What Do Sommeliers Eat on a Night Off? 🇿🇦 🌱 🇩🇪 “Since last year I am at an innovative casual fine dining restaurant in Heidelberg called @maryjane.space. Our philosophy is to treat our guests as though they are friends coming over for dinner on the weekend. It is a small team (only three chefs, and myself in service). There aren’t the hierarchies of many other fine dining establishments, nor the stress or long hours otherwise present. The high-end gastronomy can be quite taxing on ones personal health (speaking from experience – I had a nasty burnout in 2021). #tbt to this past weekend’s Sunday shenanigans at the @oysterandchampagnefestival held at @hillcrestquarry . What a well executed and incredible event. Elegantly dressed revelers, parading in white and gold. Various local and international brands provided a constant flow of bubbles for tasting and indulging...and so with our branded flute glasses and tasting chips in hand we set out to immerse ourselves in the festivities, sipping on mcc and enthusiastically slurping down fresh oysters and treating ourselves to #black cotton candy from @houseofjcleroux ! As if this was not enough fun, the crowd was entertained by a steady stream of local talent performing live while volunteers participated in oyster shucking competitions! We were treated to spend time watching the live performances and enjoying @moetchandon in the VIP section, which was incredibly well managed and well worth the splurge, if you are planning for next year. . One of my highlights of the day, aside from the many obvious ones, was that with fairly little effort we found delicious gluten free food options among the various food stalls, that were not only happy to accommodate allergy requirements, but also served up these food options with sophisticated culinary skill. My personal favourite being the fresh white wine and herb grilled fish. . After church, my dad would put on classical music and fetch a special bottle from the cellar, and my mom would show off her cooking. It was mostly hearty and rustic dishes – roasts, casseroles, lasagne and often lamb from my aunt’s farm in the Karoo.
