Daily Doodle 240 – December 12, 2018

Another day full of driving around running errands

But we got to rest at night and watched an episode of Doctor Who together, that was interesting, I never watched this before!

 Today I woke up early, got me some cereal and sat down to watch a video. After so, I got some outdoor clothes on and headed out to my grandma’s house who’s in the US. We were gonna cut down some plantains and feed the chickens

We did all this, I took a bunch of pretty pics and after an hour or so, we left back home where I changed, borrowed some money from mom as my PayPal money hadn’t transferred yet (Ugh), got some cereal boxes for Pixie, got the papers he told me to print yesterday and then left to Pixie’s school after a bit. I wanted to experiment with my Waze app and followed the same exact route it gave me to see if I’d really arrive at the time it predicted. I normally use the app to help me see ahead with traffic alerts, but I can’t trust it much since not that many people use it here and don’t report traffic.. But this time it worked, and I even arrived some 5 minutes earlier somehow

Anyways, I got Pixie after he was let out of school. We left to his house and then left to get some Chinese food. It obviously took a bit as it’s always fresh and while we like that, it still kinda doesn’t make sense they have a drive thru..

We left home after we got the food, we ate, and sometime later Pixie got his new roller-skates a friend gifted him. He used to roller-skate a lot in his childhood as much as I used to ride bicycles and it was really cool to see him get onto them again. He grew tired a bit later and we went inside again

A while later, we headed out to a car rim and performance shop Pixie wanted to go last time but was closed. This time they were open, so we went inside and browsed. Pix also spotted some rims he really would like for his Miata in the future and they fit in well with the colors he’s looking forward to!

We then left back home for an hour or so, Pix watched some videos, but we didn’t do much aside from that. Then we took Wilson out to the nearby Burger King to get some hot chocolate for Pixie. I now agree their whipped cream is really darn good! While there, Pixie saw a Subaru STI (It’s a pretty cool car, guys) so we parked nearby and looked over it

We drove to a friend’s house where we hung out a bit, then left to refuel and head home again. We didn’t spend much time there as we then left to weight one of Pixie’s dogs at a.. Coin operated weighing machine. It was the only logical cheap option nearby, so. They were weighing this dog for a medicine they’ll be giving her

After this, we left to a nearby Marshall’s where Pixie browsed around, then we left to a nearby Subway to eat together. Them sandwiches are so good, I’d still love to try their whole menu, but expensive!

We got home after this but left once again to drop off a comic Pixie ordered for a friend, I think it was that. We then spent some time at home, browsing memes together and cuddling up a bit. I also “scared” Pixie by turning off the room light when he left and dancing behind the door like a dumb dumb. He then walked in and gasped but quickly started laughing lots cuz of how ridiculous the whole thing was

After a while, we left to get some groceries as well as some hot chocolate pouches and whipped cream. We got home, dropped off the groceries and then left to weigh another one of Pixie’s dogs. I’m not exactly sure why we had to weigh this one this time

Anyways, we then finally stopped going out for today, just hanging out in Pixie’s room until we ended up watching a bunch of Doctor Who intro’s and it spiked my curiosity, they looked really cool! We then watched a whole episode together. Pix is a huge fan of this series and while I don’t know much about it, it was still fun to watch together, and I enjoyed it!

Pixie had school the next day though, so we kissed goodbye and got ready to leave. Before this though, I had told him that I wished to see a shooting star again since I enjoy seeing them and just as I said it, I saw one right where I was looking.. So there’s that..

Anyways, I left home and then spent a bit of time outside staring up at the night sky and spotting a few shooting starts in my peripheral vision. I hope nobody was looking cuz I looked so awkward staring up that late at night..

I got inside, put on some more bandages on new bug bites before they got worse, chatted with Pix until he went to bed and then wrote the doodle. I decided I’d be drawing it tomorrow since I don’t have anything scheduled for tomorrow and my eyes are getting red and dry again, so I need the sleep..

The Travis Scott Meal has been a godsend for McDonald’s, which is probably relying on its popularity to distract from the other issues the company is dealing with right now. The meal and merch are not only incredibly popular, but have spawned an entire TikTok meme, where people blast Scott’s “Sicko Mode” at the drive-thru instead of using their words to order. Instead of asking customers to actually communicate (to be fair, an ask unlikely to work), McDonald’s is instead requesting that workers to familiarize themselves with common catchphrases that are circling TikTok.

Phrases include “Let’s keep this short and sweet. I think you know why we’re here,” “Cactus Jack sent me,” and “It’s lit, sicko mode.” In a memo sent to franchisees, McDonald’s US CMO Morgan Flatley and McDonald’s Operator’s National Advertising Fund head Vicki Chancellor wrote, “To reduce confusion, please make crew aware of these monikers or alternate ordering methods.” Obviously, McDonald’s wants to be accommodating of customers, especially during a pandemic, and plenty of McDonald’s workers were probably already familiar with Travis Scott. But still, things are hard right now, especially for food service workers. Give them a break, or at least tip well.

Social Media

Domino’s is a widely known pizza chain that’s known for their cheap deals and especially their presence on social media. With the innovation of their online Pizza Tracker and being able to customize your own pizza right on your computer, it’s no wonder why Domino’s has been dominating the social media world. Like many other fast food chains such as Wendy’s and Burger King hopping onto the trend of sending out obscure tweets, Domino’s has completely defined who they are as a brand through their content. 

Social Media Platforms and Content Strategy: 

Twitter

Domino’s uses various hashtags to connect with its users and replies to consumers when they tweet to them. According to Medium.com, as of 2016, consumers can also direct message Domino’s to place an order - completely reinventing the way you order pizza. The company replies back to tweets everyday, but regularly tweets once or twice everyday. Furthermore, Domino’s keeps up with the trends that rapidly change everyday - tweeting out “memes” or funny, obscure phrases that are relevant in social media today. Domino’s currently has 1.3 million followers on the platform and gets an average of 100+ retweets and around 400+ likes. The brands engagement increases when they do a giveaway or tweet about their love for pizza. 

Instagram 

Domino’s likes to keep their Instagram simple - pictures of their pizza and other foods that they sell. Their bio on Instagram states they are the “recognized world leader in pizza delivery.” To keep their engagement up, Domino’s does post a picture everyday and although it's a similar picture every time, they are able to angle every picture a bit differently and make your mouth water. According to 1851 Franchise, in 2016, Domino’s rolled out a click-thru game called “DXP Adventures” to make their new DXP delivery vehicle a household name. Their creative agency CP+B stated that they wanted to make Domino’s Instagram more interactive to allow for more engagement. Their goal for this interactive game was for non-regular consumers to talk about the brand more and have a strong brand awareness. They have 1.5 million followers on the platform, get approximately 11k+ likes a post and hundreds of comments. 

Evan’s Model of Social Feedback: 

Domino’s realizes the upper-hand they have when it comes to utilizing social media platforms at a “whole-business level.” They realize that business-to-consumer marketing and forming a relationship with the customer is the way to go. They had completely reinvented themselves from just another pizza chain to being the king of pizza. In the early years, it was inevitable that Domino’s had an image problem and turned to social media to “garner insight from customer opinions and brain-storming,” says Medium.com. In 2010, Domino’s had introduced the “Think Oven” initiative and encouraged consumers to submit their suggestions on Facebook. When users are able to talk and form an opinion, that’s when marketers have an understanding and evaluate consumer behavior. For instance, Domino’s was able to transform themselves from many users’ suggestions and created an e-commerce platform to sell pizza. Domino’s can be ordered from various platforms including Slack, Facebook Messenger, their mobile app, Twitter with the use of a pizza emoji, and smart technology. In addition, their responsiveness across all social media platforms where customers are usually on have increased engagement. The brand has also expanded their market by introducing new products such as pasta, boneless wings, various assortments of desserts, etc. 

The Engagement Process:

The level that Domino’s engagement achieves is collaboration. Since the early 2000’s and into 2010, Domino’s has heard out its consumers and changed their brand image in a matter of years. Their social media platforms continue to build traffic because of the content that is curated on a daily basis. From the innovation of mobile marketing - where consumers can order a pizza right on an app - to letting users interact with them across social media platforms, has led Domino’s to let their consumers know that they have taken their direct input and are using it in their products. In regards to consumer feedback, Domino’s reads their negative comments and takes the time to tell that user to private message them to make sure they will be satisfied. Their strong presence on social media has led them to be the more favorable pizza place.

The Economy Will Recover, it Just Won’t Resemble The Economy You’re Used to Living Within

Trump wants us to re-open the economy. Like, right the fuck now.

Pockets of protesters with poorly spelled signs (WTF, gang? It’s like you want everyone to think you’re either too stupid to spell a sign correctly or are too filled with outrage to copy edit...) want us to re-open businesses so they can be less inconvenienced.

When this whole thing came down, I was a skeptic. Skepticism is my default mode so big fucking surprise. I made jokes at the casino about how contracting coronavirus would just be a super efficient weight loss program. I, like the experts being touted online, had no problem comparing it to the flu. I put up memes online about Chicken Little. Panic is almost always the worst reaction to anything, so panic was my enemy.

Identity the two extremes. Find the middle ground. Do that.

Yes. As I’ve grown older (and I hope but do not know, wiser) I’m finding that the road in between the most strident is usually the most feasible and smartest approach.

I’m not a scientist but I know some. I was schooled a bit in the interim. I spent time reading far more about this shit (including the developing economic Möbius strip on the horizon). I’m still not a scientist. I’m no more doctor than Dr. Phill. I’m no economist. Thus, my opinion on forecasting either the path the virus will take and the ensuing economic shift we’ll all be living with soon enough is of little value.

What I can weigh in on is relatively simple.

The economy we’ve grown accustomed is going to change dramatically.

You’re going to spend most of your savings. Your MBA and marketing degrees are going to be worth less. The internet will likely become a public utility. Dining out will look very different than it has in the past. Your libertarian ideology will strain to the breaking point as the idea of the government being far more essential for common survival becomes a reality. You’re going to read more. You’ll probably have to learn a second language (probably Spanish but likely Chinese as well) in order to get a job in most cities.

And those jobs you were terrified the undocumented were taking from you? You’re going to have to get in line because they’ve already cornered the market on essential businesses. You didn’t want those jobs because they didn’t pay what you felt you were worth but now, the value system of what jobs are necessary will change.

You know what?

It’s not that bad. This isn’t the End of the World. This isn’t Armageddon (although I still really love that fucking movie...). If you live in Africa, it’s likely getting close—locusts, 70 percent of the country without clean water, poverty unlike anything anyone in America can even conceive. But in America? Calm the fuck down. 

If the worst thing you can claim is that you can’t find work and you have to cut your own hair, welcome to America. The America that a whole chunk of black people have lived for, well, most of our history. The America that poor whites without college degrees have made livable. In 1933, they didn’t have Netflix, booze delivered to your home, or Hot Pockets. The Joad’s didn’t have the option of a drive-thru Burger King.

If the Apocalypse is epitomized as a population bored out of their skulls because they can’t go to the movies or shop in a mall, then yes. This is the Apocalypse. If not, shut the fuck up, stay inside to be cautious about delivering death to those around you, and figure out how you will thrive in a different economic value system.

The Travis Scott Meal | McDonald’s Plus, Chick-fil-A is testing a new sandwich, and more news to start your day How about we don’t make food service workers’s lives harder? The Travis Scott Meal has been a godsend for McDonald’s, which is probably relying on its popularity to distract from the other issues the company is dealing with right now. The meal and merch are not only incredibly popular, but have spawned an entire TikTok meme, where people blast Scott’s “Sicko Mode” at the drive-thru instead of using their words to order. Instead of asking customers to actually communicate (to be fair, an ask unlikely to work), McDonald’s is instead requesting that workers to familiarize themselves with common catchphrases that are circling TikTok. Phrases include “Let’s keep this short and sweet. I think you know why we’re here,” “Cactus Jack sent me,” and “It’s lit, sicko mode.” In a memo sent to franchisees, McDonald’s US CMO Morgan Flatley and McDonald’s Operator’s National Advertising Fund head Vicki Chancellor wrote, “To reduce confusion, please make crew aware of these monikers or alternate ordering methods.” Obviously, McDonald’s wants to be accommodating of customers, especially during a pandemic, and plenty of McDonald’s workers were probably already familiar with Travis Scott. But still, things are hard right now, especially for food service workers. Give them a break, or at least tip well. And in other news... According to Yelp, 61% of restaurants that closed during the pandemic are now closed permanently. [CNN] Ghost kitchens are on the rise because of the increase in delivery. [WaPo] Food service wages are rising, thanks to increased societal pressure over the pandemic. [NRN] Martha Stewart is weathering the pandemic with CBD. [NYTimes] Burger King says its Whopper “now features no colors, no flavors and no preservatives from artificial sources,” which just reminds you what was in it before. [QSR] Chick-fil-A is testing out a new sandwich in the Carolinas, featuring pimento cheese.
