jed’s family and the people around him were all pretty traditional about marriage and had really good and loving relationships so as soon as jed realised he loved octavius he could not even look at him without being like ‘i need to put a fucking ring on that man. i need to wife him up right fucking now’ so the question had been in his mind for a very long time. octavius on the other hand is low key scarred for life by his first marriage and has never witnessed a positive or healthy marriage in his life so he never thought about it At All until jed asked him and he was completely caught off guard by it. but he really didn’t even have to think about it before he said yes

jed has always known that he would never want a ‘proper’ traditional wedding, and after the engagement he started to think about it more and more and got super freaked out by the idea of all the fuss and noise and attention that usually comes with a wedding. but he felt like octavius would want everything to be big and fancy and expensive and he was so nervous to tell octavius that he really didn’t want any of that. and one day jed pulls octavius to the side and is like ‘i’m really sorry please don’t hate me but i don’t think i want a wedding’ and INSTANTLY octavius is like ‘omg me neither but i was too scared to tell you’ so they end up doing everything really private and low key as possible. the closest thing they get to any kind of celebration at all is a tiny little party with their friends at their house afterwards. plus they both take a week off work that they spend entirely at home just being domestic and going ‘yay :D we r married :D’ because they can’t get over it

octavius is very happy about how low key everything was but as SOON as he gets back to work literally everyone notices he has a ring on and he has to shut down SO many awful ‘who’s the lucky lady’ questions it drives him insane. attila is the only one that talks to jed enough to notice that the ring he’s wearing matches octavius’ exactly but he doesn’t say anything

jed finds literally every excuse whenever he can to call octavius his husband because he’s still so excited about it even years after they actually get married. octavius comes in after work and jed is like ‘hello my lovely husband who i am married to. what does my beautiful sexy husband want for dinner’ when they go out to a bar jed is sitting with his friends whilst octavius is ordering drinks and jed’s like ‘that guy over there. that’s my husband’ and everyone’s like ‘we know. we were at your wedding party’ but they let him have his fun anyway

jed wants octavius to meet his sisters before they get married (again. he’s very traditional) so octavius pays for jed’s sisters to fly over and stay with them and they fully obsess over octavius for a full week. and then jed tells them on the last day that he’s getting married and his sisters FREAK OUT (octavius gets swamped in hugs upon the revelation like. possibly even more so than jed does)

on their first wedding anniversary jed gets a tattoo of octavius’ birthday in roman numerals on his wrist (and yes octavius cries about it. are you noticing a pattern here). a few years after that jed gets octavius’ initials tattooed on his chest (right over his heart. octavius cries)

I think I became so passionate about it, because I saw that I was able to change my - and my family's - future. I don't talk about my childhood much, but I grew up poor (by "western" standards). My parents didn't even graduate high school (Dtl. Gymnasium), thus they never went to university. Growing up in Germany, usually no one has to face not having food at the end of the month, but that was our reality for a long time when my parents were too ill to work. I always knew that I would give myself and my parents a better life - and then I discovered that I was super good at studying and performed so well in exams. It makes me - and everyone around me - so happy <3.

I've heard a few rumblings about this supposed professional league that may be forming. It seems well intended but not a great idea on a couple of levels. And now every time there is a random bit of information about a retired elite or recent NCAA grad (in this case Larissa Iordache in a leo on a facebook post) I return to one of my first impressions--so this is going to be the Professional Achilles Rupture League.

Let me lay out some of the things that are worth knowing if you are an American fan about how professional leagues in Europe work.

They are not a full time job... at least one team is not. It is very frequent that a gymnast who is making their living from them (or most of their living from them) is competing in 2 or 3 leagues. She might be in DTL (the German league people know as the Bundesliga), the Italian Series A, and the Spanish league. So if this is being sold as a way for gymnasts to make a living doing gymnastics you should ask some serious questions about funding (which I did and the people I spoke to didn't know details, I assume there were NDAs involved).

The European league teams have gymnasts as young as juniors through their mid to late twenties. It's one way that gymnastics is a sustainable thing for those leagues and how fan bases are built up over a long run. This model doesn't work in the United States because of NCAA eligibility concerns (which still exist NIL has nothing to do with rules against gymnasts making money as gymnasts). If you are trying to model a pro league as some kind of "healthy adult gymnastics" environment then the European model isn't it. That's not to say that the European system isn't healthy. But you can't take that model and apply it to post college age gymnasts because that is not how that model works.

One of the other things I've heard is that this new league might cut off the revolving door between NCAA and elite that has just started to open up with USAG. Essentially that there will be fewer elite come backs because of this option. Which I think underestimates the appeal of what elite offers. Maybe you get less Chellsie Memmel like elite comebacks but most people who are doing it have an Olympic goal in mind even if it isn't a terribly realistic one.

But in the end what worries me most if this was some kind of attempt to model the European leagues is that those leagues exist on a grass roots level. They're small and local. And I fear that an American who might have discovered those leagues would fail to understand that replicating a sustainable system like those can't be done from the top down.

I have other concerns too but these are the ones I'm willing to voice right now without an official announcement.

What I can tell you though is that it’ll be set about 9 months after the final chapter at the opening of the new season. There will be dancing, there will be fluff, there will be a lot of questions answered (like what exactly did happen to Simon’s career, and did Krissy spontaneously combust after Wille’s statement?).

So you see it’s all planned out, I just need to put it onto the page. Which is surprisingly hard because I think a part of me doesn’t want to have to let it go.
