Something’s Shifted (Pt 3)
more chaos, more shenanigans
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 /
First Meeting
Chapter 3: Hold me closer, tiny Dani
Some drinks, a few well-timed jokes, the odd embarrassing childhood story from Lilah's parents and the whole affair would be over in a couple of hours, with Dani smugly telling Lilah on the drive home that, 'See? There was nothing to worry about'.
That's how she'd anticipated the day going, how it should have gone.
Potentially, there could be the occasional awkward pause or dicey question, but Dani wasn’t too phased by that, she never really got tongue tied. She'd expected to be pulled aside at some point by a parent or sibling who'd want to gauge 'her intentions' with Lilah, and that was fine too, if old fashioned.
Initially, Lilah's trepidation leading up to the day made Dani wonder if her parents didn't know that she was in a relationship, and a relationship with a girl at that, but she quickly dismissed the possibility. Throughout their relationship, Lilah had spoken openly about previous partners 'back home' of a plethora of backgrounds and identities. It didn't seem like something she was keeping a secret from anyone.
Turns out, Dani wasn't the secret Lilah was trying to keep, she was the one Lilah was keeping the secret from. And it was a big secret. A really big secret.
If Dani thought about it, really, she didn't think that secrets could ever get that big. Everything she knew about the world and how it worked told her that they didn't. Yet, there it was, a secret that loomed over her, with a playful grin and eyebrows raised expectantly. And now she had to have lunch with that secret and her family of equally large secrets.
Before that though, she had to get through the door, which was proving more difficult than one would initially expect.
"No!" Dani said, voice pitched higher than she would have liked, unable to mask her incredulity. "Absolutely not. No fucking way."
Having her feet secure on the ground was one of the few feelings of control she had left and she wasn't obsessed with the idea of giving it up - let alone how she would be giving it up. Each new revelation was pushing her further and further towards the edge of a complete episode, nudging and nuzzling at her limit like a kitten purring against an atomic bomb.
Delilah spread her hands in a rolling shrug, her lips pursed to one side.
"Well, babe," She said, and Dani's gaze followed as her arm extended, towering high above her, pointing at the absurdly large door to the absurdly large house. She could only she the top half of it as the steps and the veranda blocked the rest from view. "That's the way in." Lilah continued. "And I really appreciate the fact that you're even willing to keep going with this, but if you still are, that's the only option."
Again, Dani looked up at Lilah who returned the stare. Everything was so familiar and yet so uncanny - the feeling drained the blood from her veins and replaced it with slurry, leaving her arms and legs numb and weighted.
The image of returning alone to the safety of the Carola and driving away, leaving all of this a shrinking memory in her review, flirted with her and it was so tempting that she almost started walking back the way they'd come (though she'd need to go below or around Lilah in order to do it). However, a stubborn pride in her, which she'd never seen as a critical flaw until that moment, would make sure that if she backed out then it'd haunt her for the rest of her life.
'What good is your word if you turn back on it the moment things get a little uncomfortable?' It said. 'Don't you want to see what happens?'
She thought it was a vast simplification of the situation, but it was also the voice in her own head, so there wasn't much room for debate. She knew herself, she knew that going back to the Carola at this point was nothing more than a desperate fantasy, and she sighed as the resolution set like cement in her brain. It was decided.
But then there was Lilah.
Even though the other girl was silent, Dani noticed the puckish glint her eye and the way the edges of her mouth would twitch before she'd consciously suppress it.
Dani didn't like it.
"Well," She said, a little hopelessly. "It'd be a little easier if you weren't so excited about it!"
 ***
That did it.
Lilah had been trying her best to stay contained. However, the sound of Dani, usually calm and level headed, now nervous and bewildered at the impossible scenario she found herself in was enough to send Lilah over the edge. And she laughed.
It came out of her before she could even try to stop it. The sight of her girlfriend, flustered under her gaze, wide-eyed and looking for an alternative and realising that there wasn't one was too much. Dani, the problem solver, unable to solve the problem. It was sweet.
Lilah was still recovering from the relief that Dani hadn't bolted and was, to the best of her efforts, trying to muscle through. The quick beating of her heart and tingling sensation in her hands and face had left her giddy. All the anxiety that had been building over the last few weeks had finally been released and the freedom left her in a kind of happy stupor.
But the laughter made Dani jump and shrink back.
Lilah covered her mouth with her hands.
Calm down.
"I'm sorry." She said, shaking her head, grateful that her hands were hiding the stupefied grin that was returning to her lips.
Dani frowned, cheeks red. "You don't seem that sorry? This isn't funny, Lilah!"
Lilah took a few deep breaths and it seemed to settle her heart and she sobered.
"I know, Dani." She said. "I really am sorry, I just never even thought we'd make it this far."
"Well, we might not make it much further if you keep laughing at me." Dani said, defensively crossing her arms.
Lilah just nodded and they were silent. She left Dani to think.
"So," She dared to venture after a while. "Have you decided?"
She watched as Dani's shoulder's sank and the other girl shook her head - less in answer and more in disbelief.
"I guess," She said with an exasperated sigh. Her fingers pinched the bridge of her nose. "Ok. Fine, I'll do it."
Again, surprise washed over Lilah - she'd been expecting Dani to wave the white flag and tap out right then.
"Wait - really?" She said and Dani just nodded, seemingly in equal disbelief.
"Yes." Dani said, a little quieter. Then she pushed out her left hand, like she were trying to maintain some distance, knowing it would eventually have to close. "Just - please - take it slow."
 ***
She heard herself say it and felt her brain agree with it, but apparently her body hadn't received the memo, because when Lilah nodded and began to kneel in front of her, she stumbled back a few steps.
She watched in renewed horror as Lilah's hand, length the same as her entire body, descended to lie flat on the ground in front of her, a couple of meters away.
Oh, I'm definitely going to die.
She looked at the hand. It was one she knew, one that had, not too long ago, fit in her own. The thought seemed unfathomable now. Each of her fingers was covered in an eclectic collection of rings - some that Dani herself had bought for her, some were Dani's that Lilah stole. She could see every crease, every ridge and vein, and while Lilah was doing her best to stay still, every now and then a finger would twitch and send Dani's heart straight into her throat.
This is so fucked.
She started to count to ten.
 ***
"I know how you're feeling." Lilah said as she watched Dani.
She did. Throughout her childhood, while learning to control her abilities, she'd been handled by her friends and family - sometimes it went well, sometimes it very much didn’t. All that experience meant that she was sure she would know the best way to do it.
"It's really scary the first few times, but after that, you won't even think twice about it."
That wasn't entirely true. It had taken more than a couple of times to become comfortable with relinquishing all control to someone so much bigger, and even now, she would only let people she trusted unconditionally do it. However, she knew what Dani would want to hear in that moment. She just hoped that Dani trusted her enough to take the plunge.
Dani, for her part, just stared at Lilah's hand lying on the ground in front of her, her eyes were glazed over and her expression was blank. Lilah couldn't read her so she just waited. The longer the time passed, the more she started to panic.
This is it.
Then Dani took a step forward, then another, and when she got to Lilah's palm, she steeled herself before taking her first step onto it.
Lilah inhaled sharply. It struck her how light Dani felt in her hand. She watched as her girlfriend made her way to the centre of her palm and awkwardly sat down in a cross-legged position. She'd opted to face with her back to Lilah which was probably a good decision for the both of them. Unbeknownst to Dani, Lilah stared down at her, frozen. Suddenly, Dani's fragility hit her. Even the slightest mistake on her part could prove catastrophic for her girlfriend.
This is a terrible idea.
She couldn't bring herself to move her hand.
"Ok," Dani said, refusing to turn back. Her voice wavered but she seemed to swallow it down. "I'm ready."
Lilah felt Dani place two bracing hands down beside her on her palm, ready for movement.
It didn't come.
Lilah had thought about this moment a million times throughout their relationship and she'd always been sure that it would be easy. She knew exactly what she'd do to make sure it was safe and secure for Dani. However, there was a difference between theory and practice, and any sense of relief she'd felt before fled and her old anxiety returned.
"I'm suddenly not so sure about this." She said at last.
Dani whipped her head around, her bright curls bouncing with the movement. "What?"
From this angle, her girlfriend staring up at her from her palm, she felt massive and dangerous.
"I've never done this before." She confessed, nerves sending a twitch through her arm.
She hadn't. She'd been on Dani's side of things a number of times and had always assumed that it would be better being the one carrying than the one being carried. However, now that she finally had an actual person in her palm, she wasn't sure if that was true.
Dani's face paled and her eyes went so wide Lilah thought they'd bug out of her head.
"What?"
"I don't know!" Lilah replied. "I thought it'd be easy!"
"Oh my god, Lilah," Dani said, there was a slight grit underlying her tone as her pitch rose. "Just do it, before I lose my fucking mind. I can't deal with the waiting anymore."
"You sure? I'm not so -"
"- Yes." Dani was firm. "You'll be fine. Just take it slow and be gentle, and everything will be ok."
Dani continued to talk, doing her best to be encouraging and calming while clearly suppressing her own panic, and after a while Lilah began to feel control return to her arm and palm. Slowly, she lifted her hand off the ground and when she did, Dani's voice cut out and the smaller girl went stiff in her palm. Lilah continued to breathe deeply. She started to stand and soon she stood at full height. She brought her carrying hand to her chest and raised her free hand to cover the exposed side - not enough to block Dani's view, which she knew she would hate, but just enough to form some kind of pseudo-barrier.
Everything will be ok.
 ***
Everything was not ok.
Dani watched as the ground grew distant below her as she was surrounded on all sides by her girlfriend. The fact that this was Lilah's first time doing this did nothing to settle her nerves.
A guinea pig in more ways than one.
Behind her, she could feel the thundering of Lilah's heart, the rise and fall of her chest, and her breath rhythmically blowing over her back. While rigid beneath her, Lilah's hand was hardly a safe vehicle for the altitude and Dani just hoped it'd be over soon.
'Whatever happens.' Mocked the voice in her head.
Above her, Lilah began to speak and Dani shuddered. At this distance, it was louder than ever, and Dani didn't dare turn again, keeping her eyes fixed on the path ahead.
"I'm going to start walking, ok?" Dani just nodded. She'd left her voice way down on the ground below.
Her heart lurched as the entire world shifted with each passing step, covering an impossible distance in a matter of moments. Dani's head swam with the vertigo and she swallowed down the bile building in her throat, staring into the distance to keep her steady.
However, in doing so, she looked at the door and was reminded of what lay beyond.
This was the easy bit, she'd hadn't even passed through the threshold yet.
Fuck.

Yooo Dani
I have a list of things to tell you
I just walked into my bathroom and there were loads of nails on the floor 🤮 like whyyyy
I did a bad thing…
I killed off Rafael’s wife the day after their son was born and she was so beautiful but his storyline wasn’t problematic enough for me with all the dramatic shit in his love life nope I had to kill his wife too
But it’s okay now he’s dating a super cute werewolf called Alfie and they dated when they were teenagers and he really helped him thru daisy’s death and dw these guys actually communicate so they TALKED about how their relationship would work (with help from malec and nosy 14 yr old sisters 😂)
So I’m half way through A Game Of Thrones and these are my thoughts:
THEY KILLED JORY WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY DO THAT
then oooh the next chapter is Dany’s perspective this gonna be interesting
Skipping back a bit - lysa ur a weirdass woman what going on in ur crazy little brain lady ur son is 6 not 2
BRAN MY BABY YES GOOOO I’m liking you more and more and ROBB YES PROTECTIVE BIG BROTHER MODE IM LIKING THIS THANK YOU - Theon? Hmm?? I don’t like this dude… he’s questionable
Tyrion is some smart arse dude like I love his comebacks they’re so funny like dude no he didn’t try and kill bran why would?? The only thing I don’t like abt him is his loyalty to his family cos Cersei is weird as hell and Jaime killed jory
Also me questioning how good of a king Rheagar might have been… was Aerys really as bad as they made him out to be??
Why does Ser Jorah hate Ned?? I love ned!! Ned deserves love!!!
Also I put on my WhatsApp status
‘why would anyone kill jory’
and my best friend said
‘I know’
and I was like you don’t even know what I’m going on about
and he’s like ‘I killed him’
and I’m like nooo you didn’t and then I realise
My best friend is called jaime 😭😭😭
For some reason having a dog means that you end up talking to a bunch of strange men in the park like the other day I was just leaving when my dog starts trying to play with these two older dogs and their owner is like 60 and starts telling me about where he lives and how one of the dogs is his daughters dog but we’re LEAVING IN THE SAME DIRECTION
And my house is super close to the park so we’re walking down my street still having this conversation and obviously I have to go into my house and he doesn’t seem too creepy so he KNOWS WHERE I LIVE 😭😭😭
Anyway somehow you’ve become my journal for some reason 😂 but yaaas, take care of yourself
A picture of my puppy in the snow 😭😭
Tumblr media
First of all, I am a better journal than Bruce ;)
AND YOUR DOG IS SO CUTE AHHH WTF
also you killing Rafe's wife in your story sdoncksdjncsjk why are we all so bloodthirsty (we learn from CC I think)
OKAY GoT LET'S GO:
Bro tbh I was like 'who tf is Jory' dskjhnchjsd it's been so long and he is such a tiny character. But you are right. He was so unproblematic (such people don't survive in GoT btw)
Lysa is a crazy bitch. That is all.
Bran is baby. Theon is a little questionable indeed. I love Tyrion. I love all the Lannisters actually (don't @ me)
Rhaegar is one of my fave characters ;)
There is a reason why Jorah hates Ned (Jorah is in the wrong - Ned is precious)
If having a dog means I have to talk to strange men, then I am never getting a dog omg lmao.
PS - please update me about GoT (because shit is about to get real baby)

dw be pushy but when can we expect an update of brilliant dragon marked fanfic?
Hi anon, it’s not pushy at all. I had hoped to update Dragon Marked on Thursday or Friday this past week, but I’ve ended up taking a surprise getaway to the coast and that set me back a bit.   I should be updating Dragon Marked sometime this week (we’re heading home tomorrow and I already have about 1k written of chapter 5). I also have a Dany/Jorah one shot that should be getting posted in the next couple days as well (it’s in the editing/beta process right now), so I should be posting Dany/Jorah fic twice this week!
