Banff, Canada
In this episode, the FAQ is: If I am a Step 2 traveler, how do I reach Step 3?
Today’s Destination is: Banff, Canada
Today’s Mistake- I rented a hotel room in Alaska without A/C
Travel Advice:  Stoke your wanderlust
FAQ: If I am a Step 2 traveler, how do I reach Step 3?
Step 2 is for traveling in your same country and in a comfort zone that is familiar. Getting over that level takes some adventure. Ask yourself if you’re ready to see more diverse experiences now. Are you ready to make a move to a distant land, such as Hawaii, Alaska, or the Bahamas?
Get a travel guidebook and start researching the area for clues on how to get there, what to do and how to prepare. Then talk to people you know who have been there. Ask them questions about what they liked. Be curious. Eventually,  you will have the courage and the savings to make the trip and enjoy the higher step to a more difficult and rewarding adventure.
Today’s destination: Banff, Canada
Banff was on my bucket list for a long time. It may be on yours, too.
You can get here by train, plane or automobile.
You’ll see the pure beauty of Canada’s outdoors, even if it’s rainy for part of the day. It’s scenic and green because it rains a lot here. The drive from Calgary to Banff is beautiful and it’s about 90 miles.

Dr. Travelbest: I drove to Banff, Canada from Waterton, Canada after eating at the Prince of Wales Restaurant near the US/Canada border.
I had been in Glacier National Park and on the Canadian side to explore further into Canada. I liked the feel of the town of Banff immediately. It’s a European-like city. I took a strenuous hike to the top of the Sulfur Mountain Trail. 5.5 km, 655 m elevation gain (2.5-3 hours), and saw stunning views of the Bow (rhymes with throw) Valley. Follow a short trail up to the historic Cosmic Ray Station. There is also a 4-person gondola which in 8 minutes soars to the top of Sulphur Mountain for a bird's-eye view of six incredible mountain ranges.
Whether you walk or take the gondola, stroll along the ridgetop boardwalk where the views get better with every step. Outside is a 360-degree rooftop observation deck and inside a multi-sensory theatre with interactive exhibits,  plus restaurants.
That Jacuzzi at the bottom of the mountain felt great after my hike. Banff is known for its hot springs. Take one or more.
Banff Springs Hotel (Fairmont) had a convention center and the best tea/coffee ever. Then I drove to Lake Louise Chateau (Fairmount) and had one of the best buffet breakfasts ever. Five-star quality and a high price to match, but I ate for the day here.
The weather was pouring rain, then sunny skies all within an hour, and the beauty was seen in the reflective turquoise water. Nearby is the grand Ice Fields Highway. 3-5 hours to a full-day drive, depending on how often you stop. There are tours you can hire, in the event you don’t have a car. You’ll see Bow (throw) Falls and Morraine Lake. I kept driving up to Jasper, so that may be on your list as well.
Do see the Ice Fields Highway.
Don’t get close to a moose.
Lesson learned- I rented a hotel room in Alaska without A/C
Most days in Alaska are cold. I’ve visited twice, and both times were in July. If you are going to Alaska in the summer, check to see if they have air conditioning.
I timed it to the hot days and there was no A/C to cool off. You may find a fan as I eventually did. You should expect extreme temperatures when in Alaska. Learn that lesson here.
  Today’s Travel Advice-Stoke your wanderlust
If you are thinking of a trip you want to take, start a list of things you know about that country. Do you know anyone who’s been there? Do you know anyone else who may know about the region? Visit your local library, bookstore, and online search engine to find out more and satisfy your curiosity. Keep that list growing. It will soon become your bucket list for travel.

Pods vs packrat vs upack

Pods vs packrat vs upack full#
Pods vs packrat vs upack plus#
Not only are its quotes generally very competitive, but the company allows haggling, which means you might be able to lock in a price even lower than your initial quote. What we love: Pack Rat puts a real focus on having some of the most competitive pricing in the industry. Read our comprehensive review of Pack Rat here. You can’t get a quote or book online for most moves, which means you’ll probably spend some time on the phoneġ-800-PACK-RAT: Container Moves For the Seriously Budget-Minded.Pricing can be higher than the competition. The website is missing some important information.Good nationwide coverage, and some international coverage.Minimum rental time is 30 days, so you can take as much time as you need to pack and unpack.
Pods vs packrat vs upack full#
Tons of flexibility to cancel or change your plans up to the day before your move with full refunds available.
Usually less expensive than a full-service move.
Not everyone is able to plan a move with that much lead time, so if you’re moving without a ton of notice, PODS may not even be available for you. In fact, during peak moving times like spring and summer, their moving pods can be sold out up to six months in advance. What we don’t love: Because PODS is so popular, its containers tend to sell out. Moving is stressful, and knowing you have PODS’ decades of experience can be a great peace of mind. It created container moving when it incorporated in 1998, and has since helped millions of families successfully move. What we love: PODS has the most experience out of any company in this industry. Read our comprehensive review of PODS here. PODS: The Container Moving and Storage Industry Pioneer PODS vs 1-800-PACK-RAT vs U-Pack: What We Love and What We Don’tĮach of these companies has its own set of pros and cons, so let’s dive right on in. In this article, we’ll compare their service offerings, availability, containers, prices, and more, so by the end of the page, you should be equipped with way more information to help you choose the right moving company for you. Any of these three would be a solid choice for your move, but if you’re looking for the perfect match for your moving needs, you’ve come to the right place. In this showdown, we have PODS, 1-800-PACK-RAT, and U-Pack - three extremely established and well-known companies in the container moving landscape. They take the affordability of a DIY move - where you rent a truck or trailer and do the whole thing yourself - and remove the scariest part: Having to haul a trailer or drive a giant truck. It’s the perfect middle ground between DIY and full-service moving, and it’s no wonder people are confused about which provider to go with since dozens of them have popped up since moving pods became a thing in the late ‘90s.Another popular use for moving containers is as residential storage containers since many of these companies will allow you to keep your containers indefinitely for onsite storage (though not all of them offer this, as you’ll find out below). Container moving companies are popular for a reason. You should get quotes from all three of these companies, but our favorite is U-Pack.
Pods vs packrat vs upack plus#
U-Pack reviews are consistently great, plus the company’s great national coverage, convenient container options, and transparent pricing made it our top pick for container moving companies. All of them are high-quality, trustworthy companies, but if we had to pick, we’d go with U-Pack. Overall opinion: Here we have three major players in the container moving landscape.

Bidding Wars Overheated the Home-Buyer Market, Now They’re Coming for Renters
Tumblr media
Competition among renters means many tenants feel compelled to pay more each month than what the landlord is asking When Donna Jones and her husband looked to rent a home in Northern Virginia in February, they often received the same response: Sorry, but someone else offered to pay more rent. “We didn’t even know you could do that,” Ms. Jones said. Bidding wars have long been a staple of hot housing markets, where buyers compete with offers above the seller’s listing price. Now, these contests are becoming more commonplace in the rental market. Real-estate agents from New York to Chicago and Atlanta say they see more people than ever making offers above asking to lease homes and apartments that they will never own. An increasing number of white-collar professionals—some of whom recently sold homes—are reluctant to buy because of record-high home prices, rising mortgage rates and limited supply. They are renting instead, helping to drive a frenzy for leased properties of all kinds, and helping fuel the trend of offering above asking rents, real-estate agents said. Get WSJ Print Subscription In some parts of Atlanta, so many people compete for the same homes that Re/Max agent Peter Beckford said he is renting out $3,500-a-month townhouses to couples making close to $1 million a year. “All of these applicants are extremely well-qualified,” Mr. Beckford said. A New York City panel last week approved rent increases of 3.25% for next year at properties covered by the city’s rent stabilization rules, the largest rise in nearly a decade. But for the city’s unregulated rental stock, which accounts for about half of all apartments there, it is open season on rent hikes. In popular high-end neighborhoods, more renters are making over-ask offers, real-estate agents say. “We’re politely recommending it,” said Adrian Savino, managing director of the Living New York brokerage firm. Large rental landlords also report having more business than they can handle. “In any given week, we get over 13,000 leads for only 200 homes available,” said Gary Berman, chief executive of Tricon Residential, during a May earnings call. The median U.S. asking rent passed $2,000 for the first time in May, according to real-estate company Redfin, and it has risen 15% over the past 12 months. If more high-income people enter hot rental markets, and the supply of new homes for them to rent or buy doesn’t substantially increase, rents are poised to keep rising, housing analysts say. Barron’s News Subscription (5-Years) Take 70% Off Rising interest rates also mean that builders are likely to build less because fewer people can afford a new home when borrowing rates are higher, said Taylor Marr, deputy chief economist at Redfin. “I think we’re in a really tough spot now with the outlook for new construction.” Many renters don’t stop at offering a higher rental price. Some are following other parts of the home-buyer playbook, such as drafting “pick me” love letters that introduce themselves to a landlord and make an emotional appeal. Others are asking previous landlords to write them recommendations, as if applying for a job. In Chicago, the website Brixbid.com facilitates an influx of people bidding on rent. Landlords start the bidding with a suggested price. Renters then have the choice to lowball them or bid even higher. Some apartments now go 10% to 15% over ask on Brixbid, said company co-founder James Peterson. Chicago real-estate agent Jodi Dougherty of Downtown Apartment Co. has told her clients to write in their best offers on any rental application they submit. Many applicants are losing out when they assume the asking rent is enough, she said. Subscribe New York Times Digital Subscription 3 Years $60 Earlier this month, a client succeeded by pre-emptively offering $1,000 over the asking price for a three-bedroom apartment near downtown Chicago that was listed for $4,000. “We did not win it by a landslide, by any means,” Ms. Dougherty said. It isn’t just high-end units in affluent neighborhoods where tenants feel pressure to pay above ask. For several months, Atlanta housekeeper Tabutha Robinson and her family had been looking to move when in April Ms. Robinson found a three-bedroom house listed for $1,325. The listing agent, Torrence Ford, warned her there were already other applications on the home. “I felt like, if I go up just a tad on the offer, then maybe I will get it,” Ms. Robinson recalled. She offered $1,500, a stretch for her budget, she said, but what it took to finally rent a home. “I ran it by the owner, and they were so elated they went with them instantly,” Mr. Ford said. Ms. Jones also entered the bidding-war fray. “Willing to pay $50 more,” she began writing on her applications for rental houses across the greater Washington, D.C., area. Get Bloomberg News Digital Subscription for 5-Years Save 70% Off Yet even though she and her husband T.J. have careers in government contracting and the military and say they have good credit, they were still getting outbid. At one point, they considered dressing in military garb for home showings in the hopes that might impress some property owners. Then in March, when a four-bedroom townhouse in Ashburn, Va., hit the market for $3,000, the couple pounced. They offered an extra $200 and were accepted. “It was scary, because at the end there we were just putting in applications sight unseen,” Ms. Jones said. “This is not normal.” Read the full article

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/annehelenpetersen/millennials-burnout-generation-debt-work
Although it isn’t, I could swear this was written by me. I deeply relate to these issues and the descripted anxiety and paralysis when it comes to these “adult” tasks. Do you think it’s merely a generational problem or are these traits related to MBTI?
(I’m not a psychologist, so take everything I say at the end with a grain of salt. I love to read and think and ‘fix’ things, so I have lots of thoughts about this.)
This phenomenon is something I have thought about and discussed, whenever I heard accusations against millennials. The short answer is there’s no particular MBTI type that causes this feeling of inadequacy by comparison, but I would say social dominants and Enneagram 3s suffer from it the worst (I suspect the person who wrote the article is a social 3, since the emphasis is all on success, achievement, paying attention to their social media feeds, and trying to compete on that level).
There’s a lot to unpack in that article, so I’ll just hit a couple of things – the tendency to avoid unnecessary, small, unpleasant tasks is a simple lack of motivation, follow through, and even a level of personal irresponsibility. It’s also a facet of not possessing self-love, because a person should do unpleasant or boring things out of self-love (because doing this now will reduce the guilt and anxiety of leaving that package on the table for the next six months, because I am a person who keeps their commitments, because this thing simply needs doing, and it doesn’t matter if it’s boring or tedious or not). If you do something immediately, you no longer have to think about it, or feel anxiety about doing it. Rip the band-aid off and do the boring “adult” stuff, so it’s no longer looming over you.It doesn’t matter what you feel like doing. Just do it.
Okay, as to the entire mindset of the millennial generation… it comes from a lot of things. Parents that made a great deal of money gave the next generation expectations above and beyond what is feasible. The brutal truth is, most of our parents did not live in a five room house when they were 20, they had a crappy little apartment and barely made the rent. Yet for some reason we expect to get out of college, find a job that pays a hundred thousand a year, and buy that house—whether we can afford it or not. Things cost way more for us than they did for our parents, also—instead of 6 grand for a house, its 300,000 grand.
There is enormous social pressure to attend college, even though most jobs do not require it; this means the value of a degree is less, because everyone and their cousin now have the same degree. It used to be that trade schools were more the norm, or that you simply grew up working in your father’s business and assumed you were going to take it over from him at some point. Only a few people with specific ambitions went to college for a short amount of time, with an end result in mind, and it, again, cost less because fewer people were attending and driving up the prices. College is an extremely expensive place to “find out what you want to do,” instead of already knowing what you are going to do, and getting an education IF it is necessary for your career. (For the record, you can often get higher paying job obtaining trade skills such as working as an electrician or a plumber, with less cost and way less debt.) So most millennials come out of college with a hundred grand in student loan debts. They assume, because they grew up in a society that told them how special they were, that they can get an amazing job and make all this money and pay back their loans and buy that enormous house—but they are all competing for the same job everyone else wants.
Or they were raised thinking they were special, so the rules do not apply to them, and that their feelings matter. In a nutshell: they do not matter. Your boss will not care if you felt like coming to work or not. You will come in and do what you are paid to do, or you will get fired. It doesn’t matter if you feel like cleaning the cat box or not. You need to clean it, because your cat deserves a better life. It doesn’t matter if you feel like exercising or not. If you do not do it, you will gain weight and face a health problem later in life. Adulting is learning to do the things that need done, whether or not you feel like doing them.
Now, let’s think about the social networking component, because it is an enormous contributor to “the problem” this generation faces. Back before college became the norm, and before the internet was accessible to everyone, society on the whole lived a much smaller life. You grew up, you dated someone from high school, you worked weekends in a local store or business, you got a more permanent job, you got married. It was a no-brainer, because everyone did it, most people knew each other, and socializing was done in person, rather than online, through community gatherings, church groups, BBQ’s, and town events. You weren’t aware of all the things you “should” be doing, or could “own” or even the fun other people were having, and as a result, people did not over-think as much. The internet has opened up a thousand options and the millennial thinks they should carefully consider all of them, because they do not want to make the same ugly mistakes their parents made.
Most of their parents have had multiple marriages and maybe even several sets of kids with different partners. They experienced what all young people do—periods of debt and poverty. But they “lived” life, and the millennial is “not” living life—they are more cautious, more fearful of making a life-shattering mistake, and more fearful of experiencing pain, suffering, and loss of the lifestyle that many of them were privileged to have, which was comfort. Their parents provided everything they needed, and got them used to a certain standard of living, which raised their expectations about what they must earn to match it. Going without is not possible in their mind; they have to achieve more than their parents, at a younger age. But… instead of the 5 options their parents have, the millennial has 10,000. Who should I date and marry? Well, it could be the person next door… but what if I’m missing someone BETTER? Should I try online dating? Swipe through 8,000 people? How do I decide? Where should I get a job? Who should I work for? Should it be in this state or somewhere else? Can I find a job that pays me a lot but doesn’t eat up all my free time so I can have fun? Or will I feel trapped??
Less is more, and all our society has, is more – too many choices lead to what psychologists call “choice paralysis.” The point where someone doesn’t know what to choose, so they choose nothing. It can be as simple as deciding you want to watch something, logging on to Netflix, and seeing 250 possibilities, being unable to decide, and turning it off… or not knowing which of the 60 people to respond to on the dating site… or which of the 20 degrees you want… which causes people to shut down completely and avoid decisions altogether.
Faced with too high of and unreasonable expectations of their own self-importance and worth (brought on by the “everyone is a winner” culture), unfeasible standards that are much too lofty for partners (we don’t know how to just choose a person and tolerate their flaws, we want the RIGHT person, so we keep on looking endlessly at times, and don’t want to settle, leading millennials to being the generation who isn’t getting married young), incredible debt tied to college degrees and expenses, and choice paralysis on everything from our pizza toppings to Big Life Decisions… is it any wonder that we (I am one of you, just barely; I’m a bit older than most of you) don’t do anything?
There is a solution to this problem, though. Minimize your life. Make it real instead of abstract. Stop living it in your head, and do it in your body. How? Minimize your choices. Practice making them. Do the thing you don’t want to do, first, to teach yourself responsibility. Make your world smaller. Consider a smaller life with more freedom and free time in it. Cut social media down considerably. If Facebook tracking you, hording your information, and making a “file” on you troubles you, pull the plug. You are not missing anything. Consider what works better—an impersonal tweet or a conversation with a person in the flesh. Start by making small decisions, and lead into bigger ones. Learn to lower your expectation and set realistic ones. The odds are, the person you pick to be with isn’t any better or worse than if you tried out 50 other people. Living in a tiny apartment for 6 years is nothing to feel ashamed about, it’s how MOST PEOPLE start their life. Cut the things out of your schedule that you do not need, and focus on what matters. Family time should not be on your “to do” list. Watch Dave Ramsey videos on YouTube to learn how to budget your money. Get rid of the social media account that make you feel envious, or like your life should be “more” than it is. Most of the time, life is just life. It has tooth aches, bad tuna sandwiches, flat tires, and Christmases that aren’t as magical as you wanted them to be, and that’s… life. If you can’t tell the difference between Instagram “I took this photo 70 times to impress you and then airbrushed it” and “real life,” get rid of it altogether.
A lot of this anxiety and paralysis, we bring on ourselves. But we can also choose to do something good for ourselves, and … make decisions. Small ones that can lead to big changes.

Whew! I’m glad I found the right person! I’m just curious about what kind of activities there are to do besides like hiking and camping, as I personally am not a big camping person. I do love to hike though! Also what the crime rate and employment rate seem to be? Is it better to live closer to big cities like Portland or are there better opportunities in smaller areas? Is the ocean really cold enough to get hypothermia if you go swimming in the summer? I’m from the south and I live in the eastern Midwest and I miss the ocean so much, it’d be nice to be able to swim in the ocean again. Is there support for lgbt communities? (we’re both females and neither of our families are very supportive of us getting married) Do you really not pump your own gas? Is the cost of living extremely high or is it moderately priced? This is all I can think of right now, but if I have more questions or she thinks of some would it be cool to come back and ask some more?
So, I’ve lived just off Salem my entire life, so unfortunately some of my answers might not be as satisfactory as you’d maybe like! Like, the population of my town is literally a quarter of Portland’s lol. I’ll just go through the list:
What kind of activities are there to do besides hiking and camping?
Basically every major city you go to is going to have an interesting museum of some sort, and if you google each one, they’ll have different attractions, although most people will travel to Portland for OMSI, the gardens, and the zoo. We have several wildlife rescues and safaris you can visit/drive through throughout the state as well. Plus there are tons of towns up and down the beach that you can rent a room/house in and have fun there. I don’t typically venture toward the eastern part of Oregon, but when I have enough money saved up, I’m going to take a trip so I can see Hell’s Canyon. And if you’re theater buffs, Ashland has a Shakespeare festival every summer where they put on three different plays. Hope it comes back in 2022!
However, don’t count camping out just yet! There are a lot of campgrounds (especially at state parks) where you can rent a cabin or yurt, so you don’t have to do the whole hike-out, set-up, pitch tent thing. I stayed in a yurt at Champoeg park and it was nice to be able to hike out and hike back in without worrying about having to set up camp.
What are the crime rates?
So, I’m trying to get past my bias, because my cousin died a couple years ago in Portland after being mugged. However, this was definitely outside the norm and was completely random.
It really depends on where you are. Violent crimes are relatively low across the board, higher in larger cities. Most of my extended family lives in Portland or its suburbs, and whenever we come visit, they always warn us to clean out our cars so no one will see something they’d break in to steal. Someone once broke into my aunt’s car to steal a bottle of soda, if that’s any indication. I can’t say that I myself feel safe walking around alone after dark, because, well. Woman after dark.
What are the employment rates? Is the cost of living high or moderately priced?
When it comes to employment opportunities, it also really depends on your field (and also this is all pre-covid so I don’t know how it will change after we get through the pandemic). If you’re in the restaurant industry, larger cities will probably be best, but if you have a specialized field, it could be the smaller towns that have openings. Also, rent is sky-high basically anywhere you go in Oregon, unless it’s a really small town. Then again, they’re even higher depending where you go in California. I think they might be lower in rural Washington areas, but basically everywhere you go is going to have high rent. (Indicator: My older sister did the math, found her rent would be equal to a house payment, and just bought an entire fucking house instead of renting a two bedroom apartment).
Is the ocean really cold enough to get hypothermia if you go swimming in the summer?
Unfortunately, yes. I would not suggest actually swimming in our ocean. It rarely gets over sixty degrees, even in the summer, and the ocean doesn’t warm up until you get closer to southern California. Oregon surfers wear wetsuits to stay insulated in the ocean. Even disregarding how cold the ocean is, we are especially prone to sneaker waves and riptides. Most people will not venture out deeper than their knees. However, my parents assure me that there are several lakes you can swim in! Sure, it’s not exactly like the ocean, but it’s definitely safer. Also, don’t count the coast out just because you can’t swim! There are tons of tide pools you can explore when the tide is out, recreational dunes, scenic walkways, and all of our beaches are public.
Is there support for LGBT communities?
For the most part, I’d say so, especially in larger cities like Portland. You’ve always got to be careful in the more rural areas, but I feel like that’s the same for most states. I’ve never felt unsafe to identify as queer in Salem, although the LGBT nightlife leaves something to be desired in comparison to Portland. Also, per the wikipedia page for LGBT rights in Oregon:
Oregon is frequently referred to as one of the United States' most LGBT-friendly states, and is home to an active LGBT community with multiple bars, clubs, venues, events and other establishments. Elected in 2016, Governor Kate Brown is the nation's first openly bisexual governor. A 2019 opinion poll conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute showed that 70% of Oregonians supported anti-discrimination legislation protecting LGBT people.
Do you really not pump your own gas?
We really don’t pump our own gas. Unless you have a diesel vehicle, a motorcycle or motorized scooter, or population fewer than 40,000, it is illegal to pump your own gas. We have gas attendants for that. I know that some people find this irritating, but it’s really nice not to have to get out of your car when it’s gross out.
Hopefully this helped some, although I’m sure it causes more questions than it answers, lol.

I hope you're doing well! I know you posted about a stressful situation last month, and I hope it's resolved itself. Sending good wishes you you and Hamlet!
Thank you so very much for checking in on me! I really do appreciate it. An update to that post under the cut.
Carol, who moved in with me on May 28, is still here. Right now, we have set a tentative move-out goal of the first or second week of August, but this is pending an apartment application that she hopes to finalize on Monday and a job situation that is a complete mess.
Basically, according to my limited understanding, Carol is licensed to teach in Florida. Alabama has a reciprocity clause with Florida, but it must be applied for. Carol has recently begun this process, but her teaching license(s?) is (are?) set to expire in December unless she passes certain exams. She’s already passed one for...general middle and high school teaching, I think, but failed a math exam. She has an art history exam Monday afternoon and expects to pass. I hope so, because she’s been doing nothing but watching Netflix and shopping for houses for the last few days in her new 2017 Jeep Cherokee.
I remain unspeakably grateful to my parents for teaching me financial literacy, because until I witnessed Carol’s decision-making, I had no idea how hard it was for some people to not spend money unwisely.
As a reminder, Carol is dead broke. She has $153,000 in debt across student loans, medical bills, Czech and US taxes, and some personal loans she would like to repay to friends for helping her. She is unemployed and has no support from her family and has relied on couch surfing at friends’ and acquaintances’ homes since last summer for housing. Since moving in with me, she has been trying to find somewhere to live that would accept her with all her debt and her nonexistent US employment history for the last ten years. Based on what she’s said, I think she has about $9k in the bank--or did, until last week.
In short, she needs a car, a job, and a home, and as far as I can tell she doesn’t care which order they come in.
Two weeks ago, she was offered a position in a rural town about 30 minutes from where I live. It’s a small, very country town which desperately needs a special education teacher, something I think Carol really does have a passion for. However, because she hasn’t finished the reciprocity licensure application yet, they’re having a lot of roadblocks with her paperwork, compounded by the fact that when she left Prague last year, she left all her important documentation behind: things like her birth certificate, her social security card, and her letters of recommendation, which for some reason she did not have electronic backups of. The principal has been trying to get what she needs from Carol for two weeks. Carol is constantly saying that things are “in process” but has nothing to show for it.
As far as we can tell, the job is still hers, but the school year starts August 13th and she still hasn’t been approved by the Board of Education because the paperwork is still not finished on her end. She did not attempt to replace her birth certificate or social security card until they needed it for the application. (Her friend in Prague--and I am beginning to realize she uses the word “friend” for anyone she’s met longer than sixty seconds), who frantically packed up all her belongings when she realized she would not be able to go back to the city, cannot ship her belongings or go through them for the important paperwork until next summer, as she and her husband are currently vacationing in Rome for a year.
Carol decided last night she is also going to apply for some online Department of Defense position--I didn’t understand the details and don’t really want to know, except that it’s also teaching and some administration. We’ll see how it works out. She is growing increasingly annoyed at the principal’s requests for paperwork completion, which baffles me.
So, job: shrug? Maybe?
Car next, then, but this whole mess also goes back to the financial literacy thing. My parents have always been extremely frugal (pennywise, as my dad would say), and from childhood they made it very clear to us to not buy things you couldn’t afford. They’ve never had a car payment in my memory, and they paid off their house about ten years ago. This means they drove a lot of junkers for a very long time, and for a very long time we had very few vacations, but now they’re fully financially stable and debt-free and my mom has a car that she drove off the lot brand new that they paid cash in hand for.
If I had been in Carol’s situation, I would have found a cheap, mostly reliable used car that probably wasn’t going to explode on me and drive that as long as I could while saving up for housing. I did in fact drive her to look at several used cars, most of which would have been even outside my expected budget (hers, as it happens, is larger even than that, because one of her overseas friends was willing to contribute $5000 to the cost of a vehicle). (I paid $6500 for my current car, a 2004, in college in 2012 with 70,000 miles on it at the time, and have driven it ever since.)
She rejected all of them because they did not have good “energy” and “feelings.” One she was willing to buy at $3700, but told the seller to go pay for his own inspection (once I explained to her what mechanical inspections were as a concept), so they ghosted her. She also is extremely afraid of head gasket failure--I don’t know why, since she knows nothing about cars--and has assumed all vehicles she has driven are on the verge of it, so after the first week she refused to even look at a vehicle without a warranty.
This means she exclusively limited herself to used dealership options, which I’m just going to come right out and say was monumentally stupid. I don’t know if any car dealers follow me, so I’m sorry if I am misperceiving this, but in my experience almost every dealer I’ve gone to has been aggressive, manipulative, and extremely predatory in their interest rates. I cannot think of a riskier course of action in abject debt than to try to cut a deal with a car dealer for the sake of a warranty I doubt will cover that much truly expensive failure in the long run anyway.
On Thursday, Carol bought a $20,000 2017 Jeep Cherokee from a dealership down the road. I don’t know what she put down. I do know she did not use her friend’s money (why not??) and I know her interest rate on the car loan is 4%, which she is extremely proud of and which horrifies me. She also “persuaded” them into a limited warranty that will cover the vehicle up to 100,000 miles (currently at 42k, and they ~only offer it for cars under 40,000 miles~). I can’t tell you how bad an idea I think all this is.
Thursday night, as she was regaling me with stories of her negotiating prowess, she also tells me she has decided to buy a house. She’s sick of renting, and somehow, someone somewhere managed to get her approved for up to $120,000 in a home loan. She already has $150k in debt, another $20k from the car, and now wants to buy a house. She was delighted that she could make the minimum 7% down payment, even though it would wipe out every cent she has left and leave her less than $500 to her name for moving expenses, utilities, food, title registration, etc. afterwards.
She doesn’t even have a secure job yet.
However, this plan seems to have fallen through. She went out with a realtor several times this weekend and came home the last time in great, heaving sobs, because she can’t find the 3bed 2bath she wanted in her price range. (For reference, most homes in this area go between 200k - 250k right now for 2-3bed 2ba, and the closer you get to the city--I have about a 20 minute commute--the higher it gets. My next door neighbor sold her 3bed 2.5ba for >300k three months ago, and Carol knew this.) She was absolutely devastated that the only things in her range were “tiny little ugly flipped houses” and “the ghetto.” The realtor basically said she wasn’t going to waste any more of her time. Carol repeatedly told me how grateful I should be that I got in at the price point I did a few years back, because no “normal people” could ever afford to break into the market again.
I tried to tell her that it was because I lived in with a roommate in very cheap housing and then a cell of a 1bed 1ba apartment for eight years while I saved money, but if nothing else, I’ve learned I’m not allowed to compare our situations or histories or offer advice of any kind except “go ahead and buy what you want,” because that only makes her cry harder. In the end, she has decided to give up on the house for now and settle for the absolute last thing in the world she wanted, an apartment with a lease.
To be honest, until she has a signed contract in hand, I half-expect this lease to fall through as well. I have tried to offer what I think is sensible advice and been ignored or rebuffed. I have tried to offer a sympathetic ear and ended up with her sobbing uncontrollably on me--heaving, body-wracking sobs--over and over again with me trapped in my own home, providing endless emotional support for a girl I don’t even like. I have tried to encourage her to do the things she wants to do, since she’s going to do them anyway, and when she gets “negative energy” after the purchases (buyer’s remorse, I think, that one little inkling of sense saying maybe it wasn’t a great idea to buy a $20,000 car or an $1100 brand new iPhone without a job), she blames it on the exact thing I said I thought might be good and makes me feel like I have now directly contributed to a negative outcome after poor decision-making.
For the record, when she says these things to me she is not saying, and has never said, them directly at me. She has never blamed me in any way for a negative outcome. She is not consciously trying to manipulate me or abuse me or take advantage of my help. She has never once asked me for money or job connections or for me to use any of my stability to unfairly or unethically get her something she needs. She is just completely absorbed in her own (rightfully absorbing) mess of a situation, and I think just completely unaware of how much of an emotional black hole she has become. There are no problems except her problems. There are no needs except her needs, and everyone around her has to understand how hard she has it at all times.
So, we’ll see. I am praying that the apartment works out next week. The owner seems to want to work with her, which is a hopeful sign. Good thoughts would be appreciated.
--
Aside from all of this, work has gotten extremely complicated. I’m not going to go into all of it now, but one of my jobs is to create an extremely detailed schedule for students in clinic. This is used to schedule patients in each service--if we have this many students, we can have this many patient slots per half-day, etc. Last week, two students were out unexpectedly, one who broke her arm the day before she was supposed to begin, and one who had a terrible anxiety attack and thought the symptoms were actually COVID. That student was tested and cleared negative, but Student Health requires a two-week quarantine anyway, so she was not allowed to return.
This meant that we now had multiple patients per day with no one to see them. We tried to reschedule as many as we could, but we still ended up with multiple overbooks. This is extremely stressful for me as both a provider, an instructor, and a human being who hates having other people wait on her in a professional capacity. We got through the week, but not without several painful bumps, and it’s looking like there will be more soon.
I also woke up to an email this morning that one of my favorite students (yes, I have favorites, I’m sorry), had a completely unexpected death in the immediate family and had to rush home. This is a very, very sweet, very smart girl who has worked unbelievably hard over the past year to do well in this program and in my courses, and I am just devastated for her. One of her friends is willing to cover her clinic, so the impact will be minimal on that side, but to have this happen during this country’s hellhole handling of this pandemic...I can’t even imagine it.
All of this isn’t even touching COVID. The President’s side has won in that sense--I don’t even register the numbers anymore--but as of last week our dean sent out messaging that implied that with our state’s failure to contain the spread, new discussions were going to be happening soon regarding our August start. We already had committed to full hybrid scheduling: all lectures online, in-person labs only where absolutely necessary to continue advancement in the program, and those labs limited to two per room with full PPE, but if they decide even that can’t happen, I don’t know what the fuck I’m going to do. I cannot make competent doctors over Zoom. I can’t. At some point they have to touch other people and look at other people’s eyes. They have to be able to check real, in-person blood pressure. They have to look at genuine eye movements and ocular surfaces in person and I cannot and will not let them enter clinic until they have the practice and the time and the practicals behind them. I fucking refuse to endanger the public for sixty years because someone in an office somewhere decided a timetable is more important than a patient keeping their ability to see, and I’m ready to fight administration on this if they try to push it.
But if I win the fight, what next? They just...don’t enter clinic next year. They don’t enter my program. I don’t know what they do in the meantime, as this lab meets four mornings a week and the lecture twice. The course is delayed until next year or whenever we have the virus under control again, and suddenly my fall semester sure looks like I’ll be being paid to stay at home and count carpet fibers. I don’t think they’ll fire me--no one else wants to teach my course anyway--but if I win this fight I might put myself right into furlough in the process.
I could be borrowing trouble, I know. They could come back and say that after review, our system and safety protocols (all extremely conservative) are indeed safe enough and we can proceed as we want. They could say that our limited in-person option for lectures (we have several gigantic lecture halls that could easily socially distance) is the only thing that needs to go. They could say that we just need to have smaller lab groups--hellish on me, but doable.
But it’s one more element of stress in my life that I just can’t handle worrying about right now, which is why I’ve been bouncing back and forth between random fics and oneshots (that mermaid one was feverishly written on a single evening Carol spent at her mom’s house) and pouring an ungodly amount of hours into Animal Crossing. At least there I have some control over what happens next.
Sorry, guys. I know this is not the happy update I was hoping for. I’ll try to check in again next month and we’ll see where things end up.

Charlie Munger: Academic Economics — Strengths and Weaknesses, after Considering Interdisciplinary Need - Notes
My personal history is interesting because it's deficiencies and my peculiarities eventully created advantages. For some odd reason, I had an early and extreme multidisciplinary cast of mind. I couldn't stand reaching for a small idea in my own discipline when there was a big idea right over the fence in somebody else's discipline. So I just grabbed in all directions for the big ideas that would really work. Nobody taught me to do that, I was just born with that yen. I was also born with a huge craving for syntheses. And when it didn't come easily, which was often, I would rag the problem, and then when I failed I would put it aside and I'd come back to it and rag it again. It took me 20 years to figure out how and why the Reverend Moon's conversion methods worked. But the psychology departments haven't figured it out yet, so I'm ahead of them.
But anyway, I have this tendency to want to rag the problems. Because WWII caught me. I drifted into some physics and the Air Corps sent me to Caltech where I did a little more physics as part of being made into a meteorologist. And there, at a very young age, I absorbed what I call the fundamental full attribution ethos of hard science. And that was enormously useful to me. Let me explain that ethos.
Under this ethos, you've got to know all the big ideas in all the disciplines less fundamental than your own. You can never many any explanation, which can be made in a more fundamental way, in any other way than the most fundamental way. And you always take with full attribution to the most fundamental ideas that you are required to use. When you're using physics, you say you're using physics. When you're using biology, you said you're using biology. And so on and so on. I could early on see that ethos would act as a fine organizing system for my thought. And I strongly suspected that it would work really well in the soft sciences as well as the hard sciences, So I just grabbed it and used it all through my life in soft science as well as hard science. That was a very lucky idea for me.
Let me explain how extreme that ethos is in hard Science. There is a constant, one of the fundamental constants in physics, known as Boltzmann's constant. You probably all know it very well. And the interesting thing about Boltzmann's constant in that Boltzmann didn't discover it. So why is Boltzmann's constant now named for Boltzmann? Well, the answer was that Boltzmann derived that constant from basic physics in a more fundamental way than the poor forgotten fellow who found the constant in the first place in some less fundamental way. The ethos of hard science is so strong
What’s Wrong with Economics
The nature of this failure is that it creates what I always all, “man with a hammer syndrome” And that's taken from the folk saying: To the man with only a hammer, every problem looks pretty much like a nail. And that works marvellously to sum up all professions, and all departments of academia, and indeed most practical life. The only antidote for being an absolute klutz due to the presence of a man with a hammer syndrome is to have a full kit of tools. You don't have just a hammer. You've got all the tools. And you've got to have one more trick.
You've got to use those tools checklist-style, because you'll miss a lot if you just hope that the right tool is going to pop up unaided whenever you need it. But if you've got a full list of tools, and go through them in your mind, checklist-style you will find a lot of answer that you won't find any other way. So limiting this big general objection that so disturbed Alfred North Whitehead is very important, and there are mental tricks that help do the job.
A special version of this “man with a hammer syndrome” is terrible, not only in economics but practically everywhere else, including business. It's really terrible in business. You've got a complex system and it spews out a lot of wonderful numbers that enable you to measure some factors. But there are other factors that are terribly important, yet there's no precise numbering you can put to these factors. You know they're important, but you don't have the numbers. Well practically everybody 1) Over-weights the stuff that can be numbered, because it yields to the statistical techniques they're taught in academia, and 2) doesn't mix in the hard-to-measure stuff that may be more important. That is a mistake I've tried all my life to avoid, and I have no regrets for having done that.
My fifth criticism is too little synthesis in economics. Not only with matters outside traditional economics, but also within economics. I have posed at two different business schools the following problem. I say “You have studied supply and demand curves. You have learned that when you raise the price, ordinarily the volume you can sell goes down, and when you reduce the price, the volume you can sell goes up. Is that right? That's what you've learned?” They all nod eyes. And I say “Now you tell me several instances when, if you want the physical volume to go up, the correct answer is to increase the price?” And there's this long and ghastly pause. And finally in each of the two business school in which I've tried this. Maybe one person in fifty could name one instance. They come up with the idea that occasionally a higher price acts as a rough indicator of quality and thereby increases sales volumes.
This happened in the case of my friend Bill Ballhaus. When he was head of Beckman Instruments it produced some complicated product where if it failed it caused enormous damage to the purchaser. It wasn't a pump at the bottom of an oil well, but that's a good mental example. And he realized that the reason this thing was selling so poorly, even though it was better than anybody else's product, was because it was priced lower. It made people think it was a low quality gizmo. So he raised the price by 20% or so and the volume went way up. But only one in fifty can come up with this sole instance in a modern business school, one of the business schools being Stanford, which is hard to get into. And nobody has et come up with the main answer that I like. Supposed you raise the price, and use the extra money to bribe the other guy's purchasing agent? Is that going to work? And are there functional equivalents in economics, microeconomics of raising the price and using the extra sales proceeds to drive sales higher? And of course there are a zillion once you've made that mental jump. It's so simple.
Berkshire had this former savings and loan company, and it had made this loan on a hotel right opposite to the Hollywood Park Racetrack. In due time the neighbourhood changed and it was full of gangs, pimps, and dope dealers. They tore copper pipe out of the wall for dope fixes, and there were people hanging around the hotel with guns, and nobody would come. We foreclosed on it two or three times, and the loan value went down to nothing. We seemed to have an insolvable economic problem, microeconomics problem.
Now we could have gone to McKinsey, or maybe a bunch of professors from Harvard, and we would have gotten a report about 10 inches thick about the ways we could approach this failing hotel in this terrible neighbourhood. But instead, we put a sign on the property that said For sale or rent“ and in came, in response to that sign, a who said “I'll spend $200,000 fixing up your hotel, and buy it at a high price on credit if you can get zoning so I can turn the parking lot into a putting green.”
“You've got to have a parking lot in a hotel” we said.
“What do you have in mind?” he said.
“No my business is flying seniors in from Florida, putting them near the airport, and then letting them go out to Disneyland and various places by bus and coming back. And I don't care how bad the neighbourhood is going to be because my people are self contained behind walls. All they have to do is get on the bus in the morning and come home in the evening, and they don't need a parking lot they need a putting green.” So we made the deal with the guy. The whole thing worked beautifully and the loan got paid off, and it all worked out.
Well I've taken you part way through the synthesis. It gets harder when you want to figure out how much activity should be within private firms, and how much should be within the government, and what are the factors that determine which functions are where, and why do the failures occur, and so on and so on.
It's my opinion that anybody with a high IQ who graduated in economics ought to be able to sit down and write a ten page synthesis of all these ideas that's quite persuasive. And I would bet a lot of money that I could give this test in practically every economics department in the country, and get a perfectly lousy bunch of synthesis. They'd talk about transaction costs. They'd click off a little something that their professors gave them and spit it back. But in terms of really understanding how it all fits together, I would confidently predict that most people couldn't do it very well.
By the way if any of you want to try and do this, go ahead. I think you'll find it hard. In this connection, one of the interesting things that I want to mention is that Max Planck, the great Nobel laureate who found Planck's Constant, tried once to do economics. He gave it up. Now why did Max Planck, one of the smartest people who ever live, give up economics? The answer is he said “It's too hard. The best solution you can get is messy and uncertain” It didn't satisfy Planck's craving for order, and so he gave it up. If Max Planck early on realized he was never going to get perfect order, I will confidently predict all of the rest of you are going to have exactly the same result.
Extreme counterproductive psychological ignorance in economics. Here I want to give you a very simple problem. I specialize in simple problems. You own a small casino in Las Vegas. It has fifty standard slot machines. Identical in appearance, they're identical in function. They have exactly the same payout ratios. The things that cause the payouts are exactly the same. They occur in the same percentages. But there's one machine in this group of slot machines, no matter where you put it among the fifty, in fairly short order, when you go to the machines at the end of the day, there will be 25% more winnings from this one machine than from any other machine. Now surely I'm not going to have a failure here. What is different about the heavy winning machine? Can anybody do it?
Male: More people play it.
Charles Munger: No, no, I want to know why more people play it. What's different about that machine is people have used modern electronics to give a higher ratio of near misses. That machine is going bar, bar, lemon. Bar, bar, grapefruit, way more often than normal machines, and that will cause heavier play. How do you get an answer like that? Easy, obviously there's a psychological cause: That machine is doing something to trigger some basic psychological response.
If you know the psychological factors, if you've got them on a checklist in your head, you just run down the factors, and boom! You get to one that must explain this occurrence. There isn't any other way to do it effectively. These answers are not going to come to people who don't learn these mental tricks. If you want to go through life like a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest, why be my guest. But if you want to succeed, like a strong man with two legs, you have to pick up these tricks, including doing economics while knowing psychology.
My ninth objection. Not enough attention to virtue and vice effects in economics. It has been plain to me since early life that there are enormous virtue effects in economics, and also enormous vice effects. But economics get very uncomfortable when you talk about virtue and vice. It doesn't lend itself to a lot of columns of numbers. But I would argue that there are big virtue effects in economics, and also enormous vice effects. It doesn't lend itself to a lot of columns of numbers. But I would argue that there are big virtue effects in economics. I would say that the spreading of double-entry bookkeeping by the Monk, Fra Luca de Pacioli was a big virtue effect in economics. It made business more controllable and it made it more honest. Then the cash register. The cash register did more for human morality than the congregational church. It was a really powerful phenomenon to make an economic system work better, just as, in reverse, a system that can be easily defrauded ruins a civilization. A system that's very hard to defraud, like a cash register, helps the economic performance of civilization by reducing vice, but very few people within economics talk about it in those terms.
Religion. I say economic systems work better when there's an extreme reliability ethos. And the traditional way to get a reliability ethos, at least in past generations in America, was through religion. The religions instilled guilt. We have a charming Irish Catholic priest in our neighbourhood and he loves to say, “Those old Jews may have invented guilt, but we perfected it” And this guilt, derived from religion has been a huge driver of a reliability ethos, which has been very helpful to economic outcomes for man.
When I was young, everybody was excited by Godel who came up with proof that you couldn't have a mathematical system without a lot of irritating incompleteness in it. Well, since then my betters tell me that they've come up with more irremovable defects in mathematics and have decided that you're never going to get mathematics without some paradox in it. No matter how hard you work, you're going to have to live with some paradox if you're a mathematician.
Well, if the mathematicians can't get the paradox out of their system when the're creating it themselves, the poor economists are never going to get rid of paradoxes, nor are any of the rest of us. It doesn't matter. Life is interesting with some paradox. When I run into a paradox I think either I'm a total horse's ass to have gotten to this point, or I'm fruitfully near the edge of my discipline. It adds excitement to life to wonder which it is.

Super Mario Party: More Mario, Less Party
Super Mario Party recently hit store shelves and Nintendo touted this entry in the series as a return to form for the series, going back to what the series was pre Mario Party 9-10 and some would argue 8. For those wondering if the game lives up to that promise, the answer is complicated.
Mario Party is a series that I have always admired from afar. I owned 1 and 3 on the N64 when I was a child, and when the GameCube hit, I rented 4 and 5. it is only recently that I have had the chance to play 6, and I borrowed 7 from a friend when I was in high school. By the time the Wii rolled around, I had lost interest in playing the series, as the motion controls shoe-horned into every Wii game made it hard to enjoy playing. 9 and 10 were a departure from the series formula, as the company responsible for the Mario Party series was bought by Konami and subsequently shut down. However anyone who has played those games can tell you that they certainly did not live up to the Mario Party name.
When it was announced that Super Mario Party would be bringing back the original format for the series, their was an air of hesitant anticipation around it. In some aspects it delivers, but in others it fails to execute.
Starting with Super Mario Party’s strongest point, it’s minigames. The Minigames in a Mario Party game are a big part of what makes the game a Mario Party game, and the ones featured here are no exception. The games in Super Mario Party are some of the best they have been in a while. Shout outs to Slaparazzi, a game where players must fight each other to get front and center for a picture, it’s a chaotic mess, and one that I feel like I could continue playing for hours. The way that the series has handled minigame practice has changed as well, in the past, there would be a practice round that players could choose if they were unfamiliar with the game. In Super Mario Party, practice takes place on the instruction menu for each game.
While the minigames are certainly a strong showing, as we learned from the top 100, they are only a part of what makes a good Mario party game.
Another piece of this puzzle is the boards, and honestly, this is where the game really starts to slip. for starters there are only 4 boards, 3 to begin with and 1 unlockable board. In addition to the small number, the boards themselves are also tiny. To compensate for this, the dice rolls allowed are extremely limiting. At the beginning of each players turn they are present with a die numbered 1-6, each character also has their own unique die that has a set of numbers on it that can either be helpful or detrimental. Some dice may have multiples of a number making it more likely to roll if you need it in a pinch, others may have higher numbers, but compensate by also having minus coins on a side or 2. Because of these limited rolls however, in some cases it can be very possible to end up some place you absolutely don’t want to be. One of the boards is a series of islands connected by two bridges, but you can also use warp pipes to move to the opposite island from the one you started on. These pipes are activated by landing on either of the two event spaces in front of them. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be much of a problem, however, I rolled an 11 with one of my items, and made an entire lap around one of the islands. This small space, combined with the lower than normal rolls, means that at any given time you have a 1 in 3 chance of taking a warp pipe to somewhere you didn’t want to be. for me, this was beyond frustrating, as this happened to me 7 times out of our 15 turn game. This means roughly half the time I was playing, I was warping this way and that beyond my control.
Speaking of items, the variety in this game is lacking. the mushroom, golden mushroom, and poison mushroom have all made a return, however the way they work is different than how it used to be. mushrooms and golden mushrooms add +3 and +5 to your rolls respectively. where the poison mushroom is a flat -2 to any opponents roll. Other items exist such as the custom dice block, which allows you to pick any number of spaces to move between 1 and 6, the hidden block card which summons a hidden block, which may hold coins or even a star, the coinnado, which takes 10 coins from a chosen player, and the ally phone, more on that later. The big item in the game though, is the golden pipe, this serves the same purpose that magic lamps did in the previous games, it can take a person directly to a star, or so close to it that it would be impossible for them to not get it. Unlike the magic lamps however, the golden pipe is far too easy to come by, you might be given one from a random item space, or you can by them from item shops for the low price of 10 coins. for perspective, in earlier entries, the magic lamp could cost as much as 30 coins, and the star was an additional 20, making for a total of 50. Super Mario Party has dulled the pain though, as stars only cost 10 coins to obtain now, meaning the total loss is only 20 coins. this makes the stars far easier to get, but at the same time eliminates most of the drive to be good at the game. Minigames now award 2nd and 3rd place prizes, though small, it doesn’t take much to reach the 10 coin goal to obtain a star, or t6he 20 coin goal if done through the pipe.
In addition to all of this, the game suffers most from a lack of personality. The announcer sounds bored every time they say anything. The minigame roulette is bland, and the navigation leaves much to be desired. One cute thing that was pointed out though is that whenever the map is brought up, the character whose turn it is will actually pull a map out of their pocket and look at it. Attention to detail like that is something that Nintendo is really good at, it just hurts a little bit that the game itself feels lacking because of the way everything else is.
I won’t complain about the characters, there are a lot of them, and if for some reason you’ve ever wanted to play Mario Party as a Monty Mole, then Super Mario Party has you covered. Variety is never bad. Especially in this case, as their is now an ally system in place. through the use of the ally phone, or ally spaces on the board, a secondary character can be summoned and their character block will be added to your inventory. They themselves can also help with dice rolls, but their dice only have 1′s and 2′s on them, so it doesn’t add much. It is possible to summon a second ally to help you as well. in addition to dice rolls, ally’s also take part in special team minigames where they might be of use.
I really want to like Super Mario Party, because despite it’s flaws, I had a lot of fun playing it. Certainly it is a step in the right direction to returning the series to its former self, but it doesn’t reach far enough on most accounts.
It’s hard to recommend Super Mario Party to most people because while it can be a good time, it will likely get stale fast. However, if you have some friends who don’t mind the same 4 boards, Super Mario Party is available on Nintendo Switch.

After a Natural Disaster, Is It Better to Rebuild or Retreat?
By John Schwartz, NY Times, Dec. 13, 2018
NEW ORLEANS--Should communities hit over and over again by natural disasters--like hurricanes, fires, earthquakes and tornadoes--keep rebuilding? Or should they retreat from areas that are especially disaster prone?
It’s a question that will become only more urgent as climate change continues to fuel extreme weather. And it is especially resonant here in New Orleans, which has suffered untold extreme weather events in its 300-year history. The most damaging, of course, was 13 years ago, when the winds and rains of Hurricane Katrina breached the city’s flawed hurricane defenses.
It could apply to San Juan, P.R., still struggling to recover from Hurricane Maria; to towns in California virtually erased by forest fires; to neighborhoods in Houston repeatedly soaked by rising waters.
The rebuilding question was asked by Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The New York Times and a native of New Orleans, during a discussion with Mitch Landrieu, the former New Orleans mayor and lieutenant governor of Louisiana, and Walter Isaacson, the best-selling author and professor of history at Tulane University.
Mr. Baquet described driving around San Juan after Hurricane Maria and wondering whether some areas were so damaged and are so delicate that they should not be rebuilt. He said the same of driving around New York City after Hurricane Sandy.
It is a question many people asked about New Orleans in the days after Hurricane Katrina, when so much of the city was under water and so much essential infrastructure had been destroyed. Dennis Hastert, the speaker of the House of Representatives at the time, said flatly that rebuilding “doesn’t make sense to me.”
That kind of thinking rankles Mr. Landrieu, who was Louisiana’s lieutenant governor during Hurricane Katrina. “The people in New Orleans get really defensive about this,” he said.
But, simply saying that people should not live in a place ignores reality, he said. “You can’t just pick up people and say, ‘You have to go somewhere else.’ The world doesn’t work that way.”
About 85 percent of Americans live in places that might be considered at risk, he said. “You have to protect yourself by making yourself stronger,” he added, with design and construction that help the population withstand and recover from disaster.
Professor Isaacson, also a native New Orleanian, said the lessons of Hurricane Katrina had yet to be learned in other vulnerable parts of the country. Hospitals in the city had to be evacuated in 2005 because the hurricane caused extensive power blackouts--seven years later, during Hurricane Sandy, New York hospitals also had to be evacuated. Now, New York is doing what New Orleans had to do, taking steps like strengthening buildings, hardening power infrastructure and elevating generators.
To a large degree, New Orleans has made its way back since Hurricane Katrina. More than 17.7 million people visited the city in 2017 and spent an estimated $8.7 billion, a record. There are more restaurants for them to choose from than there were before the storm.
The city has regained roughly 81 percent of its pre-Katrina population, and many neighborhoods no longer show signs of the flood. But the hard-hit Lower Ninth Ward still has less than half its pre-hurricane population.
The city still struggles with a stubbornly high crime rate, and roughly 27 percent of residents live in poverty. Rents are significantly higher since Hurricane Katrina, and so are housing prices and homeowner’s insurance.
The new mayor, LaToya Cantrell, took office this year and inherited a rickety water and drainage system that will be expensive to fix, yet that infrastructure will have to be upgraded for the city to thrive.
The nation has spent billions of dollars since Hurricane Katrina on levees, flood walls, gates and pump stations around the city. But even if that is effective, Mr. Landrieu said, “If climate change continues to do what it does, if sea levels continue to rise, if the land continues to shrink, in 30 or 40 years New Orleans is going to be an island protected by this $14.6 billion barrier that we have.”
Following are excerpts from a conversation between Mr. Baquet and Mr. Landrieu. They have been edited and condensed.
MR. BAQUET After Katrina, I know the city has made a dramatic comeback. But let me ask a challenging question. What are the things that New Orleans failed to do? What were the lost opportunities?
MR. LANDRIEU As a mayor, there are only so many hours in the day and so many dollars. And given what we had to do, we did really great. But it’s obviously true that we haven’t solved all of our problems.
So what did we miss? The city was too corrupt in a state that was too corrupt. We let education get away from us; our kids were being educated in awful buildings, and they weren’t learning very much. Although crime and the murder rate continue to go down, it’s still way too high. Income inequality continues to plague us.
So if the city’s going to succeed like all great cities--Detroit’ll survive, Chicago, which was in a bad place in the ‘60s, has come back--you need a good couple of generations of really good leadership. The city’s got a long way to go. It’s still one of the great cities of the world. But from an infrastructure perspective, we’re in a really bad situation.
MR. BAQUET Are there places that shouldn’t be rebuilt? I’m not just talking about New Orleans. I’ve spent six years in California--there are places where the wildfires are that people once didn’t live. Do you rebuild all of New Orleans East? Do you rebuild the parts of San Juan that are going to get whacked in the next storm?
MR. LANDRIEU We’re going to get hit by a lot of stuff. In the West, you’re going to continue to get wildfires; you’re going to get earthquakes. In the heartland, you’re going to get tornadoes. In the East, you’re going to get hurricanes. Eighty-five percent of the people in this country live in and around what we would call vulnerable areas.
If climate change continues to do what it does, in 30 or 40 years New Orleans is going to be an island protected by the $14.6 billion levy barrier that we have, and everything south of I-10 is going to be compromised.
If you back up a little bit--and don’t get too afraid--within 100 years, the parallel where Austin and Atlanta are, is going to be the southern part of the country. That requires you to do a lot of thinking about prevention, about where people can live, where to put massive infrastructure investments. And the country’s really not having an honest discussion about that.
