The Passenger is a great movie and yeah, we all love it for the toxic yaoi angle, but as someone secretly obsessed with abandoned/decayed building photography and American small town desolation, the locations and almost near-abandonment of them really adds to the film. The whole angle of the film is people letting their lives pass them by due to a single moment that defines them for worse and how it rots and decays inside them, before realizing that they don't want that anymore, and the abandoned scenery really adds to it.
