hi anon! sorry it took me so long to answer. i figured this might be helpful for others out there who have asked me similar questions, so i’ve compiled a pretty comprehensive list of tutorials/resources. idk about others but when i was new to giffing, it took me a lot of painful effort to go around and look for resources, so i’m putting it all here to make it a little easier!

i download videos using 4k video downloader. it will download very good quality 1080p videos in .mp4 format. if you’re downloading a 4k video, make sure to change the setting option to .mkv so that you get 4k and not 1080p—for obvious reasons since you want the highest quality.

i rely on kpopexciting to get .ts files — which are basically raw, very high quality video files for live performances. they are much less grainy than .mp4 versions of live performances—which are the ones you’ll see uploaded to youtube. i’ve found that 4k videos (in .mkv) are just as good quality as .ts, but obviously you will rarely see live performances in 4k, so get .ts when you can!! you can also try to find .ts files on twitter, but you may have to do a lot of digging. i wish i could recommend you twitter accounts, but the ones i used to go to have been very inactive/taken down all their drives :( but this website is really nice and updated frequently so i would recommend it!

vapoursynth links + download. the reason you would use vapoursynth is to resize your gif, while maintaining the optimal quality of the gif. if you gif without vapoursynth (.ie only using photoshop), it will still be fine, but the image quality may be grainier. also, you will definitely need vapoursynth to gif .ts files —more will be explained in the tutorial i’ve linked below. i would recommend that you have a high processing/lots of ram/newer desktop or laptop to use vapoursynth so that 1, your computer isn’t fried and 2, your vapoursynth process will go a lot faster. i am using a 2017 macbook pro for all my work, and it runs pretty well, but my laptop still gets pretty hot so just make sure you’re not running a million things in the background while using adobe products and vapoursynth lol. i used a pretty old and beat up 2011 model macbook air back then, and i will say that yes vapoursynth worked and ran on it, but it took much longer, and basically fried the laptop’s battery (aka i had to get the battery changed twice and the laptop would die randomly) but issok it was a school borrowed laptop so i didn’t feel too bad lol. im just saying this as a precaution, to preserve the health of your electronic devices!! but don’t be afraid to use vapoursynth! you should still try it at least once.

thank you to @dreamcolouring for this lifesaver!!! the best and easiest way to blur out unwanted captions/objects in your gifs. i recommend doing this step after converting your frames to video timeline and before you do sharpening and coloring. another tip i’ll add is to feather the selection you’ve made right before you click on “add vector mask” —this will make sense once you’ve read through the tutorial. feathering it will make the blurred spot less noticeable and more subtle.

i use this generator to create gradient colored captions! copy and paste your text, then select the colors you want. generate the code, and copy it. change the settings of the text editor on your post to HTML. paste the code, preview, and voila! add elements <blockquote>,<b>,<i>, etc as needed. see more on colored captions in this tutorial by @kylos​ --i believe op mentioned a different and better color generator but for some reason it won’t work for me :( hopefully it works for u! basically same idea as the previous generator i mentioned.

my own mini tutorial/workflow process of making gifs. this includes working with a .ts file, vapoursynth, photoshop, coloring, watermarking, etc. and a few of my own tips below:

if you are working with an .mp4, you do not have to make any changes to the preprocessor/denoise filters/sharpening in the resizing part of vapoursynth—it doesn’t make that big of a difference if you do. but if you are working with a .ts file, definitely do make those changes,, that’s the whole reason you have vapoursynth. with an .mp4, i like to use vapoursynth to just resize, but i don’t add any additional settings. i use smart sharpen in photoshop to sharpen it, which is pretty good on it’s own (at least in photoshop 2020!).

my rule of thumb is to do add .02 seconds when i am setting frame delay. so if when you first import the frames, they are at 0.04 seconds, i usually change them to 0.06. of course, this is my personal taste—you can make all your gifs faster or slower depending on how you want em to look.

if you are on a mac, you can screen record by pressing Command+Shift+5 (it’s a shortcut to quicktime screen recording). I only screen record for things like the beyond live concert or other live streamed events. the image quality of the screen recording, in my experience, is actually pretty good. when you gif the screen recording however, you may notice that it adds extra frames that you don’t need. by that i mean duplicate frames. you could keep the duplicate frames but that just means the size of your gif is going to be much bigger (keep in mind the limit is 8mb). in order to remove those duplicates, my only solution has been to remove them manually (by holding Command while selecting), or when you are importing the video to frames, select the option to “limit to every 2 frames”—but this method will be less precise and still not as good as manually removing frames. if you remove the duplicate frames, this means you will need to set the frame delay even slower, to make up for lost frames. in my experience, fps(frames per second) and frame delay work in conjunction. so for example, if i delete every other frame because they are duplicates,  but the starting frame delay is 0.02, i am now going to change it to something like 0.05 (so i added 0.03 seconds rather than my usual 0.02). if the duration length and the image dimensions of the gif are short/small, feel free to keep the duplicate frames in—i only delete duplicate frames in order to keep my gif under the 8mb limit. then, if you keep the duplicate frames in, continue with your standard frame delay preferences.  now that i’m writing this im realizing this might not make a lot of sense lol.. but don’t worry about it for now and if you run into trouble w screen recorded gifs then you can come back to this for reference. again, this is only my experience recording on a mac—it may be a lot different if you use a screen recording program or are on a pc.

i don’t really use .psd templates because i like to give every gif/gifset it’s own unique coloring—so i remake the coloring every time, but if you get into a rhythm it’s pretty easy. there are a lot of nice coloring tutorials out there, too! my personal coloring adjustments in order: levels, exposure, color balance, selective color (if needed), vibrance, photo filter (if needed), color lookup (i use 2strip most often and i put it on ‘color’ blending mode). don’t forget to adjust the opacities and fills of the ‘color lookup’ adjustment layer in case it’s too strong. go back to correct each adjustment layer as needed. then, when you’re done and satisfied, group all those layers, copy the group (you can do an easy command+c), and paste it onto the next gif you’re working on for easy workflow.

if for some reason you can’t see the frames when you import your layers/video, it’s likely because your ‘timeline’ window isn’t showing up. just go to the window menu on photoshop, go to the bottom and you’ll see ‘timeline.’ make sure it has a check next to it.

i recommend watermarking your gifs because a lot of people like to repost tings these days 😠 - so make sure u got your brand on it! i keep my watermark saved to my ‘libraries’ in photoshop so it’s ready when i need it. i use the blending mode ‘overlay’ and adjust the opacity, but if you don’t want to do that you can also add a stroke/shadow to your watermark/do all sorts.

keep in mind that giffing takes a lot of patience, energy, and experience—so don’t worry if it takes you a bit to figure things out or if your gifs don’t turn out the way you want them to the first time around. we all start at the same place and all run into problems. i know giffing can sound intimidating and seem like a lot of work, but i promise, once you get into a routine, giffing is going to happen in minutes—and you’ll get beautiful gifs. have fun! 😊

riley - apparently that wasn't the plan, the things we were going to get back got destroyed when we were on our way, they didn't want to leave traces.

desi- but what about the hackers? we left them free? 

riley- matty said that they aren't important, the CIA know who they work for. they just need to get the archives back. 

desi- so we have to wait until you hack them? 

riley- * typing in her laptop* yup das it. 

desi-  i guess we aren't having fun today.

its 3:00 pm riley is still working, while bozer is busy ordering room service and watching his favorite movies. desi and mac are on the other side of the room talking.

desi-  do you really think she can do it? i mean it seem that those hackers know what they are doing.

mac- riley is the best hacker i have ever know, she's the best at her work trust me, you have to trust her. 

desi - i get it but what is she don't? 

mac-  you don't know Riley.. she will.

but they didn't know that this mission was especially for Riley. it's 5:15pm and Riley is tired but hasn't stopped since they got there still working without a break. her hands hurt from pressing the keys for hours. then mac approached to her to see how she was doing.

mac- hey how you doing, you almost done?

riley- yeah almost.. this guys are really good, their system is like..

mac- hey come on, stunt these guys, they won't know who hit them. but please can you hurry up bozer want me to read a script he wrote about some aliens.    *she laughed* 

riley- i heard you two back there. she looked at him in the eyes.

mac- *looked at her nervous* hey don't get mad at her it's just shes new to the team.

it's 7:30 they are outside the hotel on their way to the car and the hackers were walking in front of them and bozer started to run and the hackers immediately knew it was them so they started shooting.

riley- i did but it was a matter of time to they to found out.* they got in the car while desi and mac were fighting the bad guys* desi left three of them  unconscious and mac trow a the other 2 inside some garbage cans* they got in the car and leaved as fast as they could.

They are at the phoenix, as soon as they entered the room matty was there waiting for them. she looked really anxious. 

matty- what quite of a mission was that uh? 

mac - hah yeah it was * he said while crossing his arms and looking at Riley, and she looked at him and  raise her eyebrows*

matty- so i didn't know if i should said this to Riley alone but i prefer to said it to all of you instead. 

mac- * looked at everyone in the room and said: its something wrong? *Riley looked scared and anxious but did not showed her emotions she kept herself calm*

bozer- matty what's going on?

matty-  this mission was specially for Riley... Riley the information you recovered was from a mission this agent of the CIA was getting from a undercover job, unfortunately he was removed of the job, we don't know why. 

desi-  but what does that have to do with riley? 

matty- this mission was a test, if you could get the information back you would go undercover to finish the job instead of the other agent.. 

mac and bozer jumped and said at the same time: woow... hold on.

mac- matty are you sure about this?

bozer- yes matty don't they have like a bunch of agents there. desi, bozer and mac just looked at Riley 

riley- stayed in silence. and just nodded. and asked: but why me, why did they choose me?

matty- they want someone with your abilities and this is an important mission, Riley youre ready for this next step and i'm not asking you have to do it, its your job. and the rest of you can leave. 

mac and bozer looked at her angry. desi looked at them calm and then they left  the room and everyone went home except for matty and Riley.

matty- sit down.*Riley sat in the arm of the couch. matty got closer to her*

matty- i know this is a though one. and it was harder for me to accept that this work was for you... Riley you're like a daughter to me, never doubt that you're a very important part on this team, you need to know that this is a next step in your work, IN your life, i believe that you can do this. *riley’s eyes got teary* jack will be proud of you.

Riley- Matty, thank u, and as you said this is my job i have to do it so i will. 

Matty- good, they want you to start tomorrow but i talked to them so they can have you in 2 weeks. *Riley smiled and Matty gave her a hug* and matty continued and gave her the last details.

Thoughts on the Taylor collab with Ice Spice? In February Matty mockingly called ice spice an inuit spice girl and a chubby Chinese lady. The podcast he said this on was deemed offensive and was deleted and at a concert he apologized by saying "im kind of a bit sorry if I've offended you." A couple of months later Matty and Taylor went public and she collabed with ice spice. It's just a coincidence it's with her? It was done as a further apology and to not look like a racist person by being associated with Matty? Because some are not buying this as anything but performative pr. And the same people who are side eying Taylor are saying they're glad ice spice is cashing in on the white guilt. But this just seems like pandering if Taylor did this collab to make herself look good. And I honestly still havn't decided if they're an actual couple or pr. So if they are, they were probably together for a while, he said what he said about ice spice and Taylor was like oh shit, I better collab with her quickly before our relationship goes public. Obviously i'm just making up stories here to fill in the gaps of what we do know but I'm trying to understand what's really going on here and I wanted your opinion.

There's a lot here that reflects what I find tedious about the way Matty Healy and Taylor Swift are being discussed at the moment. In addition, trying to be clear about what happened is important to me, so it really bothers me that you're stating something as fact that is straight up not true in your second sentance.

But you asked me for my opinion - so I'm going to try and explore what I do find interesting. I think it's useful to start with what we don't know - we don't know when the collaboration was conceived and we don't know the timeline of Taylor's relationship with Matty Healy.

We can make guesses about both those things. There's photos from the studio that people can place. There are people who knows things about how long it takes to make CDs. People who pay more attention to Taylor and Ice Spice may be able to figure out when there were spaces for them to film. People who know more than me about CGI can guess how long these shots would have taken (one thing to take into account is that if Ice Spice was added at the last minute then her shots might have been filmed later). We can't know for sure about the timeline of the video, but it would be possible to put together some guesses with reasonable minimums and then figure out how that compares to the options for Taylor's relationship with Matty Healy.

But even if we did know the timeline and what was possible - that wouldn't give us any answers about motivations - we rarely know people's motivations. We can make them up - but when we do that's a choice we make. Keep making stories to fill the gaps with what we know if we want anon - but I think it's also useful to develop an understanding that they're just stories and they don't matter.

It is after all, just a remix, and I think it's very easy to put far too much weight on it. I will again link to the Gary Younge article that explains what's a stake if we treat racism as a series of bloopers rather than a system of power.

So I decided that I needed to make a separate post for this. Please read through if you have the time!  

To start off, I apologize sincerely if I stole someone’s work without credit. It was definitely not my intention to do so, and have taken many measures to try and mend my mistakes, but it doesn’t change the fact that I didn’t credit. It may sound like excuses to whoever is angry about this, but please let me explain myself and the situation I was in.

It’s my first time on tumblr, and I am still so unfamiliar with this website and how it works. I think I was still too used to the asianfanfics layout, which lets me copy and paste a url and it’ll credit it automatically. Unfortunately, tumblr’s photo system is not similar to the one I mentioned, so I decided the fastest way to do so would be to save and upload, not knowing it would make me the “source” and I automatically assumed that was how everyone else did it.

However, after trial and error, and some anon messages letting me know, I realized that was not the case and that I was making a huge mistake in assuming so. I backtracked and made sure to tag “gif not mine” in order to try and let readers know the media was not mine at all, but it was also my mistake of not making it obvious enough, by putting the tag at the end of all my other tags.

I then started to change the method I was using and proceeded to copy and paste the pictures onto my posts. Since that meant I wasn’t saving the picture and uploading, I thought it would have the “originally posted by:” banner underneath it when it was posted. But unfortunately it didn’t and so I tried to make a (x) with a credit for Sutures and Stitches part 3, but realized the credit wasn’t proper, so I tried to make amends by rushing a project I was working on: my headers.

I replaced the post with the (x) before anyone could reblog it and managed to avoid making that mistake again.

I apologize, it took me a few more days after receiving your message to finally realize the weight of my actions. But your message was the one I considered a polite warning. You sent me another anon this morning, and I think you misunderstood my words. I did not “accuse you of accusing me” but instead directed those words to the following person. I also tagged in my headers post “thank you for being patient” and so on to express my gratitude for your messages, which were polite and gave me the idea of starting my own headers. Thank you again. You were not the one I said “accused me,” but you were the one when I said “and politely suggesting <3 like the one I answered.” I hope this clears up the misunderstanding.

The other anon just simply left me a rude, “You’re plagiarizing” with more extremely rude accusations and left me no suggestions nor time to explain myself. I addressed this anon in a reply to someone saying that I have “anons accusing me of taking creds.” To you, I’m sorry that I couldn’t figure out how to use it on time, but I didn’t reply to yours and chose to ignore it because I knew that 1) I had my header posts in the works and 2) you didn’t give me the chance to learn nor explain myself.

The header project took weeks to finish. I had to look around and find places to take pictures of with my phone, which is not easy during a full semester of college. Then I had to edit them, then buy an app to help me add text and then upload again onto my computer. And this was all rushed last night when I got another anon message about the same issue (which I replied to on my tumblr) and so I speeded up the process of the project and uploaded what little I had: the header for sutures and stitches and for when war runs deep.

I’ve already deleted the gifs on my stories I replaced with headers, and have gotten rid of the credits as well because I am no longer using said gif. I uploaded my own property headers in order to reflect on my actions, but it seems like the mistakes I made will remain on my blog and in the histories of the reblogged versions of my stories.

Anyway, final week of the'Launch it Challenge!'

Week 5, we are going online guys! Let's get your domain name + website off the ground. 

Domain names

So now you have your amazing business name, you may just want to slow down a second because to get the final tick of approval, you will need to search the domain name data base to see if your business name or variation is available. What is a domain name? Well if your a tue beginner to all this, let me briefly spell it out. A domain name is your online address. With out a domain, you can't really exit online so in our "How to launch your online business challenge" a domain name is 101 of online business. Who you purchase your online address, you will then be able to use it as your actual website address + also to create custom email addresses. 

There are lots of domain name hosts , these are just a few to go check out. I have used crazy domains mostly but there really are so so many so don't limit yourself to these few. Just wanted to make it easy for you to have snoop and get your head around it.

Theres a few sites to get you going. It's free to search and you only pay when you find a domain name that you want to purchase. Honestly most are similar in price but occasional some will have specials so it can be worth shopping around to save a few dollars. So how it works, you will pop your potential business name into the domain name search area.  Let's have a play around with a hypothetical name ummmmmmmmm lol thinking, thinking, ok our business name is 'launch it' so now I will throw launchit (no spaces) into the domain name search + hit enter. So now you will see a bunch of options come up, launchit.com, launchit.com.au, lauchit.net.au, launchit.melbourne. So there are heaps of domain name combinations that will be offered to you, but of course only the ones that haven't already been taken by some other business savvy peep. The most popular domain name combos are obviously .COM,  if your in Australia, .COM.AU, New Zealand .COM.NZ , Europe .COM.EU , you get it!

Now if your business is strictly online and you offer an international service then you will want to aim to get .COM. Why?  Well you will show up in search engines all over the world rather than just your country. It also communicates instantly that you are an international brand. I currently have www.soulshapes.com.au but I also have soulshapes.com on back order as it is currently used by a small photography business in America. Now on this point, if your domain name is not available you will need to go and visit the website to assess whether you want to continue with your business name. Just because your domain name is taken, does NOT mean you have to give up the idea of using it yourself. Go and find + research website with the domain name you wanted for yourself. Look into what sort of company they are. If it is a small company in a different industry in a total different country you may just need to tweak your name a little and you will be fine to still use it yourself. If a company has trademarked a name then that is different again and there are search engines available to search trademarks too. I know in Australia you can search through the business name registry and it will also list trademarks.  In Australia you can have a similar name to another business but it can't be exactly the same. Now if your wanting to stand out as a leader your not going to want a name similar to anyone else in your industry. You will firstly look un original and you will just get lost in website searches. So as I said if you have a name and someone else has something similar but it is not trademarked, they are in a different industry and country I say go for it!  Maybe add on a little extra variation like "launch it Australia" or "Launch it Live"to avoid any copyright issues and even further personalise your brand. With regards to trademarked names I would advise getting a professional to look into your name before going ahead. Make sure your chosen name is legal, and register your name with your country's Business Name Registry before going into our next step which is creating your website!

  Creating you website

This is the FUN bit, but it is also a bit of a headache if you have never done it before. I guess my first bit of advise is, if you have not done this before and you do have a budget you may want to just skip this and outsource it. Sometimes outsourcing can be the best thing you can do for your business and if your wanting cutting edge, top of the range layout and flow then outsourcing could be something to consider.  Although, yes many website platforms make it super easy to create your own website and of course Im about to go into all of that, it's still worth noting that their is a lot more to a good website than just throwing up a few paragraphs of writing and photos. If your looking at creating a large online store and you really want to have an international presence then yes follow these tips, I can totally give you heaps of advise to get you up online, but I will only be touching on it and you will still need to do your own extended research on copyright, layout, graphic communication ect. So  just wanted to to emphasise there is a heap of work that goes into a good website and outsourcing to those who do it everyday may be quicker than trying to teach yourself to become a net nerd overnight. If you don't have a budget, and you are ready to put in lots of hours in layout and content research then whoop lets get on it!

Now that you have your domain name lets go find you a host. These are just a few to get the ball rolling.

Obviously you will want to check out price, versus value. A few things to look for are, how many pages do you get? Do you get a free personalised email? Some will include SEO optimisation which is where they will help your website show up in search engines + help people actually find you. SEO is so so so important and actually quite tricky. Especially if your competing against a heap pf other large, well established companies with fully developed websites + link backs. Its definitely a great add on to have! You can do your own SEO but again theres quite an art to it and it will take a whole lot of research to get your self up on all that so it is also another great reason to outsource (at least the SEO component).

Once you have had a play, looked at a few templates and worked out which is the best value for you, go ahead and sign up and so you can get started. #exciting #youronline

When you start to create your website, you will be asked what name you want to use for the site. Once entered youwill initially be given a domain name with the hosts name attached. So if you created your site name as "launchitlive" and you are with wordpress.com, then your web address will read www.launchitlive.wordpress.com. Now we of course do NOT want the host name in our web address and because your a super savvy domain name holder your now going to want to customise your address to your personalised domain address. Every platform has tabs in which you can go ahead and customise your sites account details. Details such the website address are customisable and you will need to find where you can import your own domain name and follow the prompts. Don't be scared if things are starting to look a little too geek town like at first,  it really is simple and you will be just entering your personalised domain name that you want your host {wordpress) to take over and host on your behalf. So you will need to specify the exact domain name in full www.launchitive.com.au + also the current host for the domain name. So if you purchased your domain name from crazydomains.com.au you will enter that in to the section that asks for current host address. Once you have popped those two important details into your website host - import domain name area, your new domain name will start to transfer over to and become your new website address. Once you have started the process of transferring your domain name over to your new host (your website) you don't need to do any more. But it is really worth noting that sometimes it can take a few weeks for a domain name to transfer over to a new host. If your wanting to get your site up asap then purchase your domain name from the same place you intend to host your website. This is the quickest way to get your self up and running and possibly will ensure fewer glitches.

Ok so your domain name is up, and your website now reads www.lauchitlive.com.au and the wordpress component has gone! Yes looking good!

Colours, Font + Layout

Ok now this is what I am good at and is really up my alley as a designer. Your now ready to start telling the word all about your services/ products. If your like me you may just want to jump straight on and start playing.

To save yourself sometime, I would actually get a few things clear in your mind before jumping on a playing around like a mad person ( yea this me).

List the colours you love and think suits your brand

Think of the imagery that suits your brand

Choose legible, easy to read fonts. Think about the style of font too, is communicating 2017 fresh + modern or 1995 tacky town

Is their any additional themes you might want to have associated with your branding? (Vintage, country, modern, simple ect)

Do you have testimonials from clients/customers that you can add to your site? (So important!!)

Will you be including a blog? If so what will you call it, what will you talk about with your readers?

Have you got your company policies/ terms and conditions ready to go? (you may need to outsource this)

Really think about the layout and how the information will flow from one page to the next

Once you are clear on the above it will make creating the site so much easier than figuring it all out along the way. In saying that I created mine as I went along and it did take me a lot longer which is why Im giving you this heads up! As I said Im only just touching on all of this as to go into it fully would mean quitting my job as an interior designer + I really need to get back to my own actual work!

honestly this rp is dying and it's sad that people join for like two days and see how your members don't make them feel included. there's almost 200 members and people only get 30rts IF THEY ARE LUCKY. get your shit together man

on a regular day we would delete this but i (miroslava) wanted to address this. 

we usually ignore this kind of messages but man im so heated right now and i will tell you why. first, june is almost here, which means that finals are about to happen. most of our members asked for a hiatus due to this particular reason. roleplay should be a fun activity to do on your free never, it shall never be an obligation: not for us, not for other members, not for shipping partners. you should join a roleplay because you want to. because your muse feels safe. because you’ve made amazing connections. because you like the environment. if you wake up and act like “meh. i’ll just rt a few selfies and ghost for the next 23 hours” then something ain’t right for you bro. the other is always open. we won’t force anyone to stay if they clearly don’t want to.

i know it’s intimidating to join a new roleplay that has stablished characters, plots & relationships, but it ain’t impossible to make new pals. yeah, not everyone will reply to every single tweet we all post. the key here is communication. have you talked with new people? making the first step could be awkward but hey, its just a couple of seconds and then its over. we bump ooc tweets to the timeline, making it easier for members to look at them. you feel like your muse doesn’t quite fit in? revamp! change your faceclaim! ask us for plots! we’ll be glad to help you out. ask our current members, whenever they ask for faceclaim changes, they have always been approved. whenever someone feels like dropping a current character & making a revamp version of them, we’ll be the first one to support you. why keeping a character you don’t like? we wanna see both—characters and muns—happy.

again, the selfie thing. listen. most mun’s here have 4 or 5 characters. if someone already retweeted it at one account, most likely they won’t do it in another. and it’s okay. yeah, we encourage every single photo to get some love & appreciation, but don’t stress about this kind of things. why focusing on how many likes and retweets a single pic has when you could focus on developing your muse? is it even worth it?

last, what makes me even more mad is “get your shit together man”. we’ve always been polite & keep everything toned down when this type of messages happen but, seriously? comments, recommendations, advice, event/tasks ideas and all that shall always be welcome as long as they’re done with the respect we—as humans & admins—deserve. it’s pretty easy to talk and blame us for things that happen here. the real question is: what are you doing to fix it?. and on your message all you say are negative things or aspects “we could change”. alright, and what do you propose? all constructive critics should include a solution. where’s yours? why hiding as anon and not coming forward. we could make things private & clear. instead you’ve chosen to make things public & rude. why? we’re human beings able to talk and think rationally. why choosing the worst way possible to express your opinion when time after time we’ve expressed our will to dialogue and handle things like adults.

Make no mistake: content errors harm your brand and SEO

How to optimize for audience trust. Plus, four tips for dealing with mistakes that can kill your brand’s reputation.

Trust matters. Whether you’re creating content for a standalone brand publication or a company blog, you want people and search engines to trust the information on your website is accurate and current.

Now, with engagement metrics seemingly becoming a larger factor in SEO, you can’t have one without the other. Google won’t trust (and reward rankings to) a website that doesn’t attract and engage an audience, and visitors won’t trust (or even find) content that doesn’t rank well on Google.

Trust is how you build that audience.

For publishers, content is your product and your brand. You establish a relationship with your audience through the content you publish.

Sometimes your content will simply fail to generate the traffic, rankings, shares, and leads you were hoping for.

But something even worse could happen. For most publishers, it’s inevitable. It’s not a question of if, but when.

You could publish content that contains inaccurate information. Not just small typos or spelling mistakes – stuff that’s worthy of an apology and a correction (or even a retraction).

Will such a huge mistake be forgotten by the following day? Perhaps, especially if you’ve built a really strong brand and you don’t make any more huge mistakes.

But if your brand consistently publishes content filled with errors, will it make your core audience start to question whether your brand can be trusted? Absolutely. Your brand will look amateurish.

People have zero tolerance for content that wastes their time.

Losing the trust of your audience will ultimately damage your brand and cause serious harm to your SEO efforts.

Optimize for your audience

You need to have a clear idea of your target audience. Who do you want visiting your site on a regular basis?

What are the demographics of your target audience? Age, gender, location, job title, and income level are just a few elements that might matter to you.

What topics are of interest to your target audience? What are their wants, needs, and pain points?

What’s your content goal? Why are you creating this content – will it be the best answer or solution to a question or problem your audience has?

Figure out what topics your target audience wants to read about and will engage with. Provide that content to them and speak to them in their own language.

Optimize for authority

Although author authority may have gone out of style, authority still matters to your audience. They want to know the content they’re reading or watching comes from people who know their stuff. In other words: authors who are experts in their industry or niche.

Do your authors have full biographies? At minimum, they need a byline, photo, and details on their career and areas of expertise. If any of these elements are missing, it raises serious questions.

Do you make it easy for people to find contact information for your brand? Give your audience ways to connect with you how they want, whether it’s via social media, a contact form, email, or phone.

Do you link to your sources? Doing so gives credit to the work that helped make yours possible, helps strengthen your argument, and can be helpful for anybody reading who might want to go deeper into that subject.

Optimize for accuracy

Your audience demands you to be accurate. When you get it wrong, you’ll hear about it – in your comments section, on social media, and (should things spiral too far out of control) on other websites.

Or, even worse, you won’t hear anything at all. Traffic will just slowly erode.

Have you ever tried out a new restaurant and experienced terrible service or received the wrong order? Or both? Did you go to a review site like Yelp or TripAdvisor to give the restaurant a scathing 1-star review – or did you simply just never return to that restaurant? (Either outcome is bad for you, obviously!)

After you’ve done all the hard work of optimizing your content to get someone to visit your site, don’t greet that user a terrible content experience. Don’t let one of your worst moments be their first experience with your brand. They likely won’t be back.

Is your content edited well? Hire a great editor and content team or outsource your content marketing to a proven agency that will handle it for you.

Is your content objective? Acknowledge any biases you may have, explore multiple viewpoints whenever possible, and always try to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

Is your content current? Make it part of your regular routine to check old content. Update as needed.

Optimize for reputation

Building up a loyal, engaged audience or community has big benefits. Direct visitors spend far more time on your site and consume far more pages per month, according to Pew Research.

Readers who find your content valuable (because it is useful, solves a relevant problem, provides insight, shares a new discovery, or is just entertaining in some way) are also more likely to share that content, which leads to more people discovering your great work, subscribing, and sharing future content pieces, further expanding your reach.

The surest way to fail to halt any momentum or see your audience abandon you is to publish subpar content. As the old saying goes, bad news travels fast.

If a site declines in quality, for whatever reason, people will notice. If you screw up, people will talk about it.

In an era where fake news, alternative facts, gossip, and anonymous claims are reported as fact, your brand must hold itself to the highest standard. “Publish first and apologize later” is a losing model in the long-term.

Ultimately, people can love you or hate you for what your content says. But if your loyal audience loses trust in you, they simply won’t be there anymore.

4 tips for dealing with harmful content errors

Whether it’s mainstream media or an industry/niche site, editors are the last line of defense. Be ready.

1. Have a Plan

We all know the importance of having a social media crisis management plan. Do you have a plan in place should your content create a crisis?

Just as you should have a fire escape plan if the worst happens at your home, it’s better to have a content “fire” plan and not need it than to never have one. Decide who will own it. Ideally it should be one of the top editors or the trusted “face” of the publication.

After the crisis has passed, review whether your plan worked or failed. Adjust for the future (though hopefully you won’t have a repeat, right?).

2. Act Quickly

Internally, make sure everyone who needs to know what is going on is apprised of the situation.

Externally, acknowledge the problem across your digital channels and platforms. Explain what you’re doing to address or fix the error. Apologize.

Update the post or be present in the comments and on social media around discussions about your content crisis.

Aside from being combative toward upset readers or customers, appearing unresponsive is one of the worst things you can do now.

3. What Should Happen To Your Post?

When things go so wrong the only option you have is to remove/retract the post, what should you do? Generally, it comes down to three options:

Leave the post. Take your lumps publicly. Make sure an editor’s note or a correction appears at the top of the article. In theory, when you admit you screwed up, it will restore some level of trust. See Rolling Stone’s “A Rape on Campus” as an example of a publication that left a controversial article on its site.

Leave the page. But only with a correction or apology, explaining what happened. Here’s an example from Upworthy, which had to retract a post on artificial sweeteners.

Delete the content. Ideally, 301 redirect the page to a page on the same or a similar topic, or if that doesn’t work, to the homepage. If the information is inaccurate, you may decide to just get rid of it. You have to decide if it’s worth bringing people to a page that has zero value to you.

4. Reduce the Odds of Having a Disaster

A few quick tips to prevent some major and minor errors:

When in doubt about the claims made in an article, ask the writer for evidence (e.g., images/documents).

If still in doubt, ask for more evidence (and consider legal advice, depending on the topic).

Publish images as evidence (don’t just claim you “have images”), especially when there is no previously existing documentation.

Check names (people, places, things).

Check job titles.

Attribute ideas/quotes to original source.

Verify and link to useful sources.

You are what you publish

One major content error could be a fluke. Twice might be a coincidence. But after this point, clearly there’s a bad pattern. Your editorial process needs fixing.

It’s sort of like that famous scene from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” where the Black Knight is fighting with King Arthur. You can say your content errors are “just a flesh wound,” but really your brand is being sliced to bits.

There’s a lot of pressure to provide readers with a steady dose of content that is educational, informative, inspiring, or entertaining. But that doesn’t mean you should ever lower your standards.

You are what you publish. All the SEO in the world won’t help if the content you publish compromises the health of your brand.
