Fandom: Edward Scissorhands AU
Pairing: Edgar Scissorhands (Timothée Chalamet) x Female reader
Summary: (look friends, I don't even know ok I got an idea and I'm running with it so... without further ado I'm giving you this FREE of charge) In which Edgar Scissorhands (college aged son of Kim and Edward bc I said so) has gotten himself a crush. I was inspired by that commercial from like two years ago.
Length: not too bad; kinda short before we get to the meat of the story
Warnings: eventual friends to lovers, nothing risqué, some strong language.
P.S. I imagine he listens to Artic Monkey's (in general but "Love is a Laserquest" album & acoustic version for sure)

Chapter I
Now I Can't Think of There Without Thinking of You
Edgar Scissorhands envied those with actual bone-in appendages. Not for the reason you would think plausible, let's face it, his were made of metal and jagged shapes; no flesh until the wrist. He was jealous because you could twist and bend them, gnaw on the nailbeds and cuticles when you got nervous or times got tough. If he did that he'd cut up his mouth like a piss poor homage to the late and ever great Heath Ledger. Instead, anxious chewing was lost on him. A shitty replacement was his twitching blades.
He drowned out the sound, custom to his ears but he did feel them open and cut a little faster when you'd walk into class. Always five minutes late. He noticed that right away. It was funny this class, Linguistics. Edgar wasn't known for big conversations, long winded explanations about things he found absolutely fascinating and yet here he was, learning.
Professor Deetz, ruddy faced and of course in one of his wool sweaters gave him quite the look when he gingerly placed book at his desk. Eyeing him and quite possibly picturing the pages torn and ripped to shreds by his hands, a pricy investment lost on a college boy with curly hair sheepish smile.
Edgar was always careful with things, he'd poked his way through plenty of things over the years, he knew to be tender with even the thickest of volumes. He enjoyed books, they were stationary and calm, not the jittering and explosive surrounding that colleges, community or state.
His hazel eyes shot over to you on the opposite side of the rounded classroom, you dropped your keys down the tiled steps. They slipped and rolled, clanged and gathered speed causing Professor Deetz to stop mid sentence, mouth agape and watched them come to a final tumble at his feet. You yelped out a sorry and took off after them. Edgar bit back a smile as you apologized again and again as you ran back up to your seat.
His other classes were just as interesting; Law. International Relations. Theatre Arts. But... the class he shared with you was far more exciting. For the simple fact that you were there. No, you weren't some boisterous sorority recruiter or a cheer captain, you didn't play sports but you went to all the games. Face paints and school sprit, college colors striped overalls or hand painted jackets. You radiated something he hadn't experienced yet and the glass ceiling of his feelings, the stained corners were beginning to show color.
"Hi!"
Edgar jumped at his spot on the bus stop bench when you sat down extremely close. Your knees were touching. And you were smiling and smelled incredible.
"Oh uh, hi." He mumbled, wary of your intentional (maybe, unintentional... he didn't really decipher) eye contact.
"I didn't scare you did I?"
"A little."
"Sorry about that," you apologized, touching his arm (she's touching me she'stouchingmeshe'stouching--) for a second. "I don't have a sense of timing."
"Is that why you're always late on Tuesdays?" Edgar could've poked himself in the leg for that. He didn't mean it, it just sort of crawled out and sat on his lap.
You laughed. "You noticed, huh? I'm kind of scatterbrained sometimes. I mean I set several alarms and I don't think I've ever been exactly on time for anything," you shrugged, a gust of middle of the road, neither cold or hot breeze wafted your perfume or lotion or whatever it was that clung to you filled his tank a little bit more. "My mom says I'll probably be late for my own funeral. And she's probably right!"
Edgar smiled and nodded. His usual M.O. He wasn't good with small talk. Or big talk. Any kind of one on one interaction was a bit of an Olympic sport.
"Did you read through the rest of the curriculum yet?"
"Not yet."
"There's a two person project for the final," instant panic settled into his marrow. "You wanna' be partners?"
"You wanna' be my partner?" Edgar had never been picked first for anything team related. He was paired with Victor in the fifth grade for a piñata making project though, his name being called first. He supposed that might count.
"Yeah why not? You're a decent guy, right Edgar? And not to sound gossipy but," you moved closer and the tiny little hairs on the back of his neck tickled when you spoke. "Some of the others are kinda' on the clique-y side."
You wiggled your eyebrows and that made his scalp tingle. He agreed.
"Great! So do you need a ride, partner?"
"Where?"
"Where are you going?"
"Oh. Um I work after class. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays."
"Oh yeah? Where at?" You asked. Genuinely asked and he was getting used to looking at you this close up.
"Um the uh Chop, Chop, Go. It's in Jingle Bell Square in Christmas Town."
"I've never been there."
"Oh you should!" Edgar stopped himself, a smile of his own stretching across his face. He hid his mouth out of instinct, shaking a little when you unprovoked and casually grabbed the blades of what would be his last two fingers.
"Then I will. But don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Don't hide your excitement about something. If you like it, you like it. And you have a nice smile." You added, bumping shoulders before standing. He didn't even realize you had a skateboard until the wheels clacked against the cement.
"See ya' around Edgar," you pushed off, steadying yourself before you expertly called back over your shoulder. "Have a good day at work!”
Edgar leaned foreword on the bench watching you skate away, making it across the street before the light changed. He smiled to himself. He was dumbfounded because you’d just asked him if he needed a ride, as in you had a car not a skateboard. He fondly looked down at the bench, only seconds had passed but he already was beginning to miss your company. He put his hand there as if he could feel your heat.
As the bus pulled up, he scanned his bus pass on his hip to the driver and sat down. He watched the bench disappear out of view.
At least he wouldn't have to relive his first day anymore, the way the STOP pully to get off transit snapped under his scissors had the passengers ducking and diving out of the way. The driver was not happy about that.
And just his luck, that same driver was the one to pick him that evening too when his mom had been too late to pick him up. Another one of her meetings gone on too long after his shift had ended.
He didn't mind it then and he didn't mind it now.
He had something to look forward to.
He had a feeling that he wouldn't be able to think of anything other you at the stop now and the foreseeable future.
Edgar did in fact have a good day. He managed not to get yelled at again for constructing a towering salad instead of a plain bowl filling one. It was simple work with his blades, he could get customers in and out at lightning speed. Though the clean up was quite the hassle. You know; scissors for hands and all. Wooden handles weren't the best option.
"You seem in a chipper mood then when you left this morning." His mother Kim announced, tired but still on her feet with a bright smile. Always.
"Good day, I guess."
"You guess?" she laughed, holding up the door open for him and securing his seatbelt before running around the front and getting back into her seat. "Honey you're practically glowing!"
"Like I said," Edgar shrugged with a smirk. "I had a good day."
“Well whatever it is hon, I’m glad it happened to you.” She said after giving his shoulder a tender squeeze then pulled out of the parking lot.
Edgar was too.

"I think there is a very loud and vocal segment who claim to be fans of his career when, in reality, they only care about one project done in a very specific way, regardless of whether it is interesting to Tim himself. In their eyes, anything other than that particular project is doomed for failure and Tim is a sellout for signing on." The antis shading us again lol,i want timmy to have a good career but wonka is boring also i saw a lot of tim/lilothee stans on tw not liking this movie idea.
Hello, Anon:
Lilothee seems to skew quite young and is probably creeped out by the fact that LRD’s dad played the iconic role in a Tim Burton adaptation (badly, what a dreadful, joyless film) and also influenced by recent criticism of the original story and movie’s vaguely “pedophile” vibes, among other insensitive, less socially-aware themes, especially when seen through the lens of contemporary sensibilities.
The original story by Roald Dahl was published in 1964, and the original movie was released in 1971. It’s a bit shortsighted, IMHO, to impart 21st-century rules to a 20th-century product. Taken in the context in which it was written and filmed, I think the film is not without merit, and was considered a great movie in its time. It was on the syllabus in my favorite college film class, back in the dark ages. I’ve seen it twice on a big screen as an adult, though I grew up watching it as a child on TV, and it’s a different movie entirely when viewed as director Mel Stuart intended. Especially as an adult. And maybe that’s the issue.
So if you’re looking for someone to agree with you about the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Mel Stuart, starring the incomparable Gene Wilder, you’ve come to the wrong inbox.
If you’re looking for someone who hated the Tim Burton version and can’t even look at Johnny Depp in that role, you’ve come to the right place.
Regarding the backlash: Can you imagine being an actor, working so hard your entire life to hone your craft, hoping to play a wide range of different characters, only to be locked into playing the same role over and over again?
Now THAT is boring.
I don’t expect Timmy will ever be satisfied with playing one note for his career, and anyone who expects or wishes him to do so is a Timmy fan for little else than his eye-candy appeal.
Which is a shame. Because the man is so incredibly intelligent and ridiculously talented. Young fans especially don’t quite seem to understand that THAT is why he has so many older fans, like me. We’re the ones who recognize that Timothée Chalamet’s gifts go so far beyond his beautiful face and teen idol appeal. I’m like a very proud auntie about him. I have absolutely no desire to be his girlfriend. He makes me want to be Kim, Edgar Scissorhands’ mom.
This is the essence of Timothée Chalamet’s extraordinary gifts: He’s a storyteller. He has something meaningful to say in the characters he brings to life.
So let him tell us a story. In whatever way he wants.
Thanks for your comment. 😊💜

The Super Bowl ads generating big buzz before Sunday’s big game
Tumblr media
It might not have seemed likely early in the coronavirus pandemic, but the 55th Super Bowl Sunday is upon us yet again. Each year, United States advertisers pull out all the stops to entertain the crowd of 100 million viewers expected to tune in to the CBS broadcast on Sunday. This year there are more than 20 newcomers as well as old favourites. Amazon shows off a sexy new body for its Alexa assistant, actor Dan Levy apologises for eating M&M’s, and Bud Light Seltzer Lemonade makes a downpour of lemons a metaphor for 2020’s troubles. And as always, expect some surprises, too.
Amazon: New Body
In an ad ostensibly to tout Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa’s new spherical shape, a woman imagines that her new Alexa has the voice — and body — of actor Michael B Jordan, who takes off his shirt to dim the lights and read an audiobook to her in the tub, all to the chagrin of her hapless husband. It’s one of the only ads to play with sexual innuendo this year.
“It pushes the sexiness, the weirdness, the fantasy element, which is just so culturally right for the moment when people are stuck at home together without a lot of diversion,” said Mark DiMassimo, creative chief of marketing agency DiMassimo Goldstein.
Bud Light Seltzer Lemonade: Last Year’s Lemons
Bud Light introduces its new Seltzer Lemonade with an ad that depicts a downpour of literal lemons in 2020, which ruins weddings, cancels flights, disrupts at-home haircuts, destroys baseball stadium cardboard cutouts — and causes general chaos. It’s a not-so-subtle nod to the plans that were derailed during 2020 and the axiom “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
Cadillac: Edgar Scissorhands
In another nostalgia-fest, Cadillac revisits the classic 1990 movie Edward Scissorhands. In the ad, actor Timothee Chalamet portrays Edward’s son Edgar, who has difficulty with his inherited scissor hands when he deflates a football and severs a bus’s stop cord. Then he tries out the Cadillac Lyriq’s “hands-free super cruise” feature, which allows you to drive with little hand contact. Winona Ryder from the original film also revisits her role as Edgar’s mother.
Cheetos: It Wasn’t Me
Cheetos’s ad shows real-life married couple Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher wrangling over a bag of Cheetos Crunch Pop Mix — to the tune of Shaggy’s 2000 pop hit It Wasn’t Me — with the frayed nerves of a couple who have been stuck inside too long.
Dr Squatch
There are more than 20 first-time advertisers this year, but most are sticking to nostalgia and celebrities to stand out. Dr Squatch, a little-known direct-to-consumer soap and personal care brand, is one of the few to embrace weird humour to stand out. The tongue-in-cheek ad shows a man walking through the woods espousing why Dr Squatch’s natural soap is the right choice for the modern man who “opens pickle jars” and “lets his daughter braid his hair”.
GM: No Way Norway
When Will Ferrell finds out Norway has more electric vehicles per capita than the US, he goes on a madcap journey spanning countries with singer and actress Awkwafina and comedian Kenan Thompson to show that General Motors’ new battery for electric cars will soon be available for everyone.
Inspiration4: Join Us
In what is surely a first in Super Bowl history, an ad for Inspiration4, a SpaceX supported all-civilian space mission, touts a chance for viewers to join the mission. The ad shows shots of the SpaceX astronaut uniform in space to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and is directed by Bryce Dallas Howard.
M&M’s: Come Together
A bag of M&M’s is the perfect apology for mansplaining, calling someone a “Karen,” having a gender reveal party accident or other contemporary faux pas. Dan Levy of Schitt’s Creek apologises to the M&M anthropomorphic characters that are Super Bowl mainstays and says he promises not to “eat any more of their friends”.
Squarespace: 5 to 9
The website-building and hosting company enlisted Dolly Parton herself to rewrite the lyrics of her classic ode to the working day, 9 to 5, to pay tribute to workers who work on their own businesses from “5 to 9” instead.
Uber Eats: Shameless Manipulation
The food delivery service enlists Wayne’s World actors Mike Myers and Dana Carvey — along with singer Cardi B — to promote ordering from local restaurants. It’s one of several commercials that are trying to capitalise on viewer nostalgia.
Surprises
Although most ads have been revealed in order to try to capture pre-game buzz, there will undoubtedly be some surprises on game day. Jeep, which created the hit “Groundhog’s Day” remake ad starring Bill Murray last year, will be back in the game as well. Online gig marketplace Fiverr, a first-time advertiser, has teased that its ad will feature Four Seasons Total Landscaping, the site of an ill-fated Rudy Giuliani press conference in November.
Another first-time advertiser, DoorDash, is teaming with Sesame Street to promote neighbourhood delivery. And E*Trade, famous for the talking baby ads it ran in the Super Bowl from 2008 until they “retired” in 2014, is back in the big game with an undisclosed ad.

Tim Burton Essay
About
Timothy Walter Burton is an American film director, producer, screenwriter, artist and animator who was born in Burbank California on the 25th August 1958, to mother Jean Rea Erickson and farther William Reed Burton. His mother Jean Rea Erickson was known for owning a small cat themed gift shop and his farther William Reed Burton initially worked as a minor league baseball player but later worked at Burbank Park and recreation department. Tim Burton is well known for his warped imagination on dark fantasy and horror and his unique style of which is very gothic and quirky. He has two children a daughter called Nell and a son named Billy to Helena Carter to whom he married. However, in 2014 the couple separated after 13 years of marriage.
Childhood
As a young child Burton made short films in his garden with his friends ranging from live action movies to stop motion. He would capture his films on his Super 8 mm camera. Burton spent most of his childhood painting, drawing and watching movies. He was inspired by DR Seuss, Roald Dahl and Edgar Allan Poe. He was also largely influenced with horror films of Roger Corman most of which featured Vincent Price. At the age of 13 he made his first film ‘The Island of Doctor Agor’. He was not a very academic student but did however play on the water polo team and graduate High school. After High school, he enrolled at California Institutes of arts where he studied character animation from 1976-1979. Whilst on the Animation Programme he produced two shorts ‘King and Octopus’ and ‘Celery Monster’ which were both written, directed and animated by Burton. Whilst working at California institutes of art he was noticed by Disney and offered to work as an apprentice for them in 1980, this was his first job.
 Career
His career started off by working for Disney as an animator for ‘The Fox and the Hound’ in 1981, he left within a year as he wanted to work independently but he later animated ‘The black cauldron’ for Disney in 1985. Whist working for Disney in 1982 Burton made his first short ‘Vincent’ which was a 6-minute black and white stop motion about a young boy who fantasizes that he is Vincent Price. The film was shown at the Chicago film festival and released. After producing ‘Vincent’ successfully Burton made his first live action film ‘Frankenweenie’ in 1994 this is about a young boy who tried to bring his dog back after being run over by a car. However, the film was unsuccessful as Disney fired burton as they deemed that his film was too inappropriate for young children as it was too dark and scary, this resulted in Disney losing loads of money and time. Despite the negative critics and feedback Burton received, he was noticed by Paul Reuben’s for his film ‘Vincent’. Reuben’s made Burton the director of his first full length feature film ‘Pee Wee’s big adventure’ in 1985 as he saw great potential in Burton. The film was a huge success making Burton popular and noticeable which brought upon his many other opportunities. In 1988, he directed ‘Beetlejuice’ this was a big hit and very popular in Hollywood. He was recognised by Warner brother studios in 1989 who asked him to direct ‘Batman’ which was based off a comic book series. ‘Batman’ became one of the biggest box office hits of all time, it became financially successful earning over $100 million in the first 10 days of release. In the year of 1990 Burton produced ‘Edward Scissorhands’ which was the first of many films to star Johnny Depp. The movie was nominated as his best movie to date. Not long after Burton directed the Batman Sequel ‘Batman returns’ in 1992. This starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny Devito and Christopher Walken however it was not a success because the public were hugely disappointed. In 1993 Burton produced ‘The nightmare before Christmas’ this was a stop motion film that took over 3 years to make, it was a commercial success. During this film, he worked with director Henry Selick and over 100 artists and technicians. He also produced a lot of the concept art and style for this film. A lot of his concept art was inspired by his drawings from when he was a child. In 1994, he reunited with Johnny Depp who featured in his film ‘Ed Wood’ a black and white portraiture, the film was a financial disaster as it failed to impress a large mass audience, however Martin Landau won an Oscar for it and it gradually become popular over the years. During 1996 Burton directed ‘Mars attacks’ which was very vibrant in terms of its colour pallet compared to his usual dark morbid films, it had mediocre reviews and wasn’t very popular. In 1999 Burton was praised for his art direction in his film ‘Sleepy Hollow’ starring Johnny Depp. The film was financially successful and he redeemed himself for his film ‘Mars attacks’. Two years later in 2001 he remade ‘Planet of the apes’ with Helena Carter an English actress and model, who he later entered a romantic relationship with and worked on many other films with. It is also known that Burton has a huge fear of apes, so working on this film was a big achievement for him. During 2003 he directed ‘Big Fish’ a conventional film which earned great critical praise and 4 golden globe nominations. He directed Johnny Depp in ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’ in 2005 which was rated one of the quirkiest most unique films he had ever made. He also received an Oscar Nod for the best animated feature film ‘The Corpse Bride’ a stop motion movie. In 2010, he directed Johnny Depp as the Mad hatter and Helena Carter as the Red Queen in his well-known film ‘Alice in wonderland’.
 Films
 The nightmare before Christmas
The nightmare before Christmas is a film that was produced and written by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick. It is about a skellington named Jack who has become bored of the same routine every year for Halloween, he is the king of Halloween town but wishes for something new, fun and exciting. He accidently ventures into Christmas town and is so fascinated by it that he wants to recreate it. During his attempt to recreate Christmas his Halloween themed gifts scare the children which ruins Christmas. Jack eventually realises what he has done so helps Santa fix Christmas town, they save the presents and Jack returns to being the pumpkin king of Halloween town. The film was made in 1993 it consisted of only 13 animators and over 100 trained camera operators, puppet makers, set builders and prop makers. It was the first animated Disney film to not be traditionally animated. The film was made on 24 frames meaning that for each second of film the character was posed 24 different times, this is what made the film such a time-consuming process. Also if there was a problem with an individual frame they would have to go back and re photograph the entire thing as it was done on film and not individual cell animation. The film took a week to make just 1 minute of film which made the film take over 3 years to make. There are 60 different characters which have up to 4 different duplicates for each one. Each puppet has an armature built inside of it to enable smooth movement. The sculpture department consisted of only 4 people. 400 replacement heads where used for Jacks facial expressions compared to Sally who had a replacement mask. To make jack blink replacement eyes where used that where wedged into his sockets. Gregg Olsson built a quarter scale mock-up of Halloween town to test before building the real set. The set had trapdoors and was divided into separate sections that came apart so animators could animate from beneath the set and small teams would work on individual pieces at the same time. Most of the sets required up to 30 lights to create extreme dramatic effects. “There were only 4 sculptors, who sculpted the characters in an oil based clay which was then smoothed out with alcohol so it was soft so that when it was moulded the hard mould that plastered it wouldn’t rip up the mould. Each puppet had an armature which consisted of ball and socket that enabled the movement of puppets. All the armatures were hand machined to fit perfect for each puppet. After sculpting, it went to the moulding department they then laid the steel armature in the mould and injected it with foam latex that covered the armature, it was then baked in the oven taken out of the mould and brought to fabrication who put the paint job, clothing, hair and fur which gave the puppet their full character which then would go out for animation.”
 The corpse Bride
The corpse bride is a 2005 British-American stop motion fantasy film directed by Mike Johnson and Tim Burton. It is based off an old Jewish folktale known as the finger. The film was located in Portland USA and Three mills studios London and the character designs were adapted from Tim burton’s sketches. It is set in a Victorian village staring two main characters Victor and Victoria who are betrothed to marriage due to success of money and high class. When things go terribly wrong at the wedding rehearsal victor practices his vows in the forest. When he finally gets them right Emily the corpse bride comes up from the grave and accepts his marriage proposal and takes him underground to the world of the unliving. Victor is confronted by the unliving and is concerned and anxious, he tries to escape but on his journey, realises that Emily is lovely and ends up caring for her. Putting her feelings aside Emily lets him return to the living world where he can marry Victoria and be happy. For the main characters in The Corpse Bride, a total of 300 puppets were built. The puppets included 14 individual Emily models and a dozen Victors. Corpse Bride relied on a newer technique than head replacements, this method involved puppet heads being filled with tiny gears. Miniscule keys are built to fit into the ears of the character, or in the back of its head. By inserting and twisting these, an animator can incrementally change the character’s expression.
Nominations / Awards
In 1984 Burton won an audience award for his film Vincent at Ottawa international animation festival. 6 Years later in 1990 he won The showest award at showest convention USA for director of the year. He won future film festival digital award in 2005 which he shared with mike Johnson for his film corpse bride and career golden lion award in 2007 both which were awarded at Venice film festival. In 2006 He received another award for corpse bride a BAA at the British animation award for best feature film. In 2008 Burton received an award for career achievement at the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival he also won the Houston film critic society award for best director in the film Sweeny tod the demon barber of fleet street. In 2010 he received the Winsor McCay award at Annie Awards and in 2012 and 2013 he received two awards for Frankenweenie which was nominated the best animated feature film, he also received an Italian online movie award and Los Angeles film critic association award.
Why Tim burton is a huge influence to me
Tim burton inspires me because he is a unique artist who has taken his childhood dreams and turned them into a reality. His work is influential because he worked on the corpse bride and the nightmare before Christmas both of which are stop motion and this is something I feel passionate about and want to go into. I find it fascinating how long the process takes and how much time and effort is put into his work. I love his art style as a lot of his films seem like they are based in the same world as the styles are very similar. I also like that his style is quite gothic and his choice of colour pallet as it is visually appealing to the eye and has a certain look about it. Through researching Tim Burton I have found out a lot about set design and puppet making which will help me make my stop motion 1 minute short.

Life...Liberty...Pursuit...
I don’t really know if anyone is ever going to read this. This is probably going to be the most brutally honest and most informative thing I’ve ever written about myself.  First of all, I’ll explain a few things about me:   * I’m male, also ROMANTICALLY attracted to males.  * I’m somewhere on the asexual spectrum.   * I’m a vegetarian with a tendency towards vegan if given an option.  * I consider myself part of the Goth subculture.   * I’m not religious. Atheist/Agnostic if anything. The reason I felt I needed to share these things is that where I was born...”different” is frowned upon. When I was young, there were a lot of things I kept locked away...because I didn’t know how to express them at that age...and even if I did know how, I would have been too afraid to. My family has adjusted to my “peculiarities” surprisingly well...I never would have expected that. They’ve been very accepting, so in that department...I’ve been very lucky.  Besides all of the things that make me stand out where I live...I’ve always felt unusual. Out of place. Like I don’t belong. I’ve had friends...and I’m a friendly person. I’ve been a cashier for a combined total of 5 years...and while it’s helped me a lot socially, it’s done nothing for my sense of self...or belonging. In order to be good at socializing, and get along with absolutely everyone I meet...I have to hide a major portion of myself. So I quickly figured out that fake smiles are the way to go. As long as everyone else is happy, why does how I feel matter, right? It doesn’t matter that I feel trapped. As long as every single customer has a good, positive experience on the surface...why does what’s inside me matter?  I’m very thankful for the help I’ve had in getting every job I’ve had so far...but something else I need to mention for all of this to hopefully make some sense at all to someone: I was raised by someone who I suspect has Borderline Personality Disorder. I don’t have anything against her or blame her for anything, I know it couldn’t be helped. Due to a lack of willpower...and no sense of boundaries...I let myself be powerless. I sacrifice my own will for the sake of others. No matter what. It’s like I’m a real life version of Ella Enchanted (a fantasy movie I like). I have morals...and I have standards...but sometimes even that doesn’t matter. I can’t say “No”. I can’t say “I’m doing something at the moment, maybe later.” I can’t say “I’m busy”. I can’t say “I have plans.” So I get taken advantage of in a lot of situations.  Especially in work situations. Managers and bosses LOOK for people like me because we do everything we’re told without question or complaint. Nevermind what’s going on inside us. What matters is that we’re willing slaves.  I can explain at least some of the reasons I’m different. I’ve thought about it a lot. I relate to the Goth subculture mostly because of the aesthetic and the music. I grew up with black and white horror movies, because that’s what my grandmother watched. My dad considers himself a “Redneck Goth” (yes, that does actually exist). So I also grew up with Tim Burton movies. My grandmother introduced me to Edward Scissorhands and I always related to him. I related to Lydia in Beetlejuice. I related to “darker” Disney characters. Background characters in shows I liked. Etc. I remember when we read Edgar Allen Poe in class. Everyone else seemed to be either creeped out or bored...but I felt a connection to it. I’ve always loved Alice in Wonderland, too...in any form.  I love nonsense...because for a brief moment, it’s a distraction from the harshness of reality. Nonsense and confusion distract you, even if only for a moment, from what’s really going on around you. Like Fantasy (my favorite genre)...it’s an escape. In reality, I’m powerless...because I make myself powerless...but I don’t know how to stop it. Sure, I COULD walk up to my boss and quote my favorite movie (Jim Henson’s Labyrinth). “You have NO power over me!”...but this doesn’t work as well in reality as it does in fantasy. No one would fly away. I’d be stuck to finish the very real confrontation..and very likely, I’d be fired and have no way to pay for food, rent, and bills. I understand necessity. I get it. “That’s how it works.” “How it works” just happens to rip my soul apart. My whole life...all I’ve known is self inflicted servitude. I’d “tone it down” or “try to look/be normal”. I’ve had to sever myself from who I truly am just so everyone else is happy.  In a perfect world, we should have control over our own bodies...including our external image, right?  ...I feel like my body isn’t even mine. In an effort to have SOME control over myself...I’ve dyed my hair blue-purple...and I loved it. I made a decision and stuck with it. It was mine. MY hair. My color. My choice. MY BODY.  I understand that in some states, countries, etc...hair color isn’t a big deal. Where I live, you can be fired for having “unnatural hair colors”. Sure. I COULD be like every other Goth-inclined person and “Paint it black” (my hair)...but that’s not the point. The point is MY power isn’t my own. I have no power. The color I chose is a “Bad/unacceptable” color. I’ve had people say “It’s just hair. It’s not a big deal.” That’s not even the point. It’s not actually about my hair at all. It’s about POWER. Employers feel the need to tell us how to act, dress, etc. I get it. We have to be a certain way for customers. Uniforms, while I severely dislike the concept, I understand. How else would a customer know how to find a worker? Yes. I get it...but what’s wrong with CUSTOMIZATION?...I know customers (and people in general) can be horrible. “I don’t want to shop where that purple haired freak works!”...but that’s THEIR problem...I understand as a business/corporation/etc...it’s necessary to pull in as much business as possible from as many people as possible...but it’s cruel to stifle someone’s soul simply because you have the power to do so...and even profit from that cruelty.  I’ve been stifled long enough. If I could fight without losing my job, apartment, ability to buy food and water (which are NECESSARY TO LIVE)...I would. So, yes. It feels like slavery to me. I’m getting “paid”, sure. Paid JUST enough to cover the previously mentioned food, bills, rent, etc. Again, things that are NECESSARY. So I don’t even have a life at all. I’m just stuck being everyone else’s toy. I’m “Just part of the merchandise”.  If I can ever develop enough will power to start practicing an instrument (probably Keyboard and vocals...)...I’ve had plans to start a musical project for years. I have so many ideas...so many thoughts...so much creativity and imagination...and it’s all just rotting away...because that’s “Just how it works”.
