J’ai bien réfléchi. Je pense qu’il est dans mon intérêt de mettre en sourdine ma personnalité raffinée pour me fondre dans la masse de l’équipage. Plus proche je serai d’eux, moins ils seront tentés de me débarquer sur une ile déserte après avoir décidé que, tout compte fait, la deuxième moitié du paiement ne vaut pas un affrontement avec le Musicien fantôme.

J’aimerais croire que le capitaine Álvarez ne laisserait pas advenir une telle vilénie, mais je ne peux être certain qu’il ne fera pas le même calcul si, par malheur, je cesse d’être une distraction suffisante à ses yeux. Cet homme semble trop fantasque que pour s’y fier.

J’ai donc chargé mon libraire de me trouver un dictionnaire d’argot marin, tâche dont il s’est acquitté avec diligence, me laissant presque deux jours pour l’étudier consciencieusement avant l’embarquement.

J’y ai découvert un chapitre sur les jurons et insultes. J’imagine que, pour une fois, un peu de vulgarité ne me tuera pas – que du contraire. J’avoue m’amuser à la lecture de ces expressions hautes en couleur.

Par ailleurs, mon librettiste m’a obtenu, je ne sais trop comment, un recueil de chansons à boire et autres œuvres paillardes, qu’il m’a remis avec un air étonné et réprobateur. Il est vrai que certaines sont franchement graveleuses. Je pense avoir achevé de le choquer en lui disant que toute source d’inspiration est bonne à prendre, et que ce répertoire inhabituel pourrait nourrir mes futures compositions.

En en répétant quelques-unes, je me suis aperçu que ce n’était qu’un demi-mensonge : si l’on fait abstraction des paroles, certaines de ces mélodies présentent des polyphonies dignes d’intérêt. Il me tarde de broder quelques variations sur cette base.

J’avais de toute façon l’intention d’emporter des instruments, dont mon violon. Je ne pourrais me passer de jouer de la musique pendant plusieurs semaines. Et je me plais à penser que ces chansons feront leur petit effet si nous en venons à faire la fête – je veux dire à « bambocher » -, ce pour quoi les pirates sont réputés.

Distrayant l’on me veut, distrayant je serai !

Speaking of the Lilac Fairy, it is quite interesting to see that the fairy godmother of Donkey Skin only receives a name in the prose version of “Donkey Skin”, whose author is actually unknown - in all of Perrault’s tale (that we can truly attribute to him), the fairy godmothers (and the fairies in general are unnamed).

The very opposite of madame d’Aulnoy, who had the habit of naming most of her fairies, good or bad.
