I got down to the beach yesterday

morning, high tide, but our first

sunny day in most of a week,

so, “make photos while the sun shines,”

as they say…(or would say if they

were photographers). Hurricane Lee

is churning up towards us in the

Atlantic and already, and what with

the river high from the rain, and

the storm surf, the beach is under

siege…and so are the shorebirds…

interrupted by the contrary winds in their

journey south, and hunkered down

on the sand, mostly just sheltering

by they time I got there. Plovers in

little scrapes, Semi-palpated Sandpipers

in the wind shadow of seaweed and

driftwood clumps (driftstick more like).

A few Piping plovers and a lone Sanderling

running along the surf line picking

off sand fleas. And all of them mostly

oblivious to me and my camera as

I stood watching and clicking just

few yards down the beach. That is

what a storm will do. The birds have

more serious worries than a man

with a camera. For me it was another

in a long line of undeserved gifts

of wonder…a smorgasbord of photo

ops…and I heaped my plate and

came home to spend the afternoon

processing…maybe digesting to

preserve the metaphor. But then

I will never get enough. I am just

so delighted each day to be invited

to the feast…to be able to go out

with my camera and come back full.

And I hope all those shorebirds

survive the storm and make it to

their winter homes on southern shores.
