According to the D&D game rules, clerics are only allowed to use blunt weapons because they are forbidden to shed blood. This practice was followed during part of the Middle Ages, but not throughout.

Clerics were perhaps limited to blunt weapons because the class was created with medieval Catholicism in mind, and to reduce the cleric's effectiveness in melee; in the Greyhawk supplement, the best one-handed weapon a cleric can use is a mace, which does 1-6 points of damage on man-sized opponents, but fighters can use a sword for 1-8 points. The difference in damage helped separate their fighting ability at low levels -- at higher levels, the cleric is on a less effective combat table than the fighter, and the weapons limitation then seems redundant. In the Advanced D&D books, the blunt-weapon rule is retained, even though in AD&D a mace is about as good as a longsword, and no form of Christianity is mentioned in the Deities & Demigods Cyclopedia. The rule should be thrown out. At the very least, a cleric should be able to use the weapon sacred to his god. Is it also not more proper to have clerics use weapons traditional to their culture?

This is a beautiful sword. I have a few swords, daggers, fixed blade hunting knives and pocket folders. Okay, okay, yes I have more than a few.

Re: cutoff for dagger/knife vs short sword, 1d4 vs 1d6.

1. Blade longer than an ell (length between elbow and middle finger).

2. Handle type and pommel (there used to be separate guilds for knives and sword makers, see langes messers).

3. Overall function.

That being said, a kuhukuri should be a d6, or a d2+3. Frankly, if you can behead someone with it, give it a sword rating.

All excellent points, my post was really just kinda about the arbitrary nature of weapon classification in real life and how it carries over to TTRPGs (often in an exaggerated way). It wasn't really meant to be that deep but I like your response. See linked post below for context.

And I agree that a khukri should do a d6 of damage.

in the majority of modern historical fencing, people will use dull and flexible blades that slide and bounce off each other in very satisfying ways while also being safe and sane. it’s fun and I love it you should try it.

however if your were to duel someone with two fully sharpened steel blades, the edges actually bite into each other when they meet. They stick, they snag. They grab and fold around each other. You can sometimes pull your opponent toward you using only the friction of your edges. This also only really works if both of you throw a committed cut. If you both attack each other with deadly weapons in a way that is meant to do the most damage possible. I guess what i’m saying is, the intimacy and tactile freakshow of sharp edges meeting at high speeds will someday be enough for me to risk my life over.
