Good afternoon Saki,

I come to you purely out of scientific curiosity regarding a query related to the current medical world. As you know, originating from a world one hundred years in the past has meant that my knowledge in current technolgical and social advancement is...limited and often somewhat outdated. Tulin is often quick to scold me for not always being up to date with social acceptabilities in the current climate - which I am trying to relearn.

Obviously it is of utterly no relevance to me personally, the very icon of what a Rito man should be. However I was merely curious, on behalf of an acquaintance. I've heard that it's now rather more socially acceptable now than back in my time if a Rito were to be born with the destiny of an egglayer but instead they should far more strongly identify with the lifestyle of one who perhaps didn't lay eggs. And that there's now medicine - hormones and whatnot that one can take that would even stop the egg laying process and cause their body to change and behave in a more typically masculine fashion?

Not that I would ever have nessessity for anything of the sort, as an entirely naturally produced, testosterone fueled warrior man. Of course.

...but purely out of curiosity what does that process entail? For someone else, of course. What would one need to supply in order to procure such a treatment, if they were to do it entirely anonymously? Do we offer that sort of thing in the Village?

We do have pills of concentrated testosterone and estrogen for those who transition. If a Rito hatched female took the testosterone pills they would develop a deeper voice, the color of their feathers will become more vibrant, as well as growing more of them on the head and groin.

If the same Rito were to come to the clinic and see a doctor about a surgery to medically switch sexes it would be as if they were male from birth.

The practice is actually several hundred years old, way back when more female rito were being born than male so they switched the hatchling's sex and made them keep up with taking a monthly pill.

For example, if I were to get the surgery and take the pill I'd be biologically male in a month. Capable of reproduction and all.

Miscellaneous animals of my dnd setting.

Yakybara show up a lot in my old sketches from before the campaign started, but they were never actually named (unless they had a name in a conlang I made up and forgot haha). A lot of my worldbuilding projects start with drawings or creature designs.

Purpure Squirrels are basically just Indian giant squirrels with a different pattern. I saw a picture of them once and the concept of purple squirrel immediately cemented itself as A Thing™ in my world.

Eekees are shapechangers that can shift between the form of a silver-furred monkey with horns and a that of a similar-looking eagle. They live in small groups of 4-12 individuals, and they are typically found in forests and near steep cliffs where they nest and hunt. They are warm-blooded, omnivorous egglayers.

Narashi cats are medium-sized wild cats similar to caracals, but with patterns and elements borrowed from like every cat ever. They get their name from their habitat, the Narashi desert. They are also called sock paw cats.

Winter singers are birds native to the Land of Winter in the Feywild, and they serve an archfey called Lady Wintersong as her spies and messengers to her warlocks. The females are nearly indistinguishable from blackbirds, while the males have a more distinct look with long, oddly-shaped, green tail feathers.

Giant spitter lizards, misleadingly also called rainbow dragons (they are not dragons in the fantasy sense of the word), are large marine reptiles that can spew blobs of acid. Their main hunting strategies include trapping their aquatic prey on land and holding their land-dwelling prey underwater. They rarely spew acid when hunting, but will do so to secure a large kill or when they feel threatened.

Ha, Drampa! Yes, we had one of those at the Sanctuary once actually! We got a call letting us know one had started spending a lot of time hanging around the Pokemon Nursery on Route 5, which was worrying behaviour for multiple reasons: one, that's a large powerful wild Dragon type making a home where there are a lot of young trainers and young Pokemon, neither of which are best known for common sense; two, Drampa usually prefer to live in remoter areas where there's not nearly so much traffic, so this could indicate illness or other distress; and three, Drampa love children- human children especially but young Pokemon as well- and have been occasionally known to take them into their care without much attention paid to what the parents think about that! So as you can expect, the staff at the Nursery were just a little freaked out!

Well, me and my guys rolled up all ready to battle and catch this big fluffy menace if it came to that, but what we found was a little thing that was just a youngster her own self! Well, I say little thing, she was very big for her age, and considering Drampa are on average about three metres long, that's saying something. She was very easily persuaded into the van without having to be battled or caught, and was an absolute star during her medical checkup, which revealed nothing but a minor sprain to her left front leg that would have cleared up by itself shortly in any case. We gave it a little help, and she stayed at the Sanctuary for a few months getting pampered, and then one day she just... left! Haven't seen her since. I do wonder somehow how she's getting on, but with Drampa, them disappearing into the wilderness without trace is the good ending most of the time!

We think what happened was that she aged out of being cared for by her parent, left to find her own territory, got herself hurt, and being scared and confused ended up looking for somewhere with other young Pokemon that she felt more at home with. She just needed a bit of care and comfort before she felt brave enough to go back out and find herself a proper home!

Pokemon Fun Facts!

Many people consider Dragon types to be anti-social, or at least not prone to living in groups. And most of them are- with the notable exception of the Goomy line!

The most common way to find a wild Goomy is squished in a hole with a whole bunch of other Goomy! Being in a big pile like that allows them to share the moisture and mucus that is critical to their survival, and also makes them much less appealing to opportunistic predators- since a huge gross slimy pile of Goomy is not the most appetising meal to most! And they don’t lose that piling instinct when they evolve into Sliggoo either, which can cause a few problems as Sliggoo slime is considerably more caustic, and Sliggoo are- with the best will in the world- extremely stupid! They will try to form piles with anything- their trainer, other Pokemon of almost any species, inanimate objects, you name it.

Goodra, on the other hand, are both smarter and more territorial, and will therefore form groups of other Pokemon to take care of on purpose. They are also capable of not melting holes through everything they touch- which is doubly lucky since they don’t lose the piling instinct either!

Haha, good question! I went through my Letterboxd and picked out a few:

-Room (2015)

Not to be confused with Tommy Wiseau's masterpiece "The Room." I remember hearing so much buzz about this movie when it was new, and when I finally watched it I thought it was kind of just a weird, Oscar baity, poorly paced mess?

-The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

This has like a 4.0 star rating on Letterboxd or something? But I found this movie extremely stupid when I watched it again recently. Came off like a corny extended Wells Fargo commercial with a really phony message and questionable morals/Conservative propaganda behind it

-American Psycho (2000)

Ok, parts of it ARE pretty iconic and entertaining, and Christian Bale's performance is great. But it kind of falls apart as a narrative after a bit, and overall I don't think it does a super amazing job of keeping a consistent tone / saying whatever it's trying to say. Still love me some Patrick Bateman memes!

-Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

One of Stanley Kubrick's most pretentious, blandly nihilistic, offensively misogynistic, least enjoyable outings for me. Found it incredibly boring to watch despite how lurid the subject matter is supposed to be

It DOES have some amazing visuals and vibes at times, but in my opinion it's pretty pretentious and trying too hard to seem deeper than it is. I also don't think it was incredibly necessary to include an actual onscreen slaughter of a buffalo in it, either 😪 really turned me off from wanting to finish watching the whole thing

your “coffee machine” dispenses you a beverage, which definitely isn’t coffee but tastes reasonably like it, from an oddly phallic appendage. you try not to think about it too much

you have to go out to the garden to pick produce to make breakfast. the agridome should be sealed, but it never hurts to be careful. your filtration system skitters up your outstretched arm, hooking its little legs behind your head and spooling the long tendrils that recycle your breath and pull toxins from the air into your throat, and it shudders with a hint of arousal as you give the warm, thick appendages a quick suck. most people have to train their throats to not gag on their filters, but you took naturally to it… for some reason

the plants curl around your hand seductively as you pick the savory fruits off, soft leaves leaning into you and wrapping around your fingers, stroking up and down and wishing you gave them something else to hold…

next is protein. you let yourself into the egglayers’ enclosure and immediately get swarmed by the small feathery quadrupeds, jumping all over you and trying to be seductive in the hopes you have a spare minute. one particularly bold one even lands on your hand, gently biting your wrist and humping your fingers- until your toxscrubber snarls at it. she’s been getting really possessive lately, ever since she figured out what your tongue does

you’re chopping up vegetables for the skillet to pair with eggs, when the knife slips and nails your hand pretty bad. you yelp, and a medibug skitters across the counter from her terrarium. medibugs are fantastic, and you lay your hand, about her same size, on the counter for her to fix. one quick sting and the local anesthetic in her venom hits immediately, and she goes to work carefully stitching up your hand with a fiber the same thickness as spider silk and twice as strong, before weaving a special sticky patch to glue over it until you’re healed. as thanks, she climbs your arm and perches on your face, and you stroke her carapace as her ovipositor brushes your lips

your toxscrubber paws at you. her scales are turning orange - you need to change the filter in your air supply, but that can wait a few more minutes. your breakfast is almost ready, and she’s nosing eagerly at your crotch and trying to undo the zipper with her fangs

Okay, poking at the concept, building off it. Ossy variant that thanks to using DNA absorption for reproduction doesn't really have a concept of 'sires'. I mean, Kevin is out here absorbing wood and shit, we see Aggregor absorb a fucker dead even before killing the Andromeda Five, would make sense to do a version that doesn't have any real care given to what may or may not have gone into any one kid. Or at least not caring aside from what benefit can be gleaned from it. Including the ability to better parasitize.

We see that Devin was involved so likely they're not obligate brood parasites. So, as said before, sometimes a fucker passes their eggs off to somebody else. I can see them originally having evolved doing this among their own and closely related species, then expanding out as they interacted with more species...

So what leads to parasitism? Is it a 'some fuckers are naturally inclined to it' thing? An age thing, with younger or older fuckers more likely to engage in the behavior than the other way around? Influenced by outside circumstances, like food availability or population size? Or maybe dam health, with dams in poor health more likely to slip eggs into another nest? That last one would especially make sense if we keep the headcanon that Ossys likely gain their growing energy from actual energy drawn from around them while in the egg, but also feels off...

Dams prioritize parasitizing other Osmosians, followed by similar species, and ending with whatever sapient species they've most absorbed from, in the interest of decreasing the risk of rejection. Other egglayers are preferred, for obvious reasons...

Okay, egglaying species are preferred if parasitism is occurring at the egg stage- prompt for this behavior undecided- but non-egglayers can be utilized if the chick(s) have already hatched- behavior prompt weakness or illness often as a result of nesting. So an Osmosian may attempt to hatch out their own clutch and be left in a bad way by it, leading them to basically doorstep baby any resulting hatchlings to increase all their survival odds.

Under non-parasitic conditions nesting dams are cared for by family and friends, who may also be parasitizing the nest themselves at the same time. Parasitizing rates higher when there's a dearth of friends and family available. Depending on the dam and circumstances egg-stage parasitism may involve the eating of one or more eggs in an existing nest... Clutches normally spread out among various 'parents'.

'Mafia' behavior- wherein the parent visits repeatedly to check on their egg/young and causes trouble should they be rejected/not cared for- differs bases on what species are being parasitized. Among other Osmosians? Rare. Among species that have been heavily absorbed from? Common.

Kinda want there to not be a moral conflict between the two reproductive styles, at least as far as Osmosians are concerned... Possibly they occur at similar rates? Like, among Osmosians themselves you probably would never even learn you weren't the spawn of the parent that raised you...

Species primarily is brood parasitic, though all individuals are to some degree liable to engage in the behavior, with about a third of the population being more prone than not to raise their own clutches. Brood parasitism is seen as the norm, and responsible behavior when one can't or isn't inclined to raise their own young. A large 'clutch' is seen as a mark of pride and status among those tending nests, as it's a direct example of how well held they are within their group.

'Mafia' behavior is less a matter of parental care and more a result of low reproductive success rates and a correlating how value of children- a dam will regularly check on and mentor their surviving children, avenge those rejected or mistreated, and remove threats that appear in the area, but the same can be said of any Osmosian who comes across a chick being raised by non-Ossys.

Whether the raising-parents of a hatchling know they're raising an Osmosian can vary depending, again, on dam and circumstances- it's polite but also circumstances sometimes and some fuckers just don't care or even think about it- but hatchlings themselves are typically informed at a young age either way. This both prevents issues involving a lack of understanding of where their powers come from and struggles with their alien mindset and instincts, as well as allowing them to be raised with at least some access to Osmosian culture.

Offspring appearance and powers can vary widely base on absorbed species, but most are primarily Osmosian by blood as most Osmosians grow up around their own kind and spend their infancy absorbing energy and DNA from their 'parent' and 'siblings', not even getting into purposefully absorbing from other Osmosians as an adult.

While for the most part Osmosians are still to some degree or another hybridized with other species- even if it's just to a very minor degree- culturally all Osmosians are considered Ossys and Ossys only. When damn near everybody is hybridized with something- be it person, animal, or vegetable- anything but the main kinda stops mattering.

It's been used before for them in ages passed but for some reason my brain just will not leave the concept of cuckoo behavior in Ossys. Is Circling the concept, sometimes a fucker just passes off their eggs to somebody else to do the caring. Gives an extra edge to why the fuck they have the DNA and shapeshifting shit going on, allows for less 'risky' breeding and in the case of brood parasitism lets you have babies less likely to get rejected.
