International Klein Blue, does it ring a bell? Three trends that mark European performances of the 20th century: mythologisation of the artists by themselves, politicisation of art, and sanctification of a human body in the world where two devastating world wars left nothing sacred. This post will cover the contribution of the French artist Yves Klein (told you, our lecturer managed to cover A LOT). 

Yves Klein Sitting at a beach with his friends, Yves Klein claimed the sky to be his own - which later will turn out to be a life-long obsession. He created his own colour  - the International Klein Blue (IKB) - that he would later use to draw his monochrome paintings. He also used gold and pink for his monochromes like in his Ex-Voto dedicated to Saint Rita de Cascia (1961) where blue symbolises God, gold symbolises the Father, and pink symbolises the Holy Spirit (see below).

He used naked models as brushes to create the Anthropometries - engaging the models with the work in a process of co-creation. The Anthropometries signigy both the paintings and the processes of creation - the most famous one that took place in the  Galérie International d'Art Contemporain in 1960.

On a clear night in March at ten pm sharp a crowd of one hundred people, all dressed in black tie attire, came to the Galerie International d'Art Contemporain in Paris. The event was the first conceptual piece to be shown at this gallery by their new artist Mr. Yves Klein. The gallery was one of the finest in Paris.      Mr. Klein in a black dinner jacket proceeded to conduct a ten piece orchestra in his personal composition of The Monotone Symphony, which he had written in 1949. This symphony consisted of one note.       Three models appeared, all with very beautiful naked bodies. They were then conducted as was the full orchestra by Mr. Klein. The music began. The models then rolled themselves in the blue paint that had been placed on giant pieces of artist paper - the paper had been carefully placed on one side of the galleries' wall and floor area - opposite the full orchestra. Everything was composed so breathtakingly beautifully. The spectacle was surely a metaphysical and spiritual event for all. This went on for twenty minutes. When the symphony stopped it was followed by a strict twenty minutes of silence, in which everyone in the room willingly froze themselves in their own private meditation space.       At the end of Yves' piece everyone in the audience was fully aware they had been in the presence of a genius at work, the piece was a huge success! Mr. Klein triumphed. It would be his greatest moment in art history, a total success.       The spectacle had unquestionable poetic beauty, and Mr. Kleins' last words that night were, "THE MYTH IS IN ART".

“Le saut dans le vide” is a performance of a ‘leap into the void’ captured in a picture. Thanks to photo manipulations it looks as if the artist was about to take off from the wall and pursue the immaterial.

The “saut dans le vide”, a now iconic performance, was executed on October 19 on Rue Gentil-Bernard in Fontenay-aux-Roses, a suburb south-west of Paris where the artist regularly trained in judo. Yves Klein leaps from a pillar at the entrance of a pavilion, his face turned towards the sky, his arms crossed. Far from falling, the artist takes off. The street is empty, except for a cyclist passing by in the bottom right of the photograph. The fact that a man is hanging mid-air does not cause him to stop or even turn his head.

Existe una fuerte demanda de litio y Chile tiene  importantes ventajas en la producción. Pero  siguen con la misma trampa regulatoria que impide que ingresen los competidores que ofrezcan la mejor tecnología, tanto en eficiencia y sustentabilidad, y la mayor rapidez de extracción.

¿Cuál es el secreto  para tener un proyecto económico fructífero que entregue buenas rentas? Cualquier emprendedor exitoso te diría que son tres: que haya demanda, poseer ventajas comparativas y rapidez.

En la industria del litio, Chile tiene asegurada las dos primeras. La demanda ha crecido fuertemente por su uso en baterías, fundamentales para combatir el cambio climático. Según proyecciones de Cochilco, la demanda mundial se cuadruplicará para el 2035. Respecto de las ventajas comparativas, Chile tiene importantes reservas y cuenta con las condiciones más baratas de extracción.

Durante el boom de precios de los últimos años hemos perdido el liderazgo mundial ante Australia y se proyecta que Argentina la superará este año. Y es que a Chile le falta el tercer ingrediente clave para cualquier proyecto: rapidez.

La razón del rezago en el litio es clara: su regulación establece que la entrada de nuevos productores dependa exclusivamente de la voluntad del Gobierno de turno, impidiendo el ingreso de manera competitiva, es el favoritismo empresarial.

El litio, a diferencia del resto de los minerales, no es concesible. Solo puede ser explorado y explotado directamente por el Estado y sus empresas, y si bien el Estado puede entregar contratos de operación que permiten la participación de privados, no tiene ninguna obligación de hacerlo ni tampoco de asignarlos a través de una licitación competitiva.

La Estrategia Nacional del Litio anunciada en abril 2023, en lugar de corregir este tope regulatorio, mantiene la absoluta discrecionalidad del Gobierno en la producción del 90% del litio.

La estrategia busca involucrar al Estado en todo el ciclo productivo a través de alianzas público-privadas.

La entrada de privados depende de varias definiciones pendientes del Gobierno: ¿Cuáles serán las condiciones bajo las cuáles los privados podrán actuar? ¿Cuáles serán las implicancias de esta asociación público-privada? ¿Ceder en el control de la gestión? ¿Entregar el 50 + 1% de utilidades? ¿La licitación de CEOL de exploración será bajo condiciones competitivas?

Una alternativa para terminar con este amarre legislativo es normalizar el estatus del litio y volverlo concesible como todos los otros elementos, lo que otorga derechos de propiedad transferibles, atrayendo inversión nacional y extranjera debido a la certeza jurídica que ofrece.

Una segunda vía para aprovechar la riqueza del litio es la licitación de contratos de operación bajo un esquema abierto y competitivo, y terminar con la entrega discrecional por parte del Gobierno de turno.

That "even if you're writing a non-canon pairing in fanfiction, you have to respect that these characters will probably still care on a basic level about their original love interest" post was inspired by a lot of things. But foremost inspired by any "Fullmetal Alchemist" fanfiction that tries to convince me that Edward Elric doesn't actually like Winry Rockbell at all.

Like, uh, no. Ed would die for Winry, so jot that down. Even if you're writing an AU where one or both of them are gay, which is fun and fine, Ed and Winry are ride or die for each other. They've known each other for so long. They trust each other so much. When they're arguing with each other or annoying the other, it's because THEY CARE. This is basic characterization for them.

I was amusing myself by thinking about an AU in which Ed's romantic interest is someone like Ling Yao, in which there's some dangerous situation where Ed has to choose between saving Winry (his sister figure in this AU) and saving Ling. I was immediately like, "Oh, he would FOR SURE pick Winry in most scenarios. Sorry, Ling." Which would suck for Ed, because he hates failing to save anyone, but is also funny to think about with Ling specifically, because I think that Ling would actually respect this decision more.

Unlike Winry, Ling is a combatant with bodyguards, and so can be trusted to handle himself in dangerous situations. (Which obviously does not make Ling a BETTER love interest for Ed than Winry, Winry doesn't need to be good at fighting, it's just a different skillset.) Ling is also a leader, someone who wants to be an emperor someday, and I think he has opinions on loyalty. Despite feeling grateful to be saved, I think Ling might think quite poorly of Ed choosing him (a relative stranger, even if he is a legit snack) over Winry (functionally a member of Ed's family / clan, a skilled specialist who is necessary to Ed's own combat capabilities), because Ed sure as shit wouldn't be considering future political advantages with Xing here, so it would be choosing a new love over family / a loyal friend. Depending on the scenario (it all depends on the specific situation for all of these cases), I also think that Ling might choose to save someone like Lan Fan or even Mei Chang over Ed in a lot of situations, especially because Ed would HATE IT SO MUCH if Ling knowingly sacrificed anyone for his sake.

Non-canon pairings and their AUs are interesting to me partially for how they interact with the existing canonical relationships and how they negotiate with canonical motivations. For some characters, romantic relationships are just not as important as familial ones or their own goals. Obviously, for Edward Elric, (depending on the specific situation at hand, of course) he's going to choose Alphonse over nearly anyone else.

An Italian artist who tried to strip art of its usual media - canvas.

First of all, he declared a human body an art object by introducing the Basi magiche (Magical bases) - pedestals where anyone can become a work of art, a topic that he further explored in his 1961 performance Sculture viventi (Living sculptures), in which he signed the plinth and the body of real life models posing as sculptures. He also issued his Certificati d’autenticità (Declarations of Authenticity), on which he stated that the recepient “has been signed by my hand and therefore has to be considered as an authentic work of art for all intents and purposes as of the date below.”

He went on to declare the Earth an object of art as well - one of his works include a metal plinth with inscription 'The Base Of The World, Homage To Galileo' making reference to the famous saying.

Gilbert and George

An Italian-British artistic duo that started with The Singing Sculpture performance in 1969 and 1970 - they covered their faces and hands with golden powder and stood on the table singing all day long along to the Underneath the Arches by Flanagan an Allen.

They considered themselves to be living sculptures and featured in most of their works, including the photo series The Pictures,  the Jack Freak Pictures and recently the New Normal Pictures - a series that they had started before the pandemic and that features London in a phantasmagoric way.
