"While tourists visiting Mexican beaches complain about piles of smelly seaweed, one Mexican gardener reckoned it was something like a gift.
The governments in places like Cancun have been required to clear away as much as 40,000 tons of sargassum seaweed, which smells like rotten eggs, but Omar de Jesús Vazquez Sánchez is steering it away from the landfills and into a kiln, where he makes adobe-like blocks that pass regulation as a building material.
He started SargaBlock to market the bricks, which are being highlighted by the UN Development Program as a stroke of brilliance, and a sustainable solution to a current environmental problem.
His story begins back in 2015 when, like any experienced laborer, he found rich people were stuck with a job they didn’t want to do. In this case, it was cleaning up the sargassum on the beaches of the Riviera Maya.
Omar grew up in poverty, immigrated to the US as a child to become a day laborer, and eventually dropped out of school and became a substance abuser. The American dream never appealed to him as much as a “Mexican dream”—a mix of memories from his childhood and dreams of being a gardener back home, so he moved back.
His time feeling unwanted as an addict and immigrant gave him a unique perspective on the smelly seaweed.
“When you have problems with drugs or alcohol, you’re viewed as a problem for society. No one wants anything to do with you. They look away,” Omar told Christian Science Monitor in a translated interview.
“When sargassum started arriving, it created a similar reaction. Everyone was complaining, I wanted to mold something good out of something everyone saw as bad.”
Tumblr media
The ecology and environment offices of Quintana Roo, the legislative area that includes the city of Cancun, approved the SargaBlocks for use, and similar organic-based blocks have been reckoned as being capable of enduring 120 years.
The UN Development Program selected Omar’s work to be featured in their Accelerator Lab global broadcast to alert the world of its value and ingenuity.
Tumblr media
There are all kinds of naturally-occurring pollutants or burdens that could be used in construction, and the UNDP hoped that by sharing Omar’s vision of the future of the Caribbean’s sargassum problem, it would inspire others to act in similar ways.
Bricks and cement can be great sources to use up naturally-occurring material that’s dangerous or burdensome—like this Filippino community using the ash from volcanic eruptions to make bricks.
Omar has been fortunate enough to be able to donate 14 “Casas Angelitas,” or homes made of SargaBlock, to families in need, and seems to be exceedingly close to achieving his “Mexican dream.”"

While raising her children in Harlem, Hale developed a deep sympathy for abandoned and neglected children. In the 1940s, she began providing short-term and long-term care for community children in her home. She also found permanent homes for homeless children and taught parents essential parenting skills. In 1960, she became a licensed foster parent, providing care for hundreds of children in her home. Hale's success as a foster parent earned her the affectionate nickname of "Mother Hale."
In 1969, at the age of 64, Hale became the foster parent of an infant addicted to cocaine. She responded to needs of other children with this affliction by founding a groundbreaking foster care program in Harlem, Hale House. The respite care program also provided training to drug-addicted mothers on how to improve the health of their chemically dependent babies. Hale's unique program required mothers to live in Hale House with their children and attend a drug rehabilitation program. In the 1980s, Hale expanded Hale House services to include care for infants stricken with HIV and those who had lost parents to AIDS.
By 1991, Hale House cared for approximately 1,000 infants and toddlers. During her distinguished career, Hale received numerous honors and awards for her community service. She received an honorary doctorate from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and public service awards from the National Mother's Day Committee and the Truman Award for Public Service. In 1985, during his State of the Union Address, President Ronald Reagan referred to Hale as an "American hero" for her commitment to at-risk children.
Clara McBride Hale died on December 18, 1992 in New York City at the age of 87.
•••

Mae-ho Aniseya: Film Noir Protagonist
(Spoilers for The Acolyte)
Tumblr media
As I've said in another post, Mae and Osha are binary opposites in their personalities and motivations.
Mae has a kind of "first child syndrome": a desire to exhibit perfection in the eyes of her mothers, so that they can shower her with praise. She loves being in her community of witches, learning and using the Thread, and indulging in the daily activities of life on Brendok.
She thrives when she is surrounded by her people, but Osha doesn't want the same things, which is something that confuses Mae deeply.
In this scene from Episode 3: Destiny, the two sisters as children talk about what they want:
Tumblr media
MAE: "It isn't fair. I share everything with you, and you hide things from me or run off alone." OSHA: "I want to have my own things." MAE: "Why?" OSHA: "Because I don't want to do everything together all the time." MAE: "But why?" OSHA: "Because we're not the same." [...] OSHA: "Don't you wonder what else could be out there? Besides Brendok?" MAE: "No. Everything I need is here."
For Osha, her arc in The Acolyte has all the trappings of a dark romance. But from Mae's perspective, she's the heroine of her own Film Noir.
Film Noir Themes in The Acolyte
Beyond its aesthetics, Film Noir has three (3) major thematic characteristics with regard to its protagonists:
Its protagonist has an idyllic past where they were happy and life was good;
Their idyllic past is ripped away from them, often violently, in a single moment that they relive again and again in the present;
The inciting incident is an opportunity to reclaim their idyllic past, or if that's impossible, to get justice for what was lost... because to do nothing is to be haunted by it forever.
For example, we can look at the seasonal arc of Veronica Mars (2004): she's a happy high schooler and best friends with Lily Kane, then Lily is murdered and Veronica is ostracised from her former friends, and now she is seeking opportunities to solve her friend's murder, while being haunted by the memories of her.
Tumblr media
Or consider the video game Max Payne (1998): he's a cop with a happy wife and daughter, then his wife and daughter are murdered by drug addicts high on Compound V, now he joins the DEA in an effort to find and destroy the source of Compound V, and finally stop feeling haunted by the memories of his family.
Mae's story is very similar: she was a happy kid living with a family and community that gave her everything she wanted, then the Jedi came and massacred everyone she loved, and now she's joined up with a powerful ally who will teach her to get bloody justice.
Tumblr media
Mae's Fatal Flaw
Mae's biggest problem is that she's impulsive and frequently enters situations without a clear plan. However, this bullheadedness shows that she trusts herself to get out of any situation she finds herself in.
(Qimir once said to Osha "you should learn to trust yourself", but I doubt this is a lesson he had to teach Mae.)
Detractors often say that Mae's motivations don't make sense, or that she's "flip flopping" all the time. But this criticism -- like most criticisms from the fandom menace -- is unfair. Mae's motivations are very clear, and her shifting tactics are done as a response to new information that comes her way.
In Episodes 1 and 2, her goal is two-fold:
Hunt down the four guilty Jedi
Keep The Stranger satisfied in her progress as his apprentice
But in Episode 4 and 5, after she learns that her sister lives, her goal changes to "reunite with Osha." But when Osha refuses to listen to her, Mae's slightly modifies her goal, to "find a way to de-program Osha from her Jedi brainwashing, by exposing Sol."
Viewers that understand what drives Mae see that not flaky; she's adaptive.
The Fatal Lesson of Film Noir
The thing about Film Noir protagonists is that most of the time (not always, but most of the time), their quest for reclaiming their idyllic past is a fool's errand: they either sacrifice a big part of themselves in the attempt, or they learn to heal form the past, let go, and move on.
Mae opts for the former. When she finally succeeds in revealing that Sol has been lying for sixteen years, Osha murders him. Afterward, Osha bargains for Mae's life, which the Stranger accepts but only if he be permitted to erase her memories.
So Mae recaptures her idyllic past by being able to reconnect with her sister... only to lose her sense of self in the process. The quest consumed her.

"These calls for “getting tough” also generated debate and bitter exchanges between different groups claiming to represent African Americans. Some critics insisted that “law and order” operated as a euphemism for anti-black and anti–civil rights sentiments. Leonard De Champs, chairman of the Harlem Chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), excoriated the NAACP, calling it “oppressive and Nazi-like for its Fascist proposals regarding law and order in the streets of Harlem and New York City’s other Black communities.” He charged that
Vincent Baker’s love for mandated jail sentences and tightened-up parole procedures conclusively proves that the NAACP is an effective enemy of the 1.2 million Black people in this city.
Floyd McKissick, a longtime civil rights activist and another leader of CORE, claimed that the NAACP’s punitive recommendations reflected the interests of the black middle class. He wrote that
the arguments used in the report of the NAACP smack suspiciously of the Ronald Reagan-George Wallace school of repressive ‘law and order,’ at any cost. They appeal to the fears and prejudices of citizens who have even a little bit worth protecting.
He pointed to “a gap of understanding between middle class and poor Blacks along economic lines” and explained that
we should know by now that the addition of more white cops in the ghetto solves nothing. The ones who suffer more from such measures are the poor blacks; not necessarily the guilty ones.
Instead of harsher punishment, McKissick called for community control:
The ghetto must be safe for its citizens, but it cannot be made so by police state tactics. All efforts must be directed toward the ending of conditions which breed crime and chaos; all efforts much be directed toward the development of a Black-orientated, Black controlled law enforcement agency—an agency dedicated to the aid and protection of Black people, not to their suppression.
During this period, a host of community groups and organizations set up treatment programs, many of which received New York City and state funds, intended to be more directly accountable to thecommunities in which they were embedded. Some grew out of churches and established community groups, while others were connected to more radical political organizing. For example, in March 1969, eighty volunteers and twenty-two drug addicts took over a three-story building in Harlem and set up a drug-treatment program. They hoped to bring attention to “the inadequacy of the state’s narcotic program and the entire health program for the black people.” The addicts involved told the New York Times that they had faced a maze of waiting lists and applications in their efforts to secure treatment. One had never heard back from a program he had applied to three years earlier in 1966. The journalist reported that all of the patients interviewed complained that the state’s drug addiction programs were “more punishment than rehabilitation.” One addict asked if “I should turn myself in to the state and be locked up for rehabilitation.” They contrasted the civic degradation of the state treatment programs with guerrilla programs, claiming that in the latter, they “talk to you like a man, not a statistic—the people really want to help you and it makes you want to help yourself.” After a police eviction order, the center was closed and the patients transferred to an “underground hospital.” In subsequent years, other groups also established treatment programs. The Young Lords, a radical group dedicated to Puerto Ricans’ self-determination, were integral to establishing a detox program at Lincoln Hospital.
Drastic fluctuations in policing further intensified frustration within urban communities. In 1969, the city initiated a major intensification in street-level enforcement of drug markets. At a press conference in September, Mayor Lindsay announced that the police department intended to shift the narcotics division’s 500-person force to the pursuit of upper-level drug arrests and direct the entire remaining patrols to prioritize narcotic arrests at the street level. This sweep produced a considerable uptick in narcotics arrests in New York City: they jumped from 7,199 in 1967 to 26,378 in 1970. Then, in 1971, at a high point in the surge of heroin use, the NYPD abandoned their campaign of intensive street-level drug policing. Police officials claimed that the policy was ineffective and expensive and resulted in low conviction rates because the court system did not have the capacity to process the arrests. The result was a dramatic fall-off in arrests. New York City police conducted over 24,025 felony drug arrests in 1970, 18,694 in 1971, 10,370 in 1972, and 7,041 in 1973."

Binge drinking is characterized by the consumption of large quantities of alcohol in a short period, typically leading to a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or higher. For men, this usually means consuming five or more drinks in about two hours, and for women, four or more drinks. While binge drinkers may not drink every day, the pattern can still lead to significant health and social problems.
Heavy Drinking
Heavy drinking involves regular consumption of alcohol at levels that exceed standard guidelines.
Functional Alcoholism
Functional alcoholics often maintain what appears to be a normal life, with steady employment, relationships, and responsibilities. Despite this, they are dependent on alcohol and may drink heavily or regularly.
Young Adult Subtype
This subtype typically includes individuals in their late teens and early twenties who engage in binge drinking and heavy drinking but may not drink every day. They often have fewer co-occurring mental health issues and generally have less severe alcohol dependence.
Young Antisocial Subtype
Young antisocial alcoholics also tend to start drinking at a young age and often have a family history of alcoholism. This subtype is characterized by antisocial behavior, including a higher likelihood of engaging in criminal activities and other risky behaviors.
Intermediate Familial Subtype
This subtype includes middle-aged individuals with a significant family history of alcoholism. These individuals often start drinking in their teenage years and may experience moderate levels of alcohol dependence. They frequently have co-occurring mental health disorders such as depression.
Chronic Severe Subtype
Chronic severe alcoholics represent the most severe form of alcohol addiction. They often have high levels of alcohol dependence, a long history of drinking, and numerous alcohol-related problems, including health issues and legal troubles.
High-Functioning Alcoholism
High-functioning alcoholics are similar to functional alcoholics but may hold high-level jobs, have advanced degrees, and maintain a seemingly successful social life. Despite their outward success, their dependency on alcohol can have severe consequences over time.

Time Period/Location: The planets Caladan, Arrakis, and Giedi Prime; 20,000 years into humanity's future.
First Line: In the week before their departure to Arrakis, when all the final scurrying about had reached a nearly unbearable frenzy, an old crone came to visit the mother of the boy, Paul.
Paul Atreides is the son of Leto Atreides, the Duke of the planet Caladan, and Lady Jessica, Leto's concubine and a woman of the secretive Bene Gesserit. Leto is appointed Duke of Arrakis, the desert planet that produces spice. Spice is the most valuable product in the universe, allowing members of the Spacing Guild to see into the future in order to navigate through space, as computers and such technology are banned. The infamous Harkonnens formerly controlled the planet, but the Emperor stripped them of the privilege and gave it to Leto in order to pit the two houses against each other further and prompt Baron Vladimir Harkonnen into destroying House Atreides. The book begins when the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam of the Bene Gesserit visits Jessica and Paul amidst the moving chaos. She tells Paul to put his hand in a box where he is to feel immense pain, and she holds a poison dart at his neck to keep him from retracting it. This was a test, as she says, to see if Paul was truly human. She scolds Jessica for producing a male, saying she was supposed to bear a female to keep the breeding plan in place. By birthing a male, Jessica tried to create the Kwisatz Haderach, the male savior of the universe that the Bene Gesserit have been trying to produce for centuries through their breeding program. Paul tells the Reverend Mother of his prophetic dreams, and the Reverend Mother cautions Jessica about the future.
They travel to Arrakis and have a somewhat rough transition. Paul is almost killed by an assassin, Lady Jessica finds a mysterious warning from another Bene Gesserit, and Leto struggles to undo the damage of the Harkonnens on the populace, harvest spice with damaged equipment and the threat of sandworms, and gain the trust of the Fremen, the mysterious natives who live out in the open desert. Information is planted, and Hawat, the Atreides Mentat assassin, begins to suspect Lady Jessica of treason, just as the Harkonnens have planned. The real traitor is Doctor Yueh, but he is never suspected as he is supposed to have Imperial conditioning making him unable to kill another person. Leto sends Duncan Idaho, one of his top soldiers, to make a connection with the Fremen, and progress is being made, until Doctor Yueh drugs him and allows the Harkonnens to invade. He hates the Baron for killing and torturing his wife, however, and gives Leto a poison gas tooth so he can kill the Baron. Yueh is ultimately killed by the Baron, Leto kills the Harkonnen Mentat but the Baron escapes, Duncan Idaho, Gurney Halleck, and Hawat flee, and Paul and Jessica are captured, tied up, and dumped in the desert. On the way out, the Harkonnen soldiers attempt to r*pe Jessica, but Paul and Jessica use the Voice on them, a form of mind control, and manage to escape. Upon exposure to the spice out in the desert, Paul's Bene Gesserit and Mentat training come together and he can see the past, present, and future. He foresees himself becoming a religious icon to the Fremen called the Lisan al-Gaib and leading a holy war (jihad) across the galaxy. The Bene Gesserit planted legends and religious myths among the Fremen to protect any member of the Bene Gesserit who gets stranded among them. He decides to do his best to make sure the jihad doesn't happen. Duncan Idaho finds them the next day, along with some Fremen and Liet Kynes, a planetologist beholden to the Emperor and part of the scheme to destroy House Atreides. He, however, sees Arrakis as his home world and is deeply connected to the Fremen, and believes Paul to be the Lisan al-Gaib. He helps them escape when the Harkonnen catch up. Duncan Idaho is killed, and Kynes is captured. Jessica and Paul fly into a sandstorm and are presumed dead. Hawat is also captured by the Harkonnens. The Baron uses poison to manipulate Hawat into joining his side, and he kills Liet Kynes by dropping him into the desert. Gurney Halleck joins up with spice smugglers. Paul and Jessica go into the deep desert to find the Fremen, running from sandworms and fighting sand slides and dehydration. They are finally found by the leader of a sietch named Stilgar, who met with Leto and had befriended Duncan. They try to take Paul and kill Jessica but she bests Stilgar in combat. They agree to take them both in, and Paul then meets Chani, the Fremen girl he had been having dreams about and the daughter of Liet Kynes.
They travel to another cave the Fremen use, and Jessica and Paul begin to try to prove to the Fremen that Paul is the Lisan al-Gaib. Jamis, one of the warriors Paul had previously fought off, challenges Paul to a duel to the death. Paul kills him, and learns he must now take care of Jamis' wife and children. When they arrive at the sietch, Jessica agrees to become the new Reverend Mother. The Reverend Mothers hold the consciousness of all who came before them, but they can only access the women. Jessica, who is pregnant with a daughter, drinks the Waters of Life, a poison that opens her mind. The baby however, Alia, is also made conscious in the womb, and is later born fully conscious as well. Chani and Paul get together.
There is a time jump, and the Baron's nephew Beast Rabban, has been ruling Arrakis with an iron fist, part of the Baron's plan to then quell the dissention when his other nephew Feyd-Rautha arrives and is a better ruler. Feyd is sneaky and violent, and attempts to have the Baron killed, partly due to Hawat's scheming. Lady Fenring, a member of the Bene Gesserit who's husband is close with the Emperor, sleeps with Feyd in order to become pregnant with his child and continue the Harkonnen line. The Emperor begins to grow discontent with the Harkonnens.
On Arrakis, Paul becomes an official Fremen by riding a sandworm. His sister Alia has been born, and Chani has given birth to her and Paul's son, Leto II. Stilgar says that Paul must kill him and replace him as leader. Paul refuses, and reconnects with Gurney Halleck. He further proves himself to be the Lisan al-Gaib, especially after he drank the Water of Life and survived, something that is meant to kill any man who drinks it. He also claims his title as Duke of Arrakis. The Emperor, displeased with how the Baron has not managed to quell the Fremen rebellion, comes to Arrakis himself, and Leto II is killed and Alia is captured. Paul and the Fremen plot to wage war against the Harkonnens, the Emperor, and the rest of the great houses if need be. Alia and the Baron are brought before the Emperor, where Alia reveals that she is the Baron's granddaughter, as Jessica is his daughter. She then (at four years old) assassinates the Baron and escapes. The Emperor and his people are forced to retreat as their base is attacked. Paul reclaims the city of Arrakeen, and calls a meeting with the Emperor. Feyd-Rautha attempts to kill Paul in a duel by cheating, but Paul kills him. Then Paul offers to the Emperor that he will marry his oldest daughter Irulan and become Emperor himself. The Emperor is left with no choice but to concede.
Paul Muad'Dib Atreides (Lisan al-Gaib, Mahdi, Duke of Arrakis, Usul, Kwisatz Haderach): While Paul is the main character, he is not the hero of the story. He starts off fairly innocent, merely a 15 year old confused by his abilities but studiously honing them under Jessica and Hawat's training. When he gains access to the spice and sees the jihad, he swears he will do everything to avoid it. But ultimately he doesn't. He uses the legend of the Lisan al-Gaib in order to gain support and acceptance by the Fremen, at first under his mother's direction. But throughout the story, his desire to know the future and avenge his father takes over and he succumbs. He expresses regret and loneliness at the end as he realizes all of his friends are now his followers, but ultimately, he made all of the choices to get there. Paul would like to think this fate was simply unavoidable, but there were times where it wasn't. He could have chosen not to drink the Water of Life or try and take the throne from the Emperor.
Stilgar: I think Stilgar is a particularly interesting character because he is the exact representation of why what Paul is doing is not good. He is a strong, determined leader, but by the end becomes a fanatic worshipper of Paul, and, as Paul even notices, he become less of a person when he does so, losing his agency and cultural identity by blindly following this boy due to a fake prophecy created by the very people he fights against.
Duke Leto Atreides: Leto definitely tries his best to make the best of a bad situation by trying to ally himself with the native Fremen and protect his family from the Harkonnens as best he can. While Paul is said to be more like his grandfather, he definitely is what Leto might have turned into (without the religious fanaticism) if he had survived and continued to rule over Arrakis.
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen: Full disclosure, I did see the movies first, so I was hoping to get a more similar Baron to Stellan Skarsgård's portrayal. The book version was definitely not nearly as imposing or terrifying. Especially once we get to see his POV, he is just a slimy, greedy old creep. On the up side, this makes him very easy to hate.
Storyline: While a bit tedious in certain parts, I really enjoyed this book. I'm a sucker for good world building and immense detail to flesh out a story to make it feel real and Frank Herbert definitely succeeds in this. That said, the dialogue could be a bit strange at time, as well as Gurney's random songs, and the switching of POVs mid paragraph. Despite that, it was a unique and powerful story. There is a lot of social commentary here, addressing white saviorism, colonialism, imperialism, religious fanaticism, and a critique specifically of America taking oil from the Middle East. I especially loved all of the foreshadowing that went into this. While people say that the movies were meant to be looked into and nothing was spelled out for you, you definitely had to be paying even closer attention in the book, lest you miss out on the themes and parallels.
Quotes: -"Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."-Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (p.14) -"But let us not rail about justice as long as we have arms and the freedom to use them."-Duke Leto Atreides (p.111) -"There is probably no more terrible instant of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man--with human flesh."-Paul Atreides (p.131) -"That honorable banner could come to mean many evil things."-Duke Leto Atreides (p.134) -"There is no escape--we pay for the violence of our ancestors."-Paul Atreides (p.186) -"Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past me I will turn to see fear's path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."-Paul Atreides (p.291) -"Arrakis is a one-crop planet... It supports a ruling class that lives as ruling classes have lived in all times while, beneath them, a semihuman mass of semislaves exists on the leavings. It's the masses and the leavings that occupy our attention. i'm not necessarily arguing against you, i'm just curious, how do you think safety and people abiding the law should be held up without any police force? obviously corrupt police, police with too much power, etc, are no good, but i personally can't imagine what cops would be replaced with if even noncorrupt cops aren't acceptable. i'm interested in hearing your thoughts.
Hey anon,
The thing about cops is 99% of the time, they don't actually prevent crimes. They come in after crimes have already been committed. What we need is an approach that is about preventing them. We have tried police reform worldwide. It doesn't work. It never works.
The entire system of policing is based on punishment, not prevention. In fact, police aren't even obligated to TRY to protect people.
What we need is to tackle to problems at the root. Look at crimes and go 'why does this happen?' and make sure people don't end up in the situations that lead to that. Complete overhaul of social and community problems, universal basic income, guaranteed housing, etc. A safety net that makes it so people who are being abused feel safe coming forward from the beginning, with no risk of them losing their home, job, children, etc. A society for children and young adults where their emotional needs are cared for and they don't have access to dangerous weapons to shoot up schools. When someone has a mental break, mental health professionals especially trained in de-escalation show up, not cops. A society where we make active efforts to disentangle young boys and men from the patriarchy, lowering the amount of rape and abuse we see. Community programs in SPADES to put a stop to street violence. We need to decriminalize drugs, sex work, etc., and create support systems and networks so sex work can be safe and drug addicts can be safely rehabilitated without just throwing them in jail.
MOST crimes could be solved before they happen by this.
And yes, there are crimes out there that likely can't be prevented. You might not be able to stop Joe serial killer by giving him these outlets. But these are anomalies, actually quite rare, and we would have people for them as well; trained in forensics, investigation, etc., with the goal of preventing crimes from occurring, not just punishment.
We also need to see rehabilitation and restorative justice as the goal. Some countries are getting a lot better about that aspect.
The thing about police is they haven't been around forever. They're a recent institution (relatively speaking) that we've become reliant on, by design.
Police abolition can't happen in one day. It's a process that requires a huge amount of overhaul of our existing systems. It's something needed in every country. Police rule us, and there's nothing neutral about that. It's unacceptable.

Smoking is a top global polluter whose pollution production contributes to climate change (n.d.). Smoking is an addiction that affects emotional and physical health. The physical addiction to smoking can be traced to nicotine in each cigarette (Siegel, 2022). Vaping, tobacco, cannabis, marihuana, and other illegal drugs are considered to be a form of smoking.
Vaping affects the environment differently by generating an extremely high volume of waste (Prochaska & Velicer, 1997). Nevertheless, there is a misconception that vaping can be an alternative option to quit smoking. However, vaping is no different than smoking tobacco. That misconception led to an increase in the pandemic of vaping, which attracts the youth to flavored vapes (n.d.).
“Smoking is both physical and psychological addiction, but quitting smoking can be done. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2018 estimated that 55.1 percent of adult smokers in the United States gave up the habit for more than one day to quit. Since 2002, the CDC reports that the number of former smokers has remained greater than that of current smokers in the United States.” (Siegel, 2022).
The social environment influences smoking, and psychologists can assist with alternative behavioral changes to help individuals who want to quit smoking (Van de Brand, 2019). Quitting smoking can be challenging and impactful on physical health and emotional changes. The nicotine in cigarettes and the act of smoking harvest a calming effect of mental clarity and relaxation that is perceived as a social activity and as a coping mechanism (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (n.d.). However, smoking has the opposite effect than what is believed. It increases anxiety level tension, and over time, smokers are more likely to suffer from depression secondary to smoking, health disease, emphysema, lung cancer, as well as other medical conditions secondary to smoking. Regardless of whether it is cigarettes, vaping, or e-cigarettes, an option used mainly by young adults and teenagers is a habit that can cause lifetime health damage.
Therapeutic Approach
Smoking cessation group therapy’s objective is for smokers to learn vicariously from their peers in group sessions to quit together to motivate and stimulate each other through peer pressure to improve the quit success rate and participation in the group (Van de Brand, 2019).
Smoking cessation therapy emphasizes techniques and mechanisms to quit smoking. To date, at least 40 evaluated anti-smoking programs or campaigns. Nine programs/campaigns were motivational informational, 11 were promotion specifics cessation activities, and 20 were mass media cessation “self-help clinics” (DPhill,1987). The CDC resources for quitting are in many languages. For the purpose of this assignment, I will only provide the Spanish and English telephone numbers. There are text message services and Smartphone apps, Tips, information, and challenges to help smokers quit.

Evaluation of the Ethnic Inequalities
The evaluation is not one of ethnic inequality but one of gender inequity between men and women smokers and non-smokers. Smoking rates are higher among couples who are married or living with a partner, social isolation, socioeconomic status, and isolation (Martin et al., 2019). Research suggests that marital status or living with a partner leads to a high likelihood of quitting smoking, and having a non-smoking partner increases the possibility of quitting smoking (Martin et al., 2019).
Mass Media Programs and Campaigns Designed to Reduce Smoking Behavior.
Mass media is a significant influencer in the increase and awareness of the danger of smoking, motivating smokers to quit and helping many ex-smokers to quit successfully.
The CDC spearheaded a campaign named “TIPs” to address the health disparities in smoking cessation to bridge the gap of health equity, representation, accessibility of smoking cessation programs, and assistance for smokers who are receptive to quitting smoking regardless of income, geographic location, or who they are.
The objective of the “TIPs” campaign is to increase the awareness of free smoking cessation educational resources among adults- adults- no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they make (CDC, n.d.).
The “TIPs” campaign places a variety of tips ads in the media channels, reaching out to the community and groups with high levels of smoking-related disease management, including those populations that are disproportionally affected by tobacco use (CDC, n.d.).
The social influence attached to this research in the UK suggests that having a partner who quits smoking has a more significant impact on smoking tobacco than having a non-smoker partner (Martin et al., 2019). The workplace also favors smoking cessation, where colleagues are strongly associated with quitting success (Van de Brand, 2019).
Martin et al., 2019 report the social gradient to quit smoking on socioeconomic status in women is lower and may be less successful for men in quitting and women who had nonsmoking partners compared to women who had a partner who smokes at both points, having a partner who was non-smoker throughout was associated with a doubling of the odds of stopping smoking 99% and having a partner who smoked initially but stopped in the next four years was associated with 6 -fold increase in odds of quitting smoking 99% (Martin et al., 2019). Smoking cessation is highly associated with the workplace setting supporting smoking cessation and is strongly associated with quitting success (Van de Brand, 2019). Therefore, it is proposed that social change does influence smoking and smoking cessation.
The Role and Responsibilities of Psychology Concerning Smoking Cessation.
Psychologists have been advocates for smoking cessation throughout the years. Psychologist advocacy by APA not only gets reimbursed for being in the lineup of providing screening, smoking cessation treatments, and brief interventions for tobacco use. Action for compensation for therapeutic services, coverage for treatments, substance abuse, adopting smoke-free policies in public settings, and anti-smoking educational campaigns have been taken. Evidence-based information reflects a decrease in the use of cigarettes at the same time, contributing to the decline in smoking nationwide rates, reflecting the progress in services to help people during the challenges to quit smoking (Novotney, 2022).
Steps were taken to incorporate psychological treatments to intervene with patients’ smoking cessation therapies into existing behavioral health treatments to assist smokers with depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions (Novotney, 2022). It would be conducive to the success of the smoking cessation regimens. Wilson Compton, MD, deputy director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), reports the long-term effects of smoking cessation would lead to a healthier lifestyle for “all people” when healthcare providers take a holistic approach to health issues and patient experiences, substance abuse disorders, and mental health disorders. Novotney (2022) goes on to say with the continuity of smoking; smokers can develop depression consequently to smoking. Therefore providing assistance and skills to quit smoking is essential in any platform. whether it is at work, school, clinical setting, or everyday interactions.
Because of the addictive concerns of smoking as a mental health condition and the withdrawal symptoms as any drug dependency, the withdrawal symptoms are comparable to cocaine and heroin, resulting in craving, anxiety, agitation, nausea, depression, and dizziness (Siegel, 2022). The dependency on nicotine makes it challenging to quit smoking, whether it is cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or other tobacco products. Nevertheless, psychological treatments and critical strategies can influence behavioral changes with tools for smoking cessation.
Social Changes /Social Justice.
The theoretical framework that would shape the behavior of my social change would be the transtheoretical model or the stages of change model. This model helps navigate to understand why people “stop smoking” and “how to do it .”The transtheoretical model suggests that health behavior changes involve a process through six stages of change (Prochaska & Velicer, 1997). The transtheoretical model can help smokers move through a series of phases before they quit smoking successfully. The change cycle is a phase one goes through when implementing behavioral change. Pre-contemplation (no plans of stopping), contemplation (planning on quitting), and preparation (planning to quit within the time next 30 days) (Prochaska & Velicer, 1997). Are the steps followed or experienced before making a lifestyle change?
In preparation for changes, access to mental health care can bridge the gap between the challenges and social changes in addressing the long-term effects of smoking, motivating and helping clients to quit smoking. Promoting health education and encouraging therapeutic intervention open the doors and facilitate the process of adaptation to quit smoking.
Addressing environmental factors, research findings on the effects of nicotine, triggers, preparation, and counseling can stimulate successful smoking cessation. Consequently, it leads to better health outcomes, identifying a plethora of reasonable motivators and products of smoking support. The assistance of “Physicians, regulators, and educators should discourage youth and everyone from attempting to use e-cigarettes as a way to stop smoking.” (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).
Since better health insurance coverage for smoking cessation, developing new addiction treatment has been advocated by psychologists. The decline in smoking among adults, from 20.9% in 2005 to 12.5% in 2020, according to research by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has been noticeable (Novotney, 2022). Patient education should include community outreach, Public Announcements (PSAs), educational flyers, one-on-one patient education appointments with a smoking cessation wellness coach, psychological treatment, medical intervention, free smoking cessation medications, and no referrals required for smoking cessation counseling from primary care providers. These are great incentives, motivational tools, and resources to stop smoking.
The mentioned suggestions are important segway in exploring the methods and new perspectives to focus on adapting to changes through environmental factors, research findings, and the validity of outcomes on information, strategies, and accessible instruments as interventions for smoking cessation. At the same time, it emphasizes triggers, life experiences, practices, and beliefs that lead to smoking and vaping becoming a gateway to other drugs.
Educating smokers about resources available in the community, hospitals and mental health services, and helplines for smoking cessation are valuable tools for successfully quitting smoking.
Promoting Outreach programs in the community, mass media, reputable sources, and schools where kids are vaping flavorful e-cigarettes and vaping pens, all appealing to the younger generation by providing misleading information on TV, social media, and mass media that vaping is not as harmful as tobacco. In 2019, California researchers did some “shoe-leather investigating.” They discovered that by collecting tobacco, cannabis, and vape waste from a dozen high school parking lots across the San Francisco Bay Area, vape waste made up 19% of the litter recovered, let alone other pollutants from environmental vape (California Department of Public Health End Tobacco Damage Now, n.d.).
Therefore, parents, educators, school psychologists, school nurses, mental health professionals, and other community service programs need to educate the public on the long-term effects of smoking, e-cigarettes, vaping, tobacco, marijuana, and other smoking products effects on mental health and physical health. That will otherwise create a pandemic, and increasing dependence on smoking will become a mental health and physical public health burden that will be difficult to maneuver into incorporating behavioral change modification in the pursuit of promoting smoking cessation.
Subsequently, the goal is to incorporate psychological treatment where clients feel safe to thrive, with interventions and smoking cessation therapy, into existing behavioral health regimens for smokers with depression and any other mental health disorder or behavioral condition (Novotney, 2022).
Given the approval of the APA for secure reimbursement for psychological treatment and billing for psychotherapy services for smoking cessation. This approach will allow patients to receive care on a one-on-one basis or in a group setting for smoking cessation, including motivational interview-based interventions instead of physicians providing the treatment when psychologists are the ones who train physicians on motivational interviews and behavioral change modification.
