Lord of War    [trailer]
An arms dealer confronts the morality of his work as he is being chased by an Interpol Agent.
After hearing that Nicolas Cage has been extradited to Russia in a prisoner swap - well, not really - I thought it's time for a re-watch.
It holds up very well. I like that it keeps up the cynicism right until the end. That's the necessary fitting tone when telling this particular story inspired by real historical events.
Nicolas Cage is in top form. Jared Leto back then is still acting fairly normal. Ethan Hawke's character could have had a little more to do.
Overall still a very enjoyable watch.

“Jeremy Kyle said Meghan should be pushed down a well, Eamonn Holmes wanted to push Meghan off a balcony, Piers Morgan wrote that Harry and Meghan should be dismembered and lets not forget Jeremy Clarkson wanting to have excrement pelted at Meghan… so for those who claim that Kate or other royal ladies suffered the same amount of abuse as Meghan - nah, I don't think so.” - Submitted by Anonymous

Two months prior to its release, would-be doyens of Swift’s Tortured Poets Department have taken its barbed track listing very literally, leading to intense, often nefarious speculation regarding Swift’s six-year relationship with the British actor Joe Alwyn, which seemingly ended in early 2023.
The album’s title, revealed onstage at the Grammy awards, was quickly linked to a December, 2022 interview with Alwyn and Paul Mescal in which they revealed that Andrew Scott started their group chat, the Tortured Man Club. (“It hasn’t had much use recently,” Alwyn said: you wonder if it’s undergone a recent revival.) Swift revealed the leading track list a day later: My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys, So Long, London, I Can Do It With a Broken Heart, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, to name a few, sending fans wild with speculation.
Swift, obviously, has every right to sing about her relationships however she wants to (no apologies to Eamonn Holmes). But in the absence of any music, some fans have spread baseless, dangerous and even libellous allegations about Alwyn’s conduct (which, for obvious reasons, I can’t repeat).
Last month, a brief fan-shot video of them dining in a New Orleans restaurant in December, 2022 was recirculated online with AI-doctored audio that made it sound as though Alwyn is saying “you don’t get to tell me about sad,” a line printed on the back of one of the new album’s four physical editions.
When Swift recently told a crowd that she was “lonely” when writing her 2020 album Folklore – some of which was co-written with Alwyn during the pandemic, a lonely time for most – fans took that as further confirmation of their theories. A live medley of three songs that all appear to reference cheating threw petrol on the fire.
Swift could make this stop. She is no stranger to airing her displeasure with the likes of Ticketmaster, Scooter Braun, Spotify and Apple Music, and, occasionally, politicians. Before she released Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) last year, she gave a veiled speech at one Eras tour date effectively asking fans not to go after John Mayer, whom she dated when she was 19 and he was 32 and is understood to be the subject of that album’s Dear John.
“I am not putting this album out so you should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I wrote a song about 14m years ago when I was 19,” she said in Minneapolis.
But for whatever reason – and obviously, no member of the public has any idea what transpired between her and Alwyn so far – this time she has opted to stay quiet.
Establishing a baseline for conduct is neither commercially risky nor unprecedented: just last week, Ariana Grande said, after the release of her post-divorce album Eternal Sunshine: “Anyone that is sending hateful messages to the people in my life based on your interpretation of this album is not supporting me and is absolutely doing the polar opposite of what I would ever encourage”.
It feels like the endgame of a cat-and-mouse act that’s gone too far. Swift’s gestures towards meaning have led every single thing she does to be considered a kind of marketing, a clue to be solved. It leaves a superstar who’s usually hot on her messaging open to misinterpretation: hints about her personal life are turned by some fans into witch-hunts for anyone perceived to have wronged her; her current silence on politics allows politicians to invoke her name, from the New South Wales police commissioner quoting Swift’s anti-haters lines while defending police to Joe Biden joking that the matter of her apparently much sought-after endorsement is “classified” on Late Night With Seth Meyers.
When Swift made a blandly neutral handwritten post encouraging US citizens to register to vote on Super Tuesday, some fans speculated that her unusual left-leaning handwriting was the real indication of her loyalties – suggesting they’re so starved of substance that they’re reading into empty messages because of this dynamic she has established. (The more likely explanation is the insane way she holds a pen.)
For Swift to only direct fans as to her wishes when it suits her, it weakens her status as a truth-teller. If the comparisons with Dickinson mean anything, she might remember that nothing in the world has as much power as a word feels like the endgame of a cat-and-mouse act that’s gone too far.

Angela repeating this narrative about Mike and IG. by u/Feisty_Energy_107
Angela repeating this narrative about Mike and IG. Mike Tindall given a 'high position' in the Invictus Games - Prince Harry is 'FURIOUS!' (gbnews.com) (Sorry, I can't get it to make an archive version for me. I'm from Australia and grew up with BBC and British TV, but there are still references that take me by surprise. For example, you would believe the "Mitchell Brothers" were real celebrities and ran the entire UK with how many references are made to them, especially across panel shows. Do you experience this? I often /understand/ why certain references, like popular soaps, are, indeed, popular, but I'm still surprised by just how much they're talked about!
omg this is HILARIOUS and YES!!!
i think this will be very funny for any of my uk & ireland followers to read? hahaha
i get asked all the time whether i understand the cultural references on panel shows and in standup (i do!) — but no one has ever asked me if i'm surprised by them! but YES. the best example i can think of is i swear to gawd there was a period of the late 2000s/early 2010s (?) when it felt like you couldn't watch a single episode of any panel show and not hear a noel edmonds joke. noel edmonds. noel edmonds. do you understand how absolutely meaningless that name is to an american like me? but omg i've heard 10000000000000 noel edmonds jokes/references in my day — and it DID surprise me just how much he was on people's minds! and, like you, i get it: he's super famous and he's a good punchline. but still! him and omg fuckin mick hucknall. why. why. why. why is the british light entertainment industry so obsessed with mick hucknall and making jokes about mick hucknall and references to mick hucknall. again, a name that means nothing to americans. so yes very funny to me, as a foreigner, how of all the very very famous people to reference and joke about these are some of the ones that get it the most!
so without further ado i tried to list the british cultural references that i hear the most + that also have a tinge of that "every comedian in britain thinking about pat sharp at all times and has a joke about him at the ready" feeling hahaha
series: coronation street, eastenders, springwatch, crimewatch, doctor who, blue peter, only fools and horses, mrs brown's boys
music: mick hucknall/simply red, the pretenders (it's always "you look like both of the pretenders"), noddy holder/slade, ronan keating, robbie williams/take that, blue, JLS, (there are obv groups like five and s club 7 but they’re not referenced nearly as much,) chesney hawkes
people: the chuckle brothers, eamonn holmes, terry wogan, janet street-porter, moira stuart, jeremy clarkson, noel edmonds, pat sharp (i thought pat sharp was a character on eastenders for about 10 years but that's pat butcher, who is also referenced constantly), john leslie, parky
there are obvious plenty more culturally specific people, places, and things that are referenced and discussed, and it's worth mentioning a lot of this is coming from middle-aged white people, but sheeeeesh... noel edmonds!!! maybe i just notice them now? bc i'm still kinda surprised i'm hearing janet street-porter jokes in 2023?
but i love it! i hope this post makes sense hahaha

Earlier today, I was struck by a sudden memory: I think Rob Brydon did a really weird in show in 2006 that was in the same sort of fiction-reality blend as his The Trip movies, where most people play ficitonalized versions of themselves (they’re reading a script and not improvising, but also those characters have the same name and jobs and basic persona as the real person), but also some actors play fictional characters, and it’s made by the BBC in reality but also the fictional world is about a show being made by the BBC. And there’s a show within a show, a panel show within a sitcom. Sort of near Amstell’s Grandma’s House levels of fictional. Almost exactly The Trip levels of fictional, which might be why I remembered it today, because I was downloading Alan Partridge things today and remembered that Steve Coogan exists.
Here's what I thought of today without looking it up: It's a sitcom about Rob Brydon hosting a really shit history-based panel show, with Dave Gorman as a team captain, and we see the making of the panel show as well as little clips of the panel show itself, and there are lots and lots of celebrity guests because people keep turning up to play themselves as guests on the panel show. One time, Rob Brydon ends up nearly having a threesome with Eamonn Holmes and his wife, I think? At some point James Corden shows up, playing himself, as is gay with Russell Tovey, even though James Corden and Russell Tovey are the only two people from the entire History Boys movie who did not appear to be gay with each other. Also, there’s a whole long storyline about Rob Brydon falling in love with Russell Tovey. And even though it’s 2007 (in season 2) and this is a satirical comedy show where nothing is real, it’s not treated as a joke. I mean, they make jokes about it, it’s not a romantic drama or anything, but it’s like a genuine romantic subplot and not just a joke about how it would be funny if Rob Brydon were gay.
I remembered that today, and then I thought that’s an interesting fever dream I had a few years ago, I wonder why I came up with that. But no, I took the internet and confirmed that this did happen. That shouldn’t really have required confirmation, since it’s only been a few years since I watched it and that shouldn’t be long enough to forget it exists, but it’s such an odd thing that I did briefly, honestly wonder if I’d made it up.
I downloaded it today, thought I might re-watch some. Because I recall it being pretty funny, but I don’t recall much else about it even though I watched it fairly recently (early 2021, I think, maybe late 2020), probably because most of it would have gone over my head. I know it’s full of self-referential in-jokes about the British TV industry/comedy industry/celebrity world circa 2006-2007 – possibly enough in-jokes about that sort of thing to be annoying to the average discerning viewer. But I am not the average discerning viewer, and I tend to like that sort of in-joke thing even though I know it’s not the exactly the highest form of comedy, and for some reason I also happen to have an obsession with British comedy circa 2006-2007. I’m sure I missed a lot of references when I first watched it that I’d be more likely to get now that I have spent more time obsessively learning about British comedy circa 2006-2007. Also, I have no TV shows to watch at the moment, and I don’t really want to start one I’ve not seen before right now because that would require focus, so this seems like a fun thing to re-watch. Not necessarily in its entirety, but at least skimming it enough to confirm it happened.
Does anyone else remember this? Has anyone else seen it? Are we sure it’s not a fever dream I had? Because what I’m remembering, particularly that business in season 2, was really quite strange.
