't be any happier to finally reach his biggest dream.
"It would be better if the vacations weren't over". Carter shrugged as he jammed his waffles.
"But you'll see your friends, Amanda will also be there..." Rae smiled, trying to cheer him up.
"I know, I just wished to stay here, practicing my music a little bit". Carter explained. His fingers were all calloused after practicing music during the holidays. His parents good taste in music is always helping him a lot.
"But when you came back, you can practice as much as you want son". Finn comments.
"Your dad is right, I might sing to get along with you". Rae added, pulling a smile from Finn's face.
"I can even borrow your Oasis cd dad?" Carter asks.
"As long as you take care well" Finn started and then he glanced at his clock, he was getting late. "Fuck, is almost 8, I need to meet Francis on her office before the show". Finn got up, sipping the last of his coffee in a faster gulp. "You'll take a ride with me Cart?".
"Nah, I'll meet Amanda on the bus stop. Thanks dad" Carter grinned at Finn.
"Alright, I'll go now". Finn started to pick his things: cellphone, charger, deodorant and placed it all on his backpack. "Bye guys, I love you both".
"Bye dad, enjoy your first day" Carter stood up, giving his dad a tight hug.
"I love you dickhead" Rae jokes, making Finn laugh.
"You are a dickhead". Finn kisses her briefly and then whispered something on her ear that makes her blush hard. "And hey, I'll bring japanese food for dinner". Finn said briefly and then he left, riding the same scooter since he was 16.
So Carter finished his breakfast and then Rae offered him a ride, which he didn't refused.
"Bye mom, I love you" Carter gives Rae a kiss on the cheek when they get on the bus station, where Amanda said she would get in 10 minutes.
"I love you, send kisses for Amanda". Rae said as Carter opened the car's door.
"Alright, have a good day mom" Carter added with a smirk on his face.
After Rae drove away, he placed his headphones and pressed play on his rock playlist on Spotify while he waited for Amanda. All he truly wanted right now was to spend the rest of the day playing his guitar and singing his favourite tunes. With music he can feel alive, powerful. Music is all he have on his body and as long as Carter Nelson still alive, music is all he'll make.

I was tagged by @icedchailatte, people like never tag me in these things I feel so honored lmao.
Don’t feel obligated by any means if you’re in this list, but I’m tagging @pumpkin-queef @msblam @cydoniadreamland @flaccid-robot-penis @borjaxton @lethargicthylacine @coffeeofthegay
1. Do you prefer writing with a black pen or blue pen? Black.
2. Would you prefer to live in the country or city? Country, then I could have sheep!
3. If you could learn a new skill what would it be? Fencing! I took a week long fencing class once when I was little and have wanted to get into it more since.
4. Do you drink your tea/coffee with sugar? I drink coffee with a blinding amount of sugar, but with tea it really depends. Usually some sugar but not much.
5. What was your favourite book as a child? Not to be a furry on main but the warrior cats books were my JAM.
6. Do you prefer baths or showers? Showers. I used to prefer baths but then someone pointed out to me that bathing is stewing in your own filth and now I’m grossed out by them. Do love bath bombs tho.
7. If you could be a mythical creature, which one would it be? Does shapeshifter count? That would be best for my indecisive ass.
8. Paper or electronic books? Paper. The physical thing just hits different yknow?
9. What is your favourite item of clothing? Either a Ghost band shirt I have, since they’re one of my fave bands and my partner gave it to me, or this t-shirt I got from a friend with a smug looking frog face that says “yikes” on it.
10. Do you like your name or would you like to change it? Already changed it baybee ;)
11. Who is a mentor to you? I have a friend who’s like a master class level cosplayer who’s slowly but surely teaching me The Ways Of The Cosplayer™️.
12. Would you like to be famous and if so, what for? Sometimes I think so, I’d love to make a huge number of people happy either by being funny or with my art, plus I’d love to be able to help spread awareness and end stigmas through fame, but then I remember how paranoid all that attention would make me. Long story short, no.
13. Do you consider yourself a romantic person? Not really, but I can be if I wanna be.
14. Which element best represents you? Personality quizzes reliably tell me earth, so earth I guess?
15. Who do you want to be closer to? My friends from college. We never talk unless it’s in person and I don’t get to see them much :(
16. Do you miss someone at the moment? Yeah. I cut ties with my old Favorite Person (a thing related to BPD) about 1 1/2 years ago because she’s toxic af, I still regularly think about/miss her.
17. Tell us about an early childhood memory. When I was 11 I pulled out my two front teeth (not baby teeth, the actual legit ones) pulling open a drawer with my mouth while pretending to be a cat. I had to get a root canal to put them back in place, and was a lil celebrity at my dentist for years because of it. All the dentists loved root canal cat kid xD.
18. What is the strangest thing you have eaten? My childhood house is so dusty I could (and regularly did) catch dust in my mouth like snowflakes until I learned what it was.
19. What are you most thankful for? How well my transition has gone so far/the fact I’m able to transition at all.
20. Do you like spicy food? I desperately want to cause so much food from other cultures is spicy, but my acid reflux prevents me from building much of an immunity to it so I’m way too much of a wuss.
21. Have you ever met someone famous? I shook Bill Nye’s hand when he visited my hometown for a talk.
22. Do you keep a diary or journal? Yes, for therapy mostly, but I usually forget to write in it.
23. Do you prefer to use a pen or a pencil? Pencil. I goof way too much to not be able to erase.
24. What is your star sign? Virgo. I don’t care about or believe in astrology at all tho.
25. Do you like your cereal soggy or crunchy? Crunchy, I’m no heathen.
26. What would you want your legacy to be? I just wanna be known for being helpful.
27. Do you like reading, what was the last book you read? I love reading, but haven’t regularly since early high school. Last book I read was a wholesome manga called Merman In My Tub. I recommend it.
28. How do you show someone you love them? I usually send them lots of things related to stuff they like and make gifts for them.
29. Do you like ice in your drinks? Absolutely.
30. What are you afraid of? Spiders (not nearly as much as I used to be thanks to exposure therapy), ticks, parasites, death, confrontation, losing my friends.
31. What is your favourite scent? Probably either rose or campfire.
32. Do you address older people by their name or surname? First name unless they tell me otherwise.
33. If money was not a factor, how would you live your life? I’d live on a commune with my close friends. We wouldn’t be totally self sufficient, but we’d grow/make at least half the food and clothes we use. I’d come as close to having a private zoo as a person can actually ethically do without cramping/neglecting the animals. I’d play video games more than I worked. I’d regularly house people with nowhere to go. I’d sell sewing commissions and work somewhere like an animal rescue facility. A guy can dream 😔.
34. Do you prefer swimming in pools or the ocean? Pools. If I think too much about how much poop has to be in any natural body of water it sets off my OCD (I’m fine if I forget to think about it tho).
35. What would you do if you found $50 on the ground? Keep it. There’s no way to track who’s it is, if there was I’d try to return it.
36. Have you ever seen a shooting star? A few times.
37. What is the one thing you would want to teach your children? I don’t want kids, but if I did I’d want to teach them how to recognize differences in cultural practices without putting value judgements on them.
38. If you had to have a tattoo, what would it be and where would you get it? I already have one (zelda tattoo on my shoulder), and am planning many more. Next one I want is a paw print from my cat on my stomach where he likes to knead.
39. What can you hear now? The wind in the trees outside, the fan, my partner shifting his feet, I think cicadas?
40. Where do you feel the safest? The living room when I’m alone in the house, listening to music and snuggling with my cat.
41. What is the one thing you want to overcome/conquer? Either my misophonia or my fear of confrontation.
42. If you could travel back to any era, what would it be? Pre-colonialism North America. I’d love to see this continent in its not fucked up state.
43. What is your most used emoji? Tie between 🅱️, :’) and 😬
44. Describe yourself using one word. Clown.
45. What do you regret the most? Never standing up for myself or my friends as a kid/teen.
46. Last movie you saw? Hamilton. Very good but also overrated.
47. Last tv show you watched? Something I don’t remember the name of on PBS about octopi.
48. Invent a word and it’s meaning. Schlumple. It’s like when you’re sitting slumped and squished in on yourself you’re sitting all schlumpled. My rats do it all the time.

Best albums of 2019
Tumblr media
I am a strong believer in belated music lists. Hindsight! The past year was stressful for me even before COVID-19 broke, and my favorite music was on average noisier and more irritating than usual. I find comfort and excitement in a mischievous sensibility; if music as chaotic and unpleasant as Jpegmafia’s can hold together, maybe there’s hope yet.
1. 100 Gecs, 1000 Gecs
I’m addicted to everything that I see, yeah! Including screamo death growls, Auto-Tuned cackles, comically heavyhanded drops, pop-punk bangers in disguise, secretly tender love confessions, insanely catchy hooks, and flimsy guitar trash. This marvelous album throws every absurd pop trope of the past decade into a kaleidoscopic blender, spitting out a misshapen musical wind-up toy that never stops exploding and recoagulating, falling down a flight of stairs and revealing a new ghastly face with each bounce. Taken as some musical equivalent of shitposting by writers who think irony and sarcasm are the same, it’s a pop mindfuck that computes emotionally, as awkward kids and/or evil spirits of chaos Laura Les and Dylan Brady make their voices big and ugly and demented because that’s how they feel. Anyway, shitposting is its own species of rock & roll.
2. Taylor Swift, Lover
To be straight is for experience to confirm expectations. Taylor Swift has written about the delight of watching fantasies fulfilled (“Today Was a Fairytale”), renewed (“Begin Again”), or constructed (“Wildest Dreams”). Even when putatively rejecting conventional heteromance, she also sneakily reconstructs it by using its same vocabulary (“Speak Now”). Her best songs address not just desire but the stories we tell about desire, the moments when dreams and reality converge. But Lover is the first time she’s written about the delight of watching experience surpass expactations, the moment when fantasies are gleefully, unexpectedly discarded for something better (“I once believed love would be burning red, but it’s golden” is a lyric whose emotional force requires no familiarity with her catalogue). It radiates calm, a long exhaled breath after years of drama. She made a monogamous maturity move her queerest album, and the colorful electronic beats sound so pretty in the afterglow.
3. Lana Del Rey, Norman Fucking Rockwell
A quietly hysterical collection of observed Hollywood singer-songwriter fictions, played on the piano by a glamorous lady of the canyon who has just shooed guests out of her shag-carpeted parlor and drawn her nicotine-stained curtains after watching California tumble into the sea. In the same year hating boomers became mainstream, the year’s most critically acclaimed album was also a tribute to the most boomerific of rock critics. Greil Marcus, of course, whose taste has never before been so exquisitely pandered to, and I think that’s beautiful.
4. Blueface, Dirt Bag
Blueface doesn’t rap off beat, it’s the beat that can’t keep up. Or as Blueface himself puts it: “I’m literally talking in this bitch and it’s still knockin!” Or as Greg Tate puts it in “The Persistence of Vision: Storyboard P”: “At moments of revolution in artistic form, innovation frequently involves discarding flashy displays of technique. The reduction of ostentatious moves in favour of subtler ones is often read as laziness or limited ability (Flyboy 2: 86).”
5. Jpegmafia, All My Heroes Are Cornballs
Jammed up by jerky segues and pauses, constantly shifting to the next random thing in an endless procession of abrasive diversions, this experimental rap clusterbomb fashions a music of dynamic impatience, wrenching ugly harmonic convergence from the splattering of keyboard doodles, industrial crunches, electronic glitches, roaring guitars, death-factory sirens, repressed shrieks, goopy fusion keyboards, smears of electronic color. Jpegmafia’s rhymes compute mainly as yet more barrage, more proper nouns competing for your attention, but there’s a mischievous energy in his voice that adds a crucial smidgen of humanity. If this music seems the product of online information overload, it’s also the sound of working in the gig economy and/or the service industry, where “directed attention fatigue” has become a cautionary buzzword. My headaches feel like “Rap Grow Old & Die x No Child Left Behind”.
6. Otoboke Beaver, Itekoma Hits
Hardcore punk as hardcore comedy. Rage channeled into hyperactivity. Gnarled riffs and howled tantrums played at violent speed. Keening voices letting loose because they can’t hold the noise inside. Tension and release games crammed with sonic jokes. Tempo changes and dynamic jerks that seem tokens of the band’s impatience but in fact work as tension-building devices, with explosive kickback later--or now! Dissonance as byproduct of acceleration. In the playful intricacy of their group shout-singing I hear the Raincoats too. Angry giggles. Boom!
7. Kim Gordon, No Home Record
Lacking the guitars of her former bandmates, she threw a wall of synthesized barbed wire around some of her meanest basslines ever and made something unprecedented, for her and Sonic Youth--electroindustrial, basically, riding a bass rumble so deep it overpowers the music. The spoken pieces here (“Don’t Play It”, “Cookie Butter”) initially recall her willful avant-filler on A Thousand Leaves and NYC Ghosts & Flowers; then you notice how much more brutally these tracks bring the noise.
8. Kankyo Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990
Billed as ambient but sprightlier than the aesthetic that term suggests to an American audience, this two-hour set captures a moment in Japanese music history when the influence of Erik Satie and John Cage intersected with new ideas about architectural acoustics, inspiring a craze for minimalist electronica designed to peacefully fill a space (as in-store music for Muji, say). Lent contemporary relevance by the influx of chill lo-fi hip-hop beats to study to as well as the vaporwave-derived fascinations with banality and nostalgia, it’s considerably more beautiful than those lineages would imply, as tranquil and friendly as a book of nature poems. These pieces abound with cute tunelets, yet derive their spacious charm from nonmelodic elements--bells, pitched percussion, and the recorded outdoors: running water, chattering birds. Unlike most ambient music, they are not self-contained; when played outside, the synthesizers merge with the sounds of the city.
9. Teejayx6, The Swipe Lessons
By styling himself as an expert scammer, Teejayx6 invents a new internet-era edition of gangsta macho: he’s a master criminal, king of the deep web, fluent in cryptocurrency, relying on his wits to stay ahead of the online piracy brigade. Don’t cross him, lest he steal your grandmother’s social security number. Over darkly stylized beats, his chattering, perpetually surprised flow enters a realm of formal delight accessible to only the most playful. When he hits you with the requisite “All my fans, I really wouldn’t even scam you, I was just playing,” he acknowledges the figurative nature of the game.
10. Clairo, Immunity
A queer adolescent musical diary, tracing the highs and lows of a conflicted relationship that ends ambiguously. Rostam’s production lapses into self-parody exactly once, with the harpsichord flourishes on “Impossible”; otherwise the smoky bedroom-pop shimmer is flawless. “Sofia” exists for inclusion on romantic playlists.
