Hi, friends. I’ve been pretty inactive on here for the last month and I wanted to give you all an update about what’s going on. Because the truth is that things are not looking good for me.

As you may recall, I’ve been battling my colon cancer for a few years now. My fight started in 2017, and then began again in early 2021. Since then I’ve been in and out of the hospitals, doing lots of chemo, and some radiation as well. Last month, abdominal pain and CT scans revealed a new obstruction in my colon, so I’ve been in the hospital since Dec. 9, 2022.

The reality is that my cancer is taking over my body and shutting me down. The chemo can’t fight it anymore. I received a prognosis from the doctors a couple days ago, and they estimated that I have about a month left. It’s a shorter amount of time than we ever expected to hear. We continue to hope, as I have defeated the odds before, but with the way things are progressing, the fact is that this timeline looks very realistic. We are continuing to process this news while still cycling through the stages of grief and also making huge decisions for how I can spend my remaining time.

I will be transitioning from the hospital to home care tomorrow, Monday, January 23.

This is the saddest and scariest time of my life. Moment to moment I don’t know how I’m going to feel as the emotions race each other. But I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. You all have brought me so much relief and distraction and joy over the years. I have made incredible friendships through the internet, through fanfiction and through tumblr and through instagram and through fandom and through the podcast. Thank you all for being there for me, for supporting me, for showing me so much love, for surprising me, for giving to me, for making me things. I’ll never have enough words to express what the tumblr community has done for me.

I don’t know how active I’ll be in posting over the next few weeks. Possibly very active as I need distraction but possibly very inactive as I focus on the people around me as much as possible. Please don’t hesitate to reach out though, as I will absolutely continue to check my inbox and chat messages.

Personal Tumblr story time.

Yesderday was @droo216 memorial service in our hometown in Ohio. Drew’s been one of my best friends since my sophomore year of high school.

At the junior and senior picnic back in 2007, we traded toys they gave us. He gave me his water gun for my little toy turtle.

Drew named him Sprite and he kind of became the mascot for our group of friends, affectionately named The Crew.

Drew took Sprite everywhere. Out of the country, some of our get togethers the last eighteen years, Florida, Vegas just to name a few.

When I went with the Crew to go visit Drew at the end of January, a few weeks after he had told us how much time he had left, I managed to snap a picture. It brought a smile to my face that he was still there keeping Drew company all this time.

Fast forward to yesterday. The Crew got together again, only this time to say goodbye. Drew’s dad stopped me as we were looking at memories of him and said to me, “Drew left something for you. This was the only thing he left for his friends, and he told us to please get this to you, Naomi.” He opened up his hand and it was Sprite.

I cried, the whole Crew did. I am honored that Drew would even think of me after everything that was going on these last two months. I will treasure Sprite for the rest of my days.

I miss you and I love you, Drew.

I've been back on Tumblr for a few days now. I've been trying to explore old tags, discover more content for my feed, and see who was still active from those I followed. There are only few accounts that I recognized right away. One of them was The incredible and imaginative @droo216

The familiar Peter Pan icon and username triggered a feeling of warm nostalgia. The Disney Live Action reimagining's were iconic. The creativity and love for Disney and other films/tv shows were shown thru the art.

It was sad to see the first post was from 6 months ago. It was a picture of Drew with a message about his passing. Apparently he had battled with colon cancer and earlier this year, he was told that he a month to live. His page was filled with sympatric and loving messages. Everyone practically felt the same way...people were inspired his by his art and shared their thoughts and love. It was nice to see that.

I didn't know the artist behind the art. I was more familiar with the art than the artist. Shoot, it was my first seeing his face...let alone knowing that his name. But it was nice to see the creator of art that is a staple of culture during Tumblr's prime and will continue to be viewed widely on Pinterest.

I have loved your blog from afar for years now. For years I’ve admired your opinions and art and writings the way a fan would a creator of some sort. And i always told myself one day I’d put my awe-born shyness aside and tryyy talking to you (even now a mix of some shyness and anxiety and a bit of guilt makes me wonder if sending this is cruel or irritating).

Because of my bad memory and spotty activity on here, I can’t remember if I knew of your battle at some point but then figured you got better or if I never knew or something in between. But I’m so terribly sorry for what you’re going through and I hope you beat the odds again.

Either way I just want you to know you’ve meant a lot to me over these years and I’m rooting for you and I really care about you. I’m sorry it took til now to say anything
