When I was regathering my long-neglected research for my Helga Sinclair ribbon corset, I rediscovered this gorgeous extant example in the V&A from 1895. Unlike most extant examples I've come across, this one doesn't feature overlapping ribbons. This suggests that it was made for a particularly slim woman who needed very little support and for particular summertime breathability (supported by the garment waist measuring 19", suggesting a laced waist of 22-24".)

To me, long-since trapped in The Locked Tomb, the ribcage-like appearance was inescapable. Wouldn't you know it, I have a Crown Prince Kiriona Gaia costume that I started a year ago that was needing a little something something to pull the design together and to help motivate me.

The pattern was adapted from my Helga ribbon corset, allowing for 24mm wide ribbon to meet at the sides and spread evenly in a ribcage like fashion at the front panel.

This time I used a beautiful shell-coloured silk ribbon. The ribbon is so beautifully soft, that it was a nightmare to work with. I do not recommend it for something that needs quite so much working as it marked with so much as a hard look! I am fairly certain that the V&A example the ribbon is self-mounted, so I again mounted my main ribbon, this time on a white cottong taffeta ribbon. If i slipped with my mounting or the ribbon twisted or buckled, i thought the white would be a suitably stark and skeletal contrast to the main silk ribbon.

As I am perhaps a little more fleshy than the lady who owned the original 1895 example, I cheated and also added a base layer of nude tulle to help smooth out the laced-up silhouette.

The overall construction process was the same as Helga: quilted the ribbon panels across the boned panels before covering and sandwiching them, and inserting the bones from the side to allow for for hem stitching.

To finish, another ivory powder-coated busk and stitched over eyelets for security.

What Gen's tent in RotT probably looked like according to me lol. This drawing is probably of Henry VIII's tent at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, a fun party/meeting he had with France's king in 1520. Source: Tudor Textiles by Eleri Lynn, fabulous book, highly recommend. She has an equally amazing book out called Tudor Fashion.

So I attended the British History Festival Online this past weekend and heard a lovely talk by Eleri Lynn on Tudor Fashion she has written two books that focus on fashion in the 16th Century. I heard a mention of a pamphlet written in the 1580s that praised Robert Dudley and contributed to the development of embalms at the Tudor Court. Does anyone else know anything about this source?

At the time of her death, Elizabeth I's wardrobe inventory listed some 1900 items, but now only one or two objects directly associated with her have been identified. [...] The intrinsic value of fabric was such that it was usually handed down, repurposed and refashioned, until its original provenance was severed and the garments were rendered almost unrecognisable from their original form. Elizabeth's many gowns are now probably threadbare cushion or seat covers in stately homes across the land, though we can say one, at least was probably used as an alter cloth.

Eleri Lynn was researching for her book, Tudor Fashion, when she came across the image of an altar cloth in Herefordshire, England, four years ago.

Intrigued, she paid a visit, and ended up discovering what is believed to be the sole-surviving dress of 16th-century monarch Queen Elizabeth I — or at least, some of it.

Starting 8th October, the course “A History of Royal Fashion”, by the University of Glasgow and the Historic Royal Palaces, will be available on Future Learn. For free. Yep. FREE.

The course has a duration of 5 weeks, with 4 hours of study for week, you’ll be able to get in touch with other learners (I’ll be there! Can’t wait to interact with you all!), and learn at your own pace (you’ll have access to the course for 7 weeks, so don’t be stressed). The course is free, but there’s an available upgrade ($58USD) that will grant unlimited access to the course (have even more time to complete it,so no rush) and the Certificate of Achievement (so you can add it to your Curriculum if you want). The course for free and with upgrade is the same with the same articles, quizzes, etc., but I think it is a real upgrade to have a certificate. You can upgrade waaaaaaaaay in the future, if you want, so there is no rush here either.

Saat menghadiri upacara selamat datang bersama Ratu Elizabeth II dan Keluarga Kerajaan Inggris di Buckingham Palace, netizen dibuat terkesima oleh tampilan Melania Trump.

Istri ketiga dari Donald Trump ini tampil simple namun tetap elegan dengan balutan busana putih lansiran Dolce & Gabbana. Warna midnight blue di bagian kerah dan ikat pinggang menjadi paduan kombinasi warna yang terlihat berkelas. Ia menyempurnakan gayanya dengan topi wide brim atau topi dengan pinggiran lebar karya desainer AS, Herve Pierre.

Bahkan sebagian besar pakaian yang dikenakan oleh Kate Middleton merupakan hasil desain dari label dan desainer favorit Putri Diana, yaitu Catherine Walker. Diketahui, berbagai busana rancangan Catherine Walker yang dikenakan Kate Middleton memiliki desain khas yang menjadi favorit Putri Diana.

Dalam beberapa kesempatan, Kate Middleton pernah mensontek gaya Putri Diana. Misalnya saja saat baru keluar dari rumah sakit setelah melahirkan Pangeran George.

Saat itu ia mengenakan gaun dengan motif yang sama seperti yang digunakan Putri Diana ketika melahirkan Pangeran William pada 21 Juni 1982. Ketika itu Putri Diana mengenakan gaun hijau tosca bermotif polkadot. Sedangkan Kate mengenakan gaun berwarna biru bermotif polkadot.

Tak hanya sampai di situ, saat Kate melahirkan putra ketiganya, Pangeran Louis, ia juga mengenakan gaun bernuansa merah putih seperti yang digunakan Putri Diana saat ia melahirkan Pangeran Harry pada 1984. Bedanya, lengan gaun Kate tak sepenuhnya menutupi tangan seperti yang dikenakan putri Diana.

Meghan Markle

Tidak kalah dengan Kate, Meghan Markle juga kerap mengenakan busana yang terinspirasi dari mendiang Putri Diana. Beberapa waktu lalu saat ia kembali ke Inggris untuk menghadiri acara-acara terakhir sebagai anggota keluarga kerajaan Inggris, gaya Meghan disebut-sebut mirip dengan Putri Diana.

A sweeping gown Princess Diana wore when she danced with John Travolta at the White House has been bought for more than $280,000 by the charity that looks after her former palace.The bodiced, off-the-shoudler, midnight blue dress by couturier Victor Edelstein, was put up for sale by London’s Kerry Taylor Auctions on Monday, with an estimated price tag of 250,000-300,000 pounds ($320,750 - $384,900). It failed to reach those figures during live bidding, but the charity moved in afterwards.“It was sold post-auction ... for a hammer price of 220,000 pounds. A lot of what we know about Tudor Fashion comes from portraits and sketches of the era, so I also recommend browsing portraits and looking at details in them. Also going through online museum collections- there aren’t many extant items, but there is a couple things like chemises, hats, etc.

Depending on your location, you might be able to join a group that does historical recreation- I know SCA goes up to the Tudor era, and there are other ones as well.
