So... yeah. They can merge for they are very simple organisms (plasmoids).

And while for Internet sticks merging can be dangerous - if they spend too much time merged, their innards and magic (even if they have little to no magical potential) meld into one, making two separated sticks into a creature with two cores; for Animated stickmen (or Hollowheads) it is hard. They mostly consist of magic and are active users of it (staring at you, Second) so they have a greater control over it and are more natural. Also, Hollowheads don't have cores - their cytoplasm is much thicker and membranes are almost impenetrable.

Note: fusions can happen between more than two sticks, but they are difficult to both perform and sustain, they lack stability and the new self is in constant pain.

So for Animated sticks merging is the question of syncing their flows and entering the state of mutual acceptance. Their mind stays two, but they enter a slow dance of balance that creates the third self - "us" of the two. It has consciousness and understanding of itself as two combined. It exists only in the fusion and proactively reacts to whatever its parts are doing.

In a way, fusion is a long magic exchange between two.

In calm state it's collected and whole, either being a rough merge of the components' personalities and/or reflexes or a whole new person, having only the childish wonder and some critical memories of both of the sticks. TCL likes being, just being in general. They presumably formed their personality from little bits of both TDL's and TCO's minds. They don't belong to Alan but aren't that different from a usual hollowhead. TCL has high stability and can endure the pain of Dark getting fascinated over a sunset from bird flight's height or enraged by some rando. They can channel all the excessive emotions of the parts into their own. For a short while after the first TCO's and TDL's merge they had halves of their hair swapped, exchanging some powers too. After that they had to force a mana exchange (Dark almost caused a local cataclysm while trying to go on a flight)

Note: TCL most likely uses a different name, like Cataclysm or Hazard. TCL is just a placeholder.

Usually, after the sticks divide, for a short while (while there is mana that didn't divide properly) they can hear their combined self in half-conscious space or have bits of other's memories. As hollowheads keep all the info throughout their whole body (okay im voting for the primitive colony structure, lis can't continue stating that they are unicellular with this stuff going on)

last time I did 3 hatchlings and a gabbro so this time I’ll do 3 gabbros and a hatchling. pre, during, and post loops, and something random

gabbro pre loops was probably an effective and reliable hearthian for when work needed to get done, not as non-working as they can be depicted in other fics. Not necessarily proactive, though, and usually work gets done at their own pace (we can see this with the statue retrieval they haven’t done as of the loops). Friendly, and outgoing to an extent, but not energetic. They have particular interests, namely quantum mechanics, art, and quantum art, and it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to find gabbro relaxing or working on something somewhere completely random on timber hearth. Observatory, tree platforms, medical or mess cabins, people’s rooms, the various groves around timber hearth. And while they may not have been the first hearthian to use it, they love their space weed

during the loops, they got comfortable. Why keep up any sort of pace or work when a) nothing lasts more than 22hrs and b) there are no real consequences to not? So they relaxed, got into their habits, went with the flow of everything. They probably would have been forced by the hatchling to fly with them a few times, but otherwise they just let it be. After all, it would all be there tomorrow, right? But when it became clear that the universe was dead and that Really nothing mattered anymore, they just felt a cosmic weighted blanket cover them, or maybe like they sunk to the bottom of giants deep. In either case, they were not gonna leave that hammock for anything (except to go with to the Eye)

post loops, gabbro’s internally a mess, but won’t let it show. They intentionally disregard their needs (physical and mental) and emotions because they don’t understand them. There was never a need to figure anything out during the loops. While this was fine when they had normal problems, like getting upset by something chert says and forgetting to eat now and then, they aren’t really doing too hot with their current problems, like getting upset because they have any company other than the hatchling and forgetting to eat All The Time. But they try so hard to keep up the airs that they’re just going with the flow, that they’ve got an understanding on how they feel. They’ll budge with the hatchling once in a blue moon, and nobody else. But with their increased drug use, continued absence from hearthian life, and complete disregard for OWV work, it’s clear to everyone that something is going on

The hatchling never figured out what instrument speaks to them, and so never really found an instrument of their own. They can get by on different simpler instruments, having tried so many out with gneiss over the years, but nothing to the extent of others (plays into themes of identity I want to use the hatchling for. Why might I still call them the hatchling?). Voice and singing fine as well, but that’s a thing that everyone in the village does. post loops, they’re dejected, don’t really want to try any instrument. In a way, scared they might like something they try, as to them it’s only a matter of time before they can’t work with it anymore

I like your theory that they're not going to define Buck & Tommy's relationship until S8. I've seen a lot of people already planning marriage and kids (which is fine and I can see that for them), but I hope they take their relationship slow. I'm personally not a fan of immediately jumping to a nuclear family. I just want to see Buck & Tommy in a happy, established relationship for a while. I'm just so much more intrigued by the developing relationship aspect. I wanna see them take it slow, now we don't know how long they've been dating and what the time skip will look like, but I wouldn't mind if they're still without labels once s8. I kind of want Buck calling someone his boyfriend to have a bit of a narrative weight but more importantly than that I wanna see him be proactive and mindful with the big steps of this relationship because he really really likes Tommy. Instead of going with the flow as he's done with his every relationship to date. Even besides this being his first relationship with a man, I think Buck matured so much that I want him to approach this relationship differently.

Going against my first point about not being interested in marriage/kids spec (lol) but my personal hc is that in the long-term I think Buck would like to have a kid. While Giorno’s hair turned blond due to Dio’s genes affecting him around the time of VA, Mary’s actually got darker due to Jonathan’s influence around when she turned 15 (although, considering her hair was brown before, the change was very subtle).

Mary also has sharper canines/fangs due to Dio’s vampirism.

While Giorno has the heart/spirit of Jonathan and the mind of Dio (righteous + cunning), Mary has the heart/spirit of Dio and the mind of Jonathan (yearning for more + empathetic).

Giorno is more proactive while Mary is more reactive. Where Giorno makes many plans and has a fierce ambition, Mary often has a loose focus on the future. She is more go with the flow in a sense, recognizing that over planning makes one too blind/flustered should it not come to fruition.

She makes a big deal about manners. She was very strict on Giorno about him retaining some ‘proper’ manners, hence why Giorno will not swear.

Unlike her half-brothers, Mary does have an idea of who Dio was (thanks to her mother) but despises him. Having grown up hearing her broken mother speak on how much she loved Dio but how he cruelly betrayed and dragged her along, Mary has no empathy for him and believes he is the cause of ruining her life.

Despite her hatred of her father, Mary inherited many of his vampiric traits, while also making them the opposite of Giorno’s abilities. She is charismatic and charming, especially thanks to her stand, “Venus”.

Venus allows Mary to “steal” either the body or mind of a person caught in the reflective mirror she has.

While Giorno can ‘give’ life, Mary can slowly ‘drain’ life to boost her own body/mind from the host she is stealing from.

Giorno can ‘enhance’ the senses of others and “slow down” time to make them feel every sensation more, but Mary can ‘dull’ the senses and make time effectively ‘disappear’/‘jump forward’ for the one she has trapped (similar to a siren).

Using her ‘crystal eyes’ and ‘glamor’ allows others to be charmed by her. It is not a full hypnosis, but it does make people more likely to be open to her suggestions. People under her influence claim they have no recollection of the time during the charm, but they can recall Mary as if she were a dream.

Despite having those tendencies of her father, her stand being “Venus” also gives her the ‘protection’ of the Joestar family, due to their guardian being the ‘Goddess of Love’. It is also the same goddess from the statue that impaled and nearly killed her father.

If she and Dio were to ever hypothetically meet, she’d want to kill him. He is one of the few people whom she truly despises and would never be able to personally forgive. Dio would find her to be a horrid reflection of himself and also Jonathan, in the worst way possible. While he would find her powers interesting, her lack of ambition for a higher goal would make him view her as a simple minded woman.

If she were to have found out about her other half-brother’s identities earlier, she would have attempted to reach out to them and possibly move them to Italy under her and Giorno’s protection. Since she is the eldest, she views it as her responsibility to keep them all together in order to move away from their father’s influence and misfortune.

The Requirements of your Requirements

Something that I have learned in the past few years is that while it is important to have clarity about what traits we seek in our future spouses, that alone is not enough. We also have to mirror and reflect what such traits would seek in us. We have to meet the requirements of our requirements.

When I think about this, it gives me a definitive template for self improvement along the dimension of relationships. Personally, I seek someone who:

Loves me for who I am

that means firstly, I will need to have the courage to show who I am, including all those parts of me that are not shiny and impressive, I will have to practice being vulnerable, be willing to let go and lean on her knowing she has the strength to hold me up

and that in return, I shall love her for who she is, knowing that she wont be perfect, she wont tick every minute box that we all sub-consciously visualize in our love, and that is not only ok, it is precious, because in return she will bring gifts that I did not even imagine

Is monogamous and committed to long term

so I have to equally invest in single-minded commitment. I have to leave behind the thoughts of "oh what if" and "what about that". I have to give my 100% to this one person, and every day either find new ways to love her more, or reinforce the expressions of affection that work well for her

additionally, I have to be prepared for the long term, which specifically means growing my resilence to the fact that love will ebb and flow, and some days it will be hard to feel it while other days it will be so easy. I will have to fight for our shared future, overcome difficulties, wake up and choose her every day. I have to actively andeavour to grow together than grow apart.

Wants family and children

which means I have to be prepared to prioritize my family first. I have to know that sacrifices will have to be made because this is not going to be my life alone, but a shared future of all of us, and believe that is for the better.

plus, I have to be receptive to learning how to be a better father every day, give the best part of my time and energy to their upbringing and well being, and delight in their growth. I have to invest in ensuring they grow up to be both strong as well as sensitive humans who can give and receive love equally well.

Is emotionally and mentally stable

in turn, I have to constantly and proactively invest in my own emotional health. I have to identify and admit my own weaknesses and pains that I carry in me, and do my best to be able to handle them while allowing her to be part (but not responsible) for that journey

Is submissive in nature and wants to be led

that means I have to learn every day how to be a better leader, not just a dominant. i have to learn how to put her needs first so I can make decisions that are in her, or at least our combined best interest. I have to give her both the safety and the reassurance of knowing that she can rest easy by letting me lead in the relationship

Is traditional and wants to stay at home

that means I have to grow both the financial muscle as well as physical stamina to pull the family on my own at least in terms of external duties. I have to grow transferrable and employable skills and discipline with my lifestyle. And, I have to keep a level head in handling the chaos and pressures of daily businesse that will pile up on the family and always stay on top of my responsibilities.

I do not know if I will ever meet the woman I wish to find and share my life with. But if I ever do, I want to be ready. Such opportunities will only come rarely in life, and I cannot let them go to waste because I lazed around saying I will start when the situation arrives.

I have come a long way in many of these, but self improvement is a life long journey, and every new milstone and bend in the road reveals new challenges and opportunities that may not have been discovered before. It can be overwhelming at times, but like I felt way back in grad school, discovering diverse and difficult challenges also means that you have come far enough to appreciate the importance of preparing yourself to face those difficulties.

Let us keep growing brothers, not only for ourselves, but for the future we envision and want to be a part of.

Bard is one of two Destroyer Classes. Rather than willingly or proactively, by mere existence they draw in destruction of or through their Aspect. For better or for worse. This leads to some neglection of pressing matters, as what needs to be taken care of seems to take care of itself one way or another.

Time is the Aspect of Causality, Entropy, Expansion, Heat, Death, and the good ol Flow of Time. It encompasses things that are happening and are always happening. It just keeps happening.

This reminds me of a situation I had in a slinta (sapphic, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans, agender) darkroom recently. Overall I and the person I played with had a good time but when we were talking afterwards she told me that there were several people who kept interrupting her during our scene and one girl who wanted her to hurt and spank her and was not taking her saying no several times for an answer. She ended up spanking her once and then telling her that now wasn't the time for more to get her to leave and told me later that she didn't actually want to do that but didn't want any conflict. This wasn't the first time I'd heard something like this and apparently there are some people around who don't seem to realize that consent also applies the same for BDSM Tops and that if you ask someone to hurt you and they say no and you keep pressuring them that that is just as much of a consent issue as any other sex act. Just because you're a subby bottom doesn't mean you can't violate someone's consent.

On a different note my life got a lot better once I stopped being afraid of rejection and just started asking for what I want. I know this is making the point that it's a fear of being predetory that's stopping people from being proactive. And I can see that. I've had the fear of accidentally crossing someone's boundaries before. But that can only really happen when you either don't take no for an answer (which I always will) or you try to figure out what people want without directly talking about it. I know some people think going with the flow or something is hot and direct communication isn't but I've mostly given up on that. Like I've been in situations where things weren't fully communicated ahead of time and everyone still knew it was fine and things were great. But mostly that's not how things go in my life. If you're the kinda person who likes getting slapped in the face you kinda just have to tell people that because otherwise it's not going to happen (or if it did just happen it would be a problem). And the thing that was mostly standing in my way wasn't the fear of being predetory it was fear of rejection. If you are asking for things from people directly you can be rejected. That can never happen if you're just standing there waiting for others to make all the moves. What helped me feel fine with rejection was realizing that two people can be attractive and like each other and still not be sexually compatible and there really truly was no reason for me to feel bad because of someone not wanting to have sex with me. There's so many possible reasons for that.

And now that I just ask for what I want I end up in situations like this one recently where I was at a party with a dark room. I was talking to a stranger and she mentioned wanting to find someone to Top and I just said "well if you want to Top me just let me know". And that's how I got someone to Top me within the first five minutes of meeting them.

Honorable mention to my partner who I have learned a lot about direct communication from. For several years my current partner was a good friend and ex of mine. First time we hooked up again really just happened. But the second time happened when I came over to watch a movie and They point blank asked me "just to make sure we're on the same page. We want to have sex with each other, right?"

Another fun one was about fisting. I told Them I wanted to get fisted by Them last Christmas. They said They wanted to think about it. I think I told Them about a fantasy I had with it one more time. Several months into this year at some point They out of absolutely nowhere while sitting in the kitchen say "sometimes when I don't think about anything else... I think about fisting"

Anyway the best way to get what you want is to ask for it. Asking isn't predetory. Rejection is fine. Consent works the same for Tops and bottoms. The power dynamic can only start after you've talked about it as equals.

In a piece for The New Inquiry from back in 2017, George Dust states that when queer people complain about there being a top shortage, what they really mean is “nobody is fucking me the way I want, and I have no agency in that.” Alongside co-authors Billy-Ray Belcourt and Kay Gabriel, Dust suggests that many queer people align themselves with a passive or “bottom” position because they believe that role will absolve them of the guilt of really wanting things. They present themselves as what they believe to be the sexual party with zero power; the receiver, the accepter of action rather than its cause.

This position is drawn in contrast to the bottom-identified person’s idea of a top: the one who approaches, the person with hungers and desires, the person who decides which sexual activities will happen and how intense they will get. The top, from this perspective, is the stronger, more capable, more dangerous person. They’re the only one who can ever be guilty of intruding or harming somebody else. This power is scary, but it’s also compelling.

Dust calls this fantastical version of a top a “brute” — and they are the most cartoonish stereotype of what it means in society to be a man. Because it’s a cartoonish stereotype, no human actually lives up to it — and we’d probably revile a person even if they could.

Though queer people know we are harmed by the gender binary and heteronormativity and all the social scripts those things force upon us, its biases are still embossed on our brains. Without meaning to, we reproduce tired gender stereotypes in our relationships. And so we see expressing a sexual want as masculine, and being masculine as being more capable of violence and coercive control, and thus bad. We see failing to communicate one’s desires openly as desirably feminine, as well as a sign of blamelessness and purity — because on some level we still feel it is wrong to have desires.

But this entire worldview is a complete lie. Desire is not evil. Expressing attraction is not a violation. Failing to express oneself can be just as dangerous as not listening to someone else’s limits. Women can be abusive. Bottoms can sexually assault. No matter our gender, presentation, or sexual role, we are each capable of harm. And the only way to make a safe, mutually pleasurable sexual encounter happen is by going after it, actively, and communicating from a position of inner strength.

So how do you do that, if society’s been telling you all your life that you’re meant to date by acting like a deer passively snapping twigs in the woods, waiting for some hunter to hear you, and pursue you? (That really is dating advice that Evangelical Christian counselors give to women, if you can believe it).

By not fixating so much on what you’re doing or not doing to draw other people toward you, and instead thinking in terms of what you want and what you observe beyond yourself.

Joy is Power.

An 1,100 word essay about the three words on some merch in a workplace store.

This year, I’ve helped develop a few new Pride Month collectibles for my workplace’s internal merch store. They feature the axiom, “Joy is Power” either in a single multicolour row with an exclamation point, or as eleven copies of the same three words in a multicoloured stack. (Sorry, these are for a company in-house store, but I'll rework the design and post them here for block-printers, Cricut owners, etc. before July 1, 2025.)

Why? (Also… what’s an axiom?)

Design is about trying to solve something so thoroughly that what you create seems like the obvious solution. When you include an exclamation point, "Joy is Power!" has one character for every colour in either popular version of the Progress Pride Flag. When stacked as eleven copies of the phrase (without exclamation points) and set in the colours of the progress flag, an implied flag emerges. All the while, the arrangement uses words to create an abstract picture of solidarity within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Oh, and the Oxford Dictionary of English says an axiom is a statement or proposition which is regarded as being established, accepted, or self-evidently true, and that’s a nice segue into our real topic, after we celebrate that I got to use axiom and segue in a sentence together.

So, if joy is power, then what do we mean by joy?

The 2SLGBTQIA+ community and our intersectional neighbours have a lot of common words that we’ve filled with special meaning. Words like dialogue, visibility, awakening, identify, spaces, transition, community, intersectional, and joy. It’s true you can use happiness and joy interchangeably most of the time, but there are times and places where joy is almost a proper noun. Think of how the phrases ‘black happiness’ and ‘queer happiness’ hit differently when they’re written as black joy, or queer joy.

Joy, as we use the word, is more than just happiness. Where happiness comes and goes with circumstances, joy flows out of truth. You can be happy because of beautiful weather, good food, pleasant company, and uplifting news, but you’re joyful because you’re resilient, certain, connected, aware, resolute, caring, curious, and all the other good things you’ve been collecting while you become yourself. If happiness comes from what you can feel right now, then joy comes from what you know.

So, how is joy “power”?

Joy is a kind of positive, proactive act of defiance. Joy comes from what we know about ourselves, our community, the world, how things really work, how big and nuanced love really is. Those insights didn’t just land in your head; you had to find and accept and cultivate your little treasure pile of truth that fuels your joy. Just by knowing what you know, you’re saying no to every system that says, “Don’t know that!”

Joy propels us. The more you know something to be true, the more you’ll start to live like it’s true. (Ask anyone who flosses their teeth properly.) When I really, really started to get that I was truly, obviously, and absolutely the A in 2SLGBTQIA+, I started to feel a question building in me: “Okay, what now? What are you going to do about it?” For me, the answer was I had to buy and read nearly all the books on the topic (easy for my orientation—aromantic asexual). When I did that, I suddenly learned that I wasn’t alone, which added to a slowly building joy-foundation. Then, equipped with joy and terminology, I felt I had to tell someone, and then to tell a few more people, and then to start blogging about it, and then, and then, and then. Each step brought new insights and new truths—I’m out, I have allies, I have advocates, I have people to help—which fuelled a positive feedback loop.

Joy anchors us. You can be absolutely unhappy and be joyful at the same time. This won’t make any sense until you experience it, or until you look back and realize you have experienced it. From the outside it looks like resiliency, because it is. That resiliency will often feel like autopilot, where you might not even know how you got through that week of bad news, or that draining confrontation, or whatever else you got through. But if you’re lucky enough, every now and then you’ll feel a quiet little “no,��� standing in front of all the thoughts that are trying to break you. “No, this isn’t a phase I’ll outgrow. No, I’m not alone. No, the world isn’t built to move backwards. No, I’m not broken.”

So, where can you find joy? (A deliberately incomplete list.)

You can find joy in each other. Community is so important, because it’s where we share truth: “Yes, that’s normal. Yes, everyone feels that. Yes, that’s so relatable. Yes, that’s a thing, and here’s a great video about it. I’m so glad you shared that. I’m so glad you’re here. I’m so moved by your story. I’m so here for you.” Sometimes all you’ll have for community are a few books and blog posts, or a handful of favourite TV episodes. That’ll do. It’s still reassurance that others can relate. We’re fortunate enough to still have social media platforms or even even real-world places and festivals where you can be who you are. Participate in them. Find a way to safely share what you’ve experienced and learned.

You can find joy in difficult questions. Is this real? Can I reconcile this with my other fundamental values? Can anyone really relate to what I feel? Can I be this? Can my friends accept me? Can my family accept me? Am I sure? Those were all absolutely terrifying questions when I first asked them. But when I got my answers, nearly each one of them became a fundamental part of my joy. Yes, this is real. Yes, it harmonizes perfectly with my beliefs and values. Yes, there are so many people who relate to what I feel that we even have our own memes. Yes, I can absolutely be me. Yes, my friends can accept me. Yes, I’m sure.

Queer joy, lesbian parenting joy, trans joy, bisexual joie de vivre… whatever you call it, let others know where you’ve found it. There are no wrong answers, only hidden ones.
