In de Kazerne in Eindhoven hebben de partners en vrienden van GLOW een eerste indruk gekregen van de nieuwe route van GLOW 2024. Met als thema ‘The Stream’ gaat het internationale lichtkunstfestival dit jaar op 9 november van start. Ronald Ramakers, directeur van GLOW, presenteerde verschillende innovaties van GLOW 2024 zoals de mobiele studio van Studio040 op de Markt van waaruit iedere dag live verslag wordt gedaan tijdens GLOW 2024. Onder de aanwezigen was ook Stijn Steenbakkers (wethouder van Brainport, economie, onderwijs, KnoopXL en Eindhoven-Noordwest), die het economische en sociale belang van GLOW voor de Brainport regio onderstreepte. In 2023 liet GLOW onderzoek doen naar de sociale impact op de bezoekers. Bezoekers waardeerden het evenement gemiddeld met een 8, waar dat in 2022 nog een 7,6 was. Van de bezoekers die aangaven GLOW meer dan drie keer te bezoeken, voelt 58% dat GLOW hen meer verbindt met de regio. Maar liefst 60% zegt zich door GLOW meer verbonden te voelen met Eindhoven. Ronald Ramakers: “Zowel in de voorbereiding als tijdens het lichtkunstfestival brengen we bedrijven, organisaties, studenten en kunstenaars samen in onze GLOW Labs. Lichtkunstwerken Samen vertalen ze de verhalen uit de stad en de regio in innovatieve lichtkunstwerken. Wij zijn hierin uniek, nergens anders ter wereld verbindt een festival groepen mensen al zo in de voorbereidende fase. Daarom krijgt GLOW vanuit steden over de hele wereld verzoeken om mee te kijken hoe Eindhoven dit weet te realiseren. Het is fantastisch om te zien dat onderzoek nu ook uitwijst dat GLOW 2024 zich niet alleen vertaalt in een financiële bijdrage voor de stad en de regio, maar ook een enorme sociale impact heeft. Licht brengt mensen in het hart samen.” De route van GLOW 2024 Ramakers nam de genodigden mee op een digitale tour langs de voorlopige route, met speciale aandacht voor een aantal bijzondere locaties. De route van dit jaar loopt vanaf de Markt richting de Bergen en het Wilhelminaplein naar de Ventoselaan en het Victoria Park. Van daaruit wandelt men richting het 18 Septemberplein door de Piazza naar de Fellenoord. Daar wordt doorgestoken richting het TU-terrein om vervolgens via de Silly Walk tunnel naar de Effenaar te lopen, de Dommelstraat in te slaan en tenslotte via de Raiffeisenstraat door de Heuvel terug naar de Markt te komen. De route is met ca. 5 km ongeveer net zo lang als in 2023. Eén van de hoogtepunten van de komende editie is het kinderproject dat te zien zal zijn in het Rabobank kantoor aan de Fellenoord. Daarnaast zal er ook dit jaar GLOW in de regio zijn. Welke omliggende gemeenten hier definitief aan mee doen, wordt later duidelijk. Unieke samenwerking In het kader van 80 jaar bevrijding van Eindhoven, vindt er een unieke samenwerking plaats tussen GLOW en de Lichtjesroute in de Willemstraat. Ook zal er een zeer bijzonder en uitbundig werk van de Franse kunstenares Cindy Lo te zien zijn op het Wilhelminaplein. Lo was eerder op GLOW te zien, en wel in 2022 met de kleurrijke projectie op Villa Dommelhoef. Lo creëert voor 2024 een poëtisch lichtkunstwerk, gebaseerd op een gedicht van K. Michel, dat gaat over het ontstaan van nieuw landschap te midden van chaos. Elke dag live uitzending vanaf GLOW Na het presenteren van de route en de highlights, nam Mike Weerts de aanwezigen mee in een nieuw initiatief voor GLOW 2024. In samenwerking met Studio040 zal er dagelijks vanuit een mobiele studio op de Markt live verslag gedaan worden van het festival met interviews met bezoekers, kunstenaars en bijzondere gasten. Mike Weerts, directeur en bestuurder van Studio040 lichtte toe: “Vorig jaar hebben we voor het eerst een aantal portretten geschoten van Eindhovenaren die GLOW 2024 bezoeken. Dat is heel goed bevallen. We streven samen met GLOW hetzelfde doel na: verhalen uit de stad optekenen om zo mensen te verbinden. Met dit idee kunnen we al die verhalen met mensen op de route én in heel de regio delen.”

Pictured below is Big Black, of course. In general, I don't like having to put pictures here of musicians who have died, and especially not when they are heroes who helped define my musical tastes. Steve Albini was one of those guys. I was introduced to Big Black in the eighties when I was listening to the legendary radio show Domino, presented by Luc Janssen. It was an immediate match. My first visit to Pukkelpop was one year too late to see Big Black Live (they played the festival in 1987, my first visit was in 1988), but later when I saw Shellac for the first time at De Effenaar in Eindhoven I was pretty much blown away. Seen Shellac several times throughout the years, I was also at the All Tomorrows Parties festival curated by the band (here they played every day as first band) - legendary times. And of course all the records that Albini engineered. Contrary to what rumor says, they weren't all good, but still, a lot of them were pretty good and there's of course some all time classics. Steve Albini died at the age of 61 which is just so unfair. People just shouldn't die like that, all of a sudden. A huge blow for all of us underground music lovers, but even more for his family, friends and bandmates. There's a new Shellac album out right now. They made six albums in thirty years.
