Just imagining Max, whose only senses of male figure in her life have been either terrible or justâŚ. ripped from her, having Steve and Eddie by her side after the thing with Vecna. Eddie letting her move in with him, making his new trailer wheelchair accessible, and Steve getting a bunch of games and stuff with braille so she can be included on game nights.
Not only Steve and Eddie, but also the rest of the boys. Mike being like a brother to her, just talking and teasing her and treating her like normal. Lucas being Lucas bc we all need a Lucas. Dustin being Steve and Eddies other âkidâ means they would spend a lot of time together, so the two of them would bond. Will telling stories and coming out of his shell because he knows sheâs been through hell too. Just. All of them being good brother/father/general male figures in her life. PlsâŚ. She deserves it.

Dustin's a Damn Good Ally (Original) Pt. 6
Chapter 6â Scars and Black Sweatshirts

âââ
Eddie was taken aback at how accepting Dustin was.
It was clear he didnât care about sexualities, even if he was straight. That was metal as fuck in its own right, but even more interesting was how the kid seemed to have an innate sense of gaydar in him.
As good as if he was gay himself.
Either way, Eddie found himself having a movie night with Steve and his adopted siblings/children, fully able to kiss and hand-hold and love his boyfriend, without judgement from the other two in between them (aka the only reason Steve and Eddie werenât cuddling: the redhead on Eddieâs right, next to the brunet on Steveâs left)
Eddie had found himself a family full of love, and for fuckâs sake, he was happy.
The movie in question was the Breakfast Club, something everyone found comforting and sweet, and hopefully not inducing nightmares from trauma Eddie wasnât technically supposed to know about but forced all three to tell him after everyone had screaming nightmare after screaming nightmare.
Besides, Eddie thought it was similar to their dynamic: found family from all walks of life, not to mention is was secretly a personal favorite of his.
About an hour in, Dustin went to go get popcorn, but the movie was quickly stopped as Steve gently pushed him back down into his seat.
âŚok?
Eddie looked up in confusion as Max and Steve put on determined looks, and Dustinâs confused face quickly turned into a panicked one.
Eddie pretended not to see (or be hurt by) the way Dustin's fearful eyes kept going back and forth, mostly directed at him.
"Max, you know where the sweatshirt is, yeah?" She nodded and ran upstairs, while Steve ran into the kitchen, Eddie mentally agreeing to follow behind.
"Steve, whatâs going on? Is Dustin ok?" Steve gave a little huff, and started looking through cabinets.
"Babe, I love you, but itâs something Dustin needs to tell you. Not my place." Steve grinned as he spotted and swiped a large bottle of hydrogen peroxide. "Grab the paper towels on your way. Câmon." Eddie grabbed the roll, trailing behind like a lost puppy.
By now, Max had returned, and was helping a crying Dustin tie a black sweatshirt around his waist, and Eddie saw the dark red stain on the Harringtonâs pristine couch.
Oh.
That madeâŚso much sense.
Eddie remembered coming out to Wayne: the day after his middle school graduation, saying that he was Eddie, and thatâs who heâd be in high school.
How scared heâd been that someone who he trusted and loved could turn on him so easily, just for saying who he was.
How kind Wayne had been, saying Eddie was his boy, and how tightly they hugged afterwards.
Now, the roles were reversed: Wayneâs job now his.
So, Eddie did the best thing he could, and tore off his shirt.
Well, he didnât literally tear it off, but he threw it over his head so fast it was almost like tearing it.
Either way, it had exactly the effect intended, because the second Dustin caught sight of his bare chest, he gasped.
Under Eddieâs chest were two long, slightly mangled scars of the breast reduction surgery that had "gone too far."
News flash, it hadnât.
And the scars that reminded Eddie of what had once been now brought one of his favorite kids joy, because Eddie was just like him.
"Eddie?" Eddie grinned and nodded, and Dustin just crashed into him, into a hug.
"I thoughtâŚI thought youâd hate meâŚbeing gay is one thingâŚ" Eddie gently shushed him and pulled him in tighter.
"Donât worry kiddo, I could never hate you for being trans. Itâd be kinda hypocritical, no?" Dustin giggled in his arms. Eddie caught the wide grin from Steve and the approving smileâthe equivalent to Steveâs wide grinâfrom Max, and he smiled warmly.
Max snatched the paper towels from his hand, making it clear his job today was comfort, as she and Steve got to work on the stain.
Eddie stayed shirtless the rest of the night, pretending not to see the little glances Dustin gave the scars as the movie continued.
âââ
And that's a wrap!
A few bits that may be integrated later, idk: - Dustin knows Steve's safe because he got his first period at Steve's house (spring '85) - Eddie gives Dustin a few of his own black sweatshirts after the fact - Dustin (plus Nancy and Lucas) can sew, and he makes his own binders out of sports bras
Special thanks to a few of my friends who beta read (aka I just read this aloud to you at some point), especially "the Dipper to my Mabel" (I don't think they have an ao3/tumblr acct) and @octopiys.
Please PLEASE read the new version. Yes, it may have the same plotline, but I've added a bunch of fun details that give the story more character.

I love the âSteve has good parents, theyâre just not on camera.â
Mom edition
Dustin is crawling in through the window. He freezes halfway through the window when he makes eye contact with Steveâs mom.
âSweetie who is this small curly haired child breaking into our house?â
âThatâs Dustin.â
âOkay?â
âIâve adopted him as my brother.â
âHello new son?â
âŚ
Steveâs mom comes home to find Joyce on her couch, Steve talking very excitedly to her.
âWhatâs Joyce doing here?â
âHey mom, meet mom.â
âTwo moms and you still canât avoid getting concussed every year?â
âNeither of you are very good at your job.â
âŚ
âMom!â Steveâs mom turns at the voice and finds a small redhead looking at Steve.
âYes Max?â
âCan you take me to the arcade?â
Steve groans, pulling out some of the allowance that his mom had just given him and handed it to the little girl.
âLucas too?â
âYes, now scram.â
âMom?â Steveâs mom asks.
âIâm not sure how that happened either.â
âŚ
Eddie shows up on their doorstep with a bunch of half burnt cookies.
âIâm here for Steve.â He says simply to the bewildered mother staring at him.
âOkay.â She turns back towards the inside of the house. âSteve your boyfriend is here.â
âDid Steve tell you?â
âNo, but god does my boy have a type.â

I donât think anybody has ever explained the Upside Down to Steve so he came up with his own explanations for what happens and then spreads that misinformation around to the new members of The Party.
Like, turns out Eddie didnât die and Steveâs just like, âYeah, that happens. Will died and came back. HopperâŚDustinâs cat. Only seems to work with guys though. The girls never come back.â
Robin, who knows this too, âThe Upside Down is sexist.â
âYeah, exactly.â
#You know Dustin isnât explaining shit to Steve#Max and Erica are fairing a little better than Robin Eddie and Argyle bc of Lucas#Iâve made posts similiar to this but sometimes I start thinking about it again and it doesnât leave me until I write it down#steve harrington#stranger things

I was thinking it would be funny if during one of those hear me out cake videos a group of dudes pranked their homie and every single person put for every single hear me out, the dudes dad and now I canât stop thinking about it as the party
All: this is our hear me out cake
Lucas: hear me out *puts a picture of Sheila the Thief from the dungeons and dragons 80s cartoon*
Will: hear me out *puts a picture of Lucasâs dad*
Lucas: is that my dad??
Will: *shrugs*
Mike: Hear me out *puts a different picture of Lucasâs dad*
Lucas: what the hell guys
El: hear me out *puts a third picture of Lucasâs dad*
Lucas: what is wrong with you! Did you take that picture from my house?
Dustin: hear me out *places a fourth picture of Lucasâs dad*
Lucas: everyone stop putting my dad! *Sees itâs Maxâs turn next* max, max I swear to god if you put my father, we are breaking up, I will never forgive you
Max: Lucas donât be weird, Iâm not going to put your dad
Max: *sticks a picture of Lucasâs mom on the cake*
#I was plagued with this vision and you shall be too#also I thought it would be fun if Lucas put Sheila cause itâs a red head in a dnd party and his girlfriend is a red head in a dnd party so#it seemed fitting her would be down bad for her even if he didnât know it was a prank on him#stranger things#lucas sinclair#will byers#mike wheeler#dustin henderson#eleven hopper byers#max mayfield#lumax#something something Lucas has the best dad in stranger things so itâs only natural he would be the dad on the hear me out cake with a group#of kids with debilitating daddy issues

Robin might platonically marry Steve, though it's not the only reason, just so she can say dramatically in an argument:
"That's it! I'm divorcing you, and I'm taking everything!"
It's usually only said when they're playing monopoly. Steve would respond with:
"Fine! But I'm keeping your last name and the kids!"
"I never wanted them in the first place!" Robin shrieked.
"What a rude thing for our dad to say," Dustin said.
They were eating popcorn and watching the whole thing unfold before them.
"Well, it's not like we don't all have daddy issues," Max said. "Except for Lucas."
"What am I looking forward to with that? Any advice?" Lucas said.
"Don't date older men," Max said. "Especially ones who are old enough to actually be your father."
"You mean the same age as Robin?" Lucas asked.
"Yeah," Max said.
"Damn, there was this cute college guy - "
"Cheating whore!" Robin shrieked.
"And here it comes," Max grinned.
She hollered and flipped the table.
"Yeah, that's right, I cheated. Dustin isn't yours!" Steve yelled.
"I knew it!" Robin gasped.
"Okay, so when Dustin said that things get intense with Steve and Robin during Monopoly. . ." Nancy said, trailing off.
"Yeah, he wasn't kidding," Jonathan said.
Eddie was gaping with Jonathan, Nancy, Vickie, Chrissy, and Argyle while the kids watched from the sidelines.
"Who else isn't mine?! I bet it's both Mike and Dustin. They both could be Eddie's! Look at them!" Robin yelled.
"Babe, I swear, I didn't touch Steve," Eddie said to Chrissy.
"Okay, first off, Dustin and Mike are not actually Steveâs sons, and two, this is just a game," Chrissy said. "Also, Steve can't get pregnant."
"Oh no! Did the doctor say why?" Eddie asked with a gasp.
"Eddie? Did you smoke with Jonathan and Argyle without me?" Chrissy asked.
"Totally," Argyle said.
"The wedding rings were a nice touch," Nancy said.
"Oh, no, they actually got married. I was the witness!" Vickie exclaimed happily. "I got to kiss the bride!"
"What?!"
"We were at Steve's house when Steve's parents came home and immediately started ragging on Steve about what a disappointment he was, that they were his only family. . .blah, blah, blah. Anyway, Robin was like "not anymore" before dragging him out of the house. We went to a wedding chapel, and I watched as my girlfriend married her platonic soulmate," Vickie said. "It was a beautiful ceremony. Didn't you notice that Steve took her last name?"
"I thought he kept calling for Robin whenever someone said Harrington," Jonathan realized. "He was correcting them."
"Buckley!" Argyle laughed.
"Yeah!" Steve and Robin yelled, looking at them.
"Holy shit," Dustin muttered.
"Well, hey, we're no longer bastards," Max said. "Except Mike. There's no fixing that."

Rich CEO Steve, who married young and had children young and got widowed young. Who works really hard for his children's future, but who can't stand to be at home a lot because of all the memories of his late wife. Steve who's becoming more and more stranged from his children, from the kids he swore to always love, protect, cherish, care for.
Enter down on his luck singer Eddie, who came to the big city to make his dreams come true but has spent the last years singing in rundown bars, who sells drugs on the side to make ends meet. When his house literally gets burned down, he has to look for another job to pay rent and his debts. The classifieds are almost always a bummer, but this one... Well, he's always loved kids.
Max and Dustin and El who miss their dad so much, who just want him to spend a little time with them. And if they have to get rid of every single nanny their dad ever hires, then that's what they'll do.

Give me good at math Steve. Maybe heâs dyslexic and words never made sense and always swam away from him, but numbers? He can memorize formulas, he can recognize patterns.
I feel like it would add so much dimension to his character. I always like it in fic when they write Steve knowing a second language, or playing an instrument because I feel like the fandom has taken this idea that Steve is incompetent and ran with it. Heâs incredibly clever, and sarcastic (a sign of intelligence btw), and snarky. He thinks quickly, is it well thought out? Not always, but thatâs just his lack of self preservation skills. People can be smart and idiots at the same time, they can have their strengths and I wish that was portrayed more in fic and fandom.
So let him be good at math. Let him just be able to make sense of it. Show him tutoring El and assisting Lucas and Max when Mike and Dustin seem too condescending or intimidating or bitchy.
Heâll be bitchy too, but in an understanding way, because he knows what itâs like to struggle with something others find simple.
Also give us a scene where Mike or Dustin find out and flip their lids PLEASE

Dustin's a Damn Good Ally (Original) Pt. 2
Chapter 2â Twins and Poly-nailery
Ao3 Link
Originally Posted 1.1.23/Edited 9.1.23
Summary: Max has a lot of shit going on in her life
(Queer author saying queer is used both positive and negative here)
âââ
Dustin met Mad Max when she moved to Hawkins in 8th grade. Why her parents (or mom and stepdad) chose to move from fancy California to bum-fuck-nowhere Indiana beat him, but alas, they had, and it had brought Dustin one of his best, closest friends.
Originally, Dustin believed he had a crush on her. Soon, he realized that feeling of jealousy, of passion to prove himself, and burning loveâŚwasnât exactly romantic. It was 100% familial, and after the Snow Ball fiasco and the second (and hopefully last) edition of traumatic bullshit that was the Upside Down, Dustin, Max, and Steve became a little unit of melancholy daddy issue holders.
So, Max and Dustin got really damn close. Close enough that Dustin started to learn her quirks and mannerisms, how to tell if she was nervous or excited, and how to tell if she liked you or if she was just flat-out annoyed.
In the summer of 1985, Dustin noticed her becoming closer with El, and close in a way Max had only been before she started dating Lucas.
So that was something.
More and more, on his off time from dealing with the Russians and contacting Suzie, heâd see the two together, easily brush off-able as besties or bffs, but Dustin knew Max better than that.
So he did his research, because he wanted to support his sister as much as possible. Even if she didnât know what she was feeling, he wanted to make sure she knew he loved her for it.
In 1976, David Bowie came out as bisexual.
Perfect.
Bisexuality meant she could like both Lucas and El, boys and girls.
However, that was a long shot. Maybe Max was completely over Lucas, or maybe she wanted to try something new, or maybe she didnât even catch how her feelings were absolutely more than platonic.
So, all Dustin had to do was confront her about it, orâŚconfront really wasnât the right word, it made it all seem threatening and angry; Max already got enough of that in her life.
He wasâŚtalkingâŚto her about it.
Talking worked!
Yeah.
Dustin had no idea what would happen with Billy, though.
He couldnât predict the grief that would strike her for weeks, making her unattainable. He could understand, though, and knew to give her space. A sexuality crisis could wait until after a grief one.
It was well into September, now, a few weeks after their first day of high school, when Dustin and Max found themselves alone (or, semi-alone, Steve was downstairs in the kitchen) in Maxâs new designated bedroom in the Harrington mansion.
Dustin was jealous as hell for that, side note. He knew the reason why she got it, and knew it wasnât a great reason by any means, but he was still mad as hell Max now got to live with Steve and he didnât. (Though heâd spend enough time there in the next few weeks for it to become their room, but he didnât know that yet).
Dustin knew this was probably a good time to bring up the conversation heâd been putting off for about a month and a half, now, when the two of them were calm, sitting on Maxâs big comfy bed. They were listening to music from an old record player, Max painting his nails a pretty purple (Eddie, the new DM at school, wore nail polish, and it was so cool).
"Hey, Max, I have a question." She looked up from his hands, eyebrows raised, and made questioning 'hmm' sound. "YouâŚyou know itâs ok if you like, girls, right?" He saw the panic immediately form on her face, "I donât judge you, love is loveâŚI think the saying is. Not sure." She blinked.
"IâmâIâm not gay!" So she didnât know what bisexual meant, ok. Dustin could work with that!
"You can like guys and girls, Max. Iâve seen the way you look at Lucas and El, and itâs the same," Maxâs cheeks flushed red, and her freaked gaze started to soften.
"You canâŚdo that?" Dustin nodded, smiling slightly.
"David Bowieâs bisexual, so yeah, I think you can." Max blinked again, brow furrowing.
"Bisexual?"
"Bi, two, sexual, sexually attracted to." Dustin shrugged, "Thatâs the word he used to describe it, anyway." Max slowly closed the polish bottle, curling her knees to her chest in front of Dustin.
"I was so confused, I thought there was something wrong with me!" Dustin grinned.
"Thereâs nothing wrong with you, Max,"
"I like Lucas, and I knew I liked El, but I didnât know if that meant if I was gay orâŚwell, I guess you can see how that turned out, huh." They both laughed, but Dustin paused.
"You still like Lucas?" Max nodded.
"Yeah, uh, itâs weird butâŚI like them both? And I donât want to have to choose, because theyâre both amazingâ"
"Polyamory." Max froze, eyes wide, jaw slightly dropped, "You have two hands, Max." Dustin grinned, slightly maliciously.
"Is thatâŚthereâs a term for feeling like that?" Dustin shrugged.
"I think thatâs it. My mom taught it to me on the way back from camp, something about Suzie and Mormons and standards," He waved his hand, disregarding the topic, "Dunno. Either way, I think you should love whoever the fuck you want, and if itâs Lucas and El?" He shrugged nonchalantly. "Just donât do it in the bed, man. Iâm not sleeping over again if you do!" Max made a disgusted sound, and the two of them laughed.
"Iâd hug you right now if your hands werenât still drying, asshole," Dustin snickered, then his eyes widened.
"Also? Steveâs safe. Canât really explain why, butâŚhe wonât judge. He may be a little confused, though." Max nodded. "Wanted you to know since youâre staying here, now."
"Thanks," Dustin grinned.
"Anytime, sis."
âââ
Your honor, these are twins. No, I will not defend myself: this is a fact.
I've seen so many "Dustin is Steve's child" and "Max is Steve's child" to which I say "they are the trio of melancholy daddy issue holders and they are all siblings and Claudia is their Ma.

Steveâs parents running into Steve and Eddie with a gaggle of children.
Theyâre hanging off of both adults, calling them mom and dad.
âSteve, whatâs going on here?â Richard Harrington asks.
âCo-parenting.â Steve replies in a deadpan tone. Max is actively pickpocketing him and Dustin is tugging on his jacket trying to get Steveâs attention, a never ending chorus of âMom, come lookâ leaving his mouth.
âNah, at this point weâre just parenting.â Eddie corrects, fending off a grabby El trying to play with his wallet chain.
Eddie scoops up Steveâs wallet when Max tries to make her escape. She groans out a frustrated âDadâ before retreating back to Lucas and Mike, who are hiding around the corner, poorly.
âRichard, I think this is the reason we only had one.â Martha Harrington stated blankly, wide eyed taking in the scene in front of her.
Robin nods from where she sits at an adjacent table, trying and mildly failing to braid Willâs short hair. Will sits perfectly still and disciplined as Robin works. A complete contrast to the wild children that Steve and Eddie are actively managing.
âI picked the best one.â Robin smiles condescendingly at Steve and Eddie, patting Willâs head.

Having thoughts of The Party being touchy as all fuck after everything.
Like you cannot enter nor leave any kind of hang out without a hug, high-five, pat, or anything from everyone you were hanging out with.
And then, suddenly, you arenât able to leave without a kiss or hug of some kind from Steve.
It started after the bullshit that was the Starcourt Mall. The kids were leaving Steveâs house from a DnD session maybe 2 months before the Byers left for Cali.
Dustin was taking forever to pull his shoes on and get out the house to his moms car and everyone was complaining. It was one of those rare times where Steve wasnât the one carting them all aroundâ they all had their own rides.
Dustin got his shoes on and Steve handed him his bag andâ without thinkingâ pressed a kiss to the top of his hat before waving him out the door.
The rest of the kids are silent until Mike speaks up bitchily âwhat about us, asshole?â
Steve has no idea what they mean until El points to her head with a grin. Steve deals out head and forehead kisses for everyone and waves them off to their respective rides.
And then it justâ sticks. At first itâs with just the kids whenever he sees them. Heâll usually greet them with a hug or an exasperated sigh and then say goodbye with a kiss to their foreheads.
Not even Mike complains. This is the kind of shit he never got while growing upâ might as well make the best of it.
And then it migrates to Robin as well, and the Nancy is joining in on the hugs (theyâre still too awkward for the kisses but the hugs are enough for now).
And Steve never holds back, not even in public. Again, no one complains.
And thatâs how Hellfire finds out about the kissing arrangement (that might be the title of this if I make it an actual fic). They watch as Steve presses a forehead kiss to Mike, Lucas, and Dustin before waving them off and then presses a kiss to Maxâs head and giving her a tight hug.
The guys try to make fun of the kids for it but none of them are embarrassed.
âItâs Steve, dude. Heâs like a mom.â
âThe kisses are actually really comforting.â
âItâs a Party thing.â
And then the fuckery of 1986 and Vecna happens and suddenly Eddieâs in on the hugs and pats and high-fives.
And then.
And then.
Heâs in on the kisses.
Steve doles out the kisses like usual one night after Hellfire and gives one to everyoneâ including Eddie.
And Eddie panics and gives Steve one right back.
And then the kids are going feral about wanting to give Steve a kiss too.
And Eddie leaves during the chaos.
And then they donât talk about it.
Until Steve and Eddie do it again.
And the kids accept is as the new normal; you have to give Steve a kiss back.
And then Steve and Eddie have an excuse to kiss each other on the foreheads and cheeks and noses.
One night theyâre hanging out, just the two of them at the trailer after Wayne left for work.
Steve had greeted Eddie with a tight hug the moment heâd gotten in the trailer. Eddie had squeezed back just as tight if not tighter.
Steve was getting ready to leave, and on instinct leant in to kiss Eddie, but Eddie was also leaning in to kiss Steve. So they meet in the middle and accidentally kiss on the lips.
And then the new normal for Steve and Eddie is kissing on the lips goodbye.
Idk, just Steve being a very touchy feely person makes me so happy

Operation âFix Eddieâs Screw-Upâ
Summary: A year ago, Eddie Munson made a mistake heâs regretted ever since. When you walk into the video store where he works with Robin and Steve, old wounds resurface, and Eddieâs left grappling with the past. It doesnât take long for Steve, Robin, and the kids to noticeâand they decide to take matters into their own hands to fix things.
Pairing: Eddie Munson x Reader
Warnings: Angst, fluff
Authorâs note: Good morning guys, I felt like Tumblr was lacking on some good old angst and fluff stories of him without any smut. This one is kinda long.
Eddie Munsonâs job at Family Video wasnât glamorous, but it was steady. After everything with the Upside Down, normalcy was a welcome relief. The place was rarely busy, which left plenty of time for him, Steve, and Robin to mess around behind the counter and argue over who was more tolerable to customers.
âCome on, Stevie,â Eddie said one slow Thursday afternoon, lazily spinning a VHS tape between his fingers. âDonât act like you donât love when middle-aged moms ask you to recommend a rom-com.â
âBetter than you scaring them off with your metalhead charm,â Steve shot back.
Robin snorted from the counter. âPlease, youâre both terrible. Iâm the only one holding this place together.â
The three of them fell into easy banter, their laughter echoing through the empty store. Eddie had just started recounting a ridiculous D&D campaign heâd run when the bell above the door jingled.
âWelcome to Family Video!â Robin chirped without looking up from her inventory list.
Eddie, however, froze. His voice caught in his throat, his grip tightening on the tape in his hands. He didnât need to turn around to know it was you. Heâd recognize your presence anywhere.
A year. It had been a whole year since the last time heâd seen youâsince the night heâd screwed everything up.
You didnât even glance his way as you walked toward the shelves, your focus entirely on the rows of tapes. Your hair, your stance, the way you movedâit all hit him like a freight train, dragging memories to the surface that heâd tried so hard to bury.
âUh, Eddie?â Steve nudged him, eyebrows raised. âYou good, man?â
âYeah,â Eddie mumbled, though his voice was tight. He forced himself to turn away, but he couldnât stop glancing at you out of the corner of his eye.
When you finally approached the counter with your rental, you placed it down without a word.
Robin, picking up on the tension, stepped forward to help. âOh, this oneâs good! Classic rom-comââ
âJust the tape, please,â you said curtly, cutting her off. Your voice wasnât sharp, but it wasnât warm, either.
Eddie didnât dare speak. He kept his hands busy with the register, avoiding eye contact. When you paid and took your receipt, you turned on your heel and left without so much as a glance back.
The bell jingled again as the door closed behind you.
Eddieâs eyes, however, stayed fixed on the door long after you were gone.
It didnât take long for Steve and Robin to notice.
âOkay, spill,â Robin said, crossing her arms and leaning against the counter. âWhat was that?â
âYeah, dude,â Steve added. âYou looked like youâd seen a ghost.â
Eddie sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. He could feel their eyes boring into him, and he knew there was no getting out of this.
âThat was her,â he said finally, his voice low.
âHer who?â Robin asked.
âThe girl,â Eddie clarified. âThe one I told you about. The one IâŚâ He trailed off, the words catching in his throat.
âThe one you majorly screwed over last year?â Robin guessed, her eyebrows shooting up.
Eddie winced. âYeah, that one.â
Steve and Robin exchanged a look, and Eddie groaned.
âDonât start, okay? I already know Iâm an idiot. Iâve known for a year.â
Robin leaned forward, her expression curious. âOkay, but what exactly happened? Youâve never given us the full story.â
Eddie hesitated. It wasnât something he liked to talk about, but he knew they werenât going to let it go.
âShe and I were⌠close,â he admitted. âReally close. She came to Hellfire sometimes, weâd hang out after schoolâshe even helped me set up a few campaigns. But then, right before graduation, I panicked.â
âPanicked about what?â Steve asked, genuinely curious.
âAbout her,â Eddie said, his voice bitter. âShe was everything I wasnât. Smart, grounded, going places. And me? I was just the town freak. I thought if I pushed her away, itâd be easier for both of us. So I said some⌠things.â
Robin frowned. âLike what?â
âLike how I didnât care about her the way she thought I did,â Eddie said quietly. âThat she deserved better than some loser like me. It wasnât true, but⌠I said it anyway.â
âDude,â Steve muttered, shaking his head.
Eddie shrugged helplessly. âI thought I was doing the right thing, okay? But I messed everything up. She hasnât spoken to me since, and I donât blame her.â
Robin and Steve shared a look that could only be described as scheming.
âYou know,â Robin said slowly, âthis feels like the kind of thing we could fix.â
âDefinitely,â Steve agreed. âI mean, itâs basically a rom-com setup. Guy screws up, realizes heâs an idiot, wins girl back with grand gesture.â
Eddie groaned. âNo, no, no. Absolutely not. I donât need you two meddling in my love life.â
âToo late,â Robin said with a grin. âOperation âFix Eddieâs Screw-Upâ is officially a go.â
It didnât take long for the rest of the gang to get involved.
When Dustin heard the story, he was immediately on board. âEddie, you idiot,â he said, smacking him on the shoulder. âYouâve been pining over her for a year and didnât tell me? I couldâve fixed this ages ago!â
âI donât need fixing,â Eddie muttered.
âClearly, you do,â Max said, rolling her eyes. âYouâre hopeless.â
Even Lucas, Mike, and Will had ideas, though most of them were wildly impractical. (âWrite her a song,â Mike suggested. âGirls love that stuff.â âSheâll just think itâs cheesy,â Lucas argued.)
Through it all, Eddie tried to protest, but deep down, a part of him hoped they could pull it off.
The plan came together piece by piece, each member of the group contributing ideas that were somehow both chaotic and oddly brilliant.
âWhat about a mixtape?â Dustin suggested as he sprawled across Steveâs couch.
âA mixtape screams â80s romance,â Robin said, nodding. âBut it needs to be personal. Like, songs that mean something to you and her.â
Eddie groaned, running a hand through his hair. âYou guys donât get it. She doesnât even want to look at me, let alone listen to some cheesy mixtape.â
âThen donât make it just about the tape,â Max said from her spot on the floor. âMake it part of something bigger.â
âAnd whereâs this âbiggerâ happening?â Steve asked, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.
The group fell silent, all eyes turning to Eddie. He frowned, tapping his fingers against his knee. Then it hit himâan idea so crazy it might actually work.
âThe Hawkins Carnival,â he said.
âWhat about it?â Dustin asked.
âTheyâre setting it up this weekend, right? She used to love going to that thing. Weâd sneak off after school and blow all our money on funnel cakes and rides.â His voice softened as the memories flooded back. âMaybe⌠maybe I could meet her there.â
âOkay, but whatâs the actual plan?â Robin pressed. âYou canât just show up and expect her to swoon over you.â
âYeah,â Steve added. âYou need a moment. Something big. Something unforgettable.â
Eddie thought for a moment, then smirked. âIâve got just the thing.â
The days leading up to the carnival were a whirlwind of preparation. Dustin helped Eddie pick out songs for the mixtape, while Robin and Steve coached him on what to say.
âApologize first,â Steve advised. âDonât try to justify what you didâjust own up to it.â
âAnd be sincere,â Robin added. âNo sarcasm, no jokes. This isnât the time for your usual deflection.â
Eddie rolled his eyes but took their advice to heart.
Meanwhile, the kids worked on the logistics of his grand gesture. Lucas and Max snuck into the carnival grounds to scope out the perfect location, while Will and Mike brainstormed backup plans in case things went south.
By the time Saturday rolled around, Eddie was a bundle of nerves. The mixtape was finished, his speech was rehearsed, and the stage was set. All that was left was for you to show up.
The Hawkins Carnival was alive with lights and laughter, the scent of fried food wafting through the air. Eddie stood near the Ferris wheel, his heart pounding as he scanned the crowd.
âYouâve got this,â Dustin said, clapping him on the shoulder. âJust stick to the plan.â
Eddie nodded, though his palms were sweating.
Then he saw you.
You were standing by the carousel, looking effortlessly beautiful in the glow of the carnival lights. The sight of you took his breath away, and for a moment, he almost lost his nerve. But then he remembered why he was hereâwhy heâd spent the past year kicking himself for letting you go.
He squared his shoulders and approached you, his heart racing.
âHey,â he said softly, his voice barely audible over the noise of the carnival.
You turned, your eyes widening in surprise. âEddie?â
âCan we talk?â he asked, his voice pleading.
You hesitated, your expression guarded. But after a moment, you nodded. âFine.â
Eddie led you to a quieter spot near the edge of the carnival, away from the crowds. He fumbled in his pocket and pulled out the mixtape, holding it out to you.
âWhatâs this?â you asked, eyeing it warily.
âItâs⌠an apology,â he said. âAnd a thank-you. And a promise to do better if youâll let me.â
You stared at him, your fingers brushing the edge of the tape but not taking it. âWhy now, Eddie? Why after all this time?â
âBecause Iâve been an idiot,â he admitted. âI thought I was doing you a favor by pushing you away. I told myself you deserved better, but the truth is, I was scared. Scared of how much I cared about you. Scared of screwing it up.â
He took a deep breath, his hands trembling. âBut I did screw it up. And I hate myself for that. I just⌠I needed you to know that Iâm sorry. And that I never stoppedâŚâ
âNever stopped what?â you prompted, your voice soft.
âNever stopped loving you,â he said, the words tumbling out before he could stop them.
For a moment, there was only silence. Then you spoke, your voice barely above a whisper.
âYou really hurt me, Eddie.â
âI know,â he said, his voice breaking. âAnd Iâll spend the rest of my life making it up to you if youâll let me.â
You stared at him for what felt like an eternity, and Eddie braced himself for the worst. But then, slowly, you reached for the tape, your fingers curling around it.
âIâll listen to it,â you said softly.
Eddieâs heart soared. âThatâs all Iâm asking.â
But the night wasnât over yet.
As you turned to leave, the Ferris wheel lit up behind you, the carnival music swelling in the background. Eddie hesitated, then called out.
âWait!â
You turned back, your brow furrowed.
âWill you ride the Ferris wheel with me?â he asked, his voice trembling. âOne last time?â
Your lips curved into a small smile, and for the first time in a year, Eddie felt hope.
âOkay,â you said.
As the two of you climbed into the Ferris wheel carriage, the world below seemed to fade away. The lights, the noise, the crowdsâit all disappeared, leaving just the two of you suspended in the night sky.
And as the Ferris wheel reached its peak, Eddie turned to you, his eyes searching yours.
âI meant what I said,â he whispered. âI love you. I never stopped.â
This time, you didnât hesitate. You leaned in, closing the distance between you, and kissed him.
The world tilted, the stars spinning above, but Eddie didnât care. For the first time in a year, everything felt right.
The Ferris wheel creaked softly as it came to a stop, grounding you and Eddie back in the bustle of the carnival. But neither of you moved to get out of the carriage right away. Instead, you stayed seated, your hands still intertwined, your heads leaning close together.
âYou know,â you said, breaking the silence, âif you mess this up again, Iâm never speaking to you.â
Eddie let out a breathless laugh, his thumb brushing against the back of your hand. âFair enough. But I wonât. Youâve got my word.â
You tilted your head, studying him for a moment. His dark eyes, once filled with nervous energy, now held something softer. Something earnest. You gave his hand a small squeeze.
âIâll hold you to that, Munson.â
The Ferris wheel operator coughed awkwardly from below, snapping you both out of the moment. âUh, you getting out or planning to rent the thing for the night?â
Eddie grinned and hopped out, offering you his hand to help you down. The two of you wandered back into the glowing chaos of the carnival, your shoulders brushing with every step.
The next morning, the story of your reunion had spread faster than Eddie anticipated.
When he walked into Family Video for his shift, Steve was already smirking behind the counter, Robin perched on top of it with a knowing grin. Dustin, Mike, and Lucas had apparently stopped by, too, judging by the excited chatter echoing through the store.
âLook whoâs finally not single!â Robin announced loudly as Eddie stepped inside.
Steve threw an arm around Eddieâs shoulders, ruffling his hair. âHow does it feel, Romeo?â
âLike I shouldâve kept my mouth shut about all this,â Eddie muttered, though he couldnât keep the grin off his face.
âCâmon, man, donât be shy,â Dustin said, grinning ear to ear. âWe did help, after all. You should be thanking us.â
âOh, thank you, wise sages of Hawkins,â Eddie said, bowing dramatically. âI couldnât have done it without your meddling.â
Robin snorted. âDamn right.â
Later that week, you stopped by Family Video, much to the delight of the gang.
âLook who it is!â Robin sang as you walked in, nudging Eddie.
You shot her a mock glare before turning your attention to Eddie, who had abandoned all pretense of professionalism to lean against the counter with a wide grin.
âHi,â you said, a little shyly.
âHi,â he replied, his tone soft and warm.
Robin and Steve exchanged a glance, then bolted for the back room, dragging Dustin and the others with them.
âHey, we werenât done!â Dustin protested, but Robin slammed the door shut behind them, leaving you and Eddie alone.
Eddie leaned closer. âThey mean well, but theyâre the absolute worst, I swear.â
You laughed, shaking your head. âTheyâre not so bad. I think I owe them, actually.â
âFor what?â
âFor convincing me to give you another chance.â
Eddieâs smile faltered slightly. âDo I⌠deserve another chance?â
You reached across the counter, taking his hand. âYouâre earning it. And so far, youâre doing a pretty good job.â
The weight that had been pressing on Eddieâs chest for a year seemed to lift entirely. He grinned, his fingers curling around yours.
âWell, then,â he said, his voice playful but sincere. âI guess Iâd better keep it up, huh?â
You smirked. âYouâd better.â
As you left the store, mixtape in hand, Eddie watched you go with a goofy grin on his face. Steve emerged from the back room just in time to catch him staring.
âStill gazing after her like a lovesick puppy?â Steve teased.
âAbsolutely,â Eddie said without shame.
Robin grinned as she joined them. âWell, looks like Operation âFix Eddieâs Screw-Upâ was a success.â
âDonât ever call it that again,â Eddie groaned, though his smile didnât waver.
And as the group broke into laughter, Eddie realized something: he wasnât just grateful to have you back in his life. He was grateful for all of itâthe chaos, the meddling, the friends who refused to let him give up on love.
Because this? This was a second chance he wasnât going to waste.
The End.
